In 2012, Jordan Spieth was a standout collegiate golfer at the University of Texas, leading a talented Longhorns team to a No. 1 national ranking. What a

treat it was for resort guests and local golf enthusiasts to watch the future No. 1 player in the world and Masters winner play at that year’s Amer Ari Intercollegiate tournament at Waikoloa Beach Resort.

The tournament — which began in 1992 — draws some of the best collegiate teams and players in the country, and is viewed as an important part of their annual schedule.

“The Amer Ari is the first event of the new year and there is always a sense of anticipation around it,” says Casey Martin, coach of the University of Oregon golf team and former PGA Tour player. “The field is always loaded and everyone is anxious to get the spring season started in a good way. My hope for my players is that they prepare with intensity because they know what a big event is ahead of them. It is also a great reward for my players to get off the main-land and enjoy the islands for a few days.”

Georgia Tech, Auburn, USC, UCLA, and Stanford. The current No. 1 collegiate player in the country and defending individual medalist, Justin Suh, is scheduled to compete alongside his USC teammates.

EXPERIENCES THAT LAST A LIFETIMEBut the tournament is also important for host team UH Hilo, which has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Waikoloa Beach Resort.

NEWS

as full time director of golf at Waikoloa Beach Resort. “When the team competes in the Amer Ari each year, it gives them a chance to play with some of the great college players that they will be seeing on TV in the coming years and hopefully inspire them to practice, work hard, and create a good work ethic that will pay off.”

Ginoza himself played for the UH Hilo team (1994-1998), competing in the Amer Ari all four years. “For me it was not only about golf and getting better or playing with great play-ers, it was also about being a part of something bigger,” he says. “I was lucky to make contacts during those years and found a position at Waikoloa, so now I can give back a little.”

Some of the players he competed against who went on to successful careers on the PGA Tour? Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar, Paul Casey. “I played with 2009 U.S. Open cham-pion Lucas Glover at Hapuna when he was a freshman for Clemson,” he recalls.

Other top players who have competed in the Amer Ari over the years include Notah Begay, Anthony Kim, and in recent years Aaron Wise, C.T. Pan, Jon Rahm, and Cameron Tringale, all of whom have been making noise on the professional levels.

Those are experiences that last a lifetime, and without the Amer Ari Tournament being hosted at Waikoloa Beach Resort, they’d be difficult experiences for local college players to find.

For the visiting teams, it’s a different experience altogether. Coach Martin — who participated in the tournament during his college years at Stanford University — describes it like this: “The Amer Ari has a laid back feel because we are in Hawai`i and the weather is always perfect. But beneath the fun and enjoyment of the vacation feel there is a big-time golf tournament with some of the best amateur golfers in the world participating. I loved my experience back in the early 1990s. We loved coming to Hawai`i and made some lifelong memories during my times competing at Waikoloa.”

COACH EARL TAMIYAOne of the driving forces behind the Amer Ari Intercollegiate is UH Hilo head golf coached Earl Tamiya, who has led the Vulcans since 1991. Under his guidance, UH Hilo teams have won Pacific Conference Division II titles in 2005, 2008, 2011, and 2014. The 2004 squad went on to finish

fourth at the NCAA Division II national championships; and the 2005 team finished fifth.

“Waikoloa has been fantastic, they’ve been 1,000 percent supportive over the years,” says Tamiya. “From Joe Root and Dennis Rose when we put this tournament together in 1991, and especially today, even in high season when the tourna-ment takes place, we are welcomed and made to feel right at home.” Because of the strong relationship between UH Hilo and Waikoloa Beach Resort, the Amer Ari is ranked in the top five collegiate tournaments in the U.S.

Beyond his teams’ successes over the years, though, Coach Tamiya is quite fondly remembered as a warm tournament host who embodies aloha to the visiting teams and their families.

“Everyone loves Earl Tamiya, myself included,” says Oregon’s Coach Martin. “He has a warmth about him that makes him beloved. He has done a lot for college golf by hosting this pres-tigious event every year.”

Ginoza concurs. “Coach Tamiya is a great tournament host,” he says. “He projects such a warm welcome to everyone who comes. Normally there is a luau, where we offer the mainland coaches and players some of the local flavors of Hawai`i, such as Big Island Candies, Kona coffee, or even slippers. Food, Earl’s smile, and gifts always go a long way!”

The 2019 Amer Ari Intercollegiate golf tournament will take place at The Kings’ Course at Waikoloa Beach Resort on February 7-9. The host team is UH-Hilo, coached by Earl Tamiya, with 18 schools competing. The event is free and open to the public, with teams teeing off at 7:30 am each morning.

Chef Allen Hess has a passion for Hawaii’s regional food — crafting vibrant modern dishes from local fish, meats, and produce with a seasoned expertise. His newest venue with a menu, Aloha Bol, opened on Dec. 1 in the Queens' MarketPlace 'Ono Food Court.

A fast-casual restaurant, Aloha Bol spotlights the fresh local ingredients that Hess loves, along with a few surprises: Asian flavors, healthy foodie favorites, and fun, build-your-own dishes. Diners can choose a Chef’s Choice, or create a custom “bol” from their selections of a base (greens, rice, quinoa, or somen salad), vegetables, protein, sauce, and toppings.

Originally from California, Hess graduated from San Francisco’s California Culinary Academy, and traveled to renowned food destinations to cook and learn, including the Caribbean, Japan, New Orleans, and Italy. Here on Hawai`i Island, he has worked with such notable

Kuleana Rum Works has been making rum on Hawai`i Island since 2013. Having experienced great critical success with their rums, the company wanted to take their product to the public. The new Kuleana Rum Shack does just that at a location that recently opened in Queens’ MarketPlace. Conceived as a world-class bar and family restaurant, the Rum Works operation will act in collaboration with Umeke’s Restaurants, who will provide the culinary expertise.

In choosing a partner, Kuleana Rum's founders sought a company that shared their philosophy of kuleana: a restaurant

company that created food with deliberate intent and personal accountability, using the highest-quality Big Island ingredients, and that produced meals that both locals and visitors appreciated.

The choice was Umeke’s, whose Kona- and Hilo-based restaurants are renowned for their poke bowls and other local foods. Thus, when customers dine at the Kuleana Rum Shack they will savor food that people of this island have been eating in their own homes for generations while also enjoying outstanding and unique cocktails made with Kuleana Rum and other world-class spirits.

Not sure if you like rum? Come to the bar in the Kuleana Rum Shack and let their expert bar tenders educate you on this fascinating spirit by taking you through a rum tasting. After becoming completely smitten with Kuleana Rum and the amazing cocktails you can make with it, you will be able to buy bottles to take home with you in the Kuleana retail space right in the Rum Shack.

In 2015, he opened Mai Grille in the Waikoloa Kings’ Golf Course clubhouse, named for his daughter Mai, and nicknamed “Home of Bacon,” for the Hess family’s handcrafted Mai Bacon. Mai Grille has won acclaim for cuisine, service and atmosphere in its three-year history.

The team at Kuleana Rum Works is thrilled to be building a truly Big Island company by farming in Kohala, distilling in Kawaihae, serving in the Queens MarketPlace, and partnering with Umeke’s. They invite you to "come enjoy real, local food and taste the Kuleana difference in the best cocktail of your life."
