The Toys for Tots Saturday (October 26th) was well attended

and as the photos show there were a goodly number of toys brought to the field. Many Club Members came early and

brought their toys, but couldn’t stick around for the “official” photo. During the photo shoot someone suggested we ought to have an airplane in the photo to make it clear this was a

RC model event. Midgorden is holding his Tiger 3 and our pho-tographer, Barb Carey, got her finger over part of the lens. No

worry Barb, I do this all the time. (Editor)

The October 16th KCRC club meeting, held at the EAA Hanger at the Lee’s Summit Air-port, was called to order by President Mike Ryken at 7:00 P.M. The other officers present were Vice-president Phil Lucido, Treasurer Bob Deskins and Secretary John Midgorden. There were 30 members present. There were also 2 guest, Chris Daoust, Keith Hinck. OFFICER REPORTS President Mike asked for a motion to approve the Sep-tember minutes as printed in the newsletter. Motion received and the minutes were ap-proved. Mike indicated that it is time for a Board meeting to establish next year’s events and discuss other topics important to the func-tioning of the Club. It was set for Tuesday the 22nd of October at Tim’s Pizza. Meeting time at 6:00 P.M. Vice-President • Phil Lucido indicated that the program for

tonight’s meeting is Club member Elmer Harris presentation on 3-D printing of model parts.

• Next month the program will be to pre-pare the Swap ’N Shop flyer for mailing. The December meeting, suggested by Jimmy C., will be sharing antidotes about Charlie Reed.

• Midgorden indicated that Jon Britt and Fred Hulen have suggested a program centered around vintage RC equipment and stories some time this winter. (After the meeting Phil indicated that the Jan-uary meeting program can be the Vin-tage RC program).

Treasurer • Bob Deskins brought the Club up-to-date

date on the status of the Club’s three in-vestment CDs. Jimmy C. recommended that we wait until after the Swap ’N’ Shop income before taking action on the CD that comes due in March.

• Bob also mentioned that the total contri-butions to Children’s Mercy Hospitals was $1,750.

Secretary

• John announced that he has the 2020 membership application available for those who wish to renew their member-ships for the new year that begins Octo-ber 1st.

• Most everyone probably received the call to action by the AMA on the FAA’s reneging on 400 foot altitude limit near controlled airspace. John Ford explained that this 400 foot limit would apply to our field.

• John explained that Steve Engelman has volunteered to try and sell the old PA sys-tem. John explained that a friend in Cali-fornia had given him good advised on a portable PA system made by Devon. Their Envoi has a built in mic and is battery powered. (Unfortunately I checked and this system is no longer available). His friend also suggested that Bose has a battery powered speaker that runs all day on a charge. The Bose speaker runs about $600.

OLD BUSINESS • As to the Swap and Shop flyer Duane

Hulen wants it to highlight that this swap meet is the largest in mid-west.

• MIdgorden explained the the AMA’s Fly-ing Site Grant program applications are due by February 1st. Mike indicated this would be one of he subjects of the Board Meeting next week.

NEW BUSINESS • Mike also reminded everyone that the

Toys for Tots fun fly is scheduled for Oct 26th. If Club members aren’t available to bring toys that day get them to either John Midgorden or Susa Calvin.

• Bod Deskins announced that he has schedule March 7th at the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Lee’s Summit for KCRC’s Annual Appreciation Dinner. The gym will be available at 5:00 P.M. for in-door electric model flying. The Dinner will begin at 6:00 P.M.

SAFETY BRIEFING SUSAN CALVIN, SAFETY OFFICER

PAGE 4

Like it or not, winter is upon us. Tempera-tures are falling, and thanks to daylight sav-ings time (which I’m not a fan of), the days are shorter. Snow is in the forecast and the potential for accidents is increasing. I’ve written about this before, but it bears re-peating. As long as we’re at home we are relatively safe (although there are hazards there which I’ll probably write about later). My focus this month is on safety as we trav-el about, shopping and doing other activi-ties in our cars.

Many years ago I learned that too many people who had accidents in their cars could easily find themselves in a survival situation. I remember one incident wherein a family got snowbound only a short dis-tance from a major road. (They took a wrong turn and got lost). The father/hus-band made the mistake of trying to find the road in a snowstorm. His body was re-covered days later where he had gotten lost and froze to death. His family was found frozen in their car where there was no survival gear, or food. Lessons learned in cases like this were a common theme in our military safety briefings. Probably the most emphasized lesson was to stay with the vehicle whether it be a car or an air-plane. A vehicle represents shelter, the pri-mary consideration in a survival situation. Next comes food/water, along with things like blankets/pillows/dry clothing, as need-ed. Other considerations might include tools for building fires, or making repairs to your shelter. It’s also a good idea to let someone know where you’re going, and the route you plan to use.

There was a time in my life when I would have dismissed the thought of having to survive in my car After all, I usually drive only short distances, and there always seems to be other cars nearby. However, I’ve seen enough accidents to learn that we can never be too careful, or take things for granted. I’ve had the experience of rescuing someone from an overturned car that was not easily visible from a road. It was lodged in a deep ditch, along a coun-try road, next to a driveway, at night and could easily be mistaken for an old wreck. Fortunately my friends and I were able to rescue the driver and get him medical at-tention. Had we not stopped he might have died due to exposure because he had no survival gear, and was not pre-pared to deal with his situation. Due to the nature of his accident he was unable to extricate himself from his car. It took the ef-fort of several of my friends to break him out of his car.

With all this in mind I have just taken the time to load survival gear (blankets, food, drinks, tools) into my truck where they’re readily available. As time goes on I will probably add to my survival gear so that I don’t become just another statistic should, God forbid, I have to survive in inclement weather. As I’ve warned you before, prior preparation prevents poor performance. Always expect the unexpected, and be ready to deal with it. That way you’ll be ready for the Spring/Summer flying season.

SHOW AND Tell John Sincox brought a Piper Cub model, complete with a set of floats. He offered it to anyone interested free of charge. (Guest Chris Daoust took the model home). Susan Calvin brought several copies of the large posters she had made for the Warbird Event for any one that would like a copy. Richard Strickland brought a Horizon P-51 that he had converted to electric power and added retracts. He ran the motor and it should go very fast!

Jon Britt showed an antique RC 3-channel transmitter that he used many years ago and still works. Jon amplified on the early conversation about an antique RC program at a future Club meeting.

Respectfully submitted, John Midgorden, Secretary

At the October Club Meeting Elmer Harris delivered a very interesting program explaining 3-D printing and how he uses his 3-D printer to manu-facture small parts, such as engine mounts and exhaust rings for his jet models.

THREE D PRINTING EXPLAINED

Thanks Elmer for a very interesting and informative presentation.
