ICES LIST OF SPECIES lTEMS
(as at 31 March 1979)
by'ICES Statistician
C.M.1979/D:2Statistics Committee
"(a)
•
At the 66th Statutory Meeting it was decided (C.Res.197S/4:6) that:
the ICES List of Species Items, as described inDoc.C.M.1975/D:7 and adopted by C.Res.1976/4:11,should be updated by the Statistician, taking intoaccount some recent revisions in the FAO InternationalStandard Statistical Classification of AquaticAnimals and Plants (ISSCAAP), inclusion of seaweedsinto the Bulletin Statistique items, adoption ofthe CWP common list of North Atlantic species items(with standard abbreviations) as well as additionalfish species on which member countries are nowreporting catch statistics;
(b) due to rapid developmentsin the construction ofa world list.of marine species items, the ICESSecretariat should make thenecessary adjustments tothe agreed list of 3-Alpha abbreviations (ReferenceC. Res. 1977/1:17) and info:rm member countries accordingly."
This paper follows the lay-out of the original List (Doc.C.M.1975/D:7) wherethe ICES/STATLANT species items were given on BLUE sheets and the BulletinStatistique species items on WEITE sheets.
On the BLUE sheets individual species items (the English and Latin names havebeen derived from the ISSCAAP developed by FAO) are given in.the order of their4-digit ICES/l code, and are accompanied by the relevant 3-Alpha identifiers(developed by the Coordinating Working Party on Atlantic Fishery Statistics)and by the Bulletin Statistique item number under which the data are published.
The WEITE sheets list the Bulletin Statistique items in sequence, giving the'ICES/l code numbers of individual species item(s) of which they are composedand the relevant 3-Alpha identifiers.
Where the English name of a species i tem ends in "n. e. i." (which means "notelsewhere included" and equals "n.s.", "not specified") it may be a residualcatego~J which does not necessarily include all the members of that family orgenus.

The major modifications issuing from the developments mentioned in the aboveresolution are described below:
1. Marine salmonoids have been moved from the "Salmonoids,Diadromous fishes" group to an appropriate group ofmarine species, Le. capelin (0209) to "Pelagic Percomorphs"and argentines (0211) to "Demersal Percomorphs". BulletinStatistique item "Various salmonoids" has been re-named"Various diadromous fishes".
2. The following new species items have been added to theList: 0298, 0313, 0417, 0418, 0530-0538, 0608, 0807,0808, 0905, 1008, 1117, 1221-1224, 1401, 1402, 1499,1501-1503, 1511-1515, 1599, 9901, 9902 and 9999.
Poutassou (=blue whiting) (0414) and Atlantic mackerel(0902) have been identified as separate BulletinStatistique items. Brown, red and various seaweeds havebeen added to the Bulletin Statistique items.
4. There have been slight modifications in some species'items names (mainly by adding "European" or "Atlantic")to bring them in conformity with the revised ISSCAAP.Some major changes have involved "dusky sea perch" (0504)re-named "dusky grouper", "Couch's sea bream" (0513)re-named "red porgy", "common flying squid" (1215) re-named"short-finned squid" and "razor shells" (1219) re-named"razor clams".
5. Six of the 3-Alpha identifiers had to be changed, i.e."ANG" for "MON" (monk) , "GUR" for "GUX" (gurnards), "EEL"for "ELE" (European eel), "SEM" for "SBX" (sea breams),"CRB" for "GRE" (edible crab) and "LOB" for "LBE" (Europeanlobst~r). The initial letter "V" has been reserved for"various" groupings of individual species i tems made inpublications of the CWP member organizations.
Most of the agreed upon changes in the List of ICES species items (together with ...the 3-Alpha identifiers) have also been reflected in Appendix II: List ofNortheast Atlantic Species Items to FAO Fisheries Circular No. 442 (Revision 3):"Notes for Completion of Form STATLANT 27A (Northeast Atlantic)" sent tonational statistical reporting offices in February 1979.
