For example, it is now possible for women with heart defects to carry a baby to term with expert help. how are abortions performed?MEDICAL ABORTION (Up to 9 weeks)The first abortion pill kills the baby by blocking a hormone needed for nourishment. The second pill starts contractions and pushes the dead baby out. SUCTION (6 to 14 weeks) A hollow tube with a knife edged tip is inserted into the uterus and tears the unborn child apart and sucks the pieces into a container.DILATION AND EVACUATION (15 to 24 weeks) The unborn child’s body is grasped with a pliers-like instrument and pulled out piece by piece. The head is grasped and crushed in order to remove it through the cervix.INDUCED LABOUR The pregnant woman is given medication to start contractions. Usually the trauma of the labour kills the baby. If the aborted baby is alive, the baby is left struggling for breath until he or she dies. INTRA-CARDIAC INJECTION (21 weeks+) A poison is injected into the unborn child’s heart. If the heart does not stop beating after 30-60 seconds, more poison is injected. Death is expected to occur after 30-60 minutes.
