A Guide toGouache Painting

If you dabble in watercolors oracrylic paints, you can enjoythe best of both worlds withgouache painting.

Pronounced “gwash,” this type ofpaint dates back to the Middle Agesand was first used to createilluminated manuscripts. Later, itbecame a popular medium forcommercial artists and illustrators.

Used much like watercolor paints,gouache is sometimes given thesimplified description “opaquewatercolors.” Unlike watercolors,however, gouache has a heavier

texture and bolder colors, since it isless transparent. The paint alsoallows the artist to create moredetailed works.

Gouache dries much morequickly than watercolors, acrylicsand oil paints, but it also can berewetted, both on the palette andpainting surface, to be reworked—even years after the paint was firstapplied. This versatility makes themedium a popular choice fornovice artists.

For best results, water is addedto concentrated gouache paint toachieve a creamy consistency, thenbrushed on the paper, canvas orillustration board in layers, allowingeach layer to dry betweenapplications. A finished gouachepainting has a matte finish unless avarnish or other sealer is applied.

week, a person needs to burn an extra500 calories per day. Once you havelost the unwanted pounds, here aresome interesting facts regardingindividuals who have lost 30 or morepounds and kept the weight off.

color, the super food more thanmakes up for it with health benefitsand versatility.

Cauliflower is a member of thecruciferous family of vegetables,which includes broccoli, cabbage andkale. But unlike those green crops,cauliflower’s heavy leaves cover itshead (called a curd) as it grows,blocking out sunlight and preventingthe production of chlorophyll, thepigment that gives plants their greencolor. Cultivated in Asia and theMediterranean more than 2,000 yearsago, cauliflower was first grown inNorth America in the late 1600s.

Cauliflower is low-calorie andpacked with fiber, folate, vitamins Cand K and other antioxidants. Thesenutrients have been shown to boostbrain and heart health and helpfight disease.

Its florets, stems and leaves can beeaten raw or cooked in any number ofways. Because of its compatible colorand texture, cauliflower is sometimesused as a low-calorie substitute inpotato and rice dishes and evenpizza crust.
