AMERICAN LEGION POST 113 OCTOBER 2019 A Message from the Commander Leroy “Buster” Furman October is here and the activities at Post 113 will be picking up. The renovation in the Post is almost completed. I would be remiss if I did not recognize the effort put forth by several of the members to see to the quality of the work being done. THIS IS YOUR POST. If you have not taken the opportunity to visit the post and see what has been done, you should. The lounge, the dining room, the hallways and the restrooms have been upgraded or renovated. Plans are in place as well as being developed to assure that the work will be completed before November 11 th in order to celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the American Legion and be able to again commemorate Veterans Day. Invitations are going to be sent to other Veterans organizations and many other Government and business organizations to attend. We will have a guest speaker and a full Post 113 service. More information will be coming out from other committee members in this issue or by other means about these joint events. Many other coming events and activities will be further discussed in following articles or other memorandums. God bless you, your families, our troops and first responders wherever they may be and God Bless the USA. October is here and the activities at Post 113 will be picking up. The renovation in the

Post is almost completed. I would be remiss if I did not recognize the effort put forth by

MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAPLIAN--PHILLIP KOLBE

Dear Veteran,

The AT EASE program is the first Tuesday of every month at 6pm

if you just need someone to talk to.

We are saddened to learn of Don Aldrich (with the Honor Guard)

and Chris Fair, have passed away last month. Our prayers are

with their families. Thank you for your service brothers. Please

keep Dottie Thomas also in your prayers for a fast recovery.

House Manager - Tina Brown Thank you so much, to all of the volunteers who put in countless hours day after day, cooking, cleaning and painting the Post! It truly was a labor of love! We will be having an appreciation dinner soon for all to enjoy. Thank you also to our members and guests, for being patient with us during our renovations. We are now reopen and ready to forge ahead into fall. There is something for everyone, we have new music and entertain-ment, fun shows, and activities planned this year. We have also saved room for spontaneous events. Our back hall is ready to rent. Do you have parties or get-togethers planned, and have too many guests for you home? Does your HOA or business need a place to meet? Our back hall is ready to rent! The hall holds approximately 200 guests, with a full kitchen, tables and chairs, and sound system included. We are conveniently located in the heart of Rotonda not too far from anywhere. Please call the Post for further details. Our 100 year centennial celebration is coming up soon. We will celebrate on Veterans Day November 11th with the ceremony starting at 11 sharp. We would love for all members and guests to be present as this will be a huge event for us. The Englewood Chamber of Commerce, The Englewood Area Board of Realtors, and the Lemon Bay Rotary Club are joint sponsors of this event this year....New Years Eve is planned and tickets are available. If you know a veteran in need, we would like to help,

please contact the office. Be kind to one another, and enjoy life's journey!

Thank you to all who worked many hours on the renovations of

your Post. The SONS graciously donated $1175 towards these

efforts. We continue to have Texas Hold’em on Wednesdays

from 5 pm-9 pm. If you would like to help out, contact me at

[email protected]. The SONS meeting resume the second

Thursday of the month at 5:30pm.

Hello Fellow Legionnaires ,

Well summer is final over and the new membership years has begun. Memberships have been coming in at a steady

pace, but if you haven’t renewed for 2020 please do so at your earliest opportunity.

NOW FOR SOME REALLY, REALLY GOOD NEWS.

July 30th 2019 President Trump signed in to law the Legion Act. This law effectively changes the eligibility

time frames for membership from (7) seven to (2) two.—April 16 1917 - November 11 1918——December 7

1941 - to a time later determined by the Federal Government. The membership requirement is now:

ANYONE WHO SERVED AT LEAST (1) DAY OF MILITARY DUTY SINCE DEC. 7TH 1941 WITH AN

HONORABLE DISCHARGE IS ELEGIBLE TO JOIN THE AMERICAN LEGION. THIS ALSO EFFECTS THEIR

SPOUCES, DAUGHTERS, AND SONS. Female Veterans spouses can now become members of the of

the American Legion Auxiliary.

Starting in September thru the end of the year the American Legion Post 113 will accept NEW MEMBERS at

the reduced rate of $35.00. After the first year the dues will return to the normal rate of $55.00.

As per Post Policy any Veteran retuning from active duty from the PERSIAN GULF CONFLICT to date will be

given their 1st year of Membership free. After the first year the dues will return to the normal rate of $55.00.

We do not have all of the new forms yet. We are improvising as we go. If anyone you know that was

previously ineligible please tell them the GOOD NEWS.

Legion Auxiliary now open to male spouses of U.S. veteran and service members. We are planning a social

after our next general meeting on October 9. Please come and join the meeting and the party, and if you are so

inclined, bring a dessert, or cheese and crackers, or Hors d’oeuvre…

Unit 113 Rotonda West will be hosting a District 8 ABC Class (Auxiliary Basic Concepts) October 12, 2019 at

10:00 AM. The instructor will be Michelle DeGennero. Please come and welcome members from other units in Dis-

trict 8 to unit 113.

Unit 113 Upcoming Events and Meetings: Ways & Means committee Meeting October 2, 2019 (11:30 AM).

Auxiliary Executive Board Meeting October 9, 2019 (6:00 PM). Auxiliary general meeting and social October 9, 2019

(7:00 PM). District 8 ABC Class October 12, 2019 (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM). Holiday Bazaar/Arts & Crafts Sale October

19, 2019. Department Fall Conference, Orlando November 1 – 3/ 2019 Other Upcoming District 8 Events:

10/19/2019 District 8 Picnic Arcadia Unit 11 (12 PM to 3 PM)

Auxiliary members have spent the last three weeks working very hard helping remodel the inside of your Post.

Both bathrooms have been painted and the fixtures are all new. Members also helped with painting the walls and trim

in the lounge and the banquet room. The windows have all been cleaned and there are brand new curtains. All the

tables (oh, the gum) and chairs have been washed and are ready to go. This labor of love has caused a lot of sore

backs and aching muscles but the results are amazing. There are still finishing touches to be completed but stop in

and see our handiwork.
