Foreword

Between the last edition of our catalog and this, Amici has been successful in promoting energy efficient heating systems. With the help of partner organizations like the Hotel Engineers Association of the Philippines (HEAP) who share our vision to promote energy management best practices, we were able to execute our seminar "Water Heating Systems: Towards Energy Conservation" twice in Manila and one in Cebu. To everybody who participated in the information dissemination of energy efficient water heating, we should be proud of ourselves. Cheers.

This year, we are even more intent in promoting new technologies such as Templifier system (see pages 6-7) to bigger establishments with centralized cooling.

At the same time, we seek to maintain our participation in promoting energy efficient water heating through seminars and elevate further the level of service that we have provided our clients.

Water Heating

HEAT PUMPS: Fireflux Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) is apromising technology that uses the same mechanical principles as refrigerators and air conditioners to generate hot water. unlike conventional electricity and fossil-fuel-fired water heaters, HPWH's take heat from the surrounding air and transfer it to the water in the tank. Browse through pages 9-13 for more information on HPWHs.

GAS HEATER: The A. O. Smith Cyclone Xi is the industry’s most technologically advanced commercial water heater. SWIMMING POOL POOL PUMP: A breakthrough in energy-efficiency and

service life, the IntelliPro® Variable Speed Pump allows programming for four different speeds for different pool, spa or water features applications. Pump speeds are easily adjusted with the push of an up or down arrow button. Standard pool pumps can consume as much energy as all other home appliances combined. POOL HEATER: Features include an LED temperature readout with dual thermostat controls, temperature safety lockout, and 6-position control panel. PMG burner technology requires no outdoor draft hood. Proven Dura-Glas® rust-proof construction with plastic manifold and PVC union connections. Heavy-duty unit with cupro-nickel exchanger stands up to the harshest of applications, like low pH, high flow or heavy use. UNDERWATER LIGHTS: LED lights use less amount of energy compared to regular lights among lighting options. Jet-flo and Sta-Rite pool lights need only 7-15 watts to create the same light output as traditional incandescent and halogen pool lights at 75-150 watts- more than 85%. LED lights are more durable and can last longer. More designs of underwater lights on page 28.

CONSTANT PRESSURE SYSTEM: Amici provides a wide range of customized package booster systems from constant pressure switch operations to variable frequency drives for efficient water management.

TEMPLIFIER

Templifier units can produce up to 160 °F water for use inservice hot water heating or reheat applications. Units have been installed worldwide in hotels, hospitals, offices and factories. Both HVAC and process applications can reduce energy costs by using a Templifier water heater.

McQuay scroll and screw chillers provide heat at a lower cost than burning fossil fuels and generate a very good return on investment. It offers COPs (coefficients of performance) of four to five, and often pay for themselves in one year or less. This innovative heat recovery technology can reduce CO2 emissions by hundreds of tons annually and significantly reduce a facility’s carbon footprint. In addition, Templifier water heaters can help building owners earn LEED® points by improving the efficiency of their heating systems.”

Because templifier units heat water more economically than either fossil fuel or electric-resistance heaters, they can reduce the burden on boilers and/or cooling towers, thereby eliminating or delaying a capital equipment expense when increased heat production is needed.

Shangri-la Edsa knew this exactly. Instead of conventional solar heaters with electric element backups, they committed to a solar heating system where the backup is the next best thing: Heat Pump Water Heaters.

Hence, the first Solar-Heat Pump Water Heating System in the Philippines is installed.

The performance of the Solar-heat pump water heating system in Shangri-la Edsa is excellent. It is not free as pure solar energy. It never is. But using heat pump as backup, it's as close to free as it gets. Operating cost is reduced by more than 80%. Now all steam boilers of Shangri-la Edsa have been shut down, except for a small capacity to serve steam and high temperature requirements for kitchen and laundry.

Limitations of the Solar-Heat Pump water heating systems are: large surface area requirement for panels, large installation cost and large capital investment on equipment.

Although the solar-heat pump water heating system is a very effective and efficient water heating system, heat pump water heating system alone has grown to be even more popular given the cheap operating costs, 24 hour availability, at a relatively smaller investment and foot print.

Heat Pump Water Heaters, the heart of the Solar-Heat Pump System operate so efficiently that it is common and reasonable for retrofitting working electric and gas heaters and boilers. Establishments who have previously used gas-fired heaters that have now shifted to heat pump water heaters are the following: Victoria Court hotels (Malate, Cuneta, Gil Puyat, Las Pinas, Balintawak, North Edsa, Malabon, Escarpment, Hill Crest, Canley and San Fernando Pampanga), Astoria Plaza and Sogo hotels (Novaliches, Cubao, Kalentong, Sta. Apart from potable water heating, heat pump water heaters have also become a suitable choice for heating swimming pools. Because heating such large volume of hot water requires a lot of heat energy, payback period of replacing gas/electric swimming pool or whirlpool/spa heaters usually ranges from 2 to 6 months only.

Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) is the proven technology that uses the same mechanical principles as refrigerators and air conditioners to generate hot water. Unlike conventional electricity and fossil-fuel-fired water heaters, HPWHs take heat from the surrounding air and transfer it to the water in the tank.

The heat pump works by taking heat from the surrounding air and using it to heat the low pressure liquid refrigerant in the heat pump's evaporator, vaporizing the liquid. The refrigerant then passes through the compressor, which raises the refrigerant pressure and thus the temperature as well. The heated refrigerant gas passes through the heat pump condenser, where it gives off its heat to the water and condenses back into the liquid state. The liquid refrigerant now passes through an expansion valve where the pressure is reduced and the cycle starts over.

Heat pumps mainly consist of a compressor, fan, evaporator and the heat exchanger. The compressor requires electricity to compress the refrigerant and vaporize it, and the fan requires a small amount of electricity to continually blow air across the evaporator coils when the unit is operating. The only electricity cost is the operation of the compressor and the fan in order to collect the free heat and pump it to the hot water.

Residential Heat PumpsIn 2006, Amici launched its line of Commercial Solar Heat Pump Water Heating System. This technology uses the heat in the air created by solar energy and transfers it to the water used in showering and bathing. Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) is proven technology that uses the same mechanical principles as refrigerators and air conditioners to generate hot water from the residual energy in the atmosphere. Using Solar Flat Collector Panels, the energy that can be saved is limited by the duration by which sunlight directly heats the solar panels. Solar Heat Pumps however use the refrigeration technology to force free heat from the infinitely vast atmosphere into your showers day and night. This allows Solar Heat Pumps to produce almost 20 times more hot water from solar heat compared to a conventional single panel solar heater.

For example:A household with 6 members can consume as much as 180 gallons per day. This translates to about Php 8,200.00 per month or about Php 98,400.00 a year to your electric bill. On the other hand, with the use of Solar Heat Pumps, this translates to only about Php 24,670.00 a year.

When using large standard galvanized tanks, a constant air cushion is required for proper operation of the water System. The illustrations show the percent of tank volume as related to the pressure gauge reading. To determine The amount of water you will receive as drawoff from the tank,you should subtract the smaller number from thelarger number to get the percentage. Then multiply by the size of the tank to get the gallons drawoff.

Example: 50Lbs = 77.3 Minus 30 lbs = 67.2 = 10.1% Multiply x 120 gallon size (size of tank) = 12.12 gallons drawoff

Directions: For new or newly refilled pools, add 10 oz. of chlorine per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Then run the filtration system for 24 hours. Adjust ph to 7.4 - 7.6 and test for chlorine residual. Do not allow bathers to swim when chlorine residual is above 2.00 PPM. Then simply follow the chlorine dosage shown below.

Superchlorination: Should pool water appear cloudy or dirty, add 20 oz. of chlorine concentrate per 10,000 gallons, allowing the pool filter to run so as to turn the pool water over in the pool. This process should be repeated until the pool water is clear and sparkling. Normal chlorination is not necessary during this process. Do not allow bathers when chlorine residual is over 2.00 PPM.
