Transcript of American Presidents - Latham, NY - Latham 76 · PDF fileAmerican Presidents 2nd • John...

17th • Andrew JohnsonApril 1865 to March 1869

Indentured to a cloth maker, he bought his freedom after several

years for $30. His wife, Eliza taught him how to read and write.

13th • Millard FillmoreJuly 1850 to March 1853

He replaced the use of open fireplaces for cooking White House meals with

a cast iron stove. He then had to teach the cook how to use it.

9th • William H. HarrisonMarch 1841 to April 1841

After delivering the longest inaugural speech, 8,443 words, on a cold, stormy

day, without hat or coat, he caught pneumonia and died a month later.

5th • James MonroeMarch 1817 to March 1825

His wife, Elizabeth, is attributed with saving the life of Adrienne de Lafayette, wife of

the American hero from France. Adrienne’s mother and grandmother had been

guillotined during the French Revolution.

7th • Andrew JacksonMarch 1829 to April 1841

Nicknamed “Old Hickory,” he lived with a bullet lodged next to his heart. It was a result of a duel over an insult

to his wife, Racheal, a divorcee.

1st • George WashingtonApril 1789 to March 1797

The Father of our Country, apparently his mother didn’t think much about him going

off to be a general and such, he should stay home and take care of business.

3rd • Thomas JeffersonMarch 1801 to March 1809

Thomas was also an architect, botanist, farmer, gourmet, lawyer, linguist, mathematician, meteorologist,

paleontologist, inventor, writer, etc.

American Presidents

2nd • John AdamsMarch 1797 to March 1801 He said about the Presidency,

“No man who ever held the office of President would congratulate

a friend on obtaining it.”

4th • James MadisonMarch 1809 to March 1817

His beloved First Lady, Dolly, wasn’t his first love. He had been engaged to Kitty Floyd, but she wrote him a ‘Dear John’ letter, sealed with bread dough.

6th • John Quincy AdamsMarch 1825 to March 1829

Think you had it tough? Louisa Adams, wife of John Quincy, read the Dialogues of Plato to their sons in the original Greek!

8th • Martin Van BurenMarch 1837 to March 1841

Nicknamed “Old Kinderhook,” after his hometown Kinderhook, NY. An abbreviation

was used as a political slogan. Some say this is the origin of our “O.K.”

10th • John TylerApril 1841 to March 1845

The First Lady, Julia Tyler, introduced the playing of “Hail to the Chief” to

honor the president. It was an old Gaelic melody adapted to a musical drama.

11th • James K. PolkMarch 1845 to March 1849

Sarah Polk outlived her hard-working husband by 42 years. In that time,

she never left her home, except to attend church on Sundays.

12th • Zachary TaylorMarch 1849 to July 1850

He didn’t care for a young lieutenant on his staff wooing his daughter, but they

married. A bigger rift came later. His son-in-law was Jefferson Davis, President

of the Confederate States of America.

15th • James BuchananMarch 1857 to March 1861

When the Prince of Wales visited the White House, the future King

of England slept in the President’s room and James slept on the sofa.

14th • Franklin PierceMarch 1853 to March 1857

When his wife, Jane, heard her husband had been nominated to run for president,

she fainted. That was in 1852!

16th • Abraham LincolnMarch 1861 to April 1865

About the presidency, “I’m like the man, tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail.” Asked how he felt, he said, “If

it weren’t for the honor of the thing, (he) would rather have walked.”

18th • Ulysses S. GrantMarch 1869 to March 1877

While he was not the only President to die penniless, his autobiography,

published after his death, earned his estate a half-million dollars.

19th • Rutherford B. HayesMarch 1877 to March 1881

After congressmen complained the kiddie Easter egg-rolling at the capital ruined

the grass, the First Lady moved it to the White House. It started a tradition.

20th • James GarfieldMarch 1881 to September 1881

Beginning as a mule driver on the Erie Canal, he became a “Classics” man. He

could simultaneously write Greek with one hand while writing Latin with the other.
