Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research

University of Bonnrsquos 200th anniversary (1818-2018)The jubilee year of the University of Bonn will officially be inaugurated on January 16 2018 with a special opening event The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn to which ZEF belongs has become one of Germanyrsquos largest universities with about 38000 students Some 3600 international students from over 130 countries and a large number of foreign guest lecturers including more than 100 Humboldt fellows per year study teach and conduct research at the university Bonn University is internationally recognized for the achievements of its approximately 550 professors 2500 scientific and 4700 non-scientific staff and it has international cooperations with many universities including Florence Jerusalem Kyoto New South Wales New York Toulouse Waseda Warsaw and Prague Read more about the upcoming celebration events here httpswww200jahreuni-bonndedeenglish

Funding programs for DAAD alumni

The DAAD Alumni program continues to support former DAAD scholarship holders Various funding and training opportunities are available for DAAD scholars such as grants for equipment and materials and training programs in Germany The offers can be found on the DAAD website under ldquofunding programmes for foreign alumnirdquo One such funding opportunity is called the ldquoRe-invitation Programme for Former Scholarship Holdersrdquo DAAD offers former scholarship holders the chance to conduct research or take up employment in Germany for up to three months and maintain their academic and professional contacts In order to apply former scholars will need to have support from ZEF and BIGS-DR Interested applicants should contact Dr Guumlnther Manske our Academic Coordinator for a letter of support Application procedures can be found on their website here More information is available at the website of the DAAD development cooperation

Book launch ldquoFood Price Volatility and its Implications for Food Security and PolicyrdquoFebruary 14 2017 Prof Matthias Kalkuhl (former ZEFb senior researcher) Professor Joachim von Braun (ZEFb Director) and Dr Maximo Torero (World Bank) held a book launch earlier this year debuting their new book ldquoFood Price Volatility and its Implications for Food Security and Policyrdquo The book highlights a comprehensive analysis of the underlying drivers and consequences of instabilities in the food market and the role of policy as a tool to reduce volatility or to increase the capacity to cope with volatility The authors conclude that a well-functioning global institutional architecture for food and nutrition security is overdue

Professor Joachim von Braun appointed President of the Pontifical Academy of SciencesJune 21 2017 For the next five years Professor Joachim von Braun will preside the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (Pontificia Academia Scientiarum PAS) The 80 members composing the Academy are from different countries and religious backgrounds who contribute to the scientific body in multiple capacities Relevant are the outstanding scientific qualifications and an exigent moral profile Dr von Braun has been a member of the Academy since 2012

BiomassNet The first pan-African expert network on food and non-food biomassJuly 10 2017 In 2050 over two billion people will be living south of the Sahara in Africamdashroughly double the population from 2010 Achieving food security and developing sustainable bioeconomies will take precedent which is exactly what BiomassNet is aiming for Together with the Forum for Agroresearch in Africa (FARA) ZEF has established the first network where experts can exchange knowledge BiomassNet invites experts from a wide range of disciplines to help address food and non-food biomass issues in Africa An interactive portal can be accessed through the BiomassWebsite

New masterrsquos program Global Health Risk Management and Hygiene PoliciesOctober 19 2017 Christian Borgemeister (ZEF director) and Timo Falkenberg (coordinator of the One Health graduate school) attended the inauguration of the new masterrsquos program ldquoGlobal Healthrdquo at the Institute of Hygiene and Public Health (IHPH) of the University of Bonn ZEF will organize a module on ldquoSDGs as Guiding Principles and Global Consentrdquo The two-year course will be supported by the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and aims at training leaders in implementing and monitoring of public health strategies

Recent research projects

Building biodiversity capacities in West AfricaMarch 31 2017 ZEF will receive funds of around 25 million euros for the upcoming five years from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of Germanyrsquos Federal Ministry for the Environment Nature Conservation Building and Nuclear Safety The project aims at enabling experts in West Africa to strengthen the regionrsquos input to the program of the International Council for Biodiversity (IPBES) In addition to this a new masterrsquos program will be established in West Africa in cooperation with local partners Here methodological and practical knowledge about the IPBES program will be shared at the interface between science and policy making The aim is to attract as many students as possible from the 15 West African countries involved

Accelerating agricultural growth and ending hunger in Africa The Malabo Montpellier PanelApril 26 2017 The newly founded Malabo Montpellier Panel consisting of leading agriculture and food security experts from Africa and Europe are determined to achieve the goals set by the African Union to curb poverty and hunger within the next decade Professor Joachim von Braun one of the Panelrsquos co-chairs said ldquoAgriculture has an enormous potential to drive development and transform rural areas in Africa Jobs are urgently needed for rural youth in particular Young entrepreneurs and women including the next generation of farmers must be supported with better education and vocational trainingrdquo More information about the Malabo Montpellier Panel its members and contact information can be found here

New DAAD Sur-Place Stipend Program for GGCDSMay 2017 The DAAD has selected the Institute for Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER) as a host institution of its West African Sur-Placein-Region stipend program ISSER and ZEF have successfully run a PhD program in Development Studies at the University of Ghana called ldquoGhanaian-German Center for Development Studies (GGCDS)rdquo since 2008 Together students from Ghana and other African countries will be sponsored for four years each to obtain their PhD in development studies Read more about the program here

ldquoOne Health and Urban Transformationsrdquo debutSeptember 6 2017 The new graduate program (Fortschrittskolleg) known as ldquoOne Health and Urban Transformationsrdquo kicked-off their first seminar at ZEF The 13 One Health students presented their research proposals to an interdisciplinary audience of ZEF senior researchers professors and scientists from the University of Bonn UNU-EHS and HBRS and representatives of the NRW Ministry of Culture and Science More information about their ongoing projects can be found on their website

Symposium at the University of TokyoSeptember 18-22 2017 The cooperation between ZEF and the International Program in Agricultural Development Studies (IPADS) of the University of Tokyo has been strengthened by a joint Symposium on ldquoOne Health for Africa and Asiardquo which was opened by a lecture by ZEF director Christian Borgemeister Dr Manfred Denich (ZEFc senior researcher) was invited to give lectures in the IPADS introductory course for master and doctoral students The lectures covered inter- and transdisciplinary development research traditional and modern forest-based land-use systems (from research to action) as well as reflections on scientific collaboration between the global north and south Furthermore future joint activities of ZEF and IPADS such as a joint graduate school were discussed with the IPADS director Prof Kensuke Okada

ZEF researchers at the Lindau Meeting on Economic SciencesAugust 22-26 2017 Three of our Ethiopian researchers Dr Mekbib Haile Mr Essa Chanie Mussa and Mr Tekalign Gutu Sakketa were selected to participate in the prestigious 6th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences Nineteen Nobel laureates in economics met with 400 young economists from all over the world at the conference This opportunity is given only to outstanding young scientists who have to pass a highly competitive multi-step selection process

African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF)September 4-8 2017 Joachim von Braun (ZEFb director) Heike Baumuumlller (PARI coordinator) Oliver Kirui and Justice Tambo (both ZEFb senior researchers) participated in the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) in Abidjan Ivory Coast Joachim von Braun facilitated the side event co-organized by ZEF on ldquoTargeting innovation investments for agricultural growth and food securityrdquo that took place on 5th September 5 2017 and where PARI project partners from Ghana Senegal and India were invited to assume a speakeracutes role

Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research

Under Bonn Universityrsquos leadership the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability Research was launched during the COP23 A number of regional research institutes signed an agreement to promote research on innovation and technology for a sustainable future Members include next to ZEF faculties from the University of Bonn German Development Institute (DIE) United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) and the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg Read more about the Bonn Alliance for Sustainability research on the University of Bonnrsquos website

University of Bonnrsquos 200th anniversary (1818-2018)The jubilee year of the University of Bonn will officially be inaugurated on January 16 2018 with a special opening event The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn to which ZEF belongs has become one of Germanyrsquos largest universities with about 38000 students Some 3600 international students from over 130 countries and a large number of foreign guest lecturers including more than 100 Humboldt fellows per year study teach and conduct research at the university Bonn University is internationally recognized for the achievements of its approximately 550 professors 2500 scientific and 4700 non-scientific staff and it has international cooperations with many universities including Florence Jerusalem Kyoto New South Wales New York Toulouse Waseda Warsaw and Prague Read more about the upcoming celebration events here httpswww200jahreuni-bonndedeenglish

Funding programs for DAAD alumni

The DAAD Alumni program continues to support former DAAD scholarship holders Various funding and training opportunities are available for DAAD scholars such as grants for equipment and materials and training programs in Germany The offers can be found on the DAAD website under ldquofunding programmes for foreign alumnirdquo One such funding opportunity is called the ldquoRe-invitation Programme for Former Scholarship Holdersrdquo DAAD offers former scholarship holders the chance to conduct research or take up employment in Germany for up to three months and maintain their academic and professional contacts In order to apply former scholars will need to have support from ZEF and BIGS-DR Interested applicants should contact Dr Guumlnther Manske our Academic Coordinator for a letter of support Application procedures can be found on their website here More information is available at the website of the DAAD development cooperation
