Sanad extends relationship with Etihad Airways by US$100m

Sanad Aero Solutions GmbH (Sanad), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company, has increased its leasing portfolio of spare engines and components with Etihad Air-ways through the addition of new assets valued at US$100m, including spare GEnx and GP7200 engines and spare landing gear and nacelles, to support the airline’s growing fleet of B777, B787, A320 and A380 aircraft. With the additional as-sets, the overall value of Sanad’s leasing relation-ship with Etihad Airways now exceeds US$450m. Sanad’s relationship with Etihad Airways began in 2011 through the financing of 11 GE90 and Rolls-Royce Trent spare engines, and the two companies extended this in 2013 through the financing of rotable component spares valued at over US$125m.

Lufthansa Cargo welcomes fifth Boeing 777F in Frankfurt

The modernisation of Lufthansa Cargo’s fleet continues: on February 12th, 2015, the fifth Boeing 777F of the cargo airline landed in Frank-furt for the first time. On a flight lasting approxi-mately nine hours the crew, under chief pilot Claus Richter, had transferred the Triple Seven

sector for economic development. “In fact, the US CEOs who now complain about these poli-cies, not long ago publicly said they envied such pro-aviation growth vision and called for the U.S. to emulate them,” Mitchell said.

Every country has its unique collection of di-rect and indirect subsidies and structural ad-vantages. The BTC highlights that the U.S. is no different. “Our carriers can reduce expenses in bankruptcy proceedings, shift pension liabilities to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, benefit from general revenues from the U.S. Treasury that flow into the airport and airway trust fund and avoid ticket taxes on billions of

dollars in revenues through ancillary fees and carrier-imposed charges,” the Coalition further stated.

The three American airlines argue that the subsidies being lavished on the three Gulf airlines are so extreme that the Obama administration must act. “BTC would like to see the evi-dence that the Gulf carriers have re-ceived more direct and indirect sub-sidies than U.S. carriers and that it represents a material amount neces-sary to create an unfair competitive advantage,” Mitchell questioned. ARKIA commits to Airbus A330-900neo

ARKIA Israeli Airlines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for up to four A330-900neo aircraft. The commitment makes ARKIA the first Airbus widebody customer in Israel and the first customer for the type in the region. The aircraft will help ARKIA to expand their growing operations into long haul business and leisure markets with the world’s most popular widebody. The A330-900neo is the most cost-efficient in its size category, offering a reduction in fuel burn of 14% per seat, an increase in non-stop flying range of up to 400 nauti-cal miles and the lowest possible maintenance costs. ARKIA’s A330-900neo will join the four A321neo aircraft ordered at the Farnborough International Airshow in 2012. With Airbus’ Cross Crew Qualification concept, pilots and engineers can quickly transition from the single-aisle A320 Family to the twin-aisle A330. Airlines can operate and maintain both types with the same pool of pilots and engineers. The A330neo also offers the latest in in-flight entertainment either 4th generation or light IFE. Moreover, it offers connectivity to the ground should it be mobile telephony and internet access services, and in parallel on board wireless services enabling pas-sengers to access Wi-Fi content and services on their personal electronic devices.

Chameleon and Flying Service collaborate to create “ESP”, the new economy seat

Chameleon Products, a special-ist interior supplier and Flying Service, a UK-based Aircraft seat manufacturer, who have been producing seats for over 50 years, have collaborated to produce a new economy seat called ESP. The ESP (Extend-able Seat Product) converts from a standard economy seat into a lounger seat which ena-bles passengers to lie flat in a sleeping position or to relax with other travelling compan-ions or family. The seat which has been produced can also be used to differentiate new areas in the cabin and provide new revenue streams for airlines, by allowing them to utilise unsold seat places on flights offering the “ESP” option or by offer-ing “ESP” as a part of a reward or upgrade package. The ESP seat can be produced for any aircraft type and certification is about 12 weeks. The product can quickly enter service with A330 operators in particular as Flying Service already have a 16G A330 approved stand-ard economy seat at a 34 inch pitch. However the ESP seat has been designed to go into a 29 inch pitch allowing more seats to be put into the aircraft. The seat, when not in its ESP mode, can be used as a normal economy seat. New economy seat ESP as standard and ESP as lounger

Air Canada has been advised by UNITE, the union representing the airline’s U.K.-based employees that its members have ratified a new collective agreement reached on January 30th, 2015. The new agreement is in effect un-til December 31st, 2019. UNITE represents ap-proximately 200 Air Canada concierge service, cargo and clerical staff based in the United Kingdom. This agreement with UNITE follows on the conclusion in October 2014 of a new agreement with Air Canada’s pilots on collec-tive agreement terms for ten years. Earlier in February, Air Canada also reached a tentative collective agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) representing its U.S. workforce.

The new Eurowings will have its first base outside Germany in Vienna. Following close consultation with Austrian Airlines and at the carrier’s own request, two Airbus A320 air-craft are to be stationed there initially, offer-ing point-to-point connections on European routes. The aircraft are to fly in the colors of the new Eurowings. It is planned to staff the aircraft with crews from Austrian Airlines. This partnership is possible as a result of Austrian’s new collective agreement, which was entered into in December 2014 and which offers ad-ditional prospects to the 900 pilots and 2,300 flight attendants. The agreement also means that employees are making an important contribution to the future viability and com-petitiveness of Austrian Airlines. With the new Eurowings brand, the Lufthansa Group is entering new markets in the price-sensitive leisure travel sector, thereby safeguarding its leading position in its home markets of Ger-many, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium. By the end of 2015, Eurowings and Germanwings, along with other European airlines, are to be united on a joint platform and should acquire new customers by offering low-cost short- and long-haul services, in doing so providing qual-ity at low prices.

Following approval by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Lufthansa LEOS, a subsid-iary of Lufthansa Technik AG, has commenced operations with the innovative TaxiBot aircraft tractor, developed by Israel Aerospace Indus-tries (IAI) with Lufthansa LEOS’ extensive sup-port and cooperation. After extensive testing, the TaxiBot will now be used in real flight op-erations at Frankfurt Airport. At a media event held at Frankfurt Airport on February 19th, the TaxiBot’s towing procedures were demon-strated for local and international journalists, while taxiing a Lufthansa Boeing 737 to the take-off position. TaxiBot (NB) is a towbar-less 800-hp strong hybrid-electric aircraft tractor, controlled by the pilot and intended for tow-ing aircraft between the gate and the runway

Northrop Grumman delivers 1,000th dis-tributed Aperture System for the F-35

Northrop Grumman recently supplied the 1,000th AN/AAQ-37 Distributed Aperture Sys-tem (DAS) sensor for integration on the F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The six infrared DAS sen-sors on the F-35 provide full spherical situ-ational awareness to the pilot, day and night. The DAS provides a revolutionary capability to autonomously detect and track aircraft and missiles in every direction, while projecting video directly into the pilot’s helmet mounted display and eliminating cockpit obscurities. With DAS, the pilot has an unprecedented view and awareness of the surrounding world. In flight testing, the DAS has demonstrated the ability to expand into additional missions and platforms, including ballistic missile defense, hostile ground fire detection and unmanned aircraft operations. DAS flight demonstrations have included tracking a rocket to over 800 miles (1300km) distance.

in the prior year. The 2014 fourth quarter included US$43.7m in incremental sales for acquired businesses. Organic sales increased US$16.9m, or 16.1%. Aerospace segment sales increased US$25.9m to US$128.6m and Test Systems segment sales increased US$34.7m to US$37.5m. Consolidated gross margin was 25.6% compared with 23.9% in the fourth quarter of 2013. Margins expanded on leverage achieved from increased organic sales volume and lower expense related to the fair value step-up of inventory from acquired businesses which was somewhat offset by higher engineering and development (“E&D”) costs. Expense related to the fair value step-up of inventory from acquired businesses was US$0.8m and US$3.5m in the 2014 and 2013 fourth quarters, respectively. E&D costs were US$19.7m, which included US$3.8m for acquired businesses. E&D costs in the prior year’s fourth quarter were US$14.3m.

dition to being efficient, economical and en-vironmentally friendly, the Navy’s specifica-tions require JBT to meet military standards for equipment built to withstand the effects of shipboard shock and vibration, temperature extremes, humidity and salt spray, and elec-tro-magnetic interference (EMI). This contract order is the first phase of a larger potential multi-year equipment contract. The order was received in the first quarter of 2015, with de-livery on the project expected to be initiated in 2016.
