AMG Visuals has reached an agreement with Loochie Records And Publishing LLC/James Brown Family and is now moving forward with what it hopes will be the ultimate live-concert documentary film on the man whose vocal wizardry and dance sensibilities made him one of the most iconic stars in soul/pop history. AMG has established a theatrical street date of October 2015 that will be produced by Berry and its international team of producers Kevin Stallings & Ryan Hamsho. Mark S. Berry and AMG's EVP Rob "Kelo" Hendricks will executive produce for AMG. Best of all, Brown's best known tunes, from Sex Machine, Get Up Off That Thing to Living In America, will be used as part of the films live soundtrack that was Mr. Brown's last live recorded performance in Anaheim, California, just prior to his death in 2006. AMG had negotiated directly with Stallings whom directed the live portion of the concert. Potential interviewees include family members of James Brown, the JB's Fred Wesley & Maceo Parker, Danny Ray (Brown's long timer friend and MC), singer Chris Brown, Bootsy Collins and many more. Mark Berry's AMG Signs Nashville Country Rocker Anthony K Through Label Deal With

It was a time when people were open to new things. We offer them that. We show them new places to travel, explore different kinds of cuisine and even different hotels to stay in. We wanted to help discover different kinds of holidays, driving experiences, vineyards, wine etc." said Blenman.

Blenman noted the challenge of being a first mover. "We had to build brand familiarization by effectively communicating the proposition and developing a community for first-time viewers of a new category of television entertainment. People were getting more interested in leisure time activities. They also started becoming more interested in brands whether it was clothing or cars. The concept of eating in restaurants and experimenting with food was catching on. A big change was going on in urban North America in terms of how people spent their money and lived. We want AMG Lifestyle to became the default production entity for new lifestyle entertainment in North America."

We had three challenges reacted to the stakeholders in this business. One challenge was convincing distributors that Sizzlin' was worth showing. You had to persuade advertisers that this is something worth being invested in.

After all, advertisers plan budgets for different types in advance. Viewers also had to be convinced as they have viewing habits. They have eight to ten shows that they choose from. We had to break into that."

Growing exposure to lifestyle also helped AMG grow. "I remember getting emails from people saying that they had planned a Caribbean holiday after watching the Sizzlin' screener. Watchers wrote that they visited a restaurant after it was featured on our AMG screener for Sizzlin'. They were planning trips around television content. This was a testament to the fact that we got both our launch timing right and programming right," said Berry. We generated interest from the advertising and marketing communities very early on." For Blenman the key to success lay in being ahead of the curve in identifying emerging trends and developing programming for a supreme viewing experience. There was increasing awareness and desire to know more about the world around, different life style, cuisine, trends, etc.

The plan going forward is to continue to bring in more types of lifestyle entertainment and to broaden AMG's Lifestyle appeal, present more acclaimed personalities, amplify Canadian content and invest in marketing and distribution of a Lifestyle channel.

Sizzlin', an AMG/Bsquared Entertainment property is "Iron Chef" meets "Chopped" with "March Madness" tournament style competition. 16 chefs from all over the Caribbean & Latin America (West Indies & Virgin Islands) will be competing to represent themselves and their country to receive the title of, "The Hottest Sizzlin' Chef of 2015'." Joshua Walsh, freshly off production of Calgary alt-rock native Kyley Styles, is joining Toronto based AMG, the music & film management/production company founded by international record producer, Mark S. Berry.

The details and structure still are being worked out, but Walsh is confirmed as West Coast A&R Staff Producer and is joining forces with a team he has a long relationship with. They will collaborate on future projects, as the next step in his career.

AGR/Universal has announced Kevin Chase as the newest member of its legendary European country music roster. 2013-14 was a significant turnaround year for AMG, the Toronto based media and entertainment company. The operations shifted from music to include reality based television shows, dramas and their film content was strengthened as it strategized the integration of high profile documentaries and live superstar music concert performances into its extensive music media catalog.

AMG Chairman Mark S. Berry and EVP Rob "Kelo" Hendricks promises to make the remaining 2014/15 an even bigger year with a focus on urban themed film and television properties through its newly inked joint venture with New York's B-Squared Entertainment.

Another area of focus will be building interaction and doing social media activation for all B-Squared properties. More focus on digital marketing: Berry says that the company has done a different mix of marketing when one looks at online. "A lot of online programming that we do is about increasing segment viewership," he explains. Berry says that this is more of a social media initiative. "When we look at social media, we look at doing things that will activate it. Social media is about conversation. We wanted to create a platform for viewers to converse about our shows. People chatter and compare shows using social media. So we felt the need to launch urban street based shows that will give people the chance to talk about the shows.

We are not just pushing urban based shows, but ones that have a global appeal. "Our audience looks to be linked around the world through comedy, action, adventure and drama. We are gender neutral-skewed production entity," states B-Squared's Frank Blenman. AMG's brand positioning is clear. "AMG is skewing increasingly towards the youth. We are catching people young, which is good. While our core audience is between 15-25 years and growing rapidly for us. We are getting in content that they want to watch such as 'Heroes of Hip Hop'," avers Berry. For AMG, reality works the best in terms of online viewership return. Around 55 per cent of B-Squared's viewership comes from reality themed programming.

"We have a team of 10 people looking after different areas like programming, marketing, production etc. We are definitely more flexible. We are on the ground listening to the online community. This is really helping us. We are faster and are quicker to respond to the market, states Blenman.

Toronto, Canada - In its latest aggressive pre-buy to line its slate with star-driven pictures, B-Squared Entertainment, has a month before the Toronto Film Festival, closed a deal to acquire international rights to "The Ghetto", the gritty street drama feature that stars Scarface, Ice T, Tyrin Turner and De'aundre Bonds.

It was directed by respected helmer Manzie Jones, an emmy nominated producer, whose previous directorial credits include Buried Alive and Paranoid Activity 2. The film was expected to be one of the hot titles for domestic and international distribution at the upcoming TIFF market that starts September 4th. It is a commitment for a wide release inclusive of broadcast internationally.

Based on the Scarface and Manzie Jones script, three childhood friends - B, 3D, and Moose, played by Scarface, De'aundre Bonds, and Tyrin Turner respectively - grow up in the inner city of Los Angeles. B turns his ability to organize and recruit to the drug trade when the local drug dealer is shot and killed. B has all the skills needed to thrive and never one to shy away from violence, B turns his neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods into his own personal empire.

As a grown up, B thrives, until a new player starts to muscle in. The new drug kingpin is named Victor, played by Ice T. Victor pushes his drugs into B's neighborhoods and upsets the status quo. B attempts to push Victor back out of his neighborhoods without resorting to violence, but his attempts fail. Now it's time for all-out war. As tit-for-tat violence escalates between the feuding gangs, it becomes apparent that only the man willing to abandon everything he cares about will remain standing.

Like most young music industry executives, he began by fetching coffee and emptying ashtrays. However, by diligently paying attention, Mark gleaned valuable experience production techniques that would serve him well later on.

A concentrated effort to learn about music production enabled Mark to collaborate with several renowned British rock engineers/producers, such as Chris Thomas (Elton John, The Pretenders, Pink Floyd, INXS), John Punter (Japan), Bill Price (Sex Pistols), Alan Harris (Mott The Hoople, T-Rex) and Sir George Martin (The Beatles). Under such tutelage, Mark contributed to projects that were reshaping the face of the rock industry: Roll Over Beethoven by the Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harem's Grand Hotel, and Live - Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple and "Live and Let Die" soundtrack by Paul McCartney & Wings. Another perk was the opportunity to socialize with rock icons. While working on Carly Simon's No Secrets album, an 18 year-old Mark got to hang out with Mick Jagger, who was tracking background vocals for the world-wide smash hit "You're so Vain" and would become his very first engineering credit.

With a few hard-earned credits to his name, Mark returned to the U.S. in the mid 1970s. He freelanced for some of the top recording studios in New York ie: Record Plant, Hit Factory & Jimi Hendrix's Electric LadyLand before being offered the position of Staff Engineer and in-house A&R Producer for Vanguard Records. After Eleven years with Vanguard, he moved into the area of dance and rock remixing. Mark's edgy engineering and mixing techniques significantly contributed to the success of multi-platinum artists such as David Bowie, Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Kool & The Gang, Yes, Cameo, Toto, and Boy George. Mark also discovered alternative rock band I Mother Earth, and orchestrated the group's massive signing success with EMI through the 5-song master he created at Metalworks Studios. This success was followed by more award-winning productions for artists like Hugh Dillion (Flashpoint television program, The Headstones) and Burton Cummings (Guess Who). Finally, Pierre Paradis, the mega-Canadian rock manager, solicited Mark's services to produce Voivod. The resulting Outer Limits (MCA/Universal) album features the 17-minute opus "Jack Luminous," arguably remains one of his most compelling critically acclaimed productions.

Mark is currently attending an undergraduate program specializing in cinema studies at Innis College, University of Toronto, which will assist toward his goal of feature length film and television production. Interview: Mark Berry, Producer/Engineer and Founder of Attack Media Group

Since stepping out of high school in the early 1970s, Brooklyn native Mark Berry has made a name for himself in many styles and areas of popular music. From an auspicious start working with Carly Simon to successful stints with Stephanie Mills, Freeez, and Animotion, the ambitious engineer and mixer has obtained a working knowledge of the entertainment industry's ins and outs, which he's now applying to running his own Toronto-based firm, Attack Media Group.

When was your interest in music first sparked?

I remember riding in the car with my dad as a very young boy, asking "Why is the voice so big? How come the guitar's over here, and the drums are over there?" From a very early age, I was influenced by Motown, Gamble & Huff, Aretha, and Sam & Dave.

What were your first steps towards actually entering the music business?

I didn't want to go to Vietnam when I turned 18, so I did selective service. I decided to go to school and get a trade. I started going to Manhattan at night to the Institute of Audio Research. The classes were held at Vanguard Studios and taught by Al Grundy and Irv Diehl.

How did you make the transition from student to working engineer?

Well, you can't teach compression on a blackboard. At I.A.R. we got to participate in actual engineering projects. I also started writing down the names of recording studios from the back sleeves of my favorite records-Elton John, Pink Floyd. One of the studios was AIR in London. I got my certificate and went to London that summer.

I started hanging out at AIR-getting coffee, emptying ashtrays, and coming back everyday like it was a job. Joyce Moore, the studio manager, eventually hired me as an assistant, and for the next few months I was setting up mics and instruments and dragging equipment. I was in the thick of it.

What led to your break engineering Carly Simon's seminal No Secrets LP?

Because I was an American from Brooklyn, they put us together, and we became good buddies. Richard Perry was the producer. I engineered the guitar and percussion overdubs on "You're So Vain." Most of it was done at Trident Studios. Paul McCartney and Wings did "Live and Let Die" there, as well. I was an uncredited assistant engineer on that record.

I stayed in London for almost two years, and had the chance to work on projects by ELO, The Hollies, and Allan Clarke, as well as on joint sessions by Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder that never came out because of contractual constraints. But I started having immigration problems, so I moved back to the States.

Tell me about your career path once you got back to the U.S.

I was freelancing, working at studios like Electric Ladyland and The Record Plant, when I was hired as an assistant at Vanguard Studios. I served as a tape librarian there for a year-making copies of folk, jazz, and classical works for licensees. Then, I started engineering for the Vanguard label, at which point I got very involved with the disco and hi-NRG scene.

What were some of the highlights of your work during that time?

I did mastering with Herbie "Pump" Powers, who introduced me to Arthur Baker at Frankford Wayne studios. We ended up working together on Afrika Bambaata's "Looking for the Perfect Beat." At Vanguard, I brought in Alisha, and handled A&R, production, engineering, and mixing. She had huge club hits with "All Night Passion" and "Baby Talk" during the mid-'80s. I also did a lot of engineering and remix work with Polydor/Mercury, including Kool & The Gang, Man Parrish, and Cameo.

What is the difference between mixing and remixing?

With a basic radio mix back then, it was a matter of taking the initial production and expanding from there. As a remixer, you're bringing a new ear on the track-percussion, overdubs. When I did 12″ remixes, I'd get all the different performances to tape and put together an arrangement with the best one.

How has the landscape of recording changed since those days?

Today, everyone has Pro Tools and uses the same vocal compressor across 20 channels to fly in the vocals, locked into SMPTE. In the '80s, you had just one left-right compressor that you could use on one thing, which you had to patch out of the machine into the console. We used to record vocals down to the studio two-tracks, mark the tape, cut it together, create loops, put the mic stand with tape all around, and push start. Then came AMS. You could match the vocals for six seconds.

Why did you decide to move to Toronto, and how did you break into the scene here?

The dance music that I was involved with in New York had peaked. I came here in 1990, and attorney Paul Schindler put me together with a management company. I started working more in the rock vein. I made a record with Kenny MacLean of Platinum Blonde. It was nominated for a Juno, and made me in-demand as a producer here. I went on to work on two platinum albums with Headstones and a live album with Burton Cummings.

Since that time, you've delved into the business side of things: founding Attack Media Group. Tell me about the company.

We do developing and marketing for new artists, as well as co-publishing deals and acquisitions. I started working some time ago with the music publishing division of Alliance/Atlantis, a billion-dollar-a-year home entertainment company. They wanted to use some of my clients' music in feature-length films and TV programs. One of our divisions is Attack Trax, We put clients' music onto our website, and music supervisors can search for songs by mood or style. Cherry Lane bought 50% of the publishing, and they handle the administrative and accounting aspects. But Attack is proactive on its own in handling the movie placement infrastucture, and getting songs out around the world. We have a deal with Universal for distribution to online music stores.

What can clients expect when they sign a publishing deal with you?

We do a 50/50 co-publishing deal, which equates to a 75/25 income split in favor of the writer or artist. When the client's catalog has generated in excess of a set amount annually, we'll also do an advance.

What are some of your current projects?

We're doing a lot of streaming deals, and also partnering with a Hong Kong-based management company to launch artists in Asia. One of the artists is Chilla, a half-Chinese, half-Indonesian pop singer whom I produced for the Shanghai Music Group.

Born in New England and raised in New York, Mark's music career began at the Institute of Audio Research (IAR) in New York City. Rather than opt for the typical after-school job of peddling fast food, the seventeen year-old would commute to Manhattan at night where he made records for emerging basement bands. It was good practical experience that served to round out his education. Upon graduating, the kid from Brooklyn was intrigued by the British Beat, and found employment at Sir George Martin's AIR Studios in Oxford Circus, London, England where he worked for over 2 years. Like most young music industry executives, he began by fetching coffee and emptying ashtrays. However, by diligently paying attention, Mark gleaned valuable experience production techniques that would serve him well later on.

A concentrated effort to learn about music production enabled Mark to collaborate with several renowned British rock engineers/producers, such as Chris Thomas (Elton John, The Pretenders, Pink Floyd, INXS), John Punter (Japan), Bill Price (Sex Pistols), Alan Harris (Mott The Hoople, T-Rex) and Sir George Martin (The Beatles). Under such tutelage, Mark contributed to projects that were reshaping the face of the rock industry: Roll Over Beethoven by the Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harem's Grand Hotel, and Live - Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple and "Live and Let Die" soundtrack by Paul McCartney & Wings. Another perk was the opportunity to socialize with rock icons. While working on Carly Simon's No Secrets album, an 18 year-old Mark got to hang out with Mick Jagger, who was tracking background vocals for the world-wide smash hit "You're so Vain" and would become his very first engineering credit.

With a few hard-earned credits to his name, Mark returned to the U.S. in the mid 1970s. He freelanced for some of the top recording studios in New York ie: Record Plant, Hit Factory & Jimi Hendrix's Electric LadyLand before being offered the position of Staff Engineer and in-house A&R Producer for Vanguard Records. After Eleven years with Vanguard, he moved into the area of dance and rock remixing. Mark's edgy engineering and mixing techniques significantly contributed to the success of multi-platinum artists such as David Bowie, Duran

Duran, Billy Idol, Kool & The Gang, Yes, Cameo, Toto, and Boy George. Mark was also introduced to Michael Gudinski, the president of Mushroom Records & Frontier Touring, Australia's largest independent record label and concert promotion firm where he went on to produce several multi-platinum albums released by the label garnering 7 top 10 singles in that country alone.

In 1991, Mark relocated to Toronto. That same year, he worked with the band Glass Tiger (Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone) and produced the album Get Off for multi-platinum band Haywire. Mark also discovered alternative rock band I Mother Earth, and orchestrated the group's massive signing success with EMI through the 5-song master he created at Metalworks Studios. This success was followed by more award-winning productions for artists like Hugh Dillion (Flashpoint television program, The Headstones) and Burton Cummings (Guess Who). Finally, Pierre Paradis, the mega-Canadian rock manager, solicited Mark's services to produce Voivod. The resulting Outer Limits (MCA/Universal) album features the 17-minute opus "Jack Luminous," arguably remains one of his most compelling critically acclaimed productions.

Mark is currently attending an undergraduate program specializing in cinema studies at Innis College, University of Toronto, which will assist toward his goal of feature length film and television production. His dedication to remain one step ahead of the pack validates all of the success he has enjoyed. His first book, Risking Nothing Would be Way too Risky for Me, is due for release in the Summer of 2014. The book offers some insight about production, engineering, mixing as well as becoming an entrepreneur in this rapidly evolving world of music & media.
