Change is inevitable, and mostly good. The School’s Alumni Student Convention ran for years in largely the same format. Feedback on the Convention was it was stale and old-school and stakeholder support tangibly demonstrated it. So new ideas and plans began popping up, one of those ideas being one homecoming for all alumni. Dr. Richard Hart and all eight schools were intrigued and joined in for a cohesive, collaborative One Homecoming. While Homecoming is a really good idea, many of you gave Kathleen Moore of our alumni office and me lots of feedback and ideas on how it was not hitting the mark and needed improvement. We listened, and heard that you want more (much more!) dentistry-specific programs, hands-on activities, and cutting edge material. The 2019 One Homecoming: Alumni Student Convention brings back the scientific sessions and adds several hands-on activities. I hope you will join me for the School of Dentistry Alumni, Faculty and Students reception on Friday evening. We’ve worked out some kinks and continue to work on others and promise you lots more food and fellowship this year! Please take a look at the schedule and join us and your fellow alumni for the 2019 One Homecoming: Alumni Student Convention. Give us more feedback and more ideas. When the School of Dentistry administration and staff work together with you, our alumni, we can continue to tweak, hone and improve our programs. I look forward to seeing you this coming spring.

Robert Handysides, DDS

Dean, LLU School of Dentistry

Gordon M. Rick Oral Cancer Lectureship Differential Diagnosis of Oral Mucosal Lesions: Can you tell the difference between reactive,

premalignant, and cancer?

Date .............Thursday, February 28, 2019Time .............8:30am - Registration

9:00am to 4:30pm - LectureLocation.......Loma Linda University, Centennial ComplexTuition .........$195 DDS//$145 AUX

Lunch ...........Will NOT be providedCredit ...........This course meets the Dental Board of

California’s requirements for 7 units of continuing education.

AGD Code ...730

SYNOPSISApproximately 10% of all dental patients have some type of oral mucosal abnormality. How do you differentiate the good, the bad and the ugly?!? Although the majority of oral lesions do not carry significant morbidity, the clinician must be able to successfully differentiate the benign entities from the more serious conditions of the region.

LEARNING OBJECTIVESThe purpose of this presentation is to:

» Review common white, red, and ulcerated lesions of the oral cavity. » Discuss the necessary techniques for performing a comprehensive oral exam. » Review the currently available adjunctive screening devices and introduce developing

technologies that allow for the molecular diagnosis of premalignant lesions. » Present the new American Dental Association Clinical Guideline recommendations for oral

cancer screening. » Discuss the current chemopreventive initiatives under investigation. » Emphasize the role of dental professionals in early detection and chemoprevention.

SYNOPSISGoal directed orthodontics could be expanded to any field of dentistry or to any field where the objective is to solve problems. How do we solve these problems? We must know what is wrong. To solve the problem we need a GPS. We must know exactly where we are starting and where we are going. This requires that we have as much information as possible to understand the problem. Now we know exactly our starting point. Next we must know where we are going and what steps we will take to solve the problem and arrive at our desired goal.

Having complete records should not be a problem, especially today with so many advances in diagnostic records such as CBCT and photographic techniques. The dentist must understand that treating a patient is more than aligning the teeth and getting the patient to bite in Class I.

Cases will illustrate the necessary records and steps in diagnosis and treatment to achieve the goals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES• Understand how orthodontic treatment effects:

» facial esthetics » dental esthetics » TMJ » muscles of mastication » periodontium » functional occlusion » airway » long-term stable results and healthy

gnathic systems » solving the patient’s main concern

• Understand that to diagnose the dentist must have ideal or optimal treatment goals for each area that treatment effects.

• Understand that the dentist must have measurable criteria for objective goals.

• Emphasize the role of dental professionals in early detection and chemoprevention

Spiritual Activities

Steeped in Loma Linda University Health’s rich history is the mission to continue the teaching and healing ministry ofJesus Christ. Our spiritual programming for the weekend will focus on this mission. Plan now to attend these special opportunities — these reminders of why we do what we do every day.

PRAYER BREAKFAST

Join us on Friday, March 1 at 7:00am in the Wong Kerlee Conference Center, to hear Dr. Jeff Bartley share his mission adventure. A graduate of Loma Linda School of Dentistry (1980), Bartley has practiced general dentistry for 25 years in rural Nevada and eight years in Alaska. He has practiced out of a mobile clinic he built himself, in town practices, near the Arctic Circle, and in five different offices he developed from scratch into profitable clinics which he then sold. He has traveled extensively and provided short-term mission service in Palau and Guyana. After “retiring” on a 300-acre ranch in Idaho, he spent three months in Malawi overseeing the extensive remodeling of an office building into a world standard facility for the Blantyre Adventist Hospital Dental Clinic. His enthusiasm for dentistry, for quality construction, for adventure, for cross-cultural collaboration has made this project a vibrant success and will entertain and inspire you.

VESPERS

Friday evening, join us for vespers in the Loma Linda University Church. We’ll be focusing on “Mission Possible” – highlighting ways our alumni have taken the mission of Loma Linda University into their communities and around the world. PRAYER WALK, SABBATH SERVICES

Sabbath, March 3, begins with a prayer walk. Together, we will have an opportunity to reflect on our history and pray for the future of our campus, our students and the lives of those we serve every day. Our Sabbath services will take place in the Drayson Center. Starting with the Parade of Nations ceremony, you will be reminded of the courage of our alumni and moved by the commitment of current students to go into the world and live our mission. You will also enjoy great music from the LLU church orchestra and a sermon by Randy Roberts.

SYNOPSISThe challenge faced by all clinicians today is to provide safe and effective dental treatment to our medically complex patients. Thus, as dental professionals, we must be equally aware of the medical considerations of agents commonly used in the practice of dentistry, as well as the dental considerations of the medications frequently prescribed for the treatment of multiple systemic diseases. This program will present an overview of dental pharmacology in a format which makes it applicable, practical and useful for all members of the team. Using case scenarios, special emphasis will be given to drugs administered or prescribed in dental practice, as well as to medications whose actions, effects, or interactions with other drugs may impact dental therapy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVESUpon successful completion of this program, participants will be able to:

» Describe the pharmacology of analgesics and appropriate prescribing practices for the management of acute dental pain.

» Discuss local anesthetic agents with respect to their mechanism of action, adverse effects and contraindications.

» Examine the pharmacology of anti-infective agents commonly used in dentistry and their clinical considerations.

» Discuss the prescription medications most frequently encountered on a patient’s medical history, including their potential impact on dental therapy and patient care planning.
