The last week of October found members helping set up, work and clean up for the Halloween Carnival at the Sumner VFW, which took place on the fourth Saturday. And finally, on Halloween, they decorated the yard at the Ryan House for Street of Treats. Hi GFWC Valley Volunteers!

Have you heard that this was a record-breaking year for Come Walk With Me? 1,744 participants came together to raise more than $168,000 on October 6. That's more people and more funds raised than ever before, and we couldn't be more grateful to you for being a part of this success. Because of your team every breast cancer patient at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital will get the support and resources they need, regardless of their ability to pay. Because of you, no one will walk through this fight alone. Whether you raised $5 or $5,000, we are so thankful for the positive impact your team made on our community.

We hope to see you next year on October 5! Warmly, Michelle Sabia Event Manager

Veterans Day was originally called “Armistice Day” when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed this day in November 1919. Armistice is when warring parties agree to stop fighting and “Armistice Day” recognizes the end of World War 1 when hostilities ceased on November 11th at 11 A.M, 1918 !11th hour, of the 11th, of the 11th month".On May 13th, 1938 Armistice Day was declared a legal holiday each year. A day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace. Originally Armistice Day only honored veterans of World War.On November 11th, 1947 Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized a “National Veterans Day” parade in Birmingham, Alabama to recognize veterans of all wars. This celebration led to Congress changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954 to recognize veterans of all U.S. wars.

2018 Centennial Commemoration of the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. The theme for the 2018 Veterans Day Poster is: “The War to End All Wars” and features a poppy and barbed wire.
