I t’s been one sequence of corporate upheaval after another in recent years for respected chassis and performance engineer Erik Buell. However, whisper it softly, but it may be that his latest cycle of "difficulties" may after all be about to take a turn for the better - for the time being at least. After running out of money a year ago, a tortuous on-off process of asset auctions made it unclear (unlikely even) that his EBR business would ever survive an administration process that quickly became liquidation. EBR is the business that Buell phoenixed from the ashes of Harley's 2009 decision to close Buell Motorcycles, as it reacted drastically to the downturn under the leadership of CEO Keith Wandell. Buell had started the business in 1983; Harley took a 49 percent position in it in 1993, and then took over full ownership 10 years later. Initially EBR was a race bike business, focused on the 1190RS it launched in 2011. In 2013 EBR sold a 49.2 percent stake to ambitious Indian motorcycle manufacturer Hero Motor Corp as it looked for a northern hemisphere foothold that could be a springboard for entry into the higher value and larger displacement North American and European markets. Initially that deal looked robust as Hero established a race team, and a European EBR subsidiary was set up with sales underway of its 1190RX production street bike derivative, and the 2013 announcement of plans for an 1190SX streetfighter styled "muscle bike". Indeed there were plans for an adventure bike too, believed to have been designated 1190AX, and work was well underway helping Hero to develop new models, the HX250R among them. Hero is the world's largest single entity motorcycle manufacturer, by unit volume, but efforts to leverage its "strategic alliance" with, and investment in, East Troy, Wisconsin based EBR always looked ambitious, especially in relation to the price it paid for its stake. That stake was a $25m investment, and it clearly proved inadequate as EBR collapsed with debts put at around $20m when it filed for protection in 2015, leaving some 126 employees with uncertain futures. There still are rumors and uncertainties about the exact role that Hero played (or more to the point did not play) in securing EBR's position. That uncertainty was only worsened by a liquidation process that saw Hero successfully bid for some assets it claimed as its own, and two failed attempts by at least two other bidders to secure the remaining tooling and parts - one of those bidders had been Belfer, of Atlantic Metals Group in New Jersey, who was also hoping to secure a future for EBR as a viable manufacturer. Low hanging fruit is high 'Octane' stuff

4 AMERICAN MOTORCYCLE DEALER - MARCH 2016 www.AMDchampionship.com

As anticipated, the new Victory Octane dares to go where Harleyhas feared, or failed to tread. Clearly aimed at thecontemporary taste for post-streetfighter street-performers, itmarks yet another bold initiative in what is increasingly looking

like a slam-dunk for Polaris. With Indian competing (convincingly) head-on with Harley's core legacy cruisers, then picking off what looks like amajor business opportunity with the Victory 'Octane', and therebymaking one of Harley's pathways way more difficult than it would havebeen if Milwaukee had struck first or managed to better evolve theirinitial V-Rod offerings by now.The Scout is likely to compete hard against the Sportster, and the Springfield willoffer yet another option against Harley's core Big Twin market. The news that an,albeit at this stage race-only, 750cc twin, set for flat-track, is proving to make iteven more imperative that the much vaunted new models that Harley is expectedto unveil this year had better be about platform and not just capacity.Strategically 'Octane' is not rocket science. The niche it is likely to now define hasbeen pretty apparent as a yawning chasm of opportunity for some years. With other'low hanging fruit' just waiting to be picked-off (adventure Tourers and urbanEnduro in particular), it is stating the blindingly obvious, butthe motorcycle market has emerged from the downturnmuch changed. Our demographic is increasingly more broad based in termsof its riding and ownership tastes and expectations, andincreasingly less tainted by the tribalism of the past, lessweighed down by motorcycle culture baggage and a lotmore inclined to want their choices to offer stretch andchallenge rather than conservative reinforcement of preconceptions andstereotypes. From a custom parts and accessory industry perspective, all this is undiluted goodnews. The platform of choice no longer needs to be limited to someone else's take on'cool' and, at last, well gone are the days when "custom" had itself fallen underthe spell of "cookie cutter". The irony of the mainstream of the custom market asseen at the majority of shows and in the majority of magazines between the late'90s and around '09, especially in the United States, is that custom had becomeconservative. It had descended from an expression of individuality into class structures that forcedcustom motorcycle design and engineering back into the box it was supposed tobreak free from - righteous disdain rather than "nice idea, way-to-go" had becomethe response to anything adventurous. The so-called 'keepers-of-the-flame' purists, uncritically greeted innovation with indignation, censure and downright hostility -yet those perpetrating the fraud just couldn't see the paradox. When the events program that eventually became the AMD World Championshipof Custom Bike Building first appeared on the scene, we attracted no end of criticismfrom those who "liked it the way it was" and who championed a status quo thatwould see it forever remain thus if they had it their way. We were always all for themarket's heritage being preserved and celebrated, but someone needed toshowcase the also much needed unrestrained way forward that would be neededfor the industry to be able to reach future generations of riders.

Fast forward 10-15 years, and much of what we were doing has itself morphedfrom radical to mainstream (mission accomplished!), and as a whole newgeneration of builders and shows take that forward further still, "the child truly hasnow eaten the parent" (to resurrect a much used phrase from this column in yearspast). Now the mainstream OEs are falling over themselves to offer platforms thatkick sand in the face of conventional productionization to instead embraceplatforms that are canvases for personalization - a concept that was once theirenemy is now their friend. The Victory 'Octane' is self-evidently a major opportunity for the aftermarket. Asyou'll see in next month's AMD Magazine edition, the likes of Yamaha with their'Yard Built' program, and Ducati with the their 'Custom Rumble' competition, areaggressively targeting the riders that might otherwise have felt no option but to bedrawn to conventional air-cooled 45-degree V-twins to get their self-expressionkicks. Above all though, they are targeting those who would never have realizedthat you didn't need to be a so-called "Master Builder" in order to be able to goto the party. Please sir, can we have those consumers as our customers too?In the early 1990s, especially in Europe, that "conventional" custom platformattracted many from the 'metric' and especially from the then burgeoning

'streetfighter' style market away from the yards of plumbingand acres of plastic that characterized the wrap forJapanese power plants - precisely because of the versatilitythat the V-twin offered as an "engineer's canvas".Some 25 years later, and what goes round has spun again. The 'retro-vibe', the garage-build, and the scramble forScramblers and new beard styles are in the vanguard as amarket that was once niche has itself become the primary

driver of overall international motorcycle industry growth - certainly in the northernhemisphere. The news that Erik Buell may again be back in business is, of course, welcome, butit is a very smart move to make the first model to come out of the re-financed factory- the 1190 SX - the 'streetfighter' styled 1190 variant that EBR had just startedbuilding when it all went smelly for them a year ago. With BMW using their R nineT as their weapon of choice, and the slew of new-for-2016 Triumphs about to be augmented by a production 'Bobber', Indian and Victoryare only the tip of the iceberg of competitive pressure that now haunts Harley-Davidson.Meanwhile, over in the lil' ol' aftermarket - bring it on I say! The more OE capitalthat is being sunk into the message of individuality the better it is for custom partsmakers, designers and retailers of all kinds. The more that consumers are encouraged to think of life beyond the crate, thebetter. Another few more years of this, and even though the metal may be a differentshape and carry a different badge, perhaps finally we'll be back where it all started.

those perpetratingthe fraud couldn'tsee the paradox

(LAP) emerged successful in Januaryat the third time of asking. No stranger to motorcycle andpowersports industry liquidations, from the outset Melvin has made itclear that he wanted to try to securea future for EBR as a going concern, returning it to production before itcould be sold-on as a viable businessto owners that would develop it as anAmerican motorcycle manufacturer.LAP has been one of the 'go-to'liquidation specialists in themotorcycle and powersports industry.Their prior industry involvements havebeen many and varied. LAP was thecompany that Harley-Davidson usedto sell off the assets of BuellMotorcycles in the first place in 2010,and have previously been involved inseveral other powersports industryasset disposals - such as "Gilroy"Indian, American Ironhorse andCannondale. Indeed, LAP is currentlyconducting the sale of the remainingparts stock of Columbus, Ohio basedDixie Distributing. At the time of writing LAP was slatingMarch 17th as the day for productionto recommence, and inviting the

media to go to the factory to witnessthe latest twist in the Buell story. The new company, EBR Motorcycles,LLC, will start with production of 20161190RX and 1190SX motorcycles. Thefirst bikes are scheduled to roll off theline on March 17th with a Press Dayfor approved media, with March 18thslated as a day for "the public, BuellNation, and EBR fans to attend theEBR launch party at the factory."Bill Melvin Jr., who will be CFO of thenew business, is quoted as saying that"this would not be possible withoutthe EBR team. All the credit goes tothem for waiting out the stormsduring the last year. Now the cloudshave cleared, EBR is able to shift intogear knowing that it has financialstability, a profitable multi-year plan, and a 5-10 year vision. We feel thereis still room for new partnerships orinvestment, but it is not critical. EBR ison solid ground and movingforward."Erik Buell, who will serve as ChiefTechnical Officer, said: "I am reallylooking forward to the launch and thepress day. I have dedicated my life tothis and want to get the word out onhow great our motorcycles are."

The lines are smooth andclassic, seamlessly blending one curveinto the next; the designs aredeceptively simple with no extraneousadditions that add weight and detractfrom performance."

Reuters reports that a recentstudy into road traffic accidents inMichigan, USA, shows thatdeaths and head injuries amongmotorcyclists "rose sharply" inthe three years after the staterepealed its mandatory helmetlaw. Published in the AmericanJournal of Surgery, the report saysthat deaths at the scene of anaccident have more thanquadrupled, while deaths in thehospital tripled, with head injuriesincreasing overall and more ofthem being severe.

products, is an opportunity for brandprofile development - in stark contrastto Harley's always inappropriatelyshort-sighted and insular track recordin such matters. The whole point about the conceptteaser campaign, about working withthe likes of Urs Erbacher and ZachNess, was to demonstrate theversatility of what was about to beunveiled, and that the companyunderstands that it doesn't hold amonopoly on design and engineeringintelligence, creativity and experience. This is clearly a platform that is goingto exploit the market opportunity thatHarley-Davidson singularly failed tomake their own with the V-Rod, andone that will no doubt spawn variantsa-plenty in the coming months andyears.Convincing as a stock showroom flooroffer it no doubt will be, in sales terms, this first production model is clearlydesigned to pull a double shift - createsales, yes, but also to create a volumeniche (if that's not too much of anoxymoron) that mainlines straight intoone of the riding experience spaceswhere the mind-set of mainstreamconsumer thinking is headed. The stock bore, stroke andcompression ratio of 'Octane' look likethey offer plenty of scope for seeingthe stock 104 bhp and 76 ft.lbs torquebeing taken up a few notches, and thenear optimum 60 degree v-twin layoutprovides the space (and, presumably, the metal) to play with. The chassis configuration is certainlygoing to be capable of taking morepower as the use of the solid mountedpowertrain as a stressed member to tietogether the cast-aluminum semi-double-cradle tubular-steel backbonesframe has "robust" stamped all over itjust as assuredly as the fuel-injected,liquid-cooled DOHV 4-valve percylinder wet clutch 6-speedconfiguration screams "tune me".At under 600 lbs, this first foray intoproper temperature control and 21stcentury engine and gearboxtechnology can hardly be expected tobe Polaris' last. The much speculated upon new liquid-

cooled engine that Harley may (or stillmay yet not) be about to give somekind of debut to later this year hasprobably already been ambushed. If it turns out that, initially, it is only asolution to better pushing their tourersalong in straight lines, then fairenough, that isn't what this newVictory engine is about. But if Milwaukee harbors fantasiesthat it could be the start of somethingmore strategic, then it may turn out tobe too little too late. The pavements ofthe motorcycle industry are litteredwith missed opportunities - havinghad multiple opportunities to be wayahead of the curve (Eric Buell, MVAgusta, Project Nova/Overlord etc),are Harley now likely to bepermanently consigned to playingcatch-up where "American Muscle" isconcerned?

As tear-down was underway at the downtown Cincinnati, Ohio exhibitioncenter on Sunday the almost universal sentiment among the show's loyalexhibitor community was that they'd had a good weekend. After a long time suffering the effects of the downturn that started tosavage the motorcycle industry in 2008, the spike seen in attendeeengagement with exhibitors last year has proven to be a robust foundation.Still the only expo of its kind, V-Twin Expo has reconfirmed its status as themarket's primary business showcase with all the exhibitors that AMDMagazine spoke with pleased with the Saturday attendance saying that ofitself the crowds of qualified buyers in the aisles justified theirinvestments. For the first time in a couple of years and the last time in a few more theshow clashed with the NFL Superbowl and while that didn't appear to havedeterred dealers on the Saturday of the expo, the Sunday crowd was thin. The primary industry concerns expressed by exhibitors over the weekendfor once had nothing to do with the market's competing shows and events. It was Harley-Davidson's performance and continuing alarm at the

consolidation and vendor instability in the market that exercised minds. In the case of Harley-Davidson rumors circulated about a new liquid-cooledengine that would appear to be finally ready for debut later this year. However, reports concerning its likely deployment primarily appeared tofocus on it being a new Touring platform replacement for the existing lineof Twin Cam engines, not as the basis of a much needed new platform thatcould add new rider demographics to the 'Bar 'n' Shield' balance sheet.Aftermarket concern about Harley-Davidson's present corporate malaiseand aging product offer was palpable. In strategic terms the market is painfully aware of the challenges that theconventional parts and accessory product channels are facing, with pressurefrom market consolidation and increasing by-passing of brick-and-mortaroutlets compromising dealer profits, reducing vendor turnovers and forcingsmaller vendors still further to the margins.Always the life blood of the custom parts and accessory industry, and a richvein of returnees for V-Twin Expo, the more difficult life gets for thespecialists the poorer the market becomes for our customers.

The issue of using the obvious benefits of solarenergy to charge motorcycle batteries is one that hasadvantage and opportunity, but also frustration anddifficulty in equal measure.Solar chargers are a great concept, but even in goodsunlight they deliver low power, slowly. Not knowing how the charging is going and thestatus of the battery at any given time in the process,is one of the biggest issues when using a solar panelto charge. However, TecMate say that their OptiMate

Solar controllers provide that information at a glance– battery status, and even if there is sufficient sun tocharge the battery. The OptiMate Solar controller is light and smallenough to be located at the battery, hanging directlyoff the fitted battery lead, instantly allowing youaccess to full information at a glance - such as if thereis sufficient sunlight (and therefore solar power) tocharge the battery at all, and if there is sufficientpower for a charge, is it charging or maintaining thebattery? Best of all, it will tell you if and when thebattery is ready to deliver. Unhappy owners of standard 12V solar panels canadd an OptiMate Solar charger kit and instantlyimprove their ability to work with the solar chargingprocess. There is a choice of two options - theTecMate TM520 Solar charger kit works on 12Vbatteries, and the TM521 Solar charger kit willconvert a standard 12V solar panel into a 6V batterycharger. Both kits are delivered with high quality cableaccessories, including the O-1 weatherproof batterylead and O-4 OptiMate battery clips that connectdirectly to the OptiMate charge controller, as well asa polarity converter for other brands of solar panel.

If you don't have a solar panel, but would like to usesolar power if the experience can be made user-friendly and reliable, then the TM-524 OptiMateSolar charge kit includes a high quality 6W solarpanel that comes with 3m/10ft output lead that endsin the OptiMate charge controller. An SAE in-lineconnection allows the cable to be extended in caseyou plan to mount the panel further away.

It's specified by C&S because of its tensilestrength, fatigue limit and resistance to corrosion -even when the surface is abraded."It is generally recognized that road handling

characteristics are enhanced by reducing amachine's unsprung weight. All things beingequal, a lighter motorcycle will accelerate faster, stop faster, and be easier to turn when changingdirection, so when looking for performance, lighter is better."Dealers can select stock lengths up to 10" overstock. C&S Custom supplies both single units andfull kits, which include fasteners, caliper, wheeland chain, depending on what is required. Theunits are designed for Dynas from 2006 topresent.Established in 1999, C & S Custom has becomebest known as one of America's leading sportsbikeperformance engineers and customizers withbillet accessories and wide tire kits to one-offcustom built motorcycles. As anyone who has seenany of the company's custom bikes in the flesh willattest, it has a deserved reputation for quality andleading edge design. The company also has a large range of custom andperformance options for Big Twins and V-Rods,including 300, 330 and 360 series wide tire kits, wide triple trees for 240, 300, 330 and 360 frontwheels, and raked custom triple trees for 21 and23" front wheels.

2016-style Softail turn signal connector extensions We were speaking with electrics guru JeffZielinski (of Namz Products/Badlands fame)at the V-Twin Expo, and he was talkingabout the number of times he gets callsfrom dealers and customizers who havefallen foul of Harley's habit (and it appliesto other OEs too) of making theoreticallysmall changes that have significant knock-on effects."It seems that every year the factory sneaksin some changes to a particular model, and2016 was no exception," Jeff said. Butluckily you don’t need to worry aboutfinding out the hard way, as the NAMZ crewhas you covered. "On the 2016 Softail the factory changedthe connectors used on the front turnsignals and to move them, you’ll need our

100 percent Plug-n-Play extensions - theyare simple to install, have color matchingwire, connectors and are guaranteed to fit,"according to Jeff.NAMZ is celebrating its 17th year inbusiness providing "World Class" electricalcomponents, fluid transfer lines, custominstallation supplies and the popularBadlands brand lighting modules. Victory 'Octane'

The new Victory Octane is a platformabout which so more can be said, strategically and technically. The aftermarket as we know it can nolonger depend solely on Harley's XLsand Big Twins. With peak-baggerhaving been passed and uncertaintysurrounding the future strength ofdemand for Harley's core offerings, theadvent of the "New Indians" havealready represented a much neededshot-in-the-arm for aftermarketprospects - as well as an unwelcome, though surely predictable, shot-across-the-bows for Milwaukee. With the Octane, Polaris has done itagain - but on steroids. From an aftermarket perspective theplatform is a gift that will just keepgiving. While it would be impossible tospeculate at this stage about just howhigh the production numbers willclimb (they don't need to be huge forthe bike to be nonetheless hugelysignificant), the one thing that we canbe sure of is that at the kind of retailprice point it has been introduced, thescope for aftermarket opportunity will

be immense. What is more, we are not talking (only)bolt-on here. The Scouts and the Chiefsare all begging to be dressed and re-visualised, but the Octane is beggingto be engineered and retuned. For a start, it is a raging certainty thatit won't be long before that front endgets beefed up (48mm upsidedownies?) and the rear suspensiongets piggy-backs. It is crying out forlightweight wheels, sports brakes, replacement pipes, titanium valve-train, fuel-injection tuning, new bars, instruments and controls - to saynothing of an improved seat(something from the Le Pera studioperhaps?). Victory's launch info already details astage one replacement exhaust, piggyback shocks, drag bars and a tach withshift light, so they are clearly aware ofthe machine's destiny at the hands of

the market's tuners, and I can't wait tosee what the likes of Brock'sPerformance, 'T-Man' Riser, DanFitzmaurice, Hoban Brothers, ScottSjovall and so many others are able tomake of it.Victory in particular, and Polaris ingeneral, have a much moreenlightened attitude to seeing theaftermarket as a potential partnerrather than as their enemy. They havean established modus operandi thathas not only seen them buying thirdparty candidates for the PG&Aprograms, but also sees them workingwith aftermarket vendors on anindependent basis. They understandthat doing so, making it worthwhile forother vendors to market their
