Asa Glascock Trading Post CollectionAsa Glascock (1898-1965) a native of Ralls County, Missouri, owned and operated a successful trading post in Gallup, New Mexico, from about 1922 to 1957. He and his wife also managed a post in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, for several years during the mid- 1950s.

Prior to becoming a trader, Glascock worked for the transcontinental railway, which bisects Route 66 in Gallup. While working there Glascock severely injured his dominant hand. He changed careers and became a trader who spoke fluent Navajo.

Asa’s wife, Margaret Smith Glascock, (1924-2002) helped him run the store. The post sold Pendleton and Navajo blankets, pawn jewelry, Czechoslovakian glass beads, groceries, and the usual household goods. For tender the Glascocks used their distinctive aluminum store tokens stamped with their name and the denomination.

One original item however, surpassed all others: the beaded leather belts. The Zuni Indians purchased the colorful Czeck beads by the “whiskey shot glass.” After loom-beading vibrant strips in the requisite length, they returned the finished strips to the post, where Margaret Glascock and some local women machine-stitched the vibrant strips to commercially made leather belts. Her sons often helped her with the final step of lacing white plastic around the edges. The Glascocks sold the profitable belts to the National Park Service, as well as to dealers across the country. When the Japanese began imitating the belts, their orders dwindled.

In 1957 the Glascocks sold their post and returned to a farm in Missouri. David Williamson to Meyn February 13, 2015 and Mary Tate Engels, ed. Tales from Wide Ruins, p. 192

238 Henry Chee Dodge’s (Navajo, 1857?-1947) Turquois and Coral Necklace lot of 3, includes a stunning necklace strung with 36 mound-shaped, graduated turquoise tabs and 36 coral branches, length 34 in., largest tab length 1.5 in.; PLUS a photo postcard of Dodge taken by Ben Wittick in 1884, 4.5 x 6.5 in. ; AND a hand-tinted silver gelatin photograph of an older Dodge wearing the necklace described above, 8 x 10 in. first quarter 20th century

Henry Chee Dodge (Navajo, 1857?–1947) was a prestigious political leader and businessman. While still a boy, Dodge was orphaned, adopted by a Navajo family, and accompanied them on the Long Walk to Fort Sumner (1864-1866) where the Navajo were incarcerated. In 1868, he returned to Fort Defiance and learned to speak, read, and write English fluently.

Dodge quickly became known as a reliable interpreter for both the federal government and the Navajo. The Indians accepted and respected him because he lived as a traditional Navajo. He traveled frequently to meet the Great Father in Washington and helped mediate the resolution of potentially explosive conflicts. From 1942-1946 he served as tribal chairman for the Navajo Nation, lobbying for better education and helping the people transition into the contemporary era. (Steve Pavlik, “Henry Chee Dodge” in Encyclopedia of North American Indians, 1996, Frederick E. Hoxie, ed. p.165-167).

Artist Statement: During the summer months in New Mexico it can get pretty hot, and just before Santa Fe Indian Market, it can get pretty hot in a whole different way. For many years now, this time of year is extremely hectic, trying to get ready for the market shows, having our Pueblo Feast Day the weekend before, and harvests from the gardens ready to deal with. This piece came out of this time of year: a reaction to the constraints of schedules and precision. This little figure pours and drinks with abandonment, letting it run wherever it wants to go: a reminder of our choices of liberation or not.

408 Wyandot Pipe Tomahawk Collected by Emil Schlup (1854-1935) from the Battle of Sandusky small tapering wooden handle coated with red pigment and embellished with lead inlay at end; blade with classic form and small cylindrical bowl; teardrop-shaped eye; steel plug, width of blade 2 in. x overall length 11.5 in. early 19th century

Emil Schlup (1854-1935) was a farmer by occupation, but his passion was for history. In an article by historian Parker Brown, Brown notes: “historians can produce the fruit of their genius only with the aid of a host of unseen, unsung workers. These “helpers of historians” … like Emil Schlup – ‘procure the raw materials and do the preliminary rough work on them… so they may be used” (Brown, 1988: 112-113). This was the legacy Schlup left. As a first generation Ohioan of Wyandot County, he was an author of local history, published in the Ohio State Archaeological and Historical Society, and a guide of the area to visiting historians. Because of his family’s homestead location (built around 1845 and located just south of the Colonel Crawford Burn Site Monument), Schlup’s interest focused on the capture and burning of Colonel William Crawford after the 1782 Battle of Sandusky.

In March 1782, Pennsylvania militia tortured and massacred around 100 people living in the Lanape Moravian Missionary Village at Gnadenhutten. The village was situated in an unfortunate location between American colonists and the British and their Native allies. In addition, the group was wrongly blamed for the capture and deaths of several Pennsylvanians, which sparked the conflict. In May of 1782,

Colonel William Crawford along with Captain David Williamson, who lead the attack on the Lanape village, assembled Pennsylvania and Virginia militia and headed west, with the intention to destroy the Wyandot, Munsee, and Delaware living along the Sandusky River. These groups aided by the British, defeated Crawford and Williamson in the two- day Battle of Sandusky. Crawford was captured, tortured, and burned to death by the Wyandot.

As Schlup explored the battlefield and surrounding areas, he found artifacts which helped him assemble specific details of the conflict. This tomahawk was one of the relics found along the Detroit trail (Brown, 1988:110). In correspondence found between Schlup and historian and author William Connelley (1855-1930), Schlup describes the Indian trail to Detroit as still there well defined, hacked and barked trees bullet marks in old decayed trees, etc, showed plainly that it had been an indian haunt [sic.] (Brown, 1985:60).

148 COWAN’S AMERICAN INDIAN AND WESTERN ART BID LIVE ONLINE AT BIDSQUARE.COM

Terms and ConditionsBy registering and bidding in an auction conducted by Cowan’s Auctions, Inc. (“Cowan’s”), bidders (whether present in person, by telephone, by agent, by written or telephone absentee bid instruction, or through a live internet connection) agree to be bound by these terms. These are the complete and only terms and conditions on which all property is offered for sale. Cowan’s retains the right to bar any bidder from participating in any auction and to exclude or reject any bid.1) REGISTRATION. All bidders must register their name, permanent street address (no P.O. Boxes), and telephone number prior to the auction. Unless known to Cowan’s, all registrants are required to present two forms of identification, at least one of which must include a current photograph. Bidders may be required to present a valid Visa or MasterCard. By registering with Cowan’s or submitting an absentee bid form, an individual registrant authorizes Cowan’s to obtain a copy of his or her consumer credit report and authorizes Cowan’s, at its sole discretion, to use the information contained therein to make business decisions regarding the registrant’s participation in the bidding process.2) ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS. Bidding on any item, whether in person, by phone, by absentee bid or via a live internet auction indicates the bidder’s agreement to be bound by these Terms and Conditions for Bidders. Any right of bidder under this agreement shall not be assignable and shall only be enforceable by the original buyer. The rights and obligations of the parties shall be governed by the laws of the state of Ohio. All bidders submit to the personal jurisdiction of the state and federal courts in Ohio.3) TERMS OF SALE. Announcements made the day of auction take precedence over any previous communication. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot at any time before its final sale and to reject any bid for any reason. The highest bidder for each lot acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the “buyer”. If any dispute arises as to any bidding, or between two or more bidders, at the sole discretion of the auctioneer, the successful bidder will be determined or the disputed lot shall be put up again at the last undisputed bid and resold.4) BUYER’S PREMIUM. (a) Buyer’s Premium for “Antique and Modern Firearms” auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 17.5% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (b) Buyer’s Premium for “Fine and Decorative Art”, “Modern Ceramics”, “American Indian and Western Art”, “American History”, “Fine Jewelry and Timepieces” , “World at War” and any other specialized auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 20% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (c) Buyer’s Premium for online, timed and other third-party bidding platforms may vary. 5) ESTIMATES AND RESERVES. Presale estimates are intended to be guides and may or may not reflect the ultimate hammer price of a lot. Cowan’s retains the right to change estimates on any lot up to time of sale. A reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the seller of the lot and Cowan’s. In the case of reserved lots, the seller has authorized Cowan’s to bid on seller’s behalf until the reserve price is reached. In no case will the reserve be higher than the low presale estimate. Cowan’s standard house reserve on all property at auction is one-half of the low estimate.6) WARRANTIES AND DISCLAIMERS. Cowan’s makes a limited warranty only to the original buyer of record concerning the authenticity of each lot for a period of 14 days after bidder’s receipt of the purchased lot. If a buyer is not satisfied that the lot purchased is genuine, the buyer may, at his or her own expense, obtain the opinion of two mutually agreed upon recognized experts in the field of the disputed lot. If these experts determine that the item is not genuine, the buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the rescission of the sale and refund of the amount paid for the item. It is specifically understood and agreed that the rescission of the sale and refund is exclusive and in lieu of any other remedy which might otherwise be available as a matter of law or in equity, and such remedy is conditioned upon the buyer returning the property in the same condition as at the time of sale. Cowan’s shall not be liable for any incidental or consequential damages. All sales are final, with no returns or refunds except as provided in this limited warranty.Except as provided in the immediately proceeding paragraph, EVERY LOT IS SOLD “AS IS”, without any representations or warranties by Cowan’s or the seller as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, condition or value of the property, or the correctness or completeness of the catalogue or other description of the property, and no statement, whether written or oral, shall be deemed such a representation, warranty or assumption of liability. Cowan’s makes no representation or warranty that the buyer of manuscript material, photographs, prints or works of art will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights. Cowan’s does not guarantee the working order of any clock, watch, electronic or mechanical device. If you are purchasing items that contain these materials, you need to check the government wildlife import requirements in the countries from which and to which the item is being shipped prior to bidding. Purchasers are responsible for making timely payments on items won at auction, even if a license is delayed or denied.17) SHIPPING CHARGES. Buyers are required to pay for all packing, shipping and insurance charges. Overseas duty charges are the responsibility of the successful bidder.
