Purpose and ScopeUse this documentation as a guide for managing APC UPS devices with the SPECTRUM management module SM-APC1000. This document describes the icons, menus, and views that enable you to remotely monitor, configure, and troubleshoot APC UPS devices through software models in your SPECTRUM database.

Information specific to the SM-APC1000 is what is primarily included in this document. For general information about device management using SPECTRUM and for explanations of basic

SPECTRUM functionality and navigation techniques, refer to the topics listed under Required Reading.

Supported Devices The SPECTRUM management module SM-APC1000 currently allows you to model twenty different types of APC UPS devices as described below.

The American Power Conversion UPS is a management module that allows for modeling of most APC UPS devices based on SNMP-compliant management agents over TCP/IP. This management module allows the user to graphically display UPS devices, such as the ones listed under Supported Devices. Testing a UPS device for various conditions is one function of this software but some devices can also be configured.

Smart-UPS protects your data by supplying network-grade battery backup when power fails. The following are Smart-UPS devices:

Matrix-UPS means high reliability, low operating costs and manageability that will defend both your datacenter and your bottom line. It is a modular power protection for servers, mid-range systems, and business critical applications. The following are Matrix UPS devices:

Master Switch is a remote power distribution unit (PDU) that allows users to control power to connected devices. There is one Master Switch device, the V1.

Symmetra Rack Mount is an ideal solution for branch office locations, small and medium business data centers, internet working and telecom racks, and all other high availability applications within this power range. In addition to the advantages of hot-swappability and redundancy, rack users can also benefit from Symmetra's self-diagnosing, scalable components and integrated Web/SNMP management features. The unit can also be used in a floor standing stand alone applications.

The UPS APC 9605 Web/SNMP Management Card provides full management of UPSs via multiple open standards like Telnet, HTTP, and SNMP. It allows you to monitor and configure your APC UPSs to shut down and reboot your computer systems.

The SPECTRUM ModelThe model type for the APC UPS device is UpsApc92xx.

Modeling results in the creation of Device icons that represent the devices and Application icons that represent their supported applications.

The Device icons contain double-click zones and provide access to Icon Subviews menus that let you perform device management activities such as those listed in Tasks on Page 9.

As Figure 1 shows, the appearance of the Device icons varies slightly depending on the kind of view it appears in.

Device Views

This section describes the Device views and subviews available for models of American Power Conversion UPS devices in SPECTRUM.

Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the UpsApc92xx Device icon, select Device .

This view provides dynamic configuration and performance information for each of the device’s serial/network I/O ports, which are represented by Interface icons in the bottom panel of the view, as shown in Figure 2. The middle panel of the view also displays a Device icon, which allows you to monitor device operation and access other device-specific views.

Interface Number LabelThis label displays the interface number.

IF Status LabelThis label displays the current Operational Status of the interface (see Table 1). Note that the background color of the label also depends on the interface’s current Administrative Status, which is set by the user (see Interface Status View on Page 13). This view can be accessed by double-clicking this label.

Interface Type LabelThis label identifies the type of interface—e.g., Ethernet, FDDI, Other, etc. Double-click this label to access the APC Interface Configuration View (Page 32).

Interface Status ViewAccess: From the Icon Subviews menu for the Interface icon in the Interface Device view, select IF Status .

This view provides information on the operational status of the interface and allows you to enable or disable the port.

Operational StatusThe current state of the interface. Valid values are: Up, Down, Testing or Unknown.

Administrative StatusThis button allows you to select the desired operational state of the interface. Valid values are: On, Off , or Testing .

Secondary Address PanelAccess: From the Icon Subviews menu for the Interface icon in the Interface Device view, select Secondary Address Panel .

This panel provides a table of IP addresses and masks obtained from the Address Translation Table within the device’s firmware. You can change the current address displayed in the IP Address field by selecting an entry from the table in this panel and clicking the Update button.

Device Topology View

This section describes the Device Topology view available for models of the American Power Conversion UPS devices.

Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the Device icon, select Device Topology .

The Device Topology view (Figure 4) shows the connections between a modeled device and other network entities. The lower panel of the view uses Interface icons to represent the device’s serial, network, and I/O ports. These icons provide the same information and menu options as those in the Device Views (Page 10). If a device is connected to a particular interface, a Device icon appears on the vertical bar above the Interface icon along with an icon representing the network group that contains the device.

Application Views

This section describes the main Application view and the associated application-specific subviews available for models of American Power Conversion UPS devices in SPECTRUM.

Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the Device icon, select Application .

Main Application ViewWhen a device model is created, SPECTRUM automatically creates models for each of the major and minor applications supported by the device. The main Application view identifies all of these application models, shows their current condition status, and provides access to application-specific subviews. Figure 5 shows this view in the Icon mode. If you prefer the List mode, which displays applications as text labels, select View > Mode > List.

This view provides the following information:

Conserve BatterySetting this variable to Yes causes a UPS currently running on battery to be put into sleep mode. The UPS will turn back on when power is restored. Setting this field to No has no effect.

Turn UPS OffSetting this variable to Yes causes the UPS to shut off. When in this state, the UPS will not provide output power regardless of the input line state. The ON/OFF switch on the UPS must be toggled for the UPS to return to operation. Setting this value to No has no effect. Setting this value to turnUpsOffGracefully causes the UPS to shut down after a delay period.

Reboot UPSSetting this variable to Yes causes the UPS to shut off and turn back on. Setting this value to No has no effect. Setting this value to rebootUpsGracefully will reboot the UPS after a delay period.

Put UPS to SleepSetting this variable to Yes causes the UPS to go to sleep for the time specified in Sleep Time . When in sleep mode, the UPS will not provide output power regardless of the input line state. Once the specified time has elapsed, output power will be restored. Calibration ResultsThe results of the last runtime calibration. A value of ok means a successful runtime calibration.

Diagnostics ResultsThe results of the last UPS diagnostics test performed. Possible values are: OK, Failed, Invalid Test , and Test In Progress .

Run Time CalibrationSetting this variable to Perform causes the UPS to calibrate. The test will only start if the battery capacity is 100%. The test runs until capacity is less than 25%. Setting this variable to Cancel after setting this variable to Perform will cancel the current discharge. Setting this variable to None has no effect.

DiagnosticsSetting this variable to Test causes the UPS to perform a diagnostic self test. Setting this value to No Test has no effect.

Diagnostics ScheduleThe UPS system's automatic battery test schedule. Tests are scheduled Weekly, Biweekly, At Turn On, Never, and Unknown.

Battery Information ViewAccess: From the Icon Subviews menu for the PowerNet_App Application icon, select Battery Information .

This view provides the following information on the condition of the battery in the UPS:

Replace IndicatorIndicates whether the UPS batteries need replacing.

Run Time RemainingThe UPS battery run time remaining before battery exhaustion.

Battery Pack CountThe number of external battery packs connected to the UPS.

Last Replace DateThe date when the UPS systems batteries were last replaced, in mm/dd/yy format. For Smart-UPS models, this value is originally set in the factory. When the UPS batteries are replaced, this value should be reset by the administrator.

StatusThe status of the UPS batteries. A value of Low indicates the UPS will be unable to sustain the current load, and its services will be lost if power is not restored.

Firmware RevisionThe firmware revision of the UPS system's microprocessor.

Date of ManufactureThe date when the UPS was manufactured, in mm/dd/yy format.

Serial NumberAn 8-character string identifying the serial number of the UPS internal microprocessor. This number is set at the factory. This number does NOT correspond to the serial number on the rear of the UPS.

Fail CauseThe reason for the occurrence of the last transfer to UPS battery power. Possible values are described in Table 4.

The line failure is caused by a rate of change of input voltage less than ten volts per cycle.

Self Test The UPS was commanded to do a self test.

Shutdown TypeThis field determines the nature of the action to be taken at the time when the countdown of Shutdown After DelayShutdown After DelayShutdown After DelayShutdown After Delay reaches zero. Setting this field to Output indicates that shutdown requests should cause only the output of the UPS to turn off. Setting this field to System indicates that shutdown requests will cause the entire UPS system to turn off.

Auto RestartSetting this object to On will cause the UPS system to restart after a shutdown if the shutdown occurred during a power loss as a result of either a Shutdown After Delay or an internal battery depleted condition. Setting this object to Off will prevent the UPS system from restarting after a shutdown until an operator restarts it. If the UPS is in a startup or reboot countdown, then the UPS will not restart until that delay has been satisfied.

Shutdown After DelaySetting this field will shutdown (i.e., turn off) either the UPS output or the UPS system (as determined by the value of Shutdown Type Shutdown Type Shutdown Type Shutdown Type at the time of shutdown) after the indicated number of seconds, or less if the UPS batteries become depleted. Setting this field to 0 will cause the shutdown to occur immediately. Setting this object to -1 will abort the countdown. If the system is already in the desired state at the time the countdown reaches 0, then nothing will happen. That is, there is no additional action at that time if Shutdown Type equals System and the system is already off. Similarly, there is no additional action at that time if Shutdown Type equals Output and the output is already off. When read, this value will return the number of seconds remaining until shutdown, or -1 if no shutdown countdown is in effect. On some systems, if the agent is restarted while a shutdown countdown is in effect, the countdown may be aborted.

This view contains a table of alarm entries. The table contains zero, one, or many rows at any moment, depending upon the number of alarm conditions in effect. The table is initially empty at agent startup. The agent creates a row in the table each time a condition is detected and deletes that row when that condition no longer pertains. The agent creates the first row with Alarm IDAlarm IDAlarm IDAlarm ID equal to 1, and increments the value of Alarm IDAlarm IDAlarm IDAlarm ID each time a new row is created, wrapping to the first free value greater than or equal to 1 when the maximum value of Alarm IDAlarm IDAlarm IDAlarm ID would otherwise be exceeded. Consequently, after multiple operations, the table may become sparse, e.g., containing entries for rows 95, 100, 101, and 203 and the entries should not be assumed to be in chronological order because Alarm IDAlarm IDAlarm IDAlarm ID might have wrapped.

This table contains the following information:

Alarms PresentThe present number of active alarm conditions.

Alarm IDA unique identifier for an alarm condition. This value must remain constant.

DescriptionA reference to an alarm description. The item referenced should not be accessible, but rather it should be used to provide a unique description of the alarm condition.

TimeThe time when the alarm condition was detected.

Battery Information ViewAccess: From the Icon Subviews menu for the ApcNet_App Application icon, select Battery Information .

This view contains the following information:

StatusThe indication of the capacity remaining in the UPS’ batteries.

Seconds On BatteryIf the unit is on battery power, the elapsed time since the UPS last switched to battery power, or the time since the network management subsystem was last restarted, whichever is less. A value of zero will be returned if the unit is not on battery power.

Performance Views

This section provides brief descriptions of the Performance views available for the American Power Conversion UPS devices in SPECTRUM.

Performance views display performance statistics in terms of a set of transmission attributes, e.g., cell rates, frame rates, % error, etc. A typical view is shown in Figure 6. The instantaneous condition of each transmission attribute is recorded in a graph. The statistical information for each attribute is presented in the adjacent table.

Generally, you determine performance at the device level through Performance views accessed from the Device and Application icons. You determine performance at the port/interface level through Performance views accessed from Interface icons.

For more information on Performance views, refer to the SPECTRUM Views documentation.

The following paragraphs list the performance attributes displayed for each Performance view supported by this management module.

establish redundancy for the model. Fields and column headings within the Device Configuration view and its subviews are explained in detail in SPECTRUM Views.

Redundancy and Model Reconfiguration Options View Access: From the Device Configuration view, click on the Redundancy and Reconfiguration Options button.

This view allows you to enable redundant addresses, have SPECTRUM notify you of a redundancy update, and reconfigure aspects of your network connections.

This view provides the following information:

Redundancy Administrative StatusSetting this button to Enabled will cause SPECTRUM to display a redundant address from the Redundant Preferred Address list when the primary address is not accessible.

Automatically Reconfigure InterfacesSetting this button to True will cause SPECTRUM to monitor the number of interfaces for this device. If a change is detected by SPECTRUM, the interfaces displayed in SPECTRUM will be updated to reflect the change.

Reconfigure due to LINK UP/Down eventsSetting this button to True will cause SPECTRUM to verify the interfaces displayed when a LINK UP or LINK DOWN event is received.

Device Discovery after ReconfigurationSetting this button to True will cause SPECTRUM to verify the interfaces displayed after a model reconfiguration occurs.

Generate Redundancy AlarmsSetting this button to True will cause SPECTRUM to generate an alarm when a redundant address has been selected.

Create Sub InterfacesSetting this button to True will cause SPECTRUM to display sub-interfaces in the DevTop view when RFC1573 is supported by the device.

Topologically Relocate the ModelSetting this button to True will cause SPECTRUM to relocate the model for this device to a different topological location as part of AutoDiscovery.

IP Address/Network MaskThis window provides a list of the user-defined names and IP addresses for the interface.

Queue LengthThe length of the outbound packet queue, in packets.

Advanced Configuration ViewAccess: From the Icon Subviews menu for the PowerNet_App Application icon, select Advanced Configuration .

This view contains the Configurable APC Variables Table and also the following information:

Output VoltageThe nominal output voltage from the UPS in VAC. Possible values are: 100 , 120 , 208 , 220 , 225 , 230 and 240 .

For these adjustable units, if a value other than a supported value is provided in a set request, the UPS interprets it as the next lower acceptable value. If the provided value is lower than the lowest acceptable value, the lowest acceptable value is used.

High Transfer VoltThe maximum line voltage in VAC allowed before the UPS system transfers to battery backup.

Allowed values depend on the UPS used: 100 volt units allow settings of 108 , 110 , 112 , and 114 . 120 volt units allow settings of 129 , 132 , 135 , and 138 . 208 volt units allow settings of 224 , 229 , 234 , and 239 . 230 volt units allow settings of 253 , 264 , 271 , and 280 .

Matrix units configured for 208V input allow settings of 240 , 244 , 248 , and 252 . Matrix units configured for 240V input allow settings of 276 , 264 , 253 , and 282 .

Low Transfer VoltThe minimum line voltage in VAC allowed before the UPS system transfers to battery backup.

Allowable values depend on the UPS used: 100 volt units allow settings of 81, 83, 85, 87. 120 volt units allow settings of 97, 100 , 103 , 106 . 208 volt units allow settings of 168 , 172 , 177 , 182 . 230 volt units allow settings of 188 , 196 , 204 , 208 .

Matrix units configured for 208V input have a fixed low transfer voltage of 156 volts. Matrix units configured for 240V input have a fixed low transfer voltage of 180 volts.

AlarmA flag indicating how the UPS should handle audible line fail alarms. Valid values are: timed , atLowBattery , and never .

Alarm Timer (sec)The time after initial line failure at which the UPS begins emitting audible alarms (beeping). This timer is observed only if the value of extControlAlarm is timed. Allowed values are 0 or 30 seconds.

value is lower than the lowest acceptable value, the lowest acceptable value is used.

Min Return CapacityThe minimum battery capacity required before the UPS will return from a low battery shutdown condition. The capacity is measured from 0% battery capacity (or Low Battery) as a percent of full capacity (100%). In other words, the UPS will not re-energize the output until the battery has charged so that its capacity is equal to this value. Allowed values are: 0, 10 , 25, or 90 percent.

If a value other than a supported value is provided in a set request, the UPS interprets the value as the next higher acceptable value. If the provided value is higher than the highest acceptable value, the highest acceptable value (90%) is used.

SensitivityThe sensitivity of the UPS to utility line abnormalities or noises. Valid values are: auto , low , medium, and high .

Low Battery Run TimeThe desired run time of the UPS, in seconds, once the low battery condition is reached. Allowed values are; 120 , 300 , 420 , or 600 seconds. During this time the UPS will produce a constant warning tone which can not be disabled.

Shutoff Delay (sec)The delay in seconds the UPS remains on after being told to turn off. Allowed values are: 20, 180 , 300 , and 600 seconds.

If a value other than a supported value is provided in a set request, the UPS interprets it as the next higher acceptable value. If the provided value is higher than the highest acceptable value, the highest acceptable value is used.

Sleep TimeThe time in seconds for the UPS to go to ’sleep’ when instructed. When in sleep mode, the UPS will not provide output power regardless of the input line state. Once the specified time has elapsed, output power will be restored.

This is a configuration setting. The UPS will not go to sleep until told to do so by the manager from a management station.

Any input value is allowed, however the UPS only recognizes 1/10 of an hour increments. The provided value will be rounded to the closest 1/10

of an hour with one exception: Any value entered between 1 and 540 seconds will be rounded to 360 seconds (or 6 minutes).

Set EEPROM DefaultsWRITE: Resets the UPS EEPROM variables to default values. READ: returns 0.

Return Delay (sec)The delay in seconds after utility line power returns before the UPS will turn on. This value is also used when the UPS comes out of a reboot and before the UPS wakes up from ’sleep’ mode. Allowed values are: 0, 60 , 180 and 300 seconds.

Configurable APC Variables TableThis table lists the allowed values for all discrete configurable UPS variables and provides the following information:

IndexThe index to an EEPROM field entry.

Number of DevicesThe number of devices that are plugged into the UPS.

IndexThe index of the device that is plugged into the UPS.

Device NameThe name/description of the device plugged into the UPS.

VA RatingThe volt-amp rating of the device plugged into the UPS.

Accept This DeviceIf an entry is to be added, then this value is Yes, if the entry is to be deleted, the value is No.

Manager Configuration ViewAccess: From the Icon Subviews menu for the PowerNet_App Application icon, select Manager Configuration .

This view contains the following information:

Trap ReceiversThe number of managers to which traps are sent.

BOOTP EnabledA value of Yes indicates that configuration parameters are obtained from a BOOTP server. A value of No indicates configuration parameters were saved in EEPROM, which were originally configured at local console.

TFTP Server IPThe IP address of the TFTP server. If BOOTP Enabled is Yes, then this IP address is provided by a BOOTP server and is not allowed to be modified. Before using TFTP to load new code image, the image file should be placed in the proper directory on the specified TFTP server.
