THE AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building has never been about numbers, it has always been about quality, about design and engineering, and about being a showcase for the rising talents and future trends of the custom motorcycle industry. However, this year's 11th annual AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building is set to establish some truly impressive numbers. The World Championship program has always sought to find ways to expose the creativity and craftsmanship of the custom motorcycle market to the largest possible audience of existing and potential riders. Riders who are already sold on customization, riders who can be motivated into engaging with the custom industry as a result of seeing what it has to offer them, and consumers for whom the 'art of the possible' in custom motorcycle terms will be the driver that brings them into the two-wheel world. By being staged at the world famous INTERMOT exhibition at Cologne, Germany, (the "Cologne Show") this year's AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building is set to show unprecedented numbers of riders just how far the custom motorcycle market has come in the past 25 years. INTERMOT regularly attracts between 200,000 and 250,000 visitors and is the world's leading international motorcycle industry show in terms of trade and high-mileage consumer visitors. Being staged in Hall 10, the 'Custom Hall' in which the Cologne Custom Cup (an AMD World Championship program affiliate event) has been staged since 2008, the four day consumer attendance, and dedicated Media and Trade visitor day attendances, are likely to see the highest attendance that the AMD World Championship has ever secured, and in all probability the largest crowd to ever see a custom bike building competition, of any kind, anywhere. At the time of writing the advance entry list had exceeded expectations for this first staging of the Championship at INTERMOT. With six weeks still to go, 55 builders have entered some 70 bikes, and as befits a truly international competition, these builders are drawn from 20 different countries - which also reinforces INTERMOT's reputation as the "most international" of industry shows. Bad Old Days?" I hear you ask. "You mean the bad old dayswhen we saw annual double digit business growth and salesflowed like milk and honey? They were 'Bad' days?"

Well, yes they were. Unsustainable growth is always bad growth, regardlessof the percentages involved, and our case, and that of many other discretionaryleisure Dollar spend industries, the growth we "endured" to 2006 wasunsustainable on so many levels.

This isn't new news of course, and I am far from the only person to point tosuch blindingly obvious common sense - but hindsight is a tricky lens throughwhich to judge the past, and at the time we here at AMD were among the onlymedia types (especially media types) to be preaching cautionabout where the market was headed.

In a media industry whose independence is compromised bynot wanting to burn the hype that pays the bills, the motorcyclepress and wider financial and news media were almostcompletely silent in terms of there ever conceivably being therisk that the party could come to an abrupt end.

It was "King's Clothes" syndrome - but the parents camehome unexpectedly early, and my, how the party crashed, andhow naked everybody looked!

What is happening to us now, the growth we areenjoying rather than enduring, just needs to be judged realistically andseen for what it is. At this time the growth in the motorcycle industry,

most but not all parts of the industry, and most but not all parts of the world, iscertainly modest by historic percentage standards, and definitely still fragile interms of macro-economic terms.

Yeah, yeah - I hear what you're saying - "Bradley is on his soap box again, turning out all the same words but just in a different order!" Well, given that weare emerging into an era in which our businesses are being conducted in anenvironment in which there certainly is a very "different order of things"informing market growth, too right, I am on my soap box again!

I think having been the lone siren voice counselling impending doom whenthe milk and honey flowed kind of buys me that right!

Here is a startling fact - at present the rate of growth in new motorcycle sales, including at Harley and Polaris, and even in the modest low single digit growthmany (but far from all) of our businesses are enjoying, is out-stripping widereconomic growth.

Now sure there is "low hanging fruit" as delayed spending starts to find itsway into dealership cash registers, but while the wider economic forecasts remain

as marginal as they still are, nobody had better bet the farm on growth yet!Low single digit returns on investment may not be sexy, but they are

sustainable and, in truth, are the natural economic order of things, especially fora niche market that depends on subjectivity rather than need.

Nobody 'needs' a custom air-cleaner as such, nobody 'needs' to be able togo fast enough to be a ticket magnet - but 'needs' and 'want' have neverbeen easy bed-fellows. While the former is definable, the latter is the

product of an abstraction that can be nurtured, sure, but never again should ourindustry allow itself to get into a position of dependency on it.

That the 'custom' motorcycle market will continue to take a gradually largerslice of overall motorcycle sales is apparent - the emerging competition between

Harley-Davidson and Polaris Industries' Victory and IndianMotorcycle offerings will do much to galvanize consumers in theyears ahead, and the likes of the Japanese big four, but above allthe opportunities that the 'custom' motorcycle market may offer,is not going unnoticed by the likes of Triumph, BMW and Ducati.

Competition between OEs will stimulate growth, even if it isby taking sales from other sectors of the motorcycle riding andownership experience.

However, how much of that growth will trickle down into theaftermarket, and in what timescale, remains to be seen. Some will, for sure - indeed some already is, but the 21st century motorcycle

manufacturer looks to its own accessory programs as a primary income (andabove all profits) source, and no longer treats it as icing on the cake.

So the competition that aftermarket parts designers and manufacturers nowface is way different to the near vacuum that informed the explosion that startedin the late eighties, and started, don't anyone forget, in a riding environment thattwenty years earlier had been characterized by owners who were rebellingagainst extraneous accessories, clutter and weight on their rides-of-choice.

Ours always has been an industry defined by paradox, and it will need to beso again in the future if 'want' is to again emerge as being as bankable as theneed for staples has been - a need that has been our sustenance since the marketpeaked in 2006, and one that nobody should again allow themselves to bediverted from, or else the farm could well end up on the block again.

'don't bet the farm ongrowth yet'

New season promises much, but don'tlook for a return to the "bad old days"

AEROMACH produces a widerange of parts and accessoriesfor Victory motorcycles, andwhen Polaris publicly releasednew Indian motorcycles,Aeromach owner Paul Aikenacquired a Chief Classic with aview to accessorizing it. “The first thing I noticed on thetest ride of the new bike wasthe lack of a heel shift lever,”said Aiken, “and many riders, especially those coming offHarley-Davidsons, wereaccustomed to shifting upthrough the gears with theirheel.” This oversight on Indian’s partled to Aiken developing a heelshifter for Indian motorcycles.Demand was so high for thepart that the delivery timestretched to six weeks. To meetthe demand, a second CNCmilling machine was added toproduce the parts more quickly.Once the parts are machinedthey are hand- polished andchrome plated, adding fourweeks to the production time.“We had a waiting list of over150 heel shifters at one point,

and we were running themachines all day long just tomeet the demand. It tookIndian Motorcycles until Augustof this year to release theirversion of the shift lever, butdemand for the Aeromachversion remains high. Ours fitsthe floorboard better andallows riders more room tomove their feet around on thefloorboards. PLATINUM Air Suspension wasfounded by Oscar Sanchezwhen he began working on acustom bike project anddeveloped his own air ride

system. Others saw the work he’d doneon his bike and the improved ride, andasked him to work on their bikes too.So in 2004 Oscar went into business full-time building his air ride systems underthe name of Platinum Air Suspension.

As the company grew Oscar employed Mike Ferris totake care of sales and assembly, in effect doublingthe workforce, and when in 2007 the opportunity tobuy the business became available, Mike took thestep of becoming the owner rather than anemployee. Under Mike’s control Platinum AirSuspension moved from Santa Fe Springs, addedstaff, and is now turning over almost a million dollarsa year as it services 600 dealers worldwide withfitment options that cover not only H-D but alsoVictory, Indian and Boss Hoss, and also street andcustom applications.

One of the company’s bestselling packages is its‘Bleed Feed’ system, with which the rider can controlboth ride height and rebound. The system iscontrolled by positive pressure at all times and caneasily be adjusted at the flip of a switch for completecomfort for the rider’s weight or road conditions. The

Bleed Feed system includes air cylinders machinedfrom 6061 T-6 billet aluminum, air-control valve,DOT- approved 1⁄4in line and fitting, plus switchharness, air compressor, hardware and line cutter.

The Bleed Feed is not the only system in thePlatinum Air Suspension line-up and also offers theSimple system, which features the same high level ofcomponentry as the Bleed Feed, but does not offerrebound control. However, users are still able to

Today it is common to find air suspensionsystems on motorcycles, even as OEMequipment, but one of the forerunners inthe market is Platinum Air Suspension.AMD takes a closer look at the Fullerton,California based business to discovermore about the company’s history andproduct development

control the ride height through pump and releasepressure. The most popular of the Bleed Feed kits isthe unit designed for use on FL Bagger models, andlike with all of Platinum’s products, there is a widechoice of finishes on the shocks. As standard there isthe option of chrome, polished, powder coated orsatin finishes, and by special request powder coatingin the specific color choice of the customer.

It could be argued that the wide range of choicesmade available by Mike for his customers is one ofthe reasons that he has been able to grow his market.Today Platinum Air Suspension makes 80 percent ofits sales to the domestic and Canadian markets, withthe balance being made up with exports with aparticular emphasis on Australia, Germany andFrance, though Mike is keen to explore new marketsand offers dealer direct sales, and while it has anonline store the company prefers to retail via itsdealers.

Dealers are then able to benefit from the constantproduct development undertaken by Mike and histeam at the manufacturing plant in Fullerton,California. While the business constantly monitorsthe changes made to bike models year-on-year bymanufacturers in order to take in changes toschematics, specifications and even the necessaryspace for the onboard compressors, Platinum alsooffers a custom build service for when a stockapplication is not available or applicable.

It is not just individual customers that have takenadvantage of Platinum Air Suspension’s customprogram. Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation has tried variousair ride systems over the years before it tried aPlatinum kit. The team at Bagger Nation was soimpressed with the system it received from Platinumthat it now has its ‘Lay’d Out’ kits made specifically

for it by Platinum. The exclusive design for BaggerNation is the lowest traveling shock made by thecompany, and goes from 12.25in extended to 9.75indropped, offering 2-1⁄2in of travel.

It is development work such as this that drivesPlatinum Air Suspension and has done for more than10 years, which gives an insight into how thecompany is set to continue to grow in the future asit expands its product line and international markets.

Latest parts selectionfrom W&WW&W Cycles is continuing to expand its range ofreproduction parts for older model Harley-Davidsonsunder its Cannonball label. The latest re-introductionis a lock that was originally offered as an accessoryin the ’20s and ‘30s. Permanently mounted to thebike’s forks, the stainless steel bar swivels from itshome position and through the wheel and is thenlocked in place preventing the wheel from turning. Two versions of the lock are available to fit OEMSpringer forks and W&W Springer forks.

The old school parts theme continues at W&WCycle with the stocking of the Vintage Custom LEDhinged mini taillight. Based on the design of factorytaillights again from the ‘20s and ‘30s it has a hingebetween the lamp body and license plate bracket forangle adjustment. Rather than using a conventionalfilament bulb, the taillight houses a 12v LED for bothstoplight and license plate illumination, and is E4approved.

From the Biltwell line of products W&W Cycles isnow carrying the company’s Grenade and Javelinmufflers. Both designs are available in black powdercoat or chrome, TIG welded and supplied with aremovable perforated steel baffle. One of the more up-to-date products stocked byW&W Cycles is the range of RSD products whichincludes a line of mid-controls. When installed thecontrols move the rider’s feet 1in up and 1in back, while also being 1-1/2in narrower than the OEMcontrols for improved cornering clearance. MOTORCYCLE Storehouse is continuing to expandits product line, and among the latest additions to itsrange is the Arlen Ness windshield trim for useon 2014 Touring models. The trim pieces, which coverthe transition of the screen to the fairing, areavailable in a selection of styles (Beveled, Deep Cutand Slot Track), and in a choice of chrome or blackmachined anodized aluminum. For riders looking to add to the Old School look of

their bikes, Motorcycle Storehouse is offering clothcovered wiring. A reproduction of the wiring thatwas once used, it is suitable for restorations orcustom builds. The wiring is available in four colors,black/white, red/white, green/white andyellow/white, and all are sold in a 25ft roll. The singlewires have a 3mm outside diameter with a 1.5mmdiameter/1.8mm² copper wiring strand(approximately 18-gauge), making this wiringsuitable for virtually all on-bike applications, with theexception of electric starters. The Old School parts selection at Motorcycle

Storehouse continues with its stocking ofPerformance Machine’s Universal Vintagebrake calipers. The calipers, in chrome, plain clearanodized or black anodized with a contrast cutmachined finish, have the look of a classic two-pistondesign, but are in fact a four-piston unit. The 'Vintage Ribs', as part of the styling of the

caliper body, are designed as reinforcing ribs todecrease flexing, improving brake feel, giving bettercontrol and to aid cooling. The bodies, or caliperhalves, are CNC machined from one-piece billet bar,and have a design that is symmetrical and cantherefore be used left, right, front or rear, and withthe appropriate separately available bracket for ‘84-‘99 or ‘00-‘14 H-D models. Moving away from retro-inspired parts,

Motorcycle Storehouse has the new Super Radius2-into-2 exhaust system from Vance & Hines.Like the company’s Big Radius pipes, this systemfeatures 220-degree, 2-1⁄2in diameter plasma cutheat shields to help prevent visible blueing. The keydifference with this exhaust is a larger mufflerdesigned to give lower sound levels with bigger,103ci up, engines and the use of a special PowerChamber which then connects front and rear headpipes to maximize low-end power. The baffle is not removable, but it does have an

insert that can be installed or removed to tune thetone of the bike. The headers come with the new Vance & Hines

'Super Bung' design, which allows use of the exhauston models with 18mm, 12mm or even without O2sensors. Available for most Softail, Dyna and Touring

The injected molded ABS angled bags have a 5instretch compared to stock, which allows them tocompletely cover the bike’s mufflers. While the bagshave cut-outs for dual exhaust applications, block offplugs are available separately for customapplications with single exhaust or no exhaust exits.

The bags are sold singularly and require both leftand right bag ordering.

It is not just bodywork that can be upgraded withparts from the Arlen Ness catalog, the company alsohas a range of brake upgrades including Big Brakefloating rotor kits. The over-sized rotors are said tooffer a minimum of 30 percent more stopping powerthan factory sized rotors. The kits, which utilize thefactory brake caliper and brake hose, are offered with

Zodiac expandsproduct rangeZODIAC has expanded its product range with a diverseselection of new products, and first among them arethe Eco-Line extended hard saddlebags. Eco-line manufactures its bags from ABS plastic and

makes them 4in deeper than stock, with the extensioncovering the bike’s exhaust mufflers. The bags, whichcan be used as replacement for damaged stock bags, fit all ’92 – ‘13 hard luggage equipped FLH and FLTseries Touring models, and can also be used on mostSoftail models when paired with Zodiac's separatelyavailable saddle bag bracket kit. With the Adjure LED H4-L30W hi/low LED bulb

Zodiac is making it easier for riders to upgrade to LEDlighting from halogen lighting. The Cree type LEDSused in the Adjure kit are said to give much brighterwhite light than a normal H4 bulb and use only 27Wof power compared to 55W-60W for a conventionalhalogen bulb. The LED bulb fits headlight units thatuse a H4 bulbs with the P43t base with three tabs, and does not fit headlight units with a completelyround P45 base. Zodiac now also has Goodridge Sniper 2 ‘Build

Your Own’ brake lines available. The systemfeatures PC coated PTFE inner lined, stainless steelbraided, micro bore hose and a choice of chrome orblack fittings. Sniper 2 brake lines have an outerdiameter as little as 0.16in, making them suitable forrouting brake and clutch lines through concealedareas such as forks, frames and handlebars. Goodridge Sniper 2 brake line is available in braided

stainless, clear coated braided stainless, carbon lookcovered braided stainless and ‘Pure black’ covered

braided stainless. Once the line has been cut to lengthit can be installed using Sniper 2 adaptors, banjo eyesand straight fittings.Zodiac’s own Tomahawk 1in handlebars are

made to be used on Touring models, specifically ’86-’07 FLHT and FLHX models. The bars can also be usedon ’08 and later bikes if the right side is trimmed by13mm to allow the fitting of throttle-by-wirecontrols. Offered in a choice of black or chrome, thebars, which are slotted for internal wiring, measure36in wide, with a center width of 15-1⁄4in, 10in rise, and 6-5⁄8in pullback.Replacement oil pumps for Twin Cam models

Samson Decibel Killer mufflersSAMSON has designed its new Decibel Killermufflers to allow maximum flow throughthe system to maintain the bike’s peakperformance with reduced heat for therider. The name comes from the fact thatthe mufflers produce a mild 84 dB at idle, which is just above stock sound level. At the

same time there are claimed power andtorque increases of around 20 percent. Offered in chrome or ‘Sinister’ black ceramic

finishes, the mufflers fit ’95-’13 Dresser andRoad King models, and include mountinghardware and removable baffles.

ACCEL adds StealthSuperCoils for SportsterACCEL has increased its Stealth SuperCoils productline with the inclusion of an option for use on Harley-Davidson Sportsters ‘07-‘14.

First introduced in late ‘13 for H-D Twin Camengines, ACCEL’s Stealth SuperCoils are claimed toprovide quicker engine starting and improved throttleresponse, while hiding all ignition wiring in the headof the self-contained coil pack, eliminating the needfor spark plug wires and creating a clean, custom look.

Each SuperCoil mounts directly to the spark plugand features a cross-functional cast aluminum coverthat also acts as a heat sink, pulling heataway from the cylinder heads.

In addition to the flat black andnatural aluminum finishes, theSportster Stealth SuperCoils areoffered in flat black with polishedaluminum edges.

“The Twin Cam Harley Stealth SuperCoils proved tobe popular. In response to increased demand, we’veexpanded our product applications, and the nextlogical step was to offer them for Sportster owners,”said Jason Ellison, Business Unit Manager for theACCEL Powersports division. “Sportster owners cannow experience the clean look and improvedperformance that the ACCEL Stealth Supercoilsprovide.”

As with other Stealth SuperCoil applications,ACCEL’s system requires no cutting or splicing of the

factory wiring harness. The useof Delphi connectors meansinstallation is a simple plug and

play affair. The coil itself boasts a fasterrise time and higher voltage than the traditionalsystem, meaning the plugs receive maximum sparkenergy and perform even better. As with all ACCELSuperCoils, the Stealth SuperCoils are covered byACCEL’s limited lifetime warranty.

THE Czech Republic may not be well knownas the home of custom bike builders, butthat doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Onecustom bike builder, who is doing his best tolet the world know what he and hiscountrymen are capable of creating, is TomasTurner, the owner of TMT Moto and builderof T5, the bike that took second place in theRetro Modified class at the 2013 WorldChampionship of Custom Bike Building.

Tomas’ starting point for the build was a ’75FLH. However, one of the bikes onTomas’ ultimate wish list is aBrough Superior

SS100, and so he set about making the humbleShovelhead reminiscent of his dream bike. Given thatthe Brough is a rigid and the Shovel had a swingarmand shock, the first step was to cut most of the frameoff behind the seat post, only leaving the gearboxmounts. The missing parts were then replaced with acustom rigid set-up fabricated in the TMT Motoworkshop. Naturally the stock telescopic front endwith its headlamp nacelle wouldn’t work given thelook Tomas was going for, and his solution was totake it all off and replace it with a one-off Girder

fork. Unlike regular Girder forks, Tomas’design moves the springs at their anchorpoint just below the bars and the lower

Among custom builders thehumble Shovelhead is apopular starting point forbuilds and can be seen inevery type of machine frommild to wild. It was a ’75Shovelhead that providedthe starting point for TomasTurner’s entry into theRetro Modified class at the2013 World Championshipand his eventual secondplace in the class

mount on the front edge of the lower pivot arms. Onhis forks the springs mount mid-way down the forklegs and then the top of them attaches just under thelower pivot. The fork’s action is then controlled byfriction dampers mounted outside the lower pivots.

To further the ‘30s styling of the bike that Tomaswas creating he built up a pair of 21in spokedwheels, which are shod front and rear with 3in Avonribbed tires that once again add to the old look ofthe bike. When it came to fitting brakes to the wheelsTomas left the front wheel bare and then added acombined rotor and sprocket to the rear wheel. Thisis gripped by a Performance Machine caliper that iscleverly hidden by a race number board on the left ofthe bike.

With the rolling chassis complete the Shovelheadmotor was rebuilt with the only changes being to theinduction and exhaust. The motor now breathes inthrough an SU carb and out again via a set ofstainless steel shotgun pipes, crafted by Tomas.Behind the engine the stock four-speed kickertransmission is used with power being passed by asimple open belt drive. The actual shifts are made viaa suicide shift and a H-D heel and toe shifterconverted to work as a clutch pedal. That pedalassembly is matched by the vintage Harleyfloorboards. The only other controls on the bike arethe internal throttle and a single lever on the ‘bars for

the rear brake. One of the key visual aspects of the Brough’s

design is the long streamlined gas tank, and in orderto create a facsimile of this Tomas modified a ‘50sValor Fydrant fire extinguisher. It now has a cut-outto allow it to sit low on the bike’s frame while stillclearing the engine’s rocker boxes. The rest of thebodywork was then hand-crafted by Tomas includingthe oil tank and rear fender. The whole package wasthen handed over to Robert Ramik and Karel Sima, who took care of the paintwork. The finishing touchwas then the addition of a Lepper leather bicyclesaddle for a true ‘30s look.

The combination of unusual parts, such as the fireextinguisher tank, and popular choices like theShovelhead motor, certainly proved to be a winningcombination for Tomas as he was just a handful shortof votes in order to take the top place in the Retro

Modified class. It will be interesting to see howmissing out on the top prize by such a narrowmargin is a motivator for him to return to theChampionship and try for class honors.

No motorplate is used with the open belt primary drive tohelp create a vintage look on the bike, which is furtherenhanced with the use of early H-D floorboards

The Girder fork Tomas created for T5is unusual in that it locates the coilsprings below the lower pivot, ratherthan the more conventional pointbetween the upper and lower pivots

One of the most unusualfeatures on T5 is the use aheavily modified ‘50s ValorFydrant fire extinguisher tocreate the look of a BroughSuperior SS100 gas tank

A Lepper leather saddle, originallyintended for use on a bicycle, helps togive T5 a definite ’30s race bike look
