AMERICAN ADVERTISING AWARDS GALA

PROM NIGHT 2017

The American Advertising Awards program is the advertising industry’s largest and most representative creative competition, recognizing creative excellence in the art of advertising.

Sponsored by the AAF, the American Advertising Awards competition represents the broadest creative spirit of advertising by recognizing all forms of advertising; in all varieties of media; created by all sizes and types of entrants; and from all over the country. Nationally, more than 40,000 total entries are entered and judged annually. Over 150 entries were entered and judged in Montgomery. Here are the best of the best.

TOM COCKESVP, GROUP CREATIVE PARTNER THE BUNTIN GROUP, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE

Tom wrote his first ad in college while majoring in Architectural History. It was an attempt to solicit an audience for his thesis on the influence of Palladian architecture in America. Nobody showed. So after college, instead of becoming an architect, Tom went to the Portfolio Center in Atlanta to learn how to write better ads. From there, he found his way to Tracy Locke Atlanta, BBDO Atlanta, The Buntin Group Nashville, Wray Ward Charlotte and finally back to The Buntin Group. Tom is now a Creative Director with nearly three decades under his belt. He has worked on huge accounts like Delta Air Lines and tiny accounts like well … stuff you’ve never heard of. The One Show, CA, the Clios, OBIEs, EMMYs, Jay Chiat Awards and the ADDYs have all been kind enough to feature his work. Tom has judged the Effies, National Student ADDYs and many local AAF clubs competitions. But what he is most proud of is a certain A- in 401 Senior Thesis Architectural History that nobody really knows about.

Chris OConnor is a Partner at Liquid 9 and is responsible for the sales and business aspects of the company. His day-to-day responsibilities include management of the employees, sales and bids, overseeing all client relationships, and the financial health of the company. With fifteen years of experience managing large teams (often numbering in the thousands) for both Sprint and DirecTV, Chris serves as Executive Producer and sometimes Director for Liquid 9.

TAMMY C. SMITHSENIOR LIAISON, PRINT PRODUCTION ALSAC/ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

Currently, Tammy serves the life-saving mission of ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis as Senior Liaison, Print Production. Previously, she was VP/Production at Maris, West & Baker Advertising in Jackson, Mississippi, where she had worked for 18 years. In 2006, Tammy was honored by the American Advertising Federation as Division IV National President and Club of the Year, and received the Silver Medal Award from AAF Jackson in 2008. She founded Production Services Association (PSA) in 2000, which supports advertising print production specialists in Jackson. Away from work, Tammy is an avid amateur photographer and feeds her wanderlust whenever possible.

Known as “The King of the Blues,” Riley “B.B.” King (1925-2015) made his way from the cotton fields of Mississippi to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, broadening the audience for blues music and inspiring people all over the world with his talent, charisma and wisdom.

John Lewis (1940-present) is a master of moving forward. As a civil rights activist and member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, he was a central figure in the Freedom Rides, the Selma-to-Montgomery marches and the March on Washington. As a congressman, he’s been re-elected 14 times and continues to advocate tirelessly for his constituents and for anyone who is oppressed.
