Open your eyes. Take it allin. History is being made. When the Amgen Tour of California caravan rolls into Auburn on Tuesday, May 17, with its array of color, speedand logistical mastery, it willstamp its place in the annals of the communitys history.

A second gold rush? Probably not.

But theres definitely a silverlining to having more than20,000 people in town and a worldwide television audiencein the millions.

The Tour of California isnt amorning ride with your bud-dies. Eight days, 764 miles andplenty of pain stand betweenthe worlds best athletes and thecoveted Tour championship quickly becoming one of themost prestigious on the planet.

This section is intended toprovide as much information aspossible on the Tour, thecyclists to watch, and where to watch them from.

    If theres something we left

out, theres a great chance youllfind what you need in one of the many stories weve writtenin the Auburn Journal (orsearch Amgen on www. AuburnJournal.com).

For easy reference, turn toartists map at the center of thesection, which details the raceroute, spectator locations andthe myriad festivities at Central

Square on race day. That artist happens to be

    Advertising Manager Beth

OBrien, who worked with her wonderful staff and local mer-chants to make this publicationpossible.

But youll find other stories of interest, including spectatorrules and etiquette, the 10 rid-ers to watch, what it takes tohave the body of a Tour rider, and a comprehensive calendarof the big events before and

during race day.Speaking of making this pub-

lication possible, the Tour in Auburn wouldnt be possible

without the dedication andcommitment from Bike Auburn, the organic volunteerorganization that turned last years successful Amgen debutinto a full-blown celebration.

Led by Auburn Police Capt.John Ruffcorn, the 30-plusmember group was the littleengine that could and did.

Each Thursday morning since December, the group hasmet to share information onsponsorship, public relations, volunteers, logistics, safety, hospitality and more. Then, many of the committee mem-bers hit the streets to get thereal work done.

What youll see on race day will be the result of thousandsof hours of work. And when thecyclists leave Auburn for Fol-som and beyond on Tuesday morning, after their 15 minutesof riding fame here, the work of volunteers will continuethroughout the day, making sure youve had a great time.

So spend a few minutes with

this guide and become familiar with all things Tour, then planto be in Auburn for most of theday on Tuesday, May 17. Feelsome of the pure intensitythat comes with watching amazing athletes going 40 mphon two thin tires, inches fromvictory and injury at the sametime.

    Auburn welcomes you.

Auburn will play amajor role in one of thelargest sporting events inthe world Tuesday, May 17 when it hosts the thirdstage of the Amgen Tourof California.

Hundreds of cyclists will compete, thousands will watch the race liveand millions of viewers will watch the action ontelevision.

Auburn was first direct-ly involved with the Amgen Tour of Californialast year, when Stage 1passed through townbefore exiting via theForesthill Bridge.

Tour organizers were soimpressed with theorganization and enthu-siasm of Auburns effort, they eventually rewardedthe city with the Stage 3start in 2011.

Racing basicsEach of the 19 teams

competing in the AmgenTour of California willsend out eight riders atthe start of each stage.

The teammates will work together, setting each other up for whatthey hope will be stagevictories and competing for the overall title.

    Each team features rid-

ers that specialize inclimbing, sprinting ortime trials, while the over-all winner will have toexcel in each of thoseareas.

The Amgen Tour of Cal-ifornias appeal lies in itsvariety of challenges.

There are demanding climbs, rolling hills andtwisty roads that will chal-lenge the riders technical

    skills.There are several indi-

vidual awards riders willgo after throughout therace, including the King of the Mountain jersey, theMost Courageous Rider jersey and the coveted

    yellow leaders jersey.Tour of California

It didnt take long forthe Amgen Tour of Cali-fornia to make a splashon the cycling scene.

In just five short years, the stage race has sky-rocketed in popularity and prestige.

Among world-classstage races, it rates along-

side the Giro dItalia interms of prominence, second only to the Tourde France.

The names associated with the Tour of Californiaspeak volumes.

    Floyd Landis, who won

the Tour de France but was later stripped of histitle due to a doping viola-tion, won the inauguralrace in 2006.

Santa Rosa residentLevi Leipheimer wonthree straight Tour titlesfrom 2007 to 2009. Last year, Australian starMichael Rogers raced tovictory.

    Lance Armstrong made

his return to racing afterthree years in retirementat the 2009 Amgen Tour of California.

The streets of Sacra-mento were packed to seethe one of the worldsmost famous athletes in

action. He returned last year with his new Radio Shack team and Tour of Califor-nia fans came out indroves to cheer on theseven-time Tour deFrance champion.

The Tour of Californiamay not have Armstrong as the main attraction in2011, but there is plenty of talent in the field.

Leipheimer will be eagerto reclaim the title in hishome state, but Rogers isprimed to defend.

The best teams in theU.S. will go head to head with several of Europesbest. Among the favorites

are Team Radio Shack (U.S.), Team HTC-High-road (U.S.), TeamGarmin-Cervelo (U.S.),Team Saxo Bank Sun-guard (Denmark), TeamRabobank (Netherlands)and Team BMC Racing (U.S.).

Whether powering up atough hill or enduring over a hundred miles aday of riding, profession-al cyclists have to be ableto trust their bodies toperform under pressure.

Before professionalsbike Auburn in the Amgen Tour of California, they will be training toensure their bodies are Amgen-fit.

For pros like LeviLeipheimer and Lance Armstrong, that meanshaving a specific training regimen.

Most professionalcyclists train 20 to 30hours per week, accord-

ing to ORourke. In the beginning they log more miles at a lowerintensity. Leading up to arace most cyclists transi-tion to a shorter, morehigh intensity ride.

ORourke said many teams have a crew of nutritionists and chefs.

A change in diet rightbefore a race can result inintestinal stress.

ORourke also said how you take care of your

    body after training is crit-ical.

When you get done itsgolden hour, ORourkesaid. You consume nutri-ents and calories andbegin the repair process. You have to play the restthe same way you do yourtraining.

After a day on the roadORourke will drink arecovery smoothie made

with fruit juice, yogurtand whey protein.

Sutter IndependentPhysician Dr. KevinHansen is fellowship-trained in orthopedic sur-gery and sports medicine.

He said most noviceriders dont realize thecaloric needs of profes-sional riders.

It varies greatly on thelevel you at in training,Hansen said. For some-one who is at this level of riding on the Amgen orIronman, they are looking more around 4,000 calo-ries. It allows them whenit goes into the enduranceaspect to tap into storesfor energy without the

Excited to check out Stage 3of the Amgen Tour of Califor-nia? We thought so.

Knowing where to park, which roads are closed and when, and which spots offerthe best view on May 17 canhelp ensure a great day forcyclists and spectators alike.

Road closures Auburn Amgen Tour of Cali-

fornia organizers are asking forpatience on the day that couldput Auburn on the map.

Several roads are expected tobe closed to drivers for parts orall of race day.

One-hour closures from 10a.m. to 11 a.m. are scheduled toinclude the entire racecourse, which begins in CentralSquare, heads down Lincoln Way to Sacramento Street inOld Town, runs back up HighStreet to Elm Avenue, turnsright onto Lincoln Way andflows back down to CentralSquare.

Two laps are planned for thefull course and the third willtake cyclists down Auburn Fol-som Road and out of the city.

Capt. John Ruffcorn, of the Auburn Police Department, said citizens and businessemployees could contact him with any concerns leading up tothe event.

This is the second largestbicycle race in the world and Auburn is very fortunate tohave the opportunity to host astage start on May 17, Ruffcornsaid. Obviously not everybody is a bicycle enthusiast but weare hoping people who comethat day who may have neverbeen to Auburn or may haveforgotten about Auburn, willcome that day and keep coming back.

Where to park Auburn citizens and race

spectators are being encour-aged to park in a few specificlots on race day.

According to Ruffcorn, thelocal organizing committee isasking the public to park at theGold Country Fairgrounds.Parking will be $5 on race day.

Kahl Muscott, district admin-istrator for the Auburn Area

Recreation and Parks District, said the district has made surenot to schedule anything theday of the race so that the park-ing lots at Recreation Park andRailhead Park can also be used.Parking is free in those lots.

A number of lots throughoutthe city will be closed to thegeneral public on race day sothey can be used as parking forvolunteers, AEG officials and

the media, Ruffcorn said.Ruffcorn said volunteers

would be standing in front of the lots that are closed to thepublic to redirect drivers, but if a member of the public shouldhappen to park in a closed lot, regular fines will apply.

Were not passing any spe-cial ordinances for that day, hesaid. Regular traffic fees will beapplicable for people parking

CROWD ETIQUETTEHere are a few tips to consid-er if checking out Stage 3 ofthe Amgen tour of californiaDO: Get excited and cheer asriders go buy.

Cowbells and airhorns arecool too. Even trumpets or abass drum, if youre so musi-cally inclined. In fact, get aband together if the spiritmoves you.Bring plenty of water orother beverages, SPF 15 orgreater sunscreen and acomfy foldable chair. A picnicmight even be a good idea.Remember, it will get crowd-ed. So park in designatedareas and prepare to walk toviewing areas. Find a picturesque spot ear-ly at a place youd like torelax and spend a couple ofhours at. Bring your bike and ridearound before and after toget into the spirit of cycling. Wear a costume. Anythinggoes on race day withinreason.

DONT: Forget to wear a helmet ifyou ride to Auburn AmgenTour of California event

Try to cruise around in yourvehicle trying to find theclosest spot. You might missthe action if it takes too longto find one. So give yourselfplenty of time and youllhave the most fun. Muscle your way throughthe crowd at the lastmoment to get to the frontof the viewing area. Paint the road with fanboyor fangirl slogans. Its maybeOK in some deserted stretch-es of the Alps during theTour de France but its graffi-ti in Auburn. Use chalk, ifyou must express yourselfvisually. Or make a sign withan old sheet. Believe it ornot, youre no Banksy. Blow your airhorn or trum-pet in other spectators ears.Believe it or not, youre noWynton Marsalis.

Roper said the display wouldinclude bicycle parts, crank sets, jerseys, wheel sets, shoesand more.

It should be an exciting event, and Auburn should getamazing exposure around the world, Roper said. So you aregoing to see the effects of thatin the months to come.

Linda Robinson, president of the Old Town Business Associa-tion, said the association isplanning to hang old bikesaround Old Town to celebratethe event.

    Carnahans bondwith bikes goes back

to childhoodBY GLORIA YOUNGJOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A bike has been a partof Glenn Carnahans lifesince childhood and thebasis of a lot of fondmemories.

The circle of friendsIve met through cycling has been some of theclosest friends I have, hesaid.

Carnahan, 48, has livedin Auburn for 11 years.

Hes a consulting chief financial officer in thealternative energy fieldand is general manager of the Foresthill Public Util-ities District.

    Hes not only a cyclist,hes also a devoted run-ner.

Currently hes focusedon the Auburn Century ride, set for June 4, whichhe hosts. At the sametime, hes training for theJune 25-26 Western States100-Mile Endurance Run.

I ride mainly for fun, particularly for cross-training, he said. It real-ly is just another excuseto get outside and enjoy the fresh air.

With much of his timegoing toward training for Western States, hescycling a couple of timesa week usually for anhour or an hour and ahalf up to several hours.

It depends on if Im with friends or not doing a long run, he said. Illgo out on Saturdays anddo a five-to-six-hourride.

One of his favorite des-tinations is Dutch Flat.

Its part of the (route) Ido for the Century Ride,

he said. You do a lot of variety of terrain. Its quiet with plenty of rest stops torefuel, a lot of solitude real pretty.

From the days as a teen when a bike was his trans-portation to swim prac-

tice, Carnahan has viewedcycling as an importantpart of a healthy lifestyle.

Its always good tohave a goal out here, so Idont spend too muchtime at work or on thecouch, he said. Its

always been part of my fabric. Its an outlet tokeep fit and get some- where.

His fondest cycling memories center aroundkayaking trips to remoteareas in the north of the

    state.After kayaking, wed go

out for several hours onthese narrow canyons with single-lane roadsand ride for three or fourhours, he said. Theres alot of solitude. Most days wed never see any cars. It was fun just another way to spend time out-doors with good friends.

He divides his ridesbetween a Trek road bikeand a Kona mountainbike.

The mountain bike Igot set up for a sidecarand trailer, Carnahansaid. I have twin 3-year-old daughters and a 4- year-old son. They lovehopping into the sidecarand well cruise around tothe park or to China Barand back. As theyve got-ten bigger, it has gotten tobe a lot more work and alot more painful on thehills coming back home.Theres always a battle tosee who gets in the side-car first.

Carnahan has beeninvolved in the AuburnCentury, known as the wildest ride in the West, since it started eight yearsago.

Typically we get 350riders. This year is looking like 400 to 450 riders, hesaid.

Hes looking forward tobeing a spectator whenthe Amgen Tour of Cali-fornia departs AuburnMay 17 on the races thirdstage.

Ill be with my childrendown at Tsudas in Oldtown when (the cyclists)come down from thecourthouse, he said. I was there last year and Illbe there again.

    Lackeys love ofcycling brought him

to the foothillsBY ANNE PAPINEAUJOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Roger Lackey calls bicy-cles the perfectmachine.

You get to control it,make it go as fast as you want, he said.

The 40-year-old Ophirresident and his wife, Amanda, are admittedly avid cyclists. The sporthas even determined where they call home.

Wed spend so muchtime driving from EastSacramento driving uphere, we decided to live where we wanted to live, not where we work, hesaid.

Lackey is a manager forthe State of CaliforniaFranchise Tax Board, buthes cycled since kinder-garten age.

At Cordova High Schoolhe had a semester that was half-rugby and half-cycling.

The high school basi-cally backs up to the American River and the American River Bike Trail. That was kind of my introduction. I wouldspend my summers rid-ing from Rancho Cordovato Beals Point withfriends.

In 1991 I was intro-duced to mountain bik-ing. My brother-in-law took me on a mountainbike trip and I washooked. I love road bikesbut my preference ismountain bikes.

I love it. You meet a lotof people who have thesame common interests,

Bardwil a barristeron the bike pathsBY PAUL CAMBRAJOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Bob Bardwil spends hisdays on the bench as afederal bankruptcy judge. But not the entire day.

Every day, a few of usset out around 5:30 inmorning, a little later onthe weekends, said Bard- wil, who has been riding recreationally for almost35 years.

The rides take any- where from one to fivehours, and vary in length. They could be 30-35 mileson the road, or 22 mileson trails.

One constant in Auburn is you will dosome climbing, Bardwilsaid.

For road trips, he likesthe Dog Bar Loop, whichtakes you up throughGrass Valley and Colfax.

He said the MosquitoRidge ride throughForesthill is an exception-al ride as well.

I was a runner in law school, he said.

I used to do triathlonsin their infancy, back inthe late 70s, but badknees eventually took running off the plate. SoIve focused on cycling the past 20 years.

While Bardwil used tocompete every chance hegot, more knee troublehas resigned him to riding for my mental health,he said.

It is good stress release, getting outside every day,he said. I ride rain or

shine, year round. Of course Auburns weatheris not too severe.

On his 50th birthday, heand a group that callthemselves Team Motley Grinders, or TMG, took road bikes on a door-to-door to Tahoe, thencame back on mountainbikes, some 100-125 milesin 12-14 hours.

They had so much fun,he said, they did it four years in a row.

So while the wheels of justice can sometimesmove slow and deliberate, you can be sure that the wheels of whatever bikeJudge Bardwil is riding arespinning fast and furious.

Loving the collegiatecycling circuitBY ANDREW DILUCCIAJOURNAL MOTORING EDITOR

For Luke Ramseth, cycling started out as apastime spent with hisfriends by his parentshome in Weimar thenhe entered a race.

My friend and I decid-ed to do the Cool Moun-tain Bike Race in theeighth grade and that gotme hooked, he said.

After that first taste of competition the now 21- year-old college studenttook part in a high schoolmountain bike leagueand formed a team at Col-fax High.

He has since branchedout into road racing.

I would think I woulddo it (cycling) whether Iraced or not, Ramsethsaid. Im racing colle-giately for Fort Lewis Col-lege (in Durango, Colo.), which is one of the bestcollegiate cycling pro-grams in the country.

We have nationalscoming up here in a week and a half. Im definitely into the competition sideat the moment, but itsalso just fun to get outand reset the engine.

Ramseth has been tothe college nationals oncebefore, and cites it as oneof his most memorableaccomplishments in thesport thus far.

Ranking right up withthat experience was com-peting in the pro class of the Nevada City BicycleClassic.

My goal was always torace in the pro 1-2 class(in the Nevada City Bicy-cle Classic), and last year Igot to do that, said Ram-seth, who rides six days a week and up to 80 miles aday. To see guys likeLance (Armstrong) andFloyd Landis race it and

then I got to was pretty exciting.

And riding back homeis always a thrill.

Back home, theres somuch good riding I canteven really begin to nar-row it down that much,Ramseth said. Down in Auburn theres so many options. I feel Auburn isreally lucky becausetheres so many different ways you can go.

Now Ramseth will getto see the cycling worldsbest roll through on the Amgen Tour of Californiaand put his riding stomp-ing grounds in the worldspotlight.

I think its really coolthat it (the Tour of Califor-nia) has gotten so big,Ramseth said.

At this point I think its widely considered to bethe third biggest race inthe world behind theTour de France and theTour of Italy (Giro DI-talia), Ramseth said. Ithink its really cool Auburn got the bid not to just have it roll through, but actually have a start intown.

Its going to be anexciting day for Auburn.
