  • D OWN the years I have often written about the importance ofinnovation, of new product development. It is critical at thebest of times, but when business is in the doldrums andnobody is buying what you've been offering, then the importance offinding something that your potential customers will want to buy isself-evident.I have also, frequently, pointed to the research that shows how the two most

important downturn activities and investments are research and developmentand marketing. These are the twin pillars of recovery from tough times, and countless academic

and economic treatise have pointed to the direct correlation between high andlow downturn R&D and marketing spend, and the relative fortunes of businessesas their markets emerge from recession.Even humble little old 'us' are trying to do our bit to be as future-facing as

possible, and one such idea that we are launching thismonth involves a special digital-only edition of AMDMagazine that will highlight what appear to be thebest, most important, or certainly more interesting newproduct introductions of the current trading period.

E very month we carry as comprehensive as possiblea survey of the new or recent items that new andestablished vendors have for dealers in the v-twin andcustom bike industry, and there is inevitably somewhatof a peak cycle to such introductions - typically from around September andOctober, through to the V-Twin Expo show period to March, or thereabouts.AMDs all new 'HOT 100' is an accolade that you will see appearing alongside

certain selected product items that appear in our monthly editions - there areseveral highlighted as such in this edition - and these products and theirmanufacturers will form the content of a 'HOT 100' special digital-edition of AMDMagazine that we'll make available online to dealers and consumers in the springof each year.In Europe the mainstream 'metric' liquid-cooled motorcycle market is not

doing very well at present - indeed that may well be the understatement of thedecade! As recently as 2007/2008 total PTW (Powered Two Wheeler) sales inEurope were a tad under 3m units a year - by the end of this year that will havedeclined to a tad over 1m in 2013, at best!

E ach year we prepare a special edition of our sister dealer magazine in Europe,International Dealer News, which is for so-called 'metric' or 'mainstream'franchised motorcycle dealers. It is published immediately prior to the annual'Milan show' (EICMA) and the biennial 'Cologne Show' (INTERMOT) and, alongwith the expo review editions we produce after these shows, generally marks ahigh-point in the new product introduction cycle.

However, this year it was startling to note what thin pickings our survey ofexhibitors revealed as the mainstream parts, accessory and apparel industry inEurope recoils from the disastrous fall in market activity taking place.Of more reassuring interest, however, has been the response to our recent

"new product information call" vendor communications here in the v-twin andHarley-Davidson aftermarket - on both sides of the Atlantic.

I n 2010 there were several indicators that made it look like, for a moment ortwo, the downturn was going to have ended up being a relatively short (24 or36 months duration down-cycle - and an encouraging burst of new productactivity at the V-Twin Expo that year was one of those apparent indicators. However, it wasn't sustained, just as the promise of encouraging early season

sales-activity didn't sustain that year, and the downturn became the much deeperand longer-term malaise that many observers had been predicting.I am though pleased to be able to report that so far this season the new product

activity that we are hearing about is promising, andcoming this early and taken with the other indicatorsthat we are seeing maybe in the coming 12 months willnot just see the modest single digit average growth ofthe past 12 to 24 months sustained, but perhaps evenimproved upon.Either way, the early indicators in market R&D

investment terms are encouraging, so it will be apleasure to be able to use AMDs new 'HOT 100'

program to highlight the new product developments that we think are worth asecond look, worthy of a 'mention in dispatches'.If you have, or know about anything new that you think people should know

about, please let us know!Meanwhile look out for the 'HOT 100' logo in this and future editions of AMD

Magazine be sure to let your customers know about the products that are casuingthe greatest interest in the market this season. We have to innovate to survive - the OEs we make parts for do so, and so must

the parts and accessory industry. This is not 'new news'. However the importanceof keeping the R&D and marketing investments rolling when times are toughhasn't been the easiest of 'received wisdoms' for our industry to embrace thistime round - so to those who have managed to do so ... respect!

L EADING up to this year'sEuropean Drag Racefinals at the Santa PodRaceway in the UnitedKingdom in September, theZodiac Racing team had a firmlead in the SuperTwin Top FuelFIM European Championship.Ronny Aasen, the Norwegianrider of the 1000hp plus ZodiacNitro Harley, had a one roundadvantage over Dutch nativeJob Heezen, as well as VesaLipponen from Finland. Inaddition, Finnish rider SamuKemppainen and Christian Jgerfrom Germany still had arealistic chance of winning thechampionship, too.

A fter the Hockenheimround Ton and VincentPels, the father and son teambehind Zodiac, had a closerlook at the data and decidedto put more fuel into theengine for the last race of theseason. Even though theengine was already consumingover 12 gallons ofnitromethane fuel per minute, they still had the feeling thepiston ring damage in

Hockenheim was caused bydetonation. It looked to be the rightdecision, as during the firstqualifier the bike smoked its14in rear tire for the first time inthe season. The 1.11s sixty-foottime showed that soft launcheswere a thing of the past, andjustified the set-up changes.

For the second round, the ignition curve was changeda little, and this time thetire stayed hooked. Ronny wason form with a 1.12s 60ft, 2.86s330ft and a 4.17s 1/8th mile ET,with a 214.9mph top speed. However, at this point the bikegot loose and Ronny had to shutdown and he fought to controlthe bike.

T he run still resulted in a6.599s ET coasting throughthe finish line at 169mph. The1/8th mile speed looked toogood to be true and itturned out it dropped the frontwheel between the speed traps, causing the speed to berecorded higher. Still the datalogger showed that the speedwas around 200MPH at the1/8th mile and with the 4.17s ETon the first half, it was the bestthe bike had ever done by far.The 6.599 put the Zodiac teamin the preliminary number onespot, more than 2/10 of asecond ahead of SamuKemppainen.

I n the 3rd qualifier Ronny wasable to duplicate the run-upto the 330ft mark and this timethe bike ran a lot smoother. However, the primary belt brokeafter 350ft causing the engineto over rev. As a result of this, the team decided to sit out thelast qualifier and rebuild theengine for Sundays elimination. Due to getting the number onequalifying spot the team had abye run in the first round on theSunday. In that round the bikelaunched hard with a little tireshake, but after a few feet thetire hooked up and ran its best

60ft time ever. Then smallflashes started to come out ofthe side of the bike and soonthey became bigger flames.Ronny noticed something waswrong and shut off. Luckilythere was no opponent in theother lane, so the round winwas there. In the pits the damage wasevaluated; the rear head hadlifted. Ton and Vincent quicklystarted to replace the head, while Ronny was doing theroutine maintenance ofreplacing the con-rod bearingsfrom under the bike. When theengine was warmed up for thesecond round of eliminations, alot of smoke came out of theexhausts of the front cylinder, indicating more problems.

F rantically the team tried toreplace the piston andcylinder, but they did not makeit in time. Ironically, Ronny hadto race Vesa Lipponen who nowhad a freebie to the final. This left the championship to bedecided in the final betweenSumu and Vesa, and it was asituation the Zodiac team didnot like, as it was in Samushands whether they wouldbecome champion or not. IfVesa wins the final, he is thechamp. If Samu wins the final, the Zodiac team wins thechampionship. Samu did whathe needed to do, and in a nice6.76 at 206mph he took theevent win and the Zodiac teamtook the European Championship.

WELL known electrical productsmanufacturer and author Jeff Zielinski isone of the markets leading custom bikeelectronics specialists with a productline that is sold the world over by mostleading importers and distributors.

In addition to aftermarket productsfor Harley-Davidson models, NAMZalso provide products and support formost OEMs and their dealers all overthe world, and pride themselves withstaying on top of model changes sothat they can continue to provide topnotch products and service for theircustomers.

Jeff recently pointed to the changesthat Harley-Davidson has made to itsmodel line-up for 2014 and the

challenges that those changesrepresent for the aftermarket.

The Factory has produced some oftheir most advanced motorcycles todate, and in doing so they have raisedthe bar for the aftermarket both interms of product design and features,as well as quality and compatibility.

No aftermarket business canstand still at the best of times, butfollowing what has happened to themotorcycle industry in the past fiveyears, aftermarket vendors have toplace the same priority on R&D,production and process, and newproduct design thinking that themotorcycle manufacturers themselvesare doing.

At NAMZ, we have added aconveyor based, heat-shrink tunnelmachine that will automate our heatshrinking process along with acomputer based wire harness testingmachine that will eliminate anypossible wiring errors.

In order to install these machines,we have invested in more buildingspace, taking us to over 10,000square feet, and putting us in theposition to be able to promise somebig news in early 2014 that willcontinue to keep us and our dealersin the lead when it comes tomotorcycle electrics.

  • POLARIS Industries, theparent company of bothVictory Motorcycles andIndian Motorcycles, has reportedrecord third quarter net incomeof $116.9 million, or $1.64 perdiluted share, for the quarterended September 30, 2013.The figures are up 24 percent and

23 percent, respectively, from the prioryears third quarter net income of$94.3 million, or $1.33 per dilutedshare. Sales for the third quarter 2013totaled a record $1,102.6 million, which represents an increase of 25percent over last years third quartersales of $879.9 million. Scott Wine, Polaris Chairman and

CEO, said: Our record third quarterresults reflect both the ongoingdemand for our existing products andthe potential contained within theinitial shipments of our model year2014 vehicles, the largest new productintroduction in the Companys history. In the third quarter, we launched morenew vehicles than in any previousmodel year, led by the muchanticipated debut of IndianMotorcycles along with severalinnovative variants of Rangers, RZRsATVs and Victory motorcycles.

A dditionally, to complement andenhance our consumersexperience with these vehicles ourPG&A business introduced over 300new model year 2014 accessories plusan expanded apparel line-up. Whilethe new model year 2014 vehicles andaccessories are just now arriving atdealers in meaningful quantities, theinitial feedback has been extremelypositive from consumers to the trademagazines. To receive such accoladesis always gratifying, but we realize thatwe must remain focused on achievingthe full market potential of theserecently released new products whilecontinuing to develop the next waveof industry leading products.

Wine added, Though much of oureffort was focused on successfulproduct launches, we also achieved anumber of financial milestones duringthe 2013 third quarter, includingeclipsing the quarterly $1 billion salesmark for the first time in Polarishistory. Our international businessperformed exceptionally well, up 38percent during the quarter despite aweak economic environment. Part ofthe international growth came fromour most recent acquisition, AixamMega, an important addition to ourexpanding Small Vehicles portfolio.

S ales for the Motorcycles division, which includes both Victory andIndian motorcycle sales, decreased sixpercent to $49.4 million in the 2013third quarter compared to the sameperiod last year. The decrease in the2013 third quarter sales is due toVictory dealers continuing to calibratetheir inventory levels under the newRetail Flow Management ordertaking process, which closely tiesdealer shipments with retail sales, andweaker international motorcycle sales, partially offset by a limited number ofmodel year 2014 Indian motorcyclesthat began shipping late in the quarter. cruiser and touring motorcycle retailsales increased about 20 percentduring the 2013 third quarter ascompared to the prior years thirdquarter. The much anticipated re-launch of

Indian Motorcycle occurred during the2013 third quarter with theintroduction of three all-new modelyear 2014 Indian Chief models: theChief Classic, Chief Vintage, and theChieftain. North American motorcycledealer inventory increased slightlyover 2012 levels due to an increase inthe Victory dealer count and initialshipments of Indian motorcycles.

G ross profit across PolarisIndustries was 30.4 percent ofsales for the third quarter of 2013, anincrease of 90 basis points from the2012 third quarter. Gross profit dollarsincreased 29 percent to $334.8 millionfor the third quarter of 2013,compared to $259.8 million for thethird quarter of 2012. The increase ingross profit, both in terms of absolutedollars and as a percentage of sales, primarily arose from continuedproduct cost reduction efforts andhigher selling prices, offset somewhatby higher promotional costs. Operating expenses for the third

quarter of 2013 increased 31 percentto $165.2 million compared to $126.4

million for the third quarter of 2012.Operating expenses in the thirdquarter of 2013 increased primarilydue to higher sales and marketingcosts related, in part, to the IndianMotorcycle re-launch.

I ncome from financial servicesincreased 42 percent to $11.7million during the third quarter of2013 compared to $8.2 million in thethird quarter of 2012, due to increasedprofitability generated from the retailcredit portfolios with Sheffield, GE andCapital One and higher income fromthe dealer inventory financing throughPolaris Acceptance. Equity in loss of affiliates was $0.6

million for the third quarter 2013,which represents the Companysportion of the start-up costs related tothe Polaris/Eicher joint venture in Indiaestablished in 2012. Other income, net was $2.6 million

in the third quarter of 2013, comparedto $4.0 million in the third quarter of2012. The income generated in thethird quarter in both 2013 and 2012came as a result of foreign currencyexchange rate movements and theresulting effects on foreign currencytransactions related to the Companysforeign subsidiaries.

LESS than four years after Harley-Davidson closed its Buell Motorcyclessubsidiary, Erik Buell is finally back inthe production streetbike market.

His Erik Buell Racing (EBR) businessused the occasion of the first AIMExpoat Orlando, Florida, in October tounveil the successor to their race bredlimited edition 1190RS Super Bike the 1190RX street legal sportbike.

Based on its ET-V2 1190 cc liquidcooled v-twin engine, the 1190RXweighs in at just 419 pounds, anddelivers 185bhp, and an almost

unprecedented 102 ft.lbs of torque said to be one of the highest levels ofpeak torque even seen on a streetlegal production sportbike.

With 21 traction control settingsand broad torque band, the engine issaid to deliver a combinedhighway/city fuel economy of over 40mpg and hydrocarbon and nitrousoxide exhaust emissions that are saidto be less than 25 percent of thoseallowed by the US EnvironmentalProtection Agency standards (carbonmonoxide emissions are said to be just6 percent of the level allowed by US

federal regulations). With what is quite rightly being

described by the company as abreakthrough engine design, raceinspired handling features, all-newstyling and scientifically-derivedaerodynamics, EBR is claiming that the1190RX rivals the performance anddriveablilty of any superbike producedby any manufacturer in the world.

The EBR 1190RX is completelyassembled at the East Troy, Wisconsin, facility with full scale productionscheduled to begin in December 2013at a remarkable domestic US MSRP of$18,995.

In a comprehensive approach to thelaunch, EBR has announcedrepresentation on the Europeanmarket with an import organizationbeing headed by Dutchman EdwinBelonje Managing Director of ErikBuell Racing LLC.

Formerly managing director for ZeroMotorcycles in Europe, and theinternational Sales and Marketing

Manager for Triumph Motorcycles inEurope and Asia, Belonje said that itis a great challenge for me to build andexpand the famous Erik Buell Racingbrand in Europe. I am convinced thatwith the innovative capabilities of EBTMotoryclces, the products will bedistinctive in the market place.

My first task I to set up a Europeandistribution network, and while theEBR 1990RX is impressive, I believethere is much more to come.

B Y the time you read this edition of American Motorcycle Dealer, the all-new AIMExpo at Orlando, Florida, will have taken place already. The cycle of domestic US powersports industry expo discontent that gave rise

to the AIMExpo project, and the panic that the new show's announcement andinexorable march towards apparent success triggered at Advanstar Inc., thecompany that has owned and operated the 'Indy' Dealer Expo, appears to havedriven 'Indy' towards its final death throes. After multiple versions of their response to the new rival came and went, the

latest twist in this particular example of self-destruction comes with Advanstar'sannouncement not only of yet another change of date, but also now a changeof venue, too.In the past the company has consistently insisted that, of all places, Chicago

would be one of the very worst host cities in which to stage the once pre-eminent domestic US powersports industry trade show, but their latest news isindeed of a move for Dealer Expo to the notoriously expensive, rigidly unionizedand exhibitor-unfriendly embrace of Chicago's McCormick Place. What is more, having seen AIMExpo defy Advanstar's historic insistence that

'sun-belt' venues were death for the business focus of trade show attendees bysuccessfully attracting over 400 exhibitors to the gentle climes of Florida in theFall, Advanstar has seen fit not just to move 'Indy' even further North, but swapFebruary for December!

F OUNDED in 2009, Rocket Bobs CycleWorks has already built aninternational following on the internetand solidified its status as a top level customshop when one of its builds Gasd Rat tookthird place in the Freestyle class at the 2013World Championship of Custom BikeBuilding.

The place in the top five at the Championship wasa major achievement for Pete Pearson, the man whoestablished and runs Rocket Bobs with his wife Lisa.Going to Essen for the World Championship was areal game changer for us. It was mindblowing to seethe quality of some of the work on the bikes there. You see that and its just so special, it really gets yougoing and gives you so many new ideas. What I gotfrom Essen was that if you want to be taken seriously,to become a known name like Roger Goldammer, you have to go out and do some wild engineering.

Being able to achieve some wild engineering isnot something that should prove to be much ofa problem for Pete. For as long as he can rememberhes been surrounded by engines, as his father ran agarage and owned numerous MGB GTs and E-TypeJaguars, and it was in one of these that the youngPete learnt to drive, sitting on his fathers lap. It wasa short while later that Pete first got the bike bug, as

he explains: I first discovered motorbikes when Iwas 10 or 11, and it was around that time when Ifirst found out what a Harley was. I walked in to aroom and saw one being talked about on TV, andfrom that point they became a lifelong passion.

Motorcycles may have become a lifelong passion, but it did not sit well with his father. At 16 years oldPete convinced his father to lend him the money to

buy a Yamaha FS1E, but his father only agreedbecause he considered it to be a moped, as it hadpedals as well as a 50cc two-stroke engine. Within afew months Pete had paid his father back and tradedthe FS1E in against a Yamaha RD250. This trade didnot go down well. He didnt speak to me for a long

    Im a Rocket Man

Pete Pearson spent many years racing Japanese motorcycles but, he had a fondness forHarley-Davidsons dating back to his childhood. After taking a break from bikes he

purchased a Street Bob and with wife Lisa went on to launch Rocket Bobs Cycle Works,a company combining the styling cues of Bobbers with his background in race bikes

  • time after that, and that was when I started racing.I put a 400cc motor in it, raced it, blew it up, rebuiltit and carried on like that.

R acing was put on the back burner for a whilewhen Pete went to university to studyEngineering Design. Despite being well qualified inhis chosen field after graduating, Pete did not followa regular career routine, rather he decided to carryon racing and to fund his habit he took to dispatchriding in London. He takes up the story of his exploitsduring that time: After university I got seriouslyinvolved in racing bikes, fast Japanese productionclass racers especially, but also track days, dragracing, anything that allowed me to go as fast as Ipossibly could. But in that race crowd tellingsomeone you liked Harleys was opening yourself upto ridicule.

I was dispatching in London as a way of paying

for my racing habit. I did 10 winters, and every yearId say Im not doing another winter. But in thesummer it was the best job in the world, basicallygetting paid to unofficially race all day long. Themoney was really good then as well. Two days workwas enough to be able to take the rest of the weekoff. It was easy to earn 500 in a week, and that wasa lot of money back then, more than enough to payfor a weekends racing.

While dispatch-riding may have been well paidit was also dangerous. After one too many of

Petes friends died in accidents related to eitherdispatch riding or racing he decided it was time toput motorcycles behind him. As he says: I had totake a break because I was constantly trying to gofaster and faster and forgetting the simple joy ofriding a motorbike for fun what its really allabout. He sold his bikes and embarked upon acareer in the IT industry. It was during this periodaway from bikes when he met Lisa, who was to havea significant impact on his life. Not only did Lisabecome Petes wife she also rekindled his interest inriding.

Petes return to motorcycling came about as adirect result of him marrying Lisa. The weddingvenue was Las Vegas, and the couple chose to hire aHarley-Davidson and get married at a ride-throughchapel. It was after the ceremony when Pete wasriding the Strip with Lisa as pillion that he had amoment of clarity.

It was the best time Ive ever had on a bike, ridingthe Strip after marrying Lisa in Vegas. When I first

  • started riding, however young I was, it wasnt aboutthe corners or doing wheelies or going as fast aspossible, it was just about riding, and that wasexcitement enough. And I got that feeling again onthat Fat Boy in Vegas. I knew then what I wanted todo, so I started to look at the scene. The Street Bobhad just been launched, and so I started to do myhomework. A year later I had built up a reputationon US bike forums and Id got myself a Street Bob,too.

T he forums that Pete was regularly posting onincluded H-D Riders and Harley-DavidsonOwners, where he was talking about the ideas hehad for bikes and possible changes to them and thenparts he had started to fabricate for use on his ownbike with a view to eventually making the partsavailable for sale. As is so often the way, it was notlong before a request for parts came Petes way andthe first Rocket Bobs product was sold. Despite beingbased in the UK, the first official sales was to acustomer in New York, who ordered a Pintail seatunit. The Pintail is a replacement seat unit thatremoves the stock fender struts and converts Dynamodels to single seaters. That customer, PaulOrlando, still has the Pintail seat unit and is now agood friend of Petes who sources dual throat carbsfor him like the one used on Gasd Rat. He has alsorecently supplied Pete with two more dual throatsthat Pete has plans for that include taking a bike toBonneville.

It was not only the internet that was being usedto promote Rocket Bobs when the business wasgetting started. Pete was also taking his own bikeout and showing it off. On one occasion he rode tohis local H-D dealer, Oxford Harley-Davidson, andonce there parked the bike up and left it with a stackof business cards tucked under the seat for peopleto help themselves. Unfortunately, no one took a

card, but the bike did get the attention of thedealerships manager who had a Rocker in store thathe was having trouble selling. After seeing Petesbike, complete with Pintail and Voodoo fender kitfitted, he asked Pete to take the Rocker away and seewhat he could do with it to freshen it up and makeit more sellable.

W hen Pete returned the bike it had a new seatand rear fender, mini turn signals, Big Radiusexhausts and lowered suspension, all of which wasenough for it to sell almost immediately. Soimpressed was the store manager with the results ofPetes work that he bought in another six Rockersthat he wanted Pete to work on. Unfortunately, assoon as he had purchased the Rockers the managerwas let go and the potential custom program wasshelved.

However, by this time Pete had already foundworkshop space where he could undertake the workon the Rockers. Around that time I was doing a lotof running, and I regularly used to run past a farm, and one day I stopped and asked the farmer if I couldrent a corner of one of his barns as workshop space. He let me use a corner of one of his barns rent freefor nearly three years. It was a great time, he nevercharged me anything the whole time I was there.Without him we wouldnt be here. We effectivelystarted Rocket Bobs on a credit card in that barn.

Despite not having the six Rockers to rework,Rocket Bobs soon found itself busy. Andy Hornsby, the editor of UK consumer magazine American-V,had seen the Rocker Pete had rebuilt at Oxford H-Dand subsequently featured it in the magazine withthe inevitable result that people started to take noteof Petes work. Pete is quick to point out how Andyhas continued to support him since then, stating:Whatever I did, Andy would feature in themagazine. Whatever new parts I brought out Andywould run editorial on them. He is one of thosepeople who has helped us out so much along overtime. Weve been really lucky with the people wevemet along the way.

T he help that Pete received from Andy included afront cover shot of Petes own Dyna and rollingtest bed Voodoo Child. It was also this bike that ledPete to the World Championship of Custom BikeBuilding. By his own admission Pete didnt at thetime know the Championship existed, as he simplydidnt read custom bike magazines, mainly due to hisbeing more interested in performance than paint and

chrome. When a customer suggested he enter oneof the Championships affiliate events, the bike hetook to the London show was Voodoo Child.

I took my Street Bob, which I thought wasamazing, to the Alexandra Palace show but as soonas I walked in I realized I need to up my game.because the bike had an all matt finish it just blendedinto the background.

Once I got back from that show I suddenly knewwhat I wanted to do. My next build, Blackbird, wentto another affiliate show and took third in class, andthat was great. Then after that there was a reallyquick build (Bank Robber), which was a class winnerat the Alexandra Palace show in 2012. That wontravel expenses for me to take it to the WorldChampionship in Sturgis.

O ne of the effects of winning the Sturgis prize atthe London affiliate show was that suddenly thedemand for Rocket Bobs, parts and customer bikebuilds suddenly and significantly increased, so muchso that Pete was unable to make the trip to Sturgisas he was unwilling to take the time out from

Having been inthe current location for a little over 18 months, thebusiness once again needs more space and Pete andLisa are planning to add a mezzanine level inside theunit to allow more space, which will be used to carrya higher level of stock. The current situation with production parts is that

the company offers more lines than it shows on itswebsite, and there are more new options on the way. Each new piece is designed and developed in houseby Pete and Lisa, and then, when they are satisfiedwith the fit and finish, the CAD files are sent to alocal engineering company which handles theproduction runs. By contracting the production out itallows more time to concentrate on developing newparts and also work on customers bike builds andshop bikes.

The development of new parts is something thatPete enjoys, but it is not without problems, as heexplains: Its easy to make a one-off part, but tomake a part that can be reproduced and thenpackaged and sold is really difficult. Because thatproduction part is going to be fitted to someoneelses bike, you have to cover every eventuality. OurVoodoo fender kits should be really easy to fit, butsome of the feedback we get is from people askingthe most basic of questions. That is the problem, youhave to make everything as simple as possible.Having said that, Pete then went on to say that

the next part he would like to bring to production isa fairing with a heavily Japanese influenced design, and it is easy to imagine that the issue of making

that suitable for mass production and fitment tonumerous bikes will be extremely challenging. However, it would seem that taking on nearimpossible challenges are what drives Pete.Following his success in Essen, Germany, at the

World Championship, he has already begun work onhis next ground-up build. His plan is to take the biketo the 2014 World Championship, then take it toPendine Sands in Wales for a shakedown run at thespeed trial held on the beach there, before headingover to the US to Bonneville to compete at the BUBSpeed Trials on the Salt Flats. Early plans for the new bike include a 167ci

methanol-burning motor with the barrels, pistonsand heads all being made in-house. While others goto Bonneville to break records, Pete has other ideas:Im not that bothered about getting a record, but ifI detonate the engine thatll make me happy - to havegotten a bike so finely tuned that its bound toexplode.

H aving the bike detonate its engine is not whatcustom builders usually aspire to, but that is notall Pete would like to achieve with the bike as he alsowants to place higher in the World Championshipthan the third place he achieved with Gasd Rat. The fact that Gasd Rat placed so highly at the

World Championship has brought more publicity forRocket Bobs as the bike has been seen on numeroussites on the internet, and it is an area that Pete hasalways been keen on using. Without the internetRocket Bobs simply wouldnt have happened, saysPete, commenting on the impact modern technologyhas had on his business. Even before Facebook Iwas on bike forums the whole time pushing thebusiness. On Facebook recently I found a picture ofa swingarm we make, but dont advertise on thewebsite, and reposted it as a new picture on

Facebook and almost immediately had an order fromAustralia for one. Without things like Facebook wesimply wouldnt have that global reach.

T he potential use of Facebook to capture newmarkets can clearly be seen in the sales of RocketBobs parts internationally, with product shipping tocustomers across Europe, and in Australia, UAE,Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Brazil, Hawaii, Israel andPanama. This is in addition to 75 percent of all of thecompany output of parts that currently ships to theUSA. I knew there was a gap in the market. Everyone

was doing Softails, but the Street Bob rides reallywell, so I started developing parts for it and theysold, is how Pete sums up the ongoing and rapidsuccess of Rocket Bobs. He is then quick to add: Lisahas always run the business with me, we started ittogether. I dont know how she manages to help meout with the builds and then takes care of theaccounts and the general running of the businesstoo. She helped to design the Zombi bars for instanceand was there helping me all through the build ofGasd Rat.While Pete continues to develop the ideas he has

for new parts, Lisa is steering the business towardssteady growth and has overseen an increase incontracting out production of parts, allowing themto reduce lead times on deliveries and start listingparts in the Custom Chrome Europe catalog. Rocket Bobs has developed very quickly, but the

quality of its parts cannot be disputed when theshops own bikes, built using these parts, continuallyplace highly in international competitions, and withthe input of Pete drawing on his racing experienceand Lisas steadying hand, the companys continuedsuccess should be a certainty.

BC Battery Controller has launched what itclaims to be the worlds first ever universalcharger for lead-acid and LiFePo4 batteries.Lithium batteries are gaining in popularity, but manufacturer Forelettronica say that it isneither efficient nor safe to charge andmaintain them with traditional lead-acidchargers (traditional or smart), as they coulddamage the battery and endanger the user. However, the company says that its new BCBattery Controller brand 'BC Duetto' is an all-in-one smart charger with two specific andseparate altorithms for the differing needs oflead-acid and LiFeP04 12V batteries. The unit features two different chargingprograms, lead-acid mode and LiFePO4mode. The program selection is easy andintuitive with an innovative Easy Plug-inSystem, which just requires the user to putthe clamps together and to connect thedevice to the power supply to switch fromlead-acid mode to LiFePO4 mode or viceversa. The active charging mode is shown ona LED bar, and the last selected option willalways be held in memory for later usage. The lead-acid charging mode features anautomatic eight-step charging and testingprogram, which allows it to recover deeplydischarged batteries (starting from 1.5V),recharge, desulfate and maintain all kindsof lead-acid 12V batteries (including sealed,VRLA, AGM and gel batteries) and even torecognize defective batteries, which are nolonger able to retain the charge. As a LiFePO4 charger, BC Duetto executes aseven-step algorithm which allows a fastand efficient charging of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, and charge balancingbetween the battery cells and maintenanceof an optimum state of charge even for longperiods. Batteries are monitored by the internalmicroprocessor during the whole chargingprocess, allowing the user to keep thedevice always connected.
