With the New Year comes resolutions and CruiseOne®, the nation’s largest home-based and military-friendly franchise travel agent network as part of World Travel Holdings, has resolved that in 2014 military veterans and active-duty military spouses will make up at least 25 percent of its franchise network by the end of the year, an increase of nearly 10 percent.

“At CruiseOne we salute military veterans and their spouses and we acknowledge that military service experience translates well into small business ownership,” said Tim Courtney, vice president of franchise development and ambassador of veteran affairs for CruiseOne. “We find that strong leadership, discipline and trainability are several of the skills military veterans bring to business ownership, and these are also among the reasons they are some of the most successful franchise owners.”

CruiseOne offers many military veteran incentive programs. Those who served in the U.S. armed forces receive a 20 percent discount off the franchise fee. To further increase support in this area, in 2014 CruiseOne is launching a new veteran employ-ment program offering discounts for franchise owners who hire former members of the U.S. military or active-duty military spouses as associates. The first associate fee of $495 will be waived; any additional associates hired who are veterans or ac-tive-duty military spouses will be offered at half-price, a value of $248. In addition, for the past two years the company has hosted its annual “Operation Vetrepreneur: Become Your Own General” contest, which awards five deserving military veter-ans with a free CruiseOne franchise. Each year, the contest starts on Memorial Day and concludes in the fall, with a special ceremony featuring city and state government officials.

“I am so honored to have won a CruiseOne travel franchise and I appreciate the commitment that CruiseOne makes to mili-tary veterans,” said Grant Springer, CruiseOne franchise owner, 2013 Operation Vetrepreneur winner and Army veteran. “As I continue to grow my business, I look forward to hiring other former members of the U.S. military as associates so they can experience the beneficial veteran employment opportunities that CruiseOne offers.”

A member of the International Franchise Association’s (IFA) VetFran initiative, CruiseOne proudly supports former mem-bers of the U.S. military and is consistently recognized by leading industry publications as a military-friendly franchise for its dedication to veteran employment. The company’s accolades include a number one ranking by Forbes in its “Top 10 Military Friendly Franchise” and inclusion on the “Top 100 Vet-Friendly Franchise” lists by Franchise Business Review and 1851, in addition to being named a “Top Franchise for Veterans” by Opportunity World. For the past four years, CruiseOne was named to G.I. Jobs magazine’s Military Friendly Franchises® lists, which represents the top 10 percent of the nation’s fran-chises that are doing the most to support former U.S. troops.

If you are interested in a travel franchise opportunity and joining CruiseOne, please visit http://www.CruiseOneBiz.com or call 888-249-8235.

TXT Messages Help Vets Quit with SmokefreeVET

If you've ever tried to quit smoking, you know it is one of the hardest goals to accomplish. Studies show that a good support system is one of the keys to quitting. A new mobile text-messaging service from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) can help by delivering smoking cessation support directly to your mobile phone.

Known as SmokefreeVET, the program sends participating Veterans text messages of encouragement, advice and tips to help you quit and stay quit. You will receive between one and five messages per day for up to eight weeks. And for those times when you need even more support, SmokefreeVET can help. Just text a keyword and the service will send you extra messages on-demand at any time.

"Support is incredibly important for anyone trying to quit smoking," said Dana Christofferson, PhD, Presi-dential Management Fellow, Tobacco & Health: Policy and Programs, Veterans Health Administration.

"SmokefreeVET is like the bird on your shoulder saying, 'You can do this. Great job!'" VA developed the SmokefreeVET program in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), which offers a similar texting program for quitting smoking. Since launching their program in 2011, NCI has helped more than 14,000 subscribers.

With its Veteran-specific messages, SmokefreeVET aims to achieve similar results and reach as many Veterans as NCI's program. VA clinicians reviewed and approved all of the messages for the program. Messages were also reviewed with input from Veterans who have quit or hope to quit smoking.

Support When You Need It Once you sign-up, SmokefreeVET begins sending daily texts in the two weeks leading up to your quit date and for six weeks thereaf-ter. Each message is carefully timed and selected to support your quitting progress. For example:

SmokefreeVET: You are getting closer to the big day. It may help to cut back on the number of cigarettes you smoke. Give it a try. SmokefreeVET: Today is your quit day. The big day is here-you can do this! You are stronger than you think so stay positive. Are you ready? Reply: READY or NOT

And when you need extra support, text "Urge", "Smoked" or "Stress" to 47848 and SmokefreeVET responds:

SmokefreeVET: Don't let one slip be an excuse to give up. Try again. Figure out what triggered your slip and find ways to avoid it next time.

"All of the messages are timed according to your quit date," said Christofferson. "There are more messages per day on quit day and during the first one or two weeks because that's when [smokers] need the most support and are likely to relapse." When the six weeks are done, SmokefreeVET follows up with text questions at one, three and six months to assess how you are doing. You can stop the message program at any time by texting "STOP." All the information you provide to SmokefreeVET is confidential. It is not shared with your health care team, nor is it entered into your electronic health record. Plan your quitting success Different people need different resources to stop smoking. SmokefreeVET gives you another option. My HealtheVet can also help. Use My Goals under "Track Health" to plan your quit strategy and track your progress (registration is required – and it's free).

VA also offers other resources to help you quit smoking. You have the best chance at success when you combine SmokefreeVET with smoking cessation medications and behavioral counseling from your health care provider. Talk to your VA health care team and ask about medications that can help curb your smoking urges. It may take several attempts to quit. Keep trying. Your health is worth it.

Once An Eagle is the story of one special man, a soldier named Sam Damon, and his adversary over a lifetime, fellow officer Courtney Massengale. Damon is a professional who puts duty, honor, and the men he commands above self interest. Massengale, how-ever, brilliantly advances by making the right connections behind the lines and in Washington’s corridors of power.

Beginning in the French countryside during the Great War, the conflict between these adversaries solidifies in the isolated garrison life marking peacetime, intensifies in the deadly Pacific jungles of World War 11, and reaches its treacherous conclusion in the last major battleground of the Cold War – Vietnam.

A study in character and values, courage, nobility, honesty, and selflessness, here is an unforgettable story about a man who embodies the best in our nation – and in us all.

"Also remember that in any man's dark hour, a pat on the back and an earnest handclasp may work a small miracle" - Brigadier-General S.L.A Marshaller 1950

LADIES OF THE NIGHT By Barry C. Lefferts

They work in pairs, they work alone They stand on corners like a stone They walk the streets of every town Some wear jeans, some wear a gown They come in black, the come in white Those ladies, ladies of the night They approach you in different styles They say hello with different smiles Their offer is always the same Just buy a ticket to their game They’re looking for you to bite Those ladies, ladies of the night And when morning comes around They are nowhere to be found To their havens they all creep As they cry themselves to sleep Some have lovers of a kind Some have pimps that stay behind And they may call them dear and honey As they milk them of their money It’s a sad and lonely plight For those ladies, ladies of the night They grow old and they grow gray And then no one wants to pay So they drink and stay in bed Just waiting until they’re dead And no candles do we light For those ladies, ladies of the night

From the world wars of Europe to the jungles of the Far East, from the deserts of the Middle East to the African continent, and even here in our own hemisphere, our veterans have made the world a better place and America the great country we are today. ~John Hoeven

Why the Veterans Advantage mission is important:

In 1789, General and President George Washington spoke these words,

"The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their country."

It's hard to believe these words were written more than 200 years ago because they have such meaning today. We all know what Washington was saying. We must acknowledge and reward the service of our Veterans if we are to expect our young people to serve our country and to defend our freedoms.

The Government must do its part with public benefits. All of us as citizens must do our part in honoring Veterans on our national holidays. The great corporations of this country need to do their part, too. After all, corporations are the direct beneficiaries of Veteran's service because collectively, Veterans have preserved the free enterprise system under which corporations operate.

"My Grandfather, Samuel Selvin Stuart was a WW1 veteran. He came home shell-shocked and was never able to function in society again. He died in 1963 at the VA Hospital in St Louis MO. He left 3 children and now there are many grandchildren, gr-children, gggrandchildren and ggggrandchildren. I never saw him. I know very little about him. Tommy Sowers: Facts about VA health care and benefits

By Tommy Sowers February 25, 2014

America's veterans deserve the very best this nation can offer to honor their service and sacrifice. The 337,000 employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs — nearly one-third of whom, like me, are veterans themselves — care deeply for every veteran we are privileged to serve.

What veterans do not deserve is misinformation and distortions that may cause them to avoid seeking the services and benefits they earned.

VA operates the largest integrated health care system in the country, with 1,700 sites of care. VA is consistently recognized for excellence by independent reviews and organizations. From the Annals of Internal Medicine, to the Joint Commission and the RAND Corporation, VA health care outperforms the private sector in quality of care, treating acute and chronic illnesses and in delivering preventive care. We do this with transparency, down to posting public data about each hospital's performance.

VA provides, veterans and eligible family members, more than 236,000 health-care appointments. In surveys, veterans consistently give VA health care high marks, comparable to private sector ratings.

Yet no health care system of this size and complexity can be free of error, some tragic. When an incident occurs, we do what we learned in the military: Acknowledge it. Learn from it. Then, work to fix it.

Misinformation about VA care comes at a huge human cost, discouraging those who might reach out for help. For instance, veteran suicide is a national tragedy made worse because the vast majority of veterans who take their lives are not enrolled in VA health care. We estimate that over a million uninsured veterans could qualify for VA health care; but because they don't know or are given misinformation, they may forgo a lifetime of earned care and benefits.

Since 2009, Secretary Eric Shinseki has led an unprecedented expansion of access to VA care and benefits. Over two million new veterans have enrolled in VA health care. Over one million veterans and their families have benefited from the post-Sept. 11 GI Bill. In 2013, VA guaranteed a record number of home loans and provided $53.6 billion in disability compensation to 3.6 million veterans.

Our nation has pledged to honor the service of these brave men and women. Those of us charged with providing those care and benefits will continue to serve and improve. Veterans deserve no less.

I recently received a letter from DAV headquarters stating

that 97% of the public turn their backs on veterans. There are

many scams to collect money falsely on the behalf of veterans.

Our magazine (AVM) strives to inform and bring about awareness

to the plight of Today’s vets.

The AVM is trying to acquire a 66 acre, 41 building property to be

used as a retreat for the 57,000 homeless veterans. We want to

invite all veteran organizations to join us in this opportunity for a

common cause. “Anything is possible”.

Again, I wish to thank all of the advertisers in this publication
