Cigarette Smoking Connected to Hearing LossCigarette smoking is a well-known risk factor for chronic diseases, and it’s a
lifestyle choice that may be a factor in hearing loss later in life.A study indicated that current smokers were 1.69 times as likely to have a
hearing loss as nonsmokers, and that nonsmoking participants who lived with asmoker were more likely to have a hearing loss than those who werenot exposed.
The smoking and hearing loss relationship remained statistically significant inparticipants with both a history of occupational noise exposure and thosewithout. Participants in the highest exposure category were 1.27 times as likelyto have a hearing loss as those who were exposed to fewer than 10 packs ofcigarettes per year. Come see us in the library on May 17 at 1:00 p.m. DebbieHale, M.A., CCC-A & Jesse Lynch, B.A. Audicare Hearing Center.
