Today, Maddisen is a boisterous five year old who goes to an ordinary preschool, seems to cope well and is popular with her friends. “Initially she was behind on achieving age related milestones, but we had the good fortune to join a parent support group while she was still in the Intensive Care Unit.” “During one of the sessions, they had an occupational therapist from Bloemfontein as a guest speaker. “The property has beenrezoned twice from specialresidential 900 to limited

Badat said that councilapproved the rezoning ofBhardwaj’s property twice, despite flaws in the process, identified by his attorney.“Bhardwaj readvertised forrezoning of property and councilapproved it for the second time. The decision was then taken to aTribunal. Bhardwaj was advisedto comply with the traffic report, fire requirements, storm waterand submit a site developmentplan as to his intention of how toutilize the land. This was neversubmitted to the tribunal.”

Stadium organisersmust wake upI THOUGHT I would send some feedback on the recentMichael Bublé concert, and the organisers at MosesMabhida Stadium in particular.

The food stalls left much to be desired and wereextremely slow moving.

The opening act was really good, but then the in-terval was far too long.

Bublé eventually appeared at 9pm and althoughit was not the best concert I’ve seen, and despite therain, he’s a nice guy and was entertaining.

After an enjoyable but soaking evening, weheaded home.

The parking area was absolute chaos. There were15 000 people trying to get home and not a trafficofficer was in sight. It was total gridlock.

The organisers really need to catch a wake-up.HELLA CARY

Onus is on us to bring about change

MARCH 21 was declared a public holiday to hon-our and remember those whose lives weresacrificed in the fight for social equality and

a non-racial South Africa. This national public holiday is both a glaring recap

of the tragic Sharpeville massacre and a celebrationofSouthAfrica’sprogressiveConstitution, whichgivesequal rights to all, irrespective of colour, creed or reli-gious belief.

Although during the past 20 years we haveachieved a lot in terms of human rights, more needsto be done to improve the growing inequalities in ourcountry. Each one of us can make a difference to endpoverty, unemployment, racism, classism and gen-der-based oppression.

We must stand up to our responsibility by instilling

active citizenry and finding ways and means todevelop learning programmes in order to promote ruleof law, accountability, transparency, goodgovernance, human rights and national prosperity.

Active citizenry can be a powerful way to helpordinary people take effective measures on thechallenges that are most significant to them. It canalso go a long way in building a better country for allwho live in South Africa.

The onus is on us as ordinary people to bring aboutprogressive change and to ensure that the fundamen-tal freedoms for everyone, enshrined in the UniversalDeclaration of Human Rights, be known, understoodand enjoyed by all everywhere.

Get rid ofqualification fraudTHE scourge of qualification fraud is yet again in thenews. As a retired university professor of applied eth-ics who worked very for his degrees, I have contemptfor people who buy and use so-called degrees frominstitutions that purport to be genuine universitiesbut are not, and then use them fraudulently to obtainappointments and the benefits that come with them.

There are four evils here. Firstly, serious dishonestyby the person who claims such qualifications. This isno impetuous mistake. It is planned, deliberate andsustained.

Secondly, these misdeeds are an insult to peoplewho work hard for their degrees.

The third evil is the lack of disciplinary action byemployers against those whose qualification fraud isuncovered, but who are retained in office. This leadsto a fourth evil, the encouragement given to othersthat they can get away with their own qualificationfraud.

We really must rid the country of this grossly un-ethical scourge and expose and punish those who failto take very severe action against perpetrators, in-cluding employers who don’t bother to check thesource of claimed qualifications with utmost thor-oughness.

MARTIN PROZESKYVia email

Difficulty in findingemploymentI HAVE lately discovered how exceptionally difficultit is for someone living in a township to getemployment.

My temporary gardener, who was laid off after 10years with a tool company, is now desperately tryingto find a job. He has good qualifications, is articulateand works hard, but has no computer.

As his temporary PA, I find that every job he hasapplied for either has to have scanned or e-maileddocuments faxed or you have to register online. Ofcourse, no one ever bothers to let us know whether

he is successful. What a rude country. Some institutions have no e-mail, phone or fax -

you simply have to go onto the website and do yourthing on their endless forms. I have to confess theyhave me totally confused, and I don’t know how theycan see his references or certificates as they don’t askfor them.

The temporary part for him is coming to an endas my regular employee is coming back, but I supposeI can continue the PA bit.

Could employers please be so good as to put moreuser-friendly contact details (forget the phone - theynever work), and reply to the person applying.

autofeverSupple and sweetTHE launch of the Celerio has allowed

Suzuki to cast its net wide to capturebuyers in the fierce A-AB segment.

The Celerio is available in two specifica-tions (GA and GL), two transmissionoptions (five-speed manual and new‘automated manual’ transmission), eachwith the same one-litre, three-cylinder,petrol engine.

Prices start at R109 900 for the entry-level GA to R135 900 for the range-toppingGL auto.

The Celerio has what Suzuki calls itsCICO (Curve In, Curve Out) designlanguage. It’s also the first Suzuki with thequote-marked gearbox that has full autoand manual shifts as well as creep-func-tion for dealing with traffic.

The Celerio is 3.6m long, 1.6m wide and1.5m high: that’s 100mm longer and 70mmhigher than the outgoing Alto, though it’sthe same width. Its wheelbase hasincreased by 65mm to 2.4m, those wheels

shodwith165/70R14tyreson14”steelrims- alloys optional.

The three-cylinder, 55kW/90Nm en-gine drives through a five-speed gearboxcalled by Suzuki an ‘automated manualtransmission’ - actually a CVT (constantlyvariable transmission) with five pre-se-lected ratios activated by a shifter, boldlydescribed by Suzuki as “achieved via anelectro-hydraulic actuator, making the useof a clutch pedal unnecessary”.

Or you can just let the AMT do its ownthing, unless you’re in “rush hour” traffic, when you can switch to “creep” mode - fullauto which aids in stop/start traffic.

In practice, it works like a traditionalautomatic; simply pop it into D (drive), N(neutral) or R (reverse).

Fuel Consumption is rated at a claimed4.7 litres/100km for the manual and 4.6litres/100km on the auto, with emissionsof 110g/km and 108g/km respectively.

Its turning circle, rated at 9.4m, is one

of the tightest in its class making park-ing a breeze.

Its ride is supple, suspensionsurprisingly flexible and steering inthat sweet spot of neither too lightnor too heavy.

The differences between theGA and GL are relatively minor. TheGA’s grille, exterior mirrors and doorreleases are finished in contrastingblack. It has halogen headlights, arear wiper/washer and manual exter-nal -mirrors.

The cabin has a large speedometer,multi-information display, power-assistedsteering, manual aircon with a pollen filterand lots of stowage, including a number ofbottle-holders.

Luggage capacity is 235 litres or 1034litres with the rear seats folded.

The GL variant adds a glossy black grilletreatment, chromed accents and externalmirrors finished in the body colour. It also

gains fog lights, power for theexternal mirrors and a rear-screendemister.

The black upholstery remains, thoughis bolstered with fabric inserts for the doorsand chromed door releases. Theinstrument binnacle gains a rev counter, external temperature display, four powerwindows, central locking and a gear-shiftindicator on the AMT.

The Celerio has the edge in terms ofinterior space over its competitors and, considering how flooded its market is interms of rivals, even the slightest advan-tage could make a huge difference in shift-ing units.
