Thanksgiving is celebrated thismonth. Turkey is the main foodconsumed on this day. Below areseveral interesting and informativefacts about the turkey.

• On average, Americans eatmore than 16 pounds of turkeyannually.

• The largest turkey on recordwas 86 pounds.

• A male turkey is a tom, a femaleis a hen and a newborn isa poult.

• The average mature turkey hasabout 3,500 feathers.

• A turkey egg takes 28 daysto hatch.

• 675 million pounds of turkey willbe eaten this comingThanksgiving in the UnitedStates.

• The main farmers of turkey areMinnesota, North Carolina,Arkansas, Virginia andCalifornia.

• Turkeys see in color.• Every year, the president of

the United States pardons aturkey for the Thanksgivingholiday.

• Turkey is a great source ofprotein—30 grams per 3.5ounces of cooked turkey.

Army vs. Navy:America’s Game

The annual Army-Navy footballgame, known as “America’s Game,”kicked off as a simple challenge backin the late 1800s, but remains todayas one of the greatest rivalriesin sports.

The first gridiron matchup betweenthe Army Black Knights of theU.S. Military Academy at West Point,N.Y., and the Navy Midshipmen of theU.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis,Md., took place Nov. 29, 1890, afterNavy issued a challenge to Army’snewly formed football team. Navy wonthat first meeting with a score of 24–0.

Except for a few occasions, the twoservice academies have squared offannually since 1899, traditionally onthe second Saturday in December.Because crowds for the game are solarge, the game is held at a neutralhost stadium, most often inPhiladelphia, and televised nationally.

Along with the intense rivalry, thegame is known for its traditions, suchas the pre-game March On, where theArmy’s Corps of Cadets and theNavy’s Brigade of Midshipmen, all infull dress uniform, march in formationacross the field to take their seats. Atthe game’s end, as a sign of solidarity,both teams stand together as eachsings its alma mater to the fans inthe stands.

A Talk-Line expertasked a caller whatstate her turkey wasin, meaning howthawed it was.The caller replied,“Florida.”

After finding aturkey from 1969 inhis father’s freezer,a man phoned inrequesting tips onhow to cook the30-year-old bird.
