THE LOGO OF MERCY EXPLAINED

Merciful like the Father, (Lk 6, 36) is the theme of the year of Mercy. The logo,

designed by Fr.Marko I. Rupnik sj, brings out an indepth theme of mercy. The

logo has been conceived in such a way that the Good Shepherd touches

humanity’s flesh so deeply and with such love so as to bring about a radical

change. One unique feature of the logo is that after having raised humanity unto

his shoulders in a gesture which demonstrates extreme mercy, the eyes of the

Good Shepherd and those of Adam become united so that Christs sees through

the eyes of Adam, and Adam sees through the eyes of Christ. Every man and

woman thus discovers in Christ, the new Adam, his or her own humanity and the

future yet to come, contemplating in the eyes of Christ the love of the Father.

The scene is set within an almond, a symbol very dear to the early and medieval

iconography, which underlines the presence of the two natures of Christ the

divine and the human. The three concentric ovals, progressively lighter in

colour which extend towards the outer edge, suggests the dynamics by which

Christ carries humanity out of the night of sin and death. The obscure colour

suggests that the love of the Father, who forgives all, can penetrate even the

most profound darkness in which the sinful persons finds himself imprisoned.

A Way of Faith, Not FeelingWriting about this Way for my sister Marie, and teaching it to the novices under my care, I certainly am not on a spiritual high. It feels like I am in a dark tunnel. Only faith keeps me going, and the knowledge that there are many people beyond the convent walls who share this sense of life’s futility. My Way isn’t about feeling good, it’s about believing in the words of Jesus and putting them into practice no matter what. Even though I continue to pray I don’t get a lot of consolation in my prayer. It’s more that i am conscious of God leading me in a hidden manner. Even books don’t help, as in my present state of bad health I find concentration hard. However, sometimes a word or a sentence will stay with me, such as this one: ‘Are you looking for someone to give you guidance? Read the book of like which contains the whole science of loving.’ That touches a nerve! It’s the science of loving that energises me. Only love makes us what God wants us to be. Only those who realise that they are loved can respond and become the person that they really are deep down. God, through love, has made each one of us both lovable and desirable. So the ability to respond to that love is the only thing I really want.But how shall I come by this science of love? Do I need to fret and worry about it? No. Jesus has shown me that it’s not a matter of hard work and gritting my teeth in the face of achieving the impossible. When people are trying too hard they forget how to live!A Way Rooted in ConfidenceMy trust in God has nothing to do with the fact that I am good. My trust springs from faith in the goodness and mercy of God that it is total and unconditional. God has loved me first. God’s love is not a reward for my good behaviour. God loves me simply because God loves me as a mother loves all her children. God doesn’t have to divide love, it gets multiplied instead. There is plenty for everyone, even, and perhaps most especially, for the smallest. I rejoice to be little, then, because only little children and those who are like them will be admitted to the feast of heaven.Some time ago I was struck by these words in the Book of Proverbs:`Let whoever is a very little one come to me’ (Pr.9:4). I found these words in a handwritten copy of Old Testament passages which my sister Celine brought into the convent and I perused them eagerly. I didn’t have a full Bible at my disposal so I read whatever extracts I could find with an open heart and mind, and discovered that the God depicted there was a loving and merciful God, in the Old Testament as much as in the New-ready to forgive those who are little and humble, the ‘nobodies’ of this world, those who trust in God and have no confidence in themselves.Isaiah the prophet speaks to God tending his flock like a shepherd, carrying the lambs in his bosom (Is.40:11). God is not only a loving father but the tenderest of mothers, consoling us like a mother caressing her child, fondling us upon her lap, holding us against her breast (Is.66: 12-13). When I discover passages like this I can only keep silent, weeping tears of love and gratitude. God is far beyond all I could hope for in being merciful towards the weak. I tell you this so that you too may draw hope and comfort from Scripture which is God’s word to us, true and reliable. If someone like me, a young nun with scarcely and education and of no importance whatever in the corridors of power in Church or State, can resonate with what God says, then there’s hope for everyone. Take my advice-aim high and don’t wallow in self-pity and discouragement. That limits your range of vision and does you no good in the long run. Grace comes to the rescue if we only ask for it, and enables us to do what has to be done if we are resolved to belong wholly to God. Of course I often fail to live up to what I know deep down is true; I’m far from being a perfect specimen of a human being. Yet I know that God is speaking to me inwardly in some strange way, giving me hope and healing as I journey on. So don’t think holiness isn’t for you. Holiness is for everyone without exception. Holiness doesn’t mean doing great things for God and being ‘perfect’ in everything. God isn’t asking anyone for great achievement, only for gratitude and self-surrender. Recite the psalms in the course of the Divine Office, using such words as:I will not accept a bull from your house, or goats from your folds, For every wild animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the air, and all that moves in the field is mine. If I were hungry I would not tell you, for I own the world and all that is in it. Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High.(Ps 50:9-14 NRSV)You see. God isn’t asking us for material gifts or the fulfilling of legal obligations. Neither is God asking for spiritual or intellectual achievements. God only asks us for love, and that’s something that everyone is capable of giving and receiving.

When God commanded and said “let there be light” and there was light who further separated the light from the darkness and named them Day and

Night. God created domes to control the water and kept it in two separate places which he named as sky and the water below the sky came together and

land appeared which he named as Earth and the water which had come Together he Named Sea God was pleased with what he saw and created the universe and finally God created man and made men rule and respect the nature In the past the small communities came to gather and worked to build healthy atmosphere free from pollution by planting trees which protected them from many diseases.. They lived in houses made from palm leaves and different kinds of plants which were environment friendly, free from dust and pollution. Families took care about their surrounding and they would not scatter the garbage everywhere. Every family would collect and dispose the same in a healthy way either by digging a small hole or burnt the same, of course there were no plastic bags but people would use paper or cloth bags. In this way they took care of Mother Earth.Today our families have become highly sophisticated and everyone wants their work to be done fast and they do not have time to take care of our mother nature. So easiest thing one can do is to collect their garbage in a plastic bag and throw it on the road or else in their neighbours compound. We want to use vehicles which and other gadgets which emits poisonous gases which depletes the ozone layer causing dreadful diseases. In the past, they also planted trees and plants to protect the soil from erosion, mangroves to protect the area from floods and it was also a place where different species of fish breed. But today what are we doing?Our parents play an important role in educating their children hey are the teacher and mentor in moulding the children and bringing them up They must try to inculcate in their children the love and respect for the environment by their own example. The parents teach their children to keep their surroundings clean and not to scatter the garbage everywhere and stress the importance of the trees and plants and encourage their children to grow more trees .Make them work in the garden, encourage kitchen gardening. In this way we will be able to keep ourselves healthy and free from pollution. They should also be motivated to correct the offender .Let us try to diminish our village from pollution.
