A NEWSLETTER FROM THE VOLUNTEER SERVICES DEPARTMENT January, February, March 2012
DIRECTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Ambassadors, Supervisors and Friends of Ambassadors:
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of our Cleveland Clinic Ambassadors!
In February 1992, Volunteer Services hosted its first orientation for Ambassadors on main campus. By the end of that year, 202 volunteers contributed 17,688 hours. Now, let’s fast forward to 2011! Last year, 1,728 volunteers contributed 158,467 hours. In the early years, volunteers primarily served by staffing information desks, delivering patient mail, offering moral support as Mended Hearts volunteers and religious support as Pastoral Care volunteers. Since then, requests for volunteers have increased dramatically. In 2011, volunteers were placed in 202 areas on main campus and at ten Family Health Centers. While continuing to maintain traditional hospital volunteer assignments, like way-finding and support group patient visits, our department also has been committed to developing inno-vative opportunities to enrich the quality of our program. Included among these are our weekly High Tea at the Taussig Cancer Center, Greeter Dog program, tours of main campus and our Summer Junior Ambassador Program. We are very proud of the growth of our department, the quality of our volunteers and their priceless contributions of time and talent.
Ambassadors
MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to provide quality, productive and efficient volunteer service. Ambassadors accomplish this by contributing to the comfort of pa-tients and their families through com-passionate support. The volunteers’ lives are enriched and enhanced with meaningful assignments, learning ex-periences and skill development. Vol-unteers serve as Ambassadors to the community by promoting the organiza-tion’s mission.
VISION STATEMENT Cleveland Clinic’s Volunteer Services Department will distinguish itself locally, regionally and nationally through its dedication to the achieve-ment of World Class status by harmo-nizing the needs of the Enterprise with the interests of its Ambassadors, while providing quality services in the areas of patient care, research and educa-tion.
Special appreciation is extended to the following volunteers who helped launch our program in 1992 and continue to volunteer with us today.
Herb Adelstein, Evelyn Boyd, Julia Cassell, Carolyn Fazio, Marge Gillota, Mary Fratianne, Carol Hammer, Elsie Harvan, Marian Knotek, Robert Knotek, Alexandra Razavi, Willard Talley, Dan Volper
The loyalty of these individuals is inspiring to all of us. We thank them for dedicating 20 years of volunteer service to Cleveland Clinic patients, families and employees and wish them a very Happy Anniversary! We look forward to celebrating the achievements of the past 20 years with all of you during National Volunteer Week (April 16-20) and at our annual Thanks for Giving recognition event on November 16th. On a final note, I want to add that, as many of you know, our department joined the Office of Patient Experience on November 1, 2011. The mis-sion of OPE is to ensure care that is consistently patient-centered by partnering with caregivers to exceed the expectations of patients and families. This is an admirable statement of purpose to which we are con-fident our volunteers will contribute. Our goal in 2012 is to focus on in-creasing volunteer interaction with patients and designing creative as-signments that will enhance the patient experience. This is an exciting challenge that promises to enrich the quality of services we provide and the sense of satisfaction our volunteers derive from helping others. The year ahead will be rewarding with several new initiatives for our Am-bassadors including monthly Health Talks by prominent Cleveland Clinic physicians, introduction of a Volunteer Advisory Council and formation of a Volunteer Life Member Society. We look forward to our continued as-sociation and another productive and successful year.
Happy Spring and Happy 20th Anniversary!
Sincerely, Elizabeth A. Stein, MPA, CAVS Director, Volunteer Services Department

Profile and Volunteer Memories of a Cleveland Clinic Professional Name: Christine Moravec, Ph.D. Department: Associate Staff in Cardiovascular Medicine Interview by: Elizabeth Stein Interview Date: March 15, 2012 What is your title? Describe your position at Cleveland Clinic. Associate Staff in Cardiovascular Medicine. I run a research lab and supervise six to eight employees. We study human heart failure. We have a traditional science lab and study patient tissue using basic science techniques. How many years have you been employed at the Cleveland Clinic? 27 years Education: As an undergraduate I majored in Religious Studies at John Carroll University. I continued at John Carroll and earned a Masters in Biology. My Ph.D. is in Regulatory Biology from Cleveland State University. The research I did for my disser-tation was based on work done at Cleveland Clinic. What is the most challenging part of your job? The biggest challenge is securing funding for research. Even though we might have an interesting question, we have to convince a funding agency that it is interesting enough for the agency to fund. What do you consider to be your best assets? I am fair and open minded. I am also generally friendly to everyone. What is your favorite childhood memory? I grew up in Los Angeles, and I most enjoyed hiking with my family in the mountains of Griffith Park – near Hollywood. And Disneyland, of course – twice a year!! If you could be any person in history, who would you be, and why? Walt Disney. He had an idea, no one really supported him, but he went for it anyway. And look what we got out of it! If he had given up when everyone else thought he was crazy, there would be no Disney today. I very much admire that spirit and that belief in one’s own ideas, enough to keep go-ing when others are not behind you. What is your favorite movie? The Devil Wears Prada or maybe Julie and Julia – I love both What are your hobbies/favorite past times? I like to read – especially mysteries – and to travel.
How do people describe you? I think they would say I am some-one who is very accommodating, but that I take on too much and have a hard time saying “no.” What was your favorite subject in high school? German. I took five years of Ger-man along with AP coursework. Actually, I was selected by the American Association of Teachers of German as the number one German Student in the State of Ohio, and I was awarded a free trip to Germany. In college my favorite courses were in Religion, my major. What snack food do you like best? Pita bread and hummus. Describe your first experience as a volunteer? I volunteered two days a week after school and all day Satur-days at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital while I was in high school. I was able to walk to the hospital because we lived about three blocks away. It was very exciting. First we had an orientation to learn about what we could do with the pa-tients. We were called candy stripers, and we wore red and white uniforms. Our duties included making beds, emptying bed pans, feeding and reading to patients and delivering mail and flowers to them. Sometimes we held the babies in the maternity ward. We also took bodies to the morgue. I re-member the first time this happened. A nurse told my friend Christina and me that the patient had died and had to be taken to the morgue, so we just did it! The patient was on a gurney and covered with a sheet. It was also interesting be-cause sometimes there were movie stars in the hospital like Spencer Tracy and Diana Ross. There would be lots of secu-rity around because of them. It was exciting!
Did volunteering have any impact on your ultimate career choice? Although it didn’t really impact my decision to go into a medi-cal field, it did have an impact on my wish to pursue a ca-reer in which I could help people. What is your impression of our Cleveland Clinic Ambassadors? I think they are wonderful! I have encountered many of them in the halls. I have worked a lot with the teen volunteers who are doing special projects, and I enjoy that. I am most im-pressed with the adult volunteers and the way they are so kind and want to help patients by giving them directions, an-swering questions and escorting them to their destinations. The volunteers are extremely friendly, like the ones on the Skyway who always say “Good Morning Doctor.” I think the volunteers really make a big difference at Cleveland Clinic.

Ambassadors Help Children Recycle 35,586 Greeting Cards By: Amy Mittinger, Volunteer The ‘Recycled Card Program’ is back again! The mission to recycle and reuse greeting
cards originated at the St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. This nonprofit organization, with
headquarters in Boulder City, Nevada, is committed to caring for abused and neglected
children.
In the early 1970s, its Kids’ Corporation program embarked on a mission to teach children
entrepreneurship skills. The children collected used greeting cards, and kept the front of
each card to recycle and attach unused, recycled paper as the card’s back. They then sold
the “new” cards in packs of 10 for $10 for all occasions, year-round. The program has
since grown tremendously, and now people throughout the world continue sending used
cards to the Recycled Card Program’s headquarters.
Cleveland Clinic Ambassadors began partnering with the Office for a Healthy Environment
to participate in this program in 2009. In 2011-2012 volunteers, Trudy and Marty Hood,
and Carol Siverd counted, sorted, and boxed 35,586 donated cards from December 23rd
through February 2nd. We thank the generous employees system-wide who participated in
this program. Their contributions are yet another example of the generous spirit of Cleve-
land Clinic Caregivers!

Richard E. Jacobs Health Center Attracts New Volunteers By: Maureen Duffy, Coordinator Cleveland Clinic’s Family Health and Surgery Center has expanded once again and now includes the Richard E. Jacobs Health Center in Avon. Located at 33100 Cleveland Clinic Boulevard, the 190,000 square foot facility made its grand opening on December 12, 2011. Like all of the Cleveland Clinic Family Health Centers, this facility provides primary care, along with many medical, surgical and imaging specialties, during convenient day, evening and weekend hours. Up-to-the minute technology, equipment and expansive resources provide more than 30 specialty services, including top-ranked cardiac care, the latest imaging tech-niques and a first-rate physical therapy center, complete with two pools for aquatic treatments. Interest from the community has been outstanding. The public open house, held on Saturday, December 3rd, drew almost 5,000 attendees! Currently, the volunteers listed below are assigned to the Richard E. Jacobs Health Center. These very dedicated Ambassadors provide much-needed assistance by offering directions at the main entrance, providing wheelchair transport and assisting patients in Physical Therapy. This beautiful new setting is a terrific opportunity for volunteers to contribute to a positive pa-tient experience.

AMBASSADOR OF THE MONTH – JANUARY Barbara Kolezynski By: Amy Mittinger, Volunteer Congratulations to Barbara Kolezynski, the January 2012 Ambassador of the Month. Barbara has accumulated 263 hours of service since she began volunteering at Cleveland Clinic’s Ronald McDonald Family Room in May 2010. Barbara is a Cleveland native, with two daughters and five grandchildren living in Cincinnati and Madison, Wisconsin. The retired pharmacy sales representative of fif-teen years said she initially visited the Clinic as part of her work routine. When asked why she re-turned to the campus to volunteer, she said it keeps her appreciative of the fortunes life has given her. “It was a way to give back in appreciation for my healthy grandchildren.” Barbara volunteers as a hostess in the Ronald McDonald Family Room. She restocks supplies while providing emotional comfort to parents with hospitalized children. She said she enjoys this role of making the hospital a “home away from home” for young patients and their families. Aside from her service at Cleveland Clinic, Barbara also volunteers with the Able Program for adult literacy at Polaris and at the Strongsville Food Bank. In addition, she still finds time to read and take cooking lessons for enjoyment. We extend our deepest gratitude to Barbara for helping others through her commitment to Cleveland Clinic’s patients! AMBASSADOR OF THE MONTH – FEBRUARY Sherman Rappaport By: Amy Mittinger, Volunteer Volunteer Services is pleased to recognize Sherman Rappaport for his 1,563 total hours of service since 2001. Sherman volunteers on the 7th floor of the Sydell Miller Heart Center, where he devotes his time to speaking with patients and providing companionship and moral encouragement. He enjoys working one-on-one with patients. "Patients are apprehensive about strange things that may happen during a proce-dure, and encouraged by the empathy a volunteer can provide," Sherman said. "You leave feeling that sense of accomplishment from helping." When not volunteering, Sherman enjoys writing an online blog in his spare time. He also attends weekly classes at Kent State University to maintain his writing and computer skills. And, if these activities don’t keep Sherman busy enough, he still finds time to ski when possible during our Cleveland winters. Writing in a recent blog after a skiing journey with his son, Sherman quoted a mother and her children who he met on a snow hill while skiing. “You can’t be that old!” the mother exclaimed, upon noticing an ‘80+ ski club’ patch on his jacket. “Actually I’m 82,” he answered. “You never get too old to love it!” Sherman said he carries this philosophy with him during all his adventures. The Volunteer Services Department sends their sincere appreciation to Sherman for his service to patients during the past ten years.

AMBASSADOR OF THE MONTH – MARCH Rosalie Litt and Blossom By: Elizabeth Stein, Director Rosalie Litt and her Keeshond, Blossom, became Cleveland Clinic volunteers in October 2009. Initially they were assigned to greeting and welcoming patients and other guests in the Miller Pavilion lobby. Rosalie explains that she joined the Greeter Dog Program because she felt that Blossom would be able to comfort and cheer up the patients on their visits for their healthcare at main campus. Rosalie’s hopes have more than materialized as evidenced by the many smiles Blossom has brought to patients’ faces. The encounters with this special dog put patients at ease and help them to get off to a good start with their visits at Cleveland Clinic. Rosalie, a genuine people person who derives great satisfaction from helping others, has truly enjoyed sharing Blossom and being part of this special program. Currently, Rosalie and Blossom are greeters at the Solon Family Health Center. Once again, while at this facility she has repeatedly experienced the special effect that Blossom has on the patients and employees at this facility. Together Rosalie and Blossom have contributed 226 hours of service since joining our program. In addition to her enjoyment from volunteering, Rosalie especially likes spending time with her husband and two teenage daughters. She also enjoys traveling, exercising and reading. Our grateful appreciation is extended to this very special handler and her beloved Caring Canine for their devoted efforts to improve the patient experience at Cleveland Clinic. Thank you Rosalie and Blossom!
