Carol Shutzbank has put lt al I together. BYO isbooklng Callfornla for us and hopefully we'llplay Vegas. It's going to last close to twononths and we'll be living out of our van. I'mlooking foward to it, intense and new

To understand graffiti you need ffitime. The images which appear on wal ls, bridges, and trcars today is a wholly developed form of corununication--expression--and therefore an art form. But graffiil hashistory. Knowledge of this history wi I I enhance theunderstanding of graffiti as art, and even enhance yourpleasure when you see it---,,yeah, yeah,,, you wi ll sty wheyou see some prime example.

The roots of modern graffiti go back forty years to

first FUCK YOu that appeeared on the subway wai t. Thisfol lowed by the image of a big boner and bal ls, which onlrestated the message. This message was aimed at theAmerican square, who at that time was known as the man inthe grey flannel suit. This guy wouid be going to work,glance up, read the i.nsult, then guickly avert his eyes frthe unaughty' message. He tried to train himself noi tolook at graffiti, but was snagged by the graphic profilethe prick. Foi led into taking a furilve glance, he wouldthen feel the pain of lnsult in the baslc meaning of theimage.

In the mean time FUCK y0U,s and boners lrere becomingboring to the artists while the need to insult the sguaresnever went away. Any way, the sguares had trained themselvnot to glance at wall lnscriptions--at least they weretrying. Maybe a qulck peek, but never staring. This issetting that made modern grafflti take off. New forms ofletters which configrured into shapes of words weresubstituted for conventional English. This was theingenious foil, the genius of the art. Now the square woglance furtively at the .writing on the wal l, glance away arealize that he couldn't guite make out what was written,and glance back for a closer look. This was the sting.This was the big FUCX y0U. The poor square not only getsinsulted, as the original rucK you message is perpetually

implied in allwall graffiil, but he gets caught actuallytrying to get insulted.
