It is an honor to serve as the 2019 Alumni Association President and I have enjoyed participating in this capacity over the past year. Reflecting on my training and practice I recognize that all of us share a common aspiration to be outstanding leaders in our fields, and there is great benefit to maintaining our connections.

Join us for the 101ST Annual Alumni MeetingI would like to personally invite you to attend our annual meeting, to be held October 24-26, 2019. If you can’t come to New York City, try the next best thing! For the first time in program history, access to our meeting will be available to Alumni via live stream. It is not to be missed—the three days will offer a robust program of engaging debates and programs in all subspecialties; highlights include several invited pro-tempore speakers, and a session where colleagues share pivotal cases that changed how they practiced. The meeting is a unique educational experience, and a great opportunity to reconnect with your classmates, touch base with mentors, and meet new alumni and current trainees.

See our colleague Gary Gartsman, MD, receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of shoulder surgery and celebrate milestones with the reunion classes of 10, 20, and 30 years. Touch base with fellow alumni Bryan Kelly, MD, and Doug Padgett, MD, as they embark on new pivotal roles at HSS as Surgeon-in-Chief and Associate Surgeon-in-Chief, respectively.

Maintaining ties as classmates and colleagues is enjoyable and there are opportunities to connect at two social receptions—the Annual Reception on Thursday evening, October 24, held at the Weiss Cafe at The Rockefeller University and on Friday evening, October 25, there will be a wine and cheese reception immediately following the scientific program. Invite your spouse or special guest to attend a special event before Thursday’s reception with a library and exhibit tour at Rockefeller and a talk by fellow alumnus John Lyden, MD.

Stay Up-to-DateBe sure to download the HSS Alumni App, available for iOS and Android. You can view the draft agenda for the 101st Meeting and see who is planning to attend. The app also provides access to the HSS Alumni Directory, upcoming events, and special announcements throughout the year.

If you haven’t registered yet, visit hss.edu/cme to reserve your spot and let us know whether you plan to be here in person or connect via live stream. I look forward to seeing many of you in October.

Over the years we have been taught of the origins of HSS as the New York Society for the Relief of the Ruptured and Crippled. The imagination is easily drawn to the words “Ruptured” and “Crippled,” but as I read through this Alumni News magazine I am led to the words

“Society” and “Relief.”

Our culture of service, innovation, and excellence is clearly demonstrated in the alumni profiles presented here. Whether depicted in the task of managing the difficult injuries of our soldiers and Marines within the fog of war, or being thrust into a new field by a trusted mentor and guiding that field to new heights, or providing care in an impoverished and underserved part of the world even as one is still learning, the focus on relief persists. We are, indeed, a society with a

delightful divergence of approaches to a singular goal of making people better, and we are collectively doing it better every year. Each of us is taught and expected to lead—in the OR, in the Reading Room, in the lab. This edition also marks several transitions in leadership of the Hospital. I invite you to read Bryan Kelly’s words focusing on communication and collaboration among our physician colleagues, as they represent an integral part of maintaining the tradition of excellence and service, while adding wellness as a goal. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of our magazine.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming annual meeting; or tune in via the live stream feed if you cannot attend with us in person.

See you in October, Jose A. Rodriguez, MD

In July, Bryan T. Kelly, MD, MBA, (Resident 2001, Fellow 2003) assumed the role of HSS

Surgeon-in-Chief and Medical Director, taking the reins from Todd J. Albert, MD, who had held

the position since 2014. Among his first priorities, Dr. Kelly is overseeing the formation of a new

administrative body called the Office of Medical Leadership, which will help ensure the highest

standards in patient care, education, research and innovation for years to come. As part of this

effort, Douglas E. Padgett, MD, (Resident 1989) has been appointed Associate Surgeon-in-

Chief and Deputy Medical Director, a new role at HSS.

The establishment of the office reflects the rapidly growing footprint of HSS, with locations opening across the tristate area and soon in Florida, as well as the ever-increasing complexity of care and a constantly changing regulatory environment. “The role of the Surgeon-in-Chief has grown exponentially over the years,” says Dr. Kelly. “With the creation of this new office, we are well positioned to maintain our global leadership in musculoskeletal health and to raise the already high bar across all aspects of the field.”

“I am immensely excited about this opportunity,” says Dr. Padgett. “HSS has a long-standing commitment to excellence, and I’m honored to work with Dr. Kelly to maintain and build on that tradition. The Office of Medical Leadership allows us to drive forward key hospital-wide initiatives while

staying involved in clinical care. If you’re not seeing patients, you run the risk of distancing yourself from the practice of medicine.”

A Focus on Communication and CollaborationTeamwork and communication promise to be among the dominant themes of Dr. Kelly’s inaugural year as Surgeon-in-Chief. He emphasizes the need for greater collaboration within leadership councils as well as multidisciplinary exchanges across service lines and departments. “I want us to talk to each other,” he said. “I want the voices of the medical staff to be heard, and I want to involve as many people as we can in leadership roles.”

Another area of particular focus for Dr. Kelly is physician wellness. “One

of the major challenges in medicine today is burnout,” he says, citing recent statics that indicate 88% of doctors are moderately to severely stressed. “What we do is incredibly stressful, and it’s essential that medical leadership provide enhanced support.” Short-term measures include expanded wellness offerings tailored to the unique needs of physicians as well as a new physician lounge in the hospital, plans for which are already underway.

For his part, Dr. Padgett will take the lead on quality initiatives, seeking out novel ways to improve the care of individual patients, create a more robust structure for M&M conferences and Grand Rounds and support physicians with actionable data about the quality of their care. In addition, Dr. Padgett will work closely with the medical directors at the various HSS locations to ensure that every

facility functions as an extension of the main campus. “We’ve had tremendous success expanding our offerings beyond the Upper East Side without compromising the quality of our care,” he says. “I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues across locations to learn how we can continue to improve and expand the offerings we provide in every community we serve.”

For 2020 and beyond, Dr. Kelly has plans to tackle more big issues, including industry compliance standards, crisis management measures and sustainability, but he stresses the need for a continued focus on the cohesiveness of the leadership councils and ensuring that those bodies serve as advocates for the medical staff, both collectively and individually. “We are constantly faced with externalities that will challenge healthcare and HSS specifically,” he says. “We are much stronger when we face those challenges united.”

Leveraging Decades of Dedicated Service Drs. Kelly and Padgett’s leadership reflects the culmination of more than 50 years of combined service to HSS, including training. Both Drs. Kelly and Padgett completed their residency at HSS, with Dr. Kelly going on to do a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Kelly served as Chief of the Sports and Shoulder Service. He also led the formation of the HSS Sports Medicine Institute, a multidisciplinary program that provides care to athletes from around the world. He is currently Co-Director of the Center for Hip Preservation. Dr. Padgett joined HSS in 1993. He led the Hip Service from 2006 to 2014 and served as Chief of the ARJR Service from 2008 to 2019.

Succeeding Dr. Kelly as Chief of the Sports Medicine Institute is Andrew D. Pearle, MD, (Resident 2004, Fellow 2005). Dr. Pearle has particular expertise in arthroscopic and robotic surgery of the shoulder, knee and ankle. He oversees the Computer Assisted Surgery Center at HSS. Mathias P.G. Bostrom, MD, (Resident 1995, Fellow 1996) was named Chief of the ARJR Service. Dr. Bostrom specializes in hip and knee surgery, including complex reconstructions and treatment of musculoskeletal infections. He is Chief Emeritus of the Hip Service and serves as Vice Chair, Education & Academic Affairs.

When Gary Gartsman was a resident at Hospital for Special Surgery in the late 1970s, fewer than 1 percent of all surgical cases involved the shoulder and elbow. He saw an opportunity to make a contribution to the field, and he did—dedicating the next 35 years of his orthopaedic career to shoulder surgery in Houston, Texas and training scores of surgeons in minimally invasive techniques.

An Early Commitment“I can’t think of a time when I wanted to be anything other than a physician,” recalls Dr. Gartsman, now retired and living in his native Los Angeles. After completing his undergraduate education at University of California, Berkeley, he earned his medical degree at University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1975. There he looked up to Gerald Laros, MD, then chief of orthopaedics, whose ability to combine research, clinical care, and teaching earned Dr. Gartsman’s admiration and persuaded him to enter orthopaedics as well.

He spent one month as a fourth-year medical student observing orthopaedics at HSS and chose this field for his residency, completing his general surgery residency at Weill Cornell Medical College and an orthopaedic surgery residency at HSS in 1980. Dr. Gartsman stayed at HSS to pursue a hand and upper extremity surgery fellowship (1980-1981), having witnessed the need for more surgeons in this field. “I found it appealing because there was so little knowledge about the shoulder and elbow at that time,” he notes.

Changing the TideIn the 1980s, many doctors were reluctant to embrace the possibility that techniques applied to some

joints, such as total hip replacement or knee arthroscopy, could be used in the shoulder and elbow. Dr. Gartsman recalls that HSS physicians who led a seminar at a Manhattan hotel on total joint replacement of the upper extremity had to bring patients who had this procedure to the hotel to show those attending that it could indeed be done.

Surgeons were also hesitant to learn arthroscopic shoulder procedures such as rotator cuff repair, and Dr. Gartsman was one of them. “I was pushed into shoulder arthroscopy kicking and screaming,” he contends. Just four months into his early career at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, the department chair — convinced that shoulder arthroscopy was worth pursuing —called Dr. Gartsman into his office, promoted him to Chief of Shoulder Arthroscopy, and asked him what equipment he needed. “I felt like I was on an island all by myself, with no resources,” Dr. Gartsman recalls.

He taught himself, practicing on hospital cadavers and working with equipment manufacturers not only to get the tools he needed, but to create those that did not yet exist, such as special burrs for arthroscopic use. He videotaped all of his surgeries for study later. His first shoulder arthroscopy patient was a department chair from another Houston hospital.

Leading a Nascent FieldBefore long, Dr. Gartsman became the expert in shoulder arthroscopy and for 20 years was the only full-time shoulder surgeon in Houston. “No one wanted to do shoulder surgery then, so I got lots of cases,” he explains. He became a consultant in shoulder surgery for the University of Houston, the Texas

State Board of Medical Examiners, and Houston’s professional sports teams: the Oilers (football), Astros (baseball), Rockets (men’s basketball), and Comets (women’s basketball).

Operating at Texas Orthopedic Hospital, he set up trainings which attracted surgeons from around the country. There were no courses in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, so he and his team organized their own. By the 1990s, the trainings had become enormously popular. “Surgeons said it really changed their practices,” Dr. Gartsman says. “They brought in their partners, too, and they left feeling confident they could perform these operations.” By the late 1990s and early 2000s, these techniques exploded in popularity. Of course today, with the expansion of sports medicine and better tools and approaches, minimally invasive shoulder surgery has become commonplace.

Paying It ForwardOver the years, Dr. Gartsman authored numerous journal articles, book chapters, and meeting presentations. He served as President of the HSS Alumni Association in 2006. He considers the opportunities to teach shoulder surgery to trainees to be the most fulfilling part of his career. Today his days are spent enjoying retirement, with much of that happening on the golf course.

He encourages residents, fellows, and new alumni to create teams to achieve their goals. “It would be impossible to do yourself. When problems arise, work as a team to make each problem as small and simple as possible,” he concludes. “You have to be content with putting one brick in the wall of knowledge, rather than building the whole wall yourself. It really does take a village.”

Dr. Wilson Sr. began taking care of Frank Adamo when he came to Hospital for Special Surgery at age 13 for treatment of a slipped capital femoral epiphysis. Dr. Wilson Sr., who became Surgeon-in-Chief of The Hospital for the Relief of the Ruptured and Crippled in 1935, had studied under Marius Nygaard Smith Petersen, MD, developer of “mould arthroplasty” later known as cup arthroplasty, at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1923. Dr. Petersen had first used glass as interposition between the femoral head and acetabulum, but later substituted it with vitallium because of glass breakage. Dr. Petersen also pioneered the anterior iliofemoral approach to hip surgery, the three-phalanged nail for femoral neck fractures, and osteotomy of the spine for ankylosing spondylitis.

To treat Mr. Adamo, Dr. Wilson Sr. harnessed the knowledge and skills acquired under Dr. Petersen and performed a cup arthroplasty.

Mr. Adamo has fond recollections of the experience, including admission to the hospital for several weeks. His active motion physical therapy at that time might be considered crude by today’s standards, but effective: plywood under his lower extremities and roller skates with perpendicular wheels to facilitate abduction exercises while in bed. His recovery was uneventful and his hip function was fine for the next three decades.

In the years to follow, Mr. Adamo and his cup arthroplasty would lead quite a busy life, with a roster of friends and acquaintances that would rival any Hollywood A-list. While working for American Airlines at LaGuardia Airport, he met boxer Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, and Frank Sinatra along the way. He then became Director of Maintenance and Operations at the Freedomland amusement park in the Bronx, where he helped organized concerts for Louis Armstrong, Paul Anka, Eydie Gormé,

and the Count Basie Orchestra, among others. In his next career move, he became a real estate contractor in Westchester County and and Director of Roads and Maintenance of the Pryer Manor Homeowners Association.

It was an active life, and Mr. Adamo wanted to stay active. So when his cup arthroplasty failed 30 years later, he knew just where to go: back to Hospital for Special Surgery. I met him in 1973 and performed a Charnley total hip replacement. When the stem fractured 30 years later, I performed revision surgery.

Today, 46 years after his first total hip replacement, Mr. Adamo, 91, continues to lead an active life in Larchmont, New York, where he enjoys the company of his family and friends. It’s been a pleasure for me not only to continue his long-term care, but to enjoy his kind and warm friendship.

Hometown Heroes is a new Alumni News series that celebrates the many HSS faculty and alumni who have served our country in the military. In this issue, meet renowned orthopaedic trauma surgeon John P. Lyden, MD, who was drafted into the United States Navy Medical Corps in 1967.

He was first sent to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington, DC, where he served from 1967 to 1968. The patients there were mainly members of the U.S. Marine Corps who had been injured in Vietnam. These casualties arrived in great numbers by medevac from various hospitals in the Pacific—sometimes up to 10 or 15 per day. They were severely injured and required immediate extensive care. This experience formed Dr. Lyden’s initiation into the Navy Medical Corps. As a result of this work, he was selected for a research team in Vietnam focused on wounding, weapons, and medical support.

Dr. Lyden was part of the team for the Pentagon that evaluated weapons, body armor, and medical evacuation needs. This project was based at the Edgewood Arsenal at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, where weapons such as the M16 were under review. He worked as the surgeon on a team of field Marines who evaluated the disability and incapacitation of casualties and corpsmen and documented their medical needs. The team was assigned to the 1st Marine Division, a M.A.S.H. unit in Da Nang, South Vietnam. “We performed surgery on casualties while we were under fire,” says Dr. Lyden. “We did what we had to do.”

It was an experience that shaped his future as an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in trauma care. “In those situations, you really learn about teamwork, especially when you’re under attack, and what it takes to just do your job when there are guys outside the ORs trying to do us in,” he says. “You learn about loyalty, camaraderie, and brotherhood.”

Although he was too old to be drafted as an enlisted soldier, Dr. Lyden was among many doctors drafted selectively from hospitals across the nation to support the war effort. Through the same program, HSS orthopaedic surgeons Russell F. Warren, MD, and Joseph M. Lane, MD, as well as Surgeon-in-Chief Emeritus Thomas P. Sculco, MD, all served either in the battle zone or by conducting medical research for the military.

Dr. Lyden’s military training was far shorter than the traditional boot camp. He spent a week in the Aberdeen Proving Ground learning about weapons development and one week of “jungle orientation” in Okinawa before traveling to his post in Da Nang. In Vietnam, he spent one day each week volunteering

in a local civilian hospital, where he observed the awful effects of orthopaedic trauma on civilians. “If someone sustained a compound fracture in the jungle and couldn’t get help, it was a death sentence,” Dr. Lyden notes. He then recognized the tremendous value of medical evacuation helicopters for getting patients to the lifesaving care they needed.

He also received firsthand experience about the effects of war and its injuries on patients’ lives, including the debilitation of amputation and the long-term effects of post-traumatic stress disorder. Conducting research for the Department of Defense, his team tracked 4,000 casualties to determine the number of doctors and equipment needed to care for injured soldiers.

Aaron S. Posner, PhDHSS STAFF

Charles L. Christian, MD, former HSS Physician-in-Chief, passed away on August 11, 2019 surrounded by his family.

Dr. Christian was born and grew up in Wichita, Kansas. After a tour in the Navy, he attended Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, graduating in 1953. He came to New York for training in internal medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where he developed his interest in the rheumatic diseases under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Ragan, a founder of the Arthritis Foundation. At Columbia he initiated a scientific career marked by significant insights into the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

In early 1970, Dr. Christian was recruited to Hospital for Special Surgery, where he served as Physician-in-Chief and Director of Rheumatic Diseases, as well as Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at Weill Cornell Medical College from 1970 to 1995. In addition to his role in clinical

medicine, he held the position of Associate Director of the Department of Research. Dr. Christian was called on twice to serve as Acting Physician-in-Chief at the New York Hospital and as Acting Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Cornell University Medical College. At HSS, Dr. Christian developed the Combined Arthritis Program, a unique clinical and teaching collaboration among rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons and social workers, providing comprehensive management of the most complex patients with arthritis. Under Dr. Christian’s leadership, in 1978 HSS received its first Multipurpose Arthritis Center grant from the National Institutes of Health and 10 years later in 1988, received its second grant. After retirement from his academic position at HSS and Cornell in 1995, Dr. Christian continued to care for patients with rheumatic disease as a Professor of Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Christian served as Editor-in-Chief, Arthritis & Rheumatism, 1971-75, President of the American College of Rheumatology in 1976-77, and received the Presidential Gold Medal of that organization in 1996, in recognition of outstanding achievements in rheumatology over an entire career. He was an emeritus member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Christian was preceded in death by his wife Diane. He is survived by his soulmate, Molly Rinehart, his children, Victoria, Jennifer, and Matthew, and so many patients and physicians whose lives he enriched.

Dr. Christian was a revered icon in academic medicine, a beloved mentor, and treasured member of the HSS family. He will be remembered for his elegance, kindness, and grace.

A Fifth-Year Resident Is Surprised by What She Finds in Ghana

Sariah Khormaee, MD, PhD, who completed her five-year orthopaedic residency at HSS in June 2019, spent a week at the FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital in Accra, Ghana in March 2019 as the recipient of the Andrew N. Swanson, MD, Traveling Fellowship Award. The 50-bed hospital opened in 2012 and is the culmination of years of effort by Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, MD, emeritus chief of the HSS Scoliosis Service, to bring state-of-the-art orthopaedic care to a part of the world where the need is great. Dr. Khormaee, who has contributed her medical expertise in resource-limited nations before, shares her experience.

I became interested in spine care during my residency at HSS and am now pursuing a spine surgery fellowship at Stanford University. I chose to go to FOCOS because I wanted to learn how to enhance access to spine care for patients in areas with fewer resources. I also wanted to study Dr. Boachie-Adjei’s techniques.

I had some idea of what to expect when I set out for my trip to FOCOS. I knew that hospitals in areas with limited access to resources often had to learn to do more with less. I had been to Vietnam and Myanmar on other trips and knew that patients often travelled great distances to get to our care. And I had been through the orientation that HSS staff receive before going to FOCOS.

Still, when I got there, I was surprised by just how similar FOCOS was to HSS. It is an extremely well-run hospital in the middle of Ghana. Everywhere you go, you see traces of the HSS influence—like equipment labelled the same way it is at HSS in New York. There’s an electronic medical record system, a pediatric ICU, and nutritional support provided before

and after surgery to boost patients’ health. Children from within and outside of Ghana live onsite in housing provided by the hospital. It shows what’s possible when you have a team and a leader who know how to work together to deliver high-quality medical care.

I was inspired by how upbeat my young patients were—even though many had highly complex spinal deformities—and also by the compassion and efficiency of the staff. We performed many spine fusions during my time there. I was also able to observe advanced techniques such as vertebral column resection. I’m especially interested in ways to deliver high-quality medical care using equipment that is considered less expensive, including different kinds of implants.

Through FOCOS, Dr. Boachie-Adjei has created something that runs amazingly well in an area where you wouldn’t expect it. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to have travelled there, and very happy that HSS is able to make this happen year after year.

The Andrew N. Swanson, MD, Traveling Fellowship Award is given to an outstanding HSS resident interested in spine surgery with a demonstrated commitment to providing compassionate medical care. Andrew Swanson was an HSS Class of 2005 resident, spine surgeon, and active climber who passed away in 2009 while scaling Mount McKinley. He was dedicated to serving others and was a prior volunteer with FOCOS throughout his residency.

When his tour in the military was over, Dr. Lyden explains that the country, which was heavily against the war, was not very welcoming of returning soldiers or doctors and would even spit on them. But at HSS, the response was different. “Hospital for Special Surgery had a good idea of what we’d been through and welcomed us warmly and openly,” he recalls. Today, he continues to focus on post-traumatic stress disorder through military organizations in New York City—observing that the best treatment is helping veterans deal with their guilt and assisting them with fitting into a meaningful social structure and employment as soon as possible.

In honor of his meritorious service, Dr. Lyden received multiple awards:

■ The Bronze Star, one of the highest combat awards, given to soldiers who demonstrate bravery on the battlefield (and in Dr. Lyden’s case, operating in a body vest and helmet), with a “V” attached to it for valor in combat heroism.

■ The Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for treating Vietnamese patients brought into the civilian hospital.

■ Three Presidential Unit Citations in recognition of his research contributions.

“I will never forget the Marine Corps,” Dr. Lyden concludes. “The soldiers took care of us, and we took care of them. The experience taught me about the impact that we, as surgeons, can have on patients’ lives.”

ResidentsScott A. Rodeo, MD (1994) received the Charles Neer Award from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society for a collaborative paper on cell-based approaches to improve treatment of soft tissue injuries.

Jose A. Rodriguez, MD (1994) was honored at the Annual Luncheon of the American Association of Latino Orthopaedic Surgeons (AALOS). Dr. Rodriguez, a former AALOS Board Member, was recognized for his active research, mentorship, and involvement on the editorial boards of the Journal of Arthroplasty, Bone and Joint Journal, Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research, and the HSS Journal. He was also acknowledged for his service as a US Army Reserve Major with two tours of duty in Iraq.

FellowsHSS served as the presenting sponsor of the Arthritis Foundation Walk to Cure Arthritis which took place June 2, 2019, at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Mary K. (Peggy) Crow, MD (1983), Physician-in-Chief and Chair of the Department of Medicine, was recognized as the Medical Honoree for her leadership and achievements in both national and international rheumatology communities.

She is a member of the Board of Trustees of Hospital for Special Surgery and of the Arthritis Foundation, New York Chapter. She was named an “Arthritis Hero” by the Arthritis Foundation in 2001 and received the Margaret D. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award of the Arthritis Foundation, New York Chapter in 2010. In 2017, Dr. Crow was one of two American physicians to be named an honorary member of the European League Against Rheumatism, and in 2018 she received the President Gold Medal of the American College of Rheumatology in recognition of outstanding achievements in rheumatology over an entire career.

Michael L. Parks, MD (1997) received the 2019 Diversity Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). The award recognizes members of the Academy who have distinguished themselves through their outstanding commitment to making orthopaedics more representative of, and accessible to, diverse patient populations.

Swetha Pakala, MD (2012) was chosen as the first recipient of the Leon Root, MD, Community Award for exemplifying leadership in creating or advancing

programs that have significant impact on the health of vulnerable and underserved communities.

Vandy Gaffney II, MD (2017) was referenced and mentioned in an article about anesthesiologists around Atlanta combating the opioid crisis in Atlanta Medicine, Vol. 90, No. 3.

Medical StaffTodd J. Albert, MD, received the Nicolas Andry Award from Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons (ABJS) at the association’s annual meeting in July 2019. Dr. Albert also became Treasurer-Elect for the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA).

Jonathan T. Deland, MD, was presented with the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award at the HSS 36th Tribute Dinner for his devotion to patient care and steadfast commitment to advancing the science and techniques to improve surgical treatment of foot and ankle conditions. He notably established the Rose Registry, which is the largest foot and ankle registry for clinical research in the U.S.
