ABOUT THIS RECITAL

Walt Whitman exclaimed, “I hear America singing…” On the 15th anniversary of the horror and heroism of 9/11/01, we recognize and celebrate American spirit and heritage through song. We think of grit—determination, endurance and fortitude in midst of bereavement, greed, hardship, lust and war. And we ponder glory—anticipation of, upward look for, God’s intervention here and His eventual deliverance of those having true faith in Him. The poetry in this evening’s musical settings represents wide diversity spanning several centu-ries. New Yorker Langston Hughes, descendant of slaves and slave owners, composed poetry across

a vast range of emotion. Texan rancher-poet Robert Lee Brothers wrote realistic poetry laced with much imagination. World War I British soldier-poet Siegfried Sas-soon wrote insightfully of that war. Welsh-born poet George Herbert authored spiritual poetry with ex-ceptional insight and imagination. Perceptive anonymous poets also contribute importantly. Composers of music include several who had significant asso-ciations of residence and influence with New York City, including Ricky Ian Gordon, Harry T. Burleigh and Aaron Copland. Gordon’s art songs encompass a remarkable vari-ety of styles; Burleigh’s spiritual

arrangements support sensitively their emotional, spiritual texts; Copland’s song arrangements bring effective simplicity to their words. Two song cycles are included. The composer of the first, the late Texan Robert A. Reid, was the father of Charles Reid. “Exiles from Eden” reflects in its music a wide range of human experience and imag-ination in Brothers’ poetry. The composer of the second song cycle is Kenneth Logan. “Three Herbert Songs” closely follows highly-var-ied spiritual images evoked in the centuries-old, yet fresh, words of Herbert.
