Every Child, Every Day
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Just a reminder that ‘Count Us In’ will take place this Thursday at 11am in the multipurpose room. This is an event
that happens across Australia, with schools singing an original song together at the same time. Parents are
welcome to come and join us for this event from 10.45am.
Over the next three weeks teachers from all schools across the college will be meeting to participate in moderation
activities. Moderation involves teachers collecting evidence of student learning, using the Australian Curriculum
standards to judge students work and then with a colleague confirming that judgment. These activities ensure that
all schools are in agreement when it comes to the marking of student work against the Australian Curriculum. Early
Childhood teachers will be meeting this Friday (wk 4), Primary teachers next Friday (wk 5) and Middle School
mathematics teachers the Friday after that (wk 6).
On the 11th and 12th of November our school will participate in a School Review process. The Executive Director
and Director of School Performance for Arnhem will conduct interviews with staff, teachers, students and parents,
as well as look at the policies, processes and programs which we have in place at our school . From this process a
list of recommendations will be shared with the school to assist in our school improvement goals for 2014.
Our School Survey which will assist in shaping our school’s strategic plan for the next 4 years was delayed slightly,
but is now open and available for parents to contribute to. To ensure only current parents are eligible to provide
feedback on the current school environment and practices, a unique school code will need to be entered, in order
to be able to access the survey. The survey link can be found on our Face Book page and on our website. The
survey will be available until 17th November.
Thank you to all families and friends that have supported the school and our teachers over the past few weeks.
The excess furniture sale on the weekend was a huge success, making space in our storage spaces and
approximately $800. This money, as with all our current fundraising, will be put towards the purchase of more
computers for classrooms.

Language Studies are alive and well at Alyangula Area School.
With both MS1 and MS2 continuing to engage in weekly Japanese lessons via the internet from South
Australia, delivered by highly accomplished and experienced Japanese Teacher Samantha Fowler (from
Open Access College), all Middle School Students are exposed to language and culture from another
country. The cognitive developmental benefits of this has been consistently well documented through
educational research.
The interactive language classes are delivered live and supported through use of the interactive
whiteboard. Students begin by focusing on every day nouns and then build vocabulary through the
introduction of adjectives and complete sentences. Through the internet students engage in both
speaking and listening and also reading and writing traditional Hiragana symbols. The course is enhanced
by a yearly visit from Samantha where she gets to know the students on a more personal level by
engaging in a range of hands on practical activities – for example, this year all students cooked sushi
(meat and rice) and yakatori (marinated chicken kebabs).
The lessons are further enhanced through the use of a range of supporting internet resources that
include competitive revision tests, games, songs and videos. For example these include; Language
Perfect, Edmodo, Scootle, Digital Dialects, Kids Web Japan and Trip Advisor.
