57TH CONVENTIONAUGUST 26-30, 2013 - SAN DIEGO, CA
— 1 —
Brothers and Sisters,
Welcome to the 57th International Convention of the Amalgamated Transit Union in San Diego, CA. The theme of the Convention – So Much More – reflects our conviction that while we have accomplished so much since our last Convention, we have only begun to realize the full potential of our international union.
ATU delegates from local unions all over Canada and the United States are convening to address the challenges faced by Labor and the transportation industry, and chart a brighter future for transit and allied workers. We will also be offering the first-ever ATU Convention Training Academy. This Academy is part of our ongoing efforts to both broaden our outreach and provide access to relevant training and education programs.
We meet at a challenging time for our members and all workers. Billionaires and politicians who serve them have spent the last five years tearing apart the laws that enable us to bargain and have decent lives, both at work and at home. Privatization has become rampant in our industry. Management has continued to try and beat us down. Globalization has chipped away at all union jobs.
As we meet on our important business here this week we must recognize that doing things the way we always have is going to get us the same results. We need to be better prepared to fight back and do more to protect our members and our locals.
A committee of thirty ATU local presidents and the General Executive Board have been examining our structure, considering the current challenges and making recommendations for change. We are under attack, but we have a plan.
I look forward to meeting all of those gathered here this week. I know it will be an exciting and productive week and we will leave this Convention ready for the challenges that lie ahead and accomplish “So Much More.”
In solidarity,
Larry Hanley International President

Building A Better Future
Brothers & Sisters,
Welcome to the Fifty-Seventh International Convention of the Amalgamated Transit Union. You come here as delegates to represent your local at what will be one of the most momentous Conventions in our Union’s history. You will have the awesome responsibility of voting on a restructuring plan for our Union crafted after broad consultation with every part of this international union.
As all of you know by now, working people today are undergoing greater attack today than they have at any time since our Union’s founding in 1892. The challenges we are experiencing are remarkably similar to those our founders faced:
Workers are employed at jobs with no health care, sick days, or vacation days.
401(k)s have replaced pensions, but at many places there is no retirement at all.
Contract language protecting the rights of workers on the job are being replaced by company-written manuals, or, worse, the whim of managers.
Wages are sinking to the point that an increasing number of full-time workers live in poverty.
Transit operators are worked beyond the point of human endurance, and denied the basic human right of a bathroom break.
Drivers are also subject to a rising tide of violence in which they are cursed at, spit at, shoved, kicked, punched, knifed and shot on a regular basis.
Doesn’t this sound a lot more like 1892, than 2013?
I know that the reason you serve your local members, and the reason you are here at this Convention, is that you believe that these conditions are pushing workers below the level of human dignity that is the right of all people. I know that you are here because you believe that this must stop, and that you are going to be one of the people putting a stop to it.
In order to help you in that mission, we have, for the first time, fashioned ATU Convention Academy workshops that will provide you with the armor you need to do battle with the forces that want to push your members back to 1892 in your community.
I commend you for your commitment, and look forward to talking with you during this week as we lay plans for a future in which we will all have the tools and the enthusiasm necessary to accomplish so much more.
In solidarity,
Oscar Owens International Secretary-Treasurer
