Continuing Education

I am pleased to present to you our new vision for Continuing Dental Education (CDE) at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Dentistry. The Drive for Top Five will attempt to bring

the faculty to a higher level of recognition as one of the top five dental schools in North America.

Included in this very ambitious program is the revamping of Continuing Dental Education by expanding its offerings to include interprofessional education, electronic and web-based learning environments, blended vacation-educational venues, and “on-demand” programs.

These will complement the traditional lecture and “hands-on” program formats.

In addition, conversations are underway to establish international partnerships throughout Latin America with other dental schools, to deliver programs to new target audiences and constituencies and promote

faculty, student and scholarly exchange. Thus, it is a very exciting time for us at the faculty, as we hope to make a significant impact on our dental profession.

However, the goal of being the best cannot be accomplished without your input and participation.

I want to personally extend to you an invitation to share with us your thoughts, comments and ideas on the type of programs you would like to see offered as part of our platform.

Not only will it assist us in conceptualizing and implementing programs to fit your specific needs, but will also help our dentists and students expand their professional realm and achieve excellence.

I wish you success in 2008, and look forward to meeting and speaking to you personally. If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns, please contact me any time.

Up Front

a gala beginningGolden Anniversary year off to a flying start

The Faculty of Dentistry’s Drive for Top Five gala celebration paid tribute to its past while setting the stage for a bold vision of the future.

In a gathering that featured the who’s who of the provincial dental community and many high profile guests, the February 1 event at the Fairmont Hotel was as much about substance as it was about style.

The evening’s focus offered a tribute to the past while showcasing the Drive for Top Five, the vision to establish the University of Manitoba as one of the top five dental schools in North America.

“We dedicate our efforts to those that came before us,” Dr. Anthony M. Iacopino said in his remarks to the 300 persons in attendance. “It’s all about people coming together with a collective spirit doing things that have never been done before.”

Dean Iacopino outlined this vision in the keynote address to an audience made up of alumni and high ranking members of the university and Manitoba business community.

The key to the success of the plan, he said, is to build upon the traditional areas of excellence – such as research, community outreach and education – upon which the faculty has excelled over the years.

“We are a highly motivated, cohesive and ambitious faculty,” he said, “To

reach our goal we will need to work together.”

During his address, Dean Iacopino offered the audience a preview of the latest in dental education technology, the Digital Dental System.

“The DDS is quite simply incredible, first-of-its-kind technology,” Dean Iacopino said of the cutting-edge, 3D body mapping system. “Our faculty could play a leading role in what we believe will be the future of dental education in North America.”

The DDS is also one of Dean Iacopino’s Nine Pillars of Excellence and Innovation, the foundation upon which the Drive for Top Five will be built.

The pillars include the creation of the world’s first Centre for Oral-Systemic Health and re-energizing the faculty’s oral biology section, a historically renowned area.

“Our oral biology program must maintain its position of prominence to enhance the reputation of the department within and outside of the university,” he said. “We have to be seen as the place where the action is; where the young professional comes to begin a career; where current professionals go to continue their education; where world class researchers want to be.”

Dr. Iacopino’s sentiments were echoed

by Dr. Emőke Szathmáry, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, who noted that the Drive for Top Five was “truly a laudable goal.”

Dr. Szathmáry also offered a few reflections on the faculty’s five decades of history during her address to those assembled.

“For a time, the first Dean of Dentistry, Dr. Jack Neilson, had his office located in the basement of the Psychiatric Institute,” Dr. Szathmáry noted. “According to Dr. Neilson, (then U of M) President Saunderson thought it was ‘a most appropriate place for a Dean’s office.’”

More historical perspective was provided by Dr. Sam Borden, a long-time faculty instructor, one-time acting Dean and host for the evening.

“I’m here to offer a brief history of the Faculty of Dentistry, which I’m told I have 10 minutes to do,” Dr. Borden said. “This is impossible.”

Instead, Dr. Borden focused on the early years of the faculty, those under the tenure of Dean Nielson who remained in office for almost 20 years.

Later that evening came a special presentation of a commemorative artwork from Dr. Taras Snihurowycz, one of the original faculty graduates from the Class of 1962. Dr. Snihurowycz, who is also a renowned Winnipeg artist, offered his unique iconic treatment of the faculty’s new logo – a presentation that drew thunderous applause from the crowd.

The good doctor and 1998 Alumni of Distinction winner then followed with a special artwork presentation to Dr. Szathmáry and another for Ms Edith Williams, who was also in attendance.

A long-time member of the Dean’s office staff, Ms Williams received a standing ovation from the crowd in tribute to her many years of loyal and dedicated service during the formative years of the faculty.

The Drive for Top Five gala is the first in what will be a series of events that will take place over the calendar year to mark the faculty’s Golden Anniversary and to forward the goals of the drive.

The next event takes place Friday, April 25 with Traditions of Excellence in Oral Research, featuring an impressive line-up of speakers and presentations.

This will be followed by the Dentistry at the Downs family event Sunday afternoon, June 8 at Assiniboia Downs. •

a blast for the Past Celebrations begin at Brodie

Billed as a Blast for the Past and a Launch into the Future, students, faculty and staff gathered together on January 9. It marked the first of

what Dean Anthony Iacopino said will be a series of events to mark the Faculty of Dentistry’s 50th anniversary, the milestone event for the faculty that accepted its first class in 1958.

“We wanted to start the year with something for our faculty members, students and staff, to really get them involved and into the spirit,” Dr. Iacopino said.

Amid a montage of photos from the past that decorated the Brodie Centre atrium, Japanese drum group Hinode Taiko got things rolling with a 15-minute set before an estimated gathering of over 200.

The event also included the roll-out of the new faculty logo plus an overview of the Drive for Top Five – the vision to establish the University of Manitoba as one of the top five dental schools in North America.•

Alumni of Distinction

Partners, friends, role models, WinnersCo-winners of dentistry annual award share common bonds

Jan Brown and Gene Solmundson have enjoyed successful and remarkably similar career paths. So it is perhaps only logical, if not altogether fitting,

that the two long-time friends, business partners and community role models would share the spotlight in the Faculty of Dentistry’s most prestigious award.

Drs. Brown and Solmundson were named co-winners of the Faculty of Dentistry Alumni of Distinction award for 2008.

Dr. Ellen Brownstone was named Alumni of Distinction award winner for the School of Dental Hygiene at the January 31 ceremony that took place at the Manitoba Dental Association annual convention in Winnipeg.

“I was re-awakened to the fact that Gene and Jan have traveled such similar paths from the time they grew up in South Winnipeg,” noted Dr. Les Allen who presented the awards to both practitioners at the faculty’s alumni luncheon. “Gene and Jan were both born and raised in

Winnipeg, attended Kelvin High School and were founding members of the Assiniboine Dental Group.”

Dr. Allen went on to articulate the long list of accomplishments achieved by both men through more than four decades of service in the Manitoba dental community.

After establishing his practice at the Assiniboine Dental Group (ADG), Dr. Brown served as a part-time faculty instructor for close to 30 years in addition to holding executive positions with the Winnipeg Dental Society and Manitoba Dental Association.

Dr. Brown is also a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and member of the National Dental Examining Board.

His public persona was defined by a long and illustrious tenure as an executive member of the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers. As a member of the executive board, and later club president, Dr. Brown steered the club through the

made in manitoba Keystone province produces strong dental brand

It might be one of the best-kept secrets in Canada. Fact is, the province of Manitoba could well be

the best place in the nation when it comes to dentistry and dental services in Canada.

To verify, consider the testimony of Dr. Gene Solmundson. Among his many achievements, Dr. Solmundson, (co-recipient of the Faculty of Dentistry’s Alumni of the Distinction award) spent over a decade as a member of the National Dental Examining board. From this vantage point Dr. Solmundson was able to compare the work of Manitoba practitioners with that of their colleagues across the country.

“And we are pleased to report that Manitoba grads can hold their heads high,” he told the crowd of some 1,200 assembled at the faculty’s alumni luncheon on January 31. “In dentistry, made in Manitoba is a good label.”

Dr. Solmundson noted that the combination of high quality education, a strong connection to the faculty and a relatively small number of practitioners offers individuals the opportunity to step in and have a significant impact on the profession and the community.

“In fact, we in Manitoba enjoy the best of everything dentally,” he said. “This is where, as an individual, your views, your efforts can make a difference. At this alumni luncheon, we are all dentistry and, for the vast majority of us, made in Manitoba. I think we should be proud of it.” •

often tumultuous CFL waters that led to financial stability for the franchise along with a Grey Cup championship in 1984.

“His continuous involvement with the Bombers and the CFL led to many awards including induction into the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame,” Dr. Allen noted, “and receiving the award from the commissioner for service to the CFL.”

Dr. Brown’s community involvement also extended to other large, high profile community events including the World Junior Hockey Championships and, most recently, the World Women’s Hockey Championships.

“Jan is dedicated and determined; an organized go-getter and an individual I’m proud to call my friend,” Dr. Allen said.

In response, Dr. Brown remained modest, noting his pleasure on sharing the stage with his long-time partner and confidant.

“Gene and I have been partners for 39 years,” Dr. Brown said. “He has been my mentor and, more importantly, an extremely close friend who was always there whenever I needed support. We have both benefited from a work environment which encouraged us to give back to dentistry and the community.”

Similar to his colleague and partner, Gene Solmundson has established a long list of achievements, both within the profession and the community as well.

As a founding partner in the ADG, Dr. Solmundson helped build one of the longest serving and successful practices in Winnipeg. He then went on to a distinguished career that included executive appointments on Winnipeg and Manitoba dental bodies and establishing a strong presence on the national dental stage.

In 1972, Dr. Solmundson became the official dentist of professional hockey in Manitoba. He served with the National Hockey League’s Winnipeg Jets throughout the team’s stay in the city before assuming a similar role with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

As well, Dr. Solmundson led a very active life of community involvement in local events that played on the world stage, including the Pan-Am Games several years ago.

“When Gene led some of us 360 dentists, hygienists, assistants and receptionists in providing dental services to the

athletes, coaches and whomever else required treatment during the Pan-Am Games, he really demonstrated his persuasive, organizational ability,” Dr. Allen noted.

Drs. Brown and Solmundson join an elite list of alumni that include such past recipients as Drs. Marshall Peikoff, Lorne Golub, Serge Vanry, Les Allen and Don MacFarlane, among others.

Both men acknowledged those that nominated them for the award, with Dr. Solmundson noting the significant achievements of those that were honoured before them.

“We happen to know each of the previous recipients and are aware of their lofty accomplishments and contributions,” he said. “I have to say we are truly humbled to be in their company. Putting us together as the daily double ticket must have been a factor in our selection, as neither of us felt that we stood tall enough alone to be worthy of this honour.” •

the new face of dentistryDigital Dental System debuts in special demonstration

The future of dental education touched down – if only for a short time – at the University

of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry in late January. It came in the form of the Digital Dental System, or DDS, an amazing, new 3D educational platform that many believe will set a new standard in dental education.

Faculty, students and local media assembled to witness a demonstration from Dr. Robert Hasel, DDS, of Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ, one of the driving forces behind the project. In addition to a display and hands-on demonstration, Dr. Hasel expanded on the ramifications that this new technology could have on all aspects of dental and medical education and patient treatment.

“It’s not just a paradigm shift, this is a new reality,” Dr. Hasel said. “We’re changing the culture of anatomical information; how we teach it, how we diagnose and how we treatment plan. I call it a revolution.”

The DDS offers self-paced learning, interactivity and an incredible 3D simulation with haptic feedback that allows students performing dental work on virtual patients to actually feel the sensations.

“This system incorporates all existing tools and improves upon the simulation environment by providing tactile sensation and virtual patient scenarios in a true “gaming”

environment,” said Dr. Anthony M.

Iacopino, Dean of Dentistry at the U

of M. “This is an

outstanding opportunity for the University of

Manitoba to take the lead and establish a new standard

in dental education.”This new approach is now in

the beta testing stage and is only being offered to a limited number of dental schools in North America for final development and design.

“The University of Manitoba Faculty of Dentistry has been chosen to be one of these schools based on its reputation for excellence and innovation,” Dr. Iacopino said.

“This will put our university on the cutting-edge of curriculum design and represents a significant competitive advantage for the future,”

The digital-virtual curriculum is also one of the Nine Pillars of Innovation that is the centre of the faculty’s 2008 Drive for Top Five. •

Just how much can be learned from 3D digital imaging technology? Dr. Robert Hasel shared this story from the anthropology department of Arizona State University.

It began when a research scientist received some premolars that had been extracted from the daughter of a colleague.

The researcher matched each irregularity in the striations against the young woman’s medical history.

“Every single medical event turned up in her enamel,” Dr. Hasel recalled, “when she broke her arm, when she had strep throat, when she was out with the flu.

They could match it on a graph.”Still, one striation was in a different

alignment. The researcher couldn’t account for it as it wasn’t in the child’s medical history. So, the question was posed.

“What happened to your daughter at age nine years, three months and 21

days?” the researcher asked. His colleague stopped and stared at him

before he spoke.“That’s when her mother and I got a

divorce,” he said. •

art in science

On February 25, the Faculty of Dentistry, under the direction and guidance of Dr. Tammy Bonstein, presented Artistic Images in Dental Research, a display of vibrant and colourful

images derived from dental research, at the Bannatyne campus.Close to 50 images were on display at this unique exhibition in

the Basic Medical Sciences building. Titles include Silhouettes, The Ocean at Night and Silicon Drop in the exhibit that was presented following the faculty’s first Research Day that featured the work of student researchers. Dr. George Bowden gave a special address on the topic of Art In Science before the gathering of roughly 75 people. Student and professional academic researchers presented an impressive body of work during the day-long event. Speakers for Research Day were chosen to highlight the broad spectrum of research interests in the faculty and to emphasize student-driven research. The event was kindly sponsored by Johnson & Johnson.

Research Day and the Art in Science exhibit are all part of the Faculty of Dentistry’s 50th year Anniversary Celebration and 2008 Drive for Top Five. The next event takes place on Friday, April 25, as the faculty is pleased to present Traditions of Excellence in Oral Research (see back page). •

candy cane classicSubmitted by Cathy Watt

The first Candy Cane Classic Curling Bonspiel was held in mid-December at the Stonewall

Curling Club. The bonspiel was part of the holiday celebrations for the Centre for Community Oral Health and the Department of Preventive Dental Science organized by CCOH.

For many, it was their first time ever curling! With the help of a few experienced curlers and the course coordinator (Slyp Slyding Awy, a.k.a. Dr. Brothwell) for PDSD 101 (Curling Fundamentals), everyone was ready to go.

There were four teams in the bonspiel and each team went home with prizes. Afterwards, a potluck dinner was held along with games and a gift exchange. All in all, it was a great evening.

Special thanks to Dr. Brothwell for his great PowerPoint presentation, Sharon Brothwell who kept the kitchen together for the potluck portion of the evening and to Roxanne Bahsler for the creative invitations and for organizing the party. •

Congratulations to Xiaoming Xiang, a current MSc student in the Department of Oral Biology,

for his recent success in receiving the prestigious CIHR Graduate Scholarship Master’s Award – one of only four graduate students in Manitoba to receive this honour.

The research project Xiaoming plans to work on with his supervisor Dr. Kan-Zhi Liu for this award is “Infrared Spectroscopy - A New Diagnostic Tool for Periodontitis.”

The scientific background for this interdisciplinary project is based on the inadequacies of current diagnostic techniques. There is currently a need to develop a non-invasive diagnostic technique for periodontitis that can be used as a screening tool for the general population.

Infrared spectroscopy has the potential to be used for routine screening of asymptomatic subjects, to define disease-active and disease-inactive sites, and, perhaps, to predict disease susceptibility.

Therefore, the major goal for this long-term project is to verify whether infrared spectroscopy could be ideally suited

as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in inflammatory periodontal disease.

Upon receiving news of the award, the Office of Research Services at the University of Manitoba immediately sent a congratulatory message.

A similar message was also sent by Faculty of Dentistry Dean, Dr. Anthony Iacopino, who emphasized that research is an important priority of the faculty. Dr. Iacopino also noted how inspiring it is to see our students succeed in their research endeavours.

Currently, this study is kindly supported by NSERC/CIHR and by NIH. The accomplishments so far testify to a highly successful and productive collaboration between the Institute for Biodiagnostics,

National Research Council Canada (Drs. Liu, Sowa, Xiang and Ms Man), the University of Manitoba (Drs. Cholakis, Ghiabi and Singer) and the

University of Louisville (Dr. Scott). All are confident that this exciting project will be a

successful one that has the potential to provide significant health benefits for Canadians. •

Where careers beginDiscovery Days has history of driving dental enrollment

When it comes to driving enrollment at the Faculty of Dentistry, few events seem able to match the track record of Pfizer Day. The day-long, dent-fest has a remarkable history of stirring student interest in pursuing careers in oral health.

In November, the faculty played host to roughly 60 senior high school students who are considering a health care career. Students in third and fourth-year dentistry and second-year dental hygiene assisted with the various activities held in the Brass Lab. Among those on the tour this time was Dan Zettler of Portage Collegiate in Portage la Prairie, seen here under the guidance of Jeanne Trinh (at right), a second-year dental hygiene student. Dan is the brother of third-year student Peter Zettler.

It’s just the latest example of how the day encourages students to consider a career in oral health, said Dr. Nita Mazurat, who coordinates the event on behalf of the faculty.

“Several dental students were participants in Pfizer Day,” she said, “and remember it as being one of the factors that influenced their career decision.” •

The Faculty of Dentistry is looking for new team members for this year’s CIBC Run for the Cure, October 5 at the Forks. Ideas for our new team name are also welcome. Last year, the faculty team (pictured left) raised $740 for

breast cancer and it was great to see everyone out in support of a great cause. Thanks to Cathy Carroll (Dent II) for helping get all the students involved. We also want to thank Dr. Lekic for joining our team and hope he will be able to walk with us again. We look forward to getting another team out for the 2008 run. •

It is difficult to imagine a better beginning for a truly wonderful event. Our 50th anniversary year got off to a rollicking start with our Drive for Top Five gala celebration

at the beautiful Winnipeg ballroom at the Fairmont Hotel on February 1.

This event drew together an all-star cast of key players from our faculty’s past, present and future in what we believe may be a watershed moment for us all.

Our first graduating class – the Class of 1962 – was represented, courtesy of our friend and artistic master, Dr. Taras Snihurowycz, who presented the faculty with a stylized version of our new school logo.

Going one step further, Dr. Snihurowycz also presented Dr. Emőke Szathmáry, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manitoba with a customized work in yet another stunning display of his considerable artistic talents.

Dr. Sam Borden presided over the affair with the style and grace that we have all come to expect and appreciate from our faculty’s longest-serving lecturer.

Dr. Borden offered a short recap of the achievements of the early days of the faculty under the guidance of Dr. Jack Neilson, adding an important historical perspective to the occasion.

Alumni from throughout our five decades dotted the crowd, providing a sense of warmth and sincerity that was palpable to all throughout the evening.

From all over came the major players in the province’s political and financial realm – all gathered together to help us celebrate our past and to learn more about this great new challenge that lies before us.

We welcomed the presence and support from all levels of government, including Mr. Bidu Jha who re-affirmed his government’s commitment to helping us realize the many goals and targets at which we are now taking aim.

The presence of Mr. Hugh McFayden and Dr. Jon Gerrard was also welcome and significant. This ensures all of Manitoba’s political heavyweights are aware of our plans to establish a new centre of excellence within the Keystone province.

Members of the provincial financial sector were represented in strong numbers on February 1. Forging links and partnerships with this community will be a crucial element in our Drive for Top Five.

Already, many of these influential organizations have indicated they are very interested in participating to help us begin construction of the Nine Pillars of Excellence and Innovation that will be the foundation of our drive to national and international prominence.

These pillars will be better defined and discussed as our activities continue over the next few months as we progress through this most exciting year.

With this in mind, I am proud to announce Symposia 50 – a new series of special events and activities to

celebrate and promote our school’s history of achievement in teaching, community outreach and research.

These events will provide a forum for discussion and the further development of our Nine Pillars.

We would be thrilled with your involvement and participation in any and all of these events as we continue our drive toward top five status.

It starts Friday, April 25 as the Faculty of Dentistry hosts Traditions of Excellence in Oral Research.

On Sunday, June 8, the faculty is pleased to present Dentistry at the Downs, our first family-oriented event.

It is difficult to articulate how much I appreciate the teamwork and support we have received thus far.

For those who participated in our most recent successes, I hope you all feel pride in what we are able to accomplish as a team. Your collective abilities and excellence have come shining through, allowing the faculty to take a giant step forward.

Faculty of Dentistry Dean, Dr. Anthony M. Iacopino, accompanied by Drs. Doug Brothwell, Billy Wiltshire, and James Noble, traveled north to the Churchill Regional

Health Authority last October. Dr. Iacopino and the team paid a visit to the Centre for

Community Oral Health (CCOH) dental clinic, toured the health care complex, and provided orthodontic screenings for area youth. In all, the faculty team conducted screening on 26 patients, with all in need of follow-up intervention.

The Churchill project is one of many outreach programs administered by CCOH, the community outreach arm of the Faculty of Dentistry. Dean Iacopino, who hails from the somewhat less frigid climes of New Jersey, was reportedly thrilled by the experience.

“My wife Sharon and I did manage to summon up the courage to hit the Tundra Buggy and saw many polar bears, arctic foxes, arctic hares, and ptarmigan in their natural habitat,” he said. “It was an adventure of a lifetime!” •

Reunions Unlimited

Submitted by Sandy Mutchmor (83)

Twenty-five years ago, a group of young adults enthusiastically celebrated graduating as the latest batch of University of

Manitoba-trained dentists. Surviving together, the ups and downs

of the four years of intense schooling had created a class famous for its closeness, both in and beyond dental school.

Since that fateful day, there have been many fishing trips, the annual “Hardman Classic” golf tournament, Halloween parties and just about any other reason you can think of to get together.

But there has also been a special appeal to celebrating the special anniversaries: our tenth at Hecla, our twentieth at the MDA Convention, and now our 25 year anniversary at the Faculty of Dentistry’s Tropical Series in the Mayan Riviera, Mexico.

From the time we met at the airport early on the Saturday morning, every one was well aware of the 14 people from the Class of 83 with the crazy matching shirts.

It didn’t take very long for us to be noticed around the resort either with our entourage of 25 often showing up together for dinner or taking over the swim-up bar with our custom thermal

mugs. On the Tuesday night, Lorne Acheson

was the music man, resurrecting the “Buzzby Sound” as we took over the disco for an old fashioned 80’s party.

Dan VanBerkel showed up as “Weird Al”, I did my best Don Johnson (from

Miami Vice), Dave Riediger donned his old clinic coat with the original student name bar and Betty Dunsmore stuffed her belly to remind us of her pregnancy in fourth year.

The next day was the first ever “Hardman International” as 11 of us hit the links for a wonderful round of golf

(apparently all-inclusive also applies to the beer cart on the course!).

But it wasn’t all sun and games. With spouses included, our class was responsible for nearly half of the crowd that enjoyed the interesting continuing education lectures from Dr. Denis Lynch (Oral Cancers) and faculty dean, Dr. Anthony Iacopino (The Perio-Systemic Connection).

The week wound down with one final team dinner and the “Tequila Scream” challenge from Dean Iacopino (apologies to anyone else in the restaurant).

Although several of us tried, we were clearly no match for the Dean, who prevailed over all. However, knowing our class as I do, his reign as champion may soon be over.

Perhaps our reunions will have to start happening yearly. •

If you weren’t at our recent CE Tropical Series in the Mayan Riviera, Mexico, you may wish you were. In our seventh, exciting year, participants were treated to five star resorts, great weather, and first-class lectures.

Dr. Denis Lynch (Marquette University) led off with “The Diagnosis and Treatment of Salivary Gland Disease and Oral Cancer” followed by “The Perio-Systemic Connection” with Dr. Anthony Iacopino.

Feedback on Dr. Lynch’s course included “fantastic teaching skills,” and “very good speaker, great humor!”

Dr. Iacopino’s lecture feedback included “very important for the average dentist,” and “paradigm shift – to think outside tradition.”

Other comments on the 2008 Series:“As for Mexico, it was wonderful!

The lectures were top-notch and the resort was a paradise!” said Dr. Martin and Tammy Laboissonniere.

“The well-run and enjoyable dental lecture series is the bonus that makes it a great vacation,” said Dr. Chris Cottick.

Participants and their families took shopping trips into Playa del Carmen, relaxed around the pool, and walked the sandy white beaches of the Caribbean.

Others took up Dean Iacopino’s invitation for deep sea fishing and none

were disappointed. If you’d like to join in on the fun,

and/or plan your class reunion at our 2009 Tropical Series, please visit our Continuing Dental Education web s ite:umanitoba.ca/dentistry/cde for destination and course updates.

You can look forward to enhanced vocational and collegial exchange experiences in such settings as Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

We look forward to seeing you! •

It was late afternoon, after five, a few days into the CE Tropical Series. The beach crowd was thinning out as people headed to their rooms to prepare for dinner. Lifeguards were off duty and had vacated the beach.

A Class of 83 Reunion member, Dave Regehr (right) was on the beach, packing up from an afternoon of kite boarding, entertaining those on shore by maneuvering his kite board over the big surf pushed in by the strong Caribbean winds.

It was then Dr. Regehr heard cries for help coming from an area down the beach known to have riptides. Warning buoys indicating the danger had been ripped away by the crashing ocean waves. A man, (Joe) and his two boys playing in the surf had ventured too close and Joe and his youngest boy suddenly found themselves being dragged out to sea. Without hesitation and regard for his own safety, Dr. Regehr moved swiftly to help the family. He reached the older boy and told him to swim to where he could safely touch bottom. He then swam to the eight-year-old and got him to safety.

“I then turned my attention to the struggling father who, by this time, had been carried quite a distance out by the riptide. As I reached him, I saw he had become exhausted as he attempted

to stay afloat to catch his breath in the big surf. Joe had become quite sure he was going to die. Taking charge of a panicking victim is always a risk, but in crashing surf with no towing buoy in a rip tide, the risk goes up exponentially. Towing Joe, facing him using a side stroke was safe but slow, and we were still being dragged out by the rip. I had to change the course of action and decided to let Joe grab a hold of me. Once we reorganized, I had to pound out some serious distance before Joe and our situation became any more desperate. It proved effective but Joe would become panicked for air when bigger sets of waves crashed over us. The attempts at more air for Joe meant no air for me and after many of these sets, I had to stop and

reassure Joe that I was not going to leave him out there or let him drown. I remember thinking there was no way I was going to go back and face those kids without him. I kept remembering their cries: ‘You’ve got to save my dad, my dad is drowning!’ After about 20 minutes, which seemed like an eternity, we made it to shore, to the joy of the family waiting on the beach.Overwhelmed and teary, the kids cried ‘I want to thank you and God that you were out there today because if you weren’t, I wouldn’t have a father.’”

Passion fosters career growthAlumna’s success began at School of Dental Hygiene

It is often the nature of post-secondary education to leave an indelible mark on the student who undergoes the experience. Such was the case for Dr. Ellen Brownstone. The 2008 Alumni of Distinction award winner for the School

of Dental Hygiene has enjoyed considerable success as an academic administrator. Not the least of which was spending 13 years as the Director of the School of Dental Hygiene through the course of two terms in office.

Dr. Brownstone would then head off for a one-year tour of duty in Ottawa as the assistant executive director of the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA).

Upon returning to Winnipeg, Dr. Brownstone became vice president, academic, of Winnipeg Technical College, a position she currently occupies. She also completed her PhD in interdisciplinary studies at the University of Manitoba in 1999.

It’s a considerable resume of achievement that all began, she says, back at the School of Dental Hygiene here at the U of M.

“I have not been active in dental hygiene for the past 10 years,” she recalled while accepting her award at the Faculty of Dentistry Alumni Luncheon staged during the Manitoba Dental Association’s annual convention. “But I certainly feel that my career in dental hygiene is what has guided me in life, professionally, and to a large extent, personally.”

Dr. Brownstone graduated from the School of Dental Hygiene in 1976, assuming a faculty position two years later, first as an instructor, then as an assistant and later as an associate professor. In 1983, Dr. Brownstone became the third Director of the School of Dental Hygiene.

For well over a decade, Dr. Brownstone worked diligently to advance the school while also serving as a role model and inspiration to faculty and students alike.

She was described as a mentor by those who nominated her for the award, according to Prof. Salme Lavigne, current school director.

“Two of the three nominees describe Ellen as their mentor, instilling in them the passion, the drive and the motivation to pursue further education,” Prof. Lavigne noted. “Her dedication to serving the oral health needs of the public was highlighted as well as her drive to pursue baccalaureate education for dental hygienists. Ellen’s many accomplishments have brought distinction and honour to the University of Manitoba through her teaching, professional and community service, as well as her leadership.”

Dr. Brownstone’s list of credits include serving as a delegate of the CDHA on the International Federation of Dental Hygiene as well as being a member of the editorial review board for the CDHA journal.

In receiving the award, Dr. Brownstone said she was grateful for the opportunity to help grow the profession in Manitoba and across Canada.

“I certainly did not perceive to be recognized in this manner for doing work over a period of 20-plus years that I clearly enjoyed doing and brought me incredible challenges as well as great satisfaction,” she said. “I have been able to form lasting working relationships and friendships with dental hygienists across provinces and across several countries.

“It is truly an honour to be recognized by my treasured colleagues.” •

This past February, I had the honour and the privilege of presenting this year’s Dental Hygiene Alumni

of Distinction award to one of my predecessors, Dr. Ellen Brownstone.

Dr. Brownstone’s career, as you see chronicled in this edition of the Bulletin, was one that took our colleague to a number of different and exciting places, both figuratively and literally.

Dr. Brownstone’s experiences could serve as a reminder to us all that your profession is what you make of it.

The demand for dental hygienists in Manitoba far outreaches the supply of available professionals. This is particularly true for rural regions of this province as well as in non-traditional settings in both rural and urban centers.

The future looks bright for the profession as more opportunities arise in community health settings due to new legislative change. Creating new opportunities in community health agencies is up to us as these agencies will need to be convinced of the benefits of our services. In this new role, we, as dental hygienists, need to lead the way to initiate and create these new practice opportunities.

We need to lead the way in providing more access to care for Manitobans now that this is a legal reality for us.

We also hope to see more extended educational opportunities for dental hygienists here at the School of Dental Hygiene, to access further education at the bachelors, master’s and even PhD levels.

The Faculty of Dentistry’s newly proposed Centre for Oral Systemic Health will include the participation and education of dental hygienists.

This is indeed an exciting time for dental hygienists to expand their horizons and to reach new professional heights.

Opportunities also exist within our professional associations and the School of Dental Hygiene. The Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association, for example, is always in need of helping hands.

Additionally, the School of Dental Hygiene, invites you to participate in our new mentorship program for incoming students this fall. Interested professionals would agree to be a mentor for one or two students over their two years of education. You would be their professional contact, invite them to observe you in practice and be there to answer practice-

related questions. Please contact me at the school if you

are interested in this golden opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our students, your future colleagues.

Dr. Brownstone seized many of these types of opportunities as they presented themselves and, as a result, has enjoyed an exceptional career, one that should serve as an example to all dental hygienists. The message behind Dr. Brownstone’s success is that anything can happen, if you put your mind to it!

The School of Dental Hygiene is pleased to announce that a new staff member has joined our team.

Amanda Shawcross is now the new office assistant for the School of Dental Hygiene reporting to administrative assistant, Lisa Chrusch. Amanda will be responsible for office duties and reception services and can be contacted directly at 789-3683 with Lisa now at 272-3062.

Please join me in welcoming Amanda to the dental hygiene team! •

All About Alumni

change at the topDr. Ron Peterson steps down, Dr. Scott Leckie named interim head of MDAA

By Dr. Ron Peterson

About 24 years ago, the former president of the University of Manitoba Dr. Arnold Naimark

told me jokingly, "Ron, you'll have to serve as president of the Dental Alumni Association until you do the job right." Well, I guess it took me 28 years before I would finally succeed.

All kidding aside, serving as the president of the Manitoba Dental Alumni Association (MDAA) for the past 28 years has been an honor and a privilege. What edified me in the administration of alumni affairs was the opportunity to collaborate with so many dedicated and talented people in the Faculty of Dentistry, School of Dental Hygiene, the University of Manitoba and the private sector.

My vision of an alumni president and board has now been actualized. The importance and value of having an active, consolidated and effective dental alumni body is to represent us now and to propel us into the future.

The Manitoba Dental Alumni Association is very important to our faculty. Among other things, it raises essential funds for the faculty.

Over the past 28 years, monies raised by the MDAA and alumni have reached the seven-figure dollar mark.

The MDAA is the glue that binds our dental faculty to its graduates, and the graduates to each other. It provides direct support in a variety of ways to the faculty, the students, alumni members, dental associations and, indirectly, to the public.

Today there is now a movement towards a much stronger bond and working relationship between the Faculty of Dentistry, the Manitoba Dental Association, and the Manitoba Dental Alumni Association.

Our new Dean, Dr. Anthony M. Iacopino is a strong supporter of this bond, and of the alumni.

I wish our new MDAA president and the new board members all the best. Dr. Scott Leckie was my alumni secretary for

18 years and I am confident he will excel in this post.

I fully give my support to the growth of dentistry in service to the public of Manitoba.

On behalf of my wife Renata and myself I wish to say thank you to all alumni, the faculty, the Manitoba Dental Association, and the Canadian Dental Association for their support over the last 28 years.

I also want to offer my sincere gratitude to the Manitoba Dental Association for presenting me with the Volunteer Award.

Thank you as well to Dean Anthony M. Iacopino and Associate Dean Dr. Jack Stockton for your very kind letters of appreciation. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Taras Snihurowycz for his captivating icon of the Madonna and Child.

On a final note, I would like to share with you something that I have learned over the years: "It is in giving that one receives so much more."

Thank you and God Bless. •

After 28 years on the job, Dr. Ron Peterson decided that the time had come. Late in 2007, the long-time president of the Manitoba Dental Alumni Association (MDAA) announced his

plans to step down from the post he has held for over a quarter of a century.

Dr. Peterson said that it was an honor to have served as association president of the MDAA adding that it was an appropriate time to step down.

At the MDAA general meeting in late January, Dr. Gene Solmundson, Chair of the Nomination and Election Process, indicated that an interim president and board of directors needed to be established until a formal election process was approved by the members of the provincial association.

As a result, Dr. Scott Leckie was nominated as the interim president. Interim board members include Drs. Heinz Scherle, Jean Bodnar, Cory Sul, Walter Nider, Kyle Gauthier, Chris Cottick and Igor Pesun. These members will develop the mission statement, goals, constitution and by-laws of the organization.

Faculty Dean Anthony M. Iacopino thanked Dr. Peterson for his long and distinguished service. He also noted that a strong alumni association is essential as a sounding board for faculty initiatives and policies; supporting faculty goals; fundraising efforts; and celebrating achievements of the faculty and alumni members. •

comes the time We have to say ‘so long!’Dr. Peterson offers thanks to all in the Manitoba dental fraternity

The Manitoba Bisons Vanier Cup championship last fall was special for everyone at the University of Manitoba,

but perhaps none more so than Dr. Lawrence Stockton. The victory marked the Bisons’ first national football

championship since 1969, the same year that a younger Dr. Stockton patrolled the gridiron as the team’s starting tight-end. That year, the team ran the table, going 6-0 in the regular season before rolling through the playoffs, knocking off the heavily favoured McGill Redmen 24-15 in the final. Not bad for a guy in his rookie year.

“I had what I considered to be a great year,” he said.Dr. Stockton (seen here pointing to his team’s name plate

on the Cup) also commended coach Brian Dobie (left) and the team for “a culmination of a lot of hard work.” •

alumnus named american President Dr. Keith Morley becomes first Canadian to accept top AAPD post

Greetings to all! I would like to thank those who contributed to such a thoughtful and generous “going-away” present on Monday,

December 17. A golden watch with the university logo will

be a perfect reminder of all the stimulating and challenging hours spent at the faculty since I first entered the Hallowed Halls in 1960. Over the last 47-1/2 years, I truly have seen many changes.

I hate to confess that at our cottage, I do not wear a watch. The sun and a built-in biologic clock are all that were needed to tell time in that less stressful world. But rest assured, it will come in handy on the occasional foray into civilization.

It has been a pleasure to work with you all, be it in the teaching clinics and labs, at faculty retreats and committee meetings, or collaborating in research and other scholarly endeavors.

The products of all our combined efforts are the confident and competent students who graduate.

In the main, our dental and dental hygiene alumni are appreciative of our collective efforts.

As our faculty goes from a glorious past to a bright and hopeful future, I am content to fade away and watch from the sidelines. I promise to drop-in occasionally for a visit.

Here is to the next 50 years for the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Manitoba. •

Dr. Keith Morley, DMD (pictured right) was named the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s (AAPD) president, the first Canadian named to lead the organization. The appointment

was confirmed by the AAPD board during its annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas last May.

Dr. Morley was also the recipient of the Academy’s prestigious Merle C. Hunter Leadership Award in 1999.

Prior to entering private practice in Barrie, Ontario, Canada in 1984, Dr. Morley served with distinction in the Canadian Armed Forces Dental Services and was honorably discharged with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.

educators, editor stand downDrs. William Christie, Donald Davidson, Amazis Louka leave lasting legacies

Last December, the Faculty of Dentistry paid tribute to Drs. William H. Christie, Donald Davidson and Amazis Louka, each having announced their retirement from

active duty at the University of Manitoba. All three capable and talented practitioners

leave behind a lasting legacy of loyal and dedicated service to the students and the faculty that will last for many years to come.

Each of the good doctors will be missed by the many here who came to know and work with them in their areas of specialty over the years.

For many years, Dr. Christie served as head of the Division of Endodontology.

He is also well known for his involvement

as managing editor and the main driving force behind the Alumni-Faculty Bulletin for many years.

Dr. Davidson (pictured top, left with Dr. Igor Pesun at a December faculty event) and Dr. Louka (bottom right, with Dr. Colin Dawes) both served as associate professors in Restorative Dentistry and are well regarded by faculty, students and staff.

The Faculty of Dentistry and School of Dental Hygiene offers congratulations and thanks to all three of these talented and dedicated individuals, all of whom contributed significantly to the betterment of the educational experience at the University of Manitoba. •

With a little help from our friendsVolunteers, sponsors key to success for gala, Drive for Top Five

The foundation for the Nine Pillars of Innovation was poured February 1 at the Faculty of Dentistry’s gala anniversary celebration.

Thanks to the outstanding support of the volunteer committee and the generous contributions of our corporate partners, the Drive for Top Five is off to a roaring start.

The golden anniversary, and the year-long celebrations that will accompany it, have become one of the top priorities of new faculty Dean Dr. Anthony M. Iacopino.

When Dr. Iacopino arrived in the summer of 2007 he quickly set about putting plans in place to acknowledge the faculty’s 50th anniversary year.

The volunteer committee was struck in the fall of 2007 to orchestrate the effort.

Prominent members of the Manitoba dental and business community stepped forward, giving generously of their time, expertise and talent to work towards making the gala an outstanding lead-off event for the faculty’s anniversary year.

Guided by the new vision for

the faculty, the Drive for Top Five became the rallying cry. And, in less than six months, the gala celebration was a reality.

Sponsors lined up in support; each committed to support the faculty in saluting its past and to begin the challenge of building for the future. Practicing professionals in the dental community came out, voicing their good will and support.

Prominent members of the provincial business community, members of all major provincial political parties and high ranking

members of the university’s administration came to show their support.

Eminent members of the faculty alumni, including evening emcee Sam Borden and Les Allen (pictured, centre), also came in support.

“We achieved so much in so little time,” Dean Iacopino noted, “and credit for this must be given to those who came out to support us. Our committee did an incredible job and the support we received from the business community was absolutely fabulous.”

It was then that Dr. Regehr realized the impact of his actions. He instinctively showed bravery and risked his life to save others. His strength and ability, gained through training for marathons at home, allowed him to carry out this heroic rescue.

To the Class of 83, and others at the 2008 Tropical Series, he became known as Super Dave.

Note: A rip current or “rip tide is a strong surface flow of water returning seaward from near shore. Such currents can be extremely dangerous, dragging swimmers away from the beach and leading to death by drowning when they attempt to fight the current and become exhausted. Rip currents cause roughly 100 deaths annually in the US alone.

Births

Carter and Lauryn Pampolina Oriel were born January 1, 2008 at 11:14am. They weighed 2lbs 15 oz and 3lbs 1 oz respectively. Carter

and Lauryn were well taken care of at the Rockyview General Hospital until Feb. 15 when they were allowed to go home! Mom, Christine Pampolina,

(Class of 2000) is doing well, although sleep deprived, but grateful

that the babies are doing well.

Dr. F. James “Jim” Marshall died on January 24, 2008 with his close family nearby. He had been hospitalized since knee surgery in October 2007.

Fredrick James Marshall was born February 11, 1925 to Dr. Les and Bertha Marshall in Vancouver, BC. Brothers Bob and Don and sister Jane joined the family circle. Early years in Vancouver were shaped by that same family, hard work and the love of boating on the family yacht, the “Jaro”, which his father loved to navigate through the waters off Vancouver Island.

Jim served overseas during World War II, returning to follow his father’s profession by attending dental school in Oregon. It was there that he met Janet “Jan” Ormandy and they were married in 1948.

Upon graduation with a DMD degree in 1949, they returned to join the dental practice of Jim’s father in Vancouver, BC. Not satisfied with the challenges of general practice of Dentistry, Jim and Jan with four children and a dog packed up and moved to the USA to attend two years of graduate school at the University of Illinois, under Dr. Maury Massler. He completed a master’s degree in 1959 and joined the new dental faculty at the University of Manitoba in 1959.

Dr. Marshall began as an Associate Professor and taught Oral Histology and Endodontology. Dr. Marshall enjoyed the challenges of academic life and was able to relate to his students on a collegial level.

One of his favorite extracurricular activities was to attend the student hockey games. On occasion Jim was known to ‘stitch-up’ the facial lacerations of the players, which occurred all too frequently before the days of face helmets.

In 1965 the Marshall family transferred first to Pittsburgh, PA and later to Columbus, Ohio, where Jim was Professor and Head of Endodontology and supervised the

endo graduate program. After five years at Ohio State University, Dr. Marshall returned full circle and became Head of Endodontics, both undergraduate and graduate programs at Oregon Health Sciences University. Jim was able to relate to the many Canadian dentists seeking graduate school positions and had many of them pass through his program before returning to Canada to practice endodontics.

Dr. Marshall was honoured with many awards and distinctions over a long and successful teaching career. These included, to name a few; being a founding member in the Canadian Academy of Endodontics, an examiner on the American Board of Endodontics, an honorary Fellow in the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and the recipient of the prestigious I.B Bender Lifetime Educator Award from the American Association of Endodontists in 2003.

He retired in 1990 but continued part-time in the grad endo program, as Professor Emeritus at Oregon Health Sciences University.

The F. James Marshall Scholarship in Endodontology (Year 3) was established at the University of Manitoba in 2007.

He is survived by his daughters, Barbara (Arthur) and Nancy (Michael), sons Gordon (Karla) and Stephen (Connie), nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, his brothers Bob and Don; and the extended Marshall and Ferguson families.

His wife Jan in 2000, and his sister Jane predeceased him. Jim was a loving patriarch to his family, friends and colleagues around the world and he will be profoundly missed.

A celebration of Jim’s life was held on Saturday, February 23, 2008, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Southwest Portland. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for Adults and Children with Disabilities, an organization dear to Jim’s heart.
