Dean’s Column Larry Wheelock
As the lazy days of summer wind down, many of us who deal with choirs will be engaging in start-up in the next couple of weeks (unless you’ve started already) and congregations and schools will resume their Fall activities in earnest. Some of us are putting the final details on planning and some are already deeply engaged in bringing the best we have to offer to our congregations, choirs and students. In the midst of all this activity, who has time for an AGO Chapter meeting? Why should we care?
It is easy to limit your contact with the AGO to reading PipeNotes and a monthly perusal of TAO, and both of those are useful benefits to your membership, but if you are limiting yourself to that you are depriving yourself of one of the principal benefits of membership; the opportunity to meet and interact with your colleagues. We meet to learn, sometimes in events like our very successful workshops in July and August this year. We meet to teach, as we will do with our upcoming Pedals, Pipes & Pizza (PPP) program and our participation in the Regional Competition for Young Organists (RCYO.) We meet to enjoy and be inspired, as we will do with some wonderful upcoming recitals. But equally important, we meet to encourage and support one another in our various callings.
On Sunday, September 14 at 2:15 we will meet to install our newly-elected officers, to pledge our support and to encourage their leadership in the upcoming year. We will meet to remind ourselves of why we chose to organize ourselves into a guild. We will meet to give honor to one of our own who has gained national recognition. We will meet to affirm to one another that our association and the collegiality which binds us as a chapter can also serve to strengthen each of us in our individual calling. We will meet to share a late-summer outing on the lawn as the music of the carillon wafts across the Marquette campus. Do not let this last gasp of summer and this first opportunity of a fresh new season pass you by. I look forward to seeing and greeting you there.
NOTE: The chapter has an ever-growing music library of donated scores which will be available in the parking lot (our own version of a tailgate party.) Browse through them and take what you want or need and give a donation to the chapter. Everybody wins — and you can tell your friends you were tailgating with the AGO.
