    CONTENT AND STRUCTURE

    Administrative/Biographical

    History:

The American Union of Swedish Singers (AUSS) (Svenska Sångarförbundet i America in

Swedish) was organized in 1892 to serve as a national umbrella organization for individual

Swedish choirs in the United States. “The objectives of the A.U.S.S. are to promote and

perpetuate Swedish chorus singing and knowledge of Swedish songs, cultivate an appreciation of

Swedish music, and work for unity and cooperation between Swedish choruses in the United

    States and Canada” (from website).

The Union’s first festival was during the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Over

the years, the Union has performed for kings and presidents and sung in significant performance

halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City.

The Union has arranged national singing conventions nearly every 4 years where a number of

individual choirs, well-known soloists, and guest conductors from Sweden are invited to

participate. The purpose of the national convention is to give individual choirs the opportunity to

perform and sing together in a Grand Concert. In 1938, a convention was held in Philadelphia in

conjunction with the 300th anniversary of the Delaware Swedish settlement. Conventions were

not held during WWII. Regional divisions (Eastern, Central, and Western) also host conventions

during off years of national conventions.

In the early years, most songs were sung in Swedish. More recently, the repertoire of most

choruses is divided between Swedish and English. In 2010, the AUSS had 28 member choruses

    and approximately 600 members.

The AUSS Cultural Heritage Foundation was founded in 1979 to preserve the history of AUSS.

The organization maintains a room at the Midway Village Museum in Rockford, Illinois. The

Heritage Foundation promotes that growth of the AUSS and offers financial assistance to new

    choirs.

    Scope and Content:

    The AUSS records include minutes and reports from 1896-2000s; constitution and by-laws;

Musiktidning journal and newsletter; presidential records and correspondence; records from

individual choruses; records from the Divisions; scores of music performed; photographs; and

    some sound recordings.

    System of Arrangement:

The collection is arranged into the following series. Collection is arranged by subject first, and

then chronologically within series, as feasible.
