Note: Information on Henry Walton is sparse, butaccording to the exhibition catalogue, Henry Walton: 19thCentury American Artist, December 9, 1968–January 4,1969, for the Ithaca College Museum of Art (CuyahogaPress, 1968), he was the son of the wealthy Judge HenryWalton of New York City, Ballston Spa, and SaratogaSprings, New York. Young Henry was probably educatedin England, as was his father, and may have received sometraining in architectural drawing, a skill demonstrated in hisviews of towns in upstate New York. His earliest worksdate from 1820. In the late 1830s, he moved to the FingerLakes region, living in Ithaca for a time, and went to workfor the engraving firm of Stone and Clark. During thistime, he also began to paint portraits, and typically paintedsmall, highly detailed watercolors. However, after 1839, hebegan to paint in oil also, but his oil paintings remain muchless common than his watercolors and drawings. In 1851,Walton joined a gold rush party and traveled to California.He and his wife, Jane Orr Walton, later moved toMichigan, where he died in 1890.

Examples of his work can be seen at the MetropolitanMuseum of Art (New York City), The Abby AldrichRockefeller Folk Art Museum (Williamsburg, Virginia), theShelburne Museum (Shelburne, Vermont), and theFenimore Art Museum/New York State Historical Society(Cooperstown, New York).
