All of this plus; boxing, track and field, swimming, the Rose Bowl and thousands of minor sporting events were seen through the eyes of Allin Slate. I. Introduction

Los Angeles in the 1960’s and 70’s was considered by many to be the sports capitol of

the world. In that period, L.A. was home to the Dodgers and Angels of baseball, the NFL Rams,

and the sports programs of both the UCLA Bruins and the USC Trojans. All of this plus; boxing,

track and field, swimming, the Rose Bowl and thousands of minor sporting events were seen

through the eyes of Allin Slate. His voice, style and intellect brought these events to Angelinos

on a daily bases through the “talk radio” format which he helped to pioneer.

The Allin Slate Collection was donated to the American Radio Archives at the Thousand

Oaks Library by the daughters of Mr. Allin Slate on February 22, 2000.

II. Biography

Allin Slate was born in Illinois, and grew up in Los Angeles. In an interview for Los

Angeles Radio People, Slate said that, "I was the kid who sat in the bleachers and called the

game." He was a radio actor before World War II and worked in dramas with Jack Webb. "I was

working in the sound and lighting department at the Biltmore Bowl while studying at the

Pasadena Playhouse. A waiter suggested that I try radio acting."

Allin Slate began broadcasting at KULA in Honolulu and then at Glendale Radio Station

KIEV in 1950. He remained at KIEV for 12 years when he moved to Los Angeles Radio Station

KABC in 1963. In 1964 Slate became the sports director of KABC. Allin Slate has been

credited as the originator of the “Sports Talk,” radio format popular even today. He worked with

Leo Durocher and Jimmy Piersall in the mid 60’s, and became a regular with Keith Jackson on

Sports Scoreboard on television KABC/Channel 7 in Los Angeles.. Later Allin joined the daily

lineup on KNX News radio in 1969, and remained there until his retirement in 1978.

His career had many highlights. He starred as Jason, opposite Dame Judith Anderson, in

the Honolulu production of Medea; he was the two-time winner of the Associated Press, Golden

Mike Award for excellence in broadcast journalism. He was honored by the Los Angeles Sentinel

newspaper for showing fairness and consideration in reporting on the treatment of African

American athletes in the Mexico City Olympics. Allin Slate was also past president of Southern

California Sports Broadcasters Association and a long time member and supporter of AFTRA.

Allin was a poet, artist and writer with a great sense of humor. Slate suffered a stroke in

1990 that slowed him down, "but did not stop him," according to his daughter Lynne Darnell.

Slate had Parkinson's disease and died on July 21, 2000, at the age of 79.1

III. Scope and Content

The Allin Slate Collection of the American Radio Archives at the Thousand Oaks Library

contains over 400 open reel audio tapes. About half of these tapes are recordings of the weekly

luncheons of the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Association where Slate served as a

president. The earliest SCSBA tape is from October 5, 1961 and the most recent is dated on

February 28, 1973. The bulk of these recordings cover the years 1964-1968. The SCSBA

meetings generally consisted of introductions, announcements, a “weekly report” by the head

coach or field manager of whatever teams were currently in season, and then a featured speaker

along with questions and answers. While there are many gaps in the tape chronology of these

meetings, it is complete enough to say that practically any sporting event or sports related news

in Southern California from 1964 to 1969 is covered in the collection.

The rest of the tapes are post game or on the air interviews, portions of his radio show,

commercials, sound checks and many other interesting bits and pieces. The earliest date in this

sequence is 1955 and the latest is in 1974. The major part of this collection covers the 1965-

1967 period. There are also about 175 tapes which are not dated. These tapes contain a number

of very interesting interviews. The interviewees include: Richard Nixon, John H. Glenn, Craig

Breedlove, Muhammad Ali, Jack Kent Cook, Sam Yorty, Jesse Owens, and a long list of

baseball, football, and basketball future Hall of Famers.

In addition, the collection contains newspaper clippings, radio station advertisements, on

the air copy, correspondence, awards, event programs, photographs, and other memorabilia

contained in 4 boxes (about 4 linear feet).
