Short term
Shortages at the labor market
A shortage of well-qualified personnel
forces companies to search for
alternative solutions for employment:
e.g. choosing locations with less
shortages, robotisation
C Complex EU labor market
Long term
Demographic developments
After 2020, the aging of the EU
population will become a major factor.
In 2040, the same amount of work has
to be done with 25% less employees
Expected labor shortages transport 2025
5 Impact on labor market

Impact on logistics labor
An Amazon order picker walks about
18 km per shift and picks an order every 33
seconds (112 picks/hour)
In combination with a robot, the order picker can
pick orders 2x as much (230 picks/hour)
The number of employees at Amazon has
grown in 2014-2017, even though the
number of robots has increased from 1,400
to 45,000 2014 2017

Calculation impacts robotics on labor in DC’s
© Buck Consultants International, 2017 26
The Netherlands and NR Westphalia:
⚫ About 3,000 warehouses larger than 10.000 m2
⚫ Robotics in 60% of warehouses until 2030: 10% front runners and 30%
laggards
⚫ Savings potential: between 40-90% for 4 types of warehouse
⚫ Numbers of job lost to robotics in the warehouse: about 70,000 jobs, or about
45-50 per warehouse in 2030
However:
⚫ Autonomous increase of distribution activities between now and 2030: at least
+2 million m2 of warehouses larger than 10,000 m2 build each year
⚫ Shortages on the logistics labor market will increase in the Netherlands and
NR Westphalia until 2030
Conclusion: It looks like the rise of robotics will overall not take logistics
jobs away, but be necessary to accommodate growth of the sector

Professional growth and developmentGoogle…
32
I use google …this one* seems to be closest to what I have experienced
“Professional growth is all about gaining new skills and experience […] Personal development fits alongside professional growth — so if you want to progress in your career, you’ll need to develop personally first. That’s the only way you’ll be able to handle your fears, take on more responsibility, and succeed with greater challenges […] When you expand your skills beyond your current role you’re preparing yourself for more and that makes you more valuable to employers.”

The importance of professional growth and developmentMotivation
33
▪ What is motivating human beings to go outside of their comfort zone, take on new challenges and have a career / move up the (social) ladder?
Money
Social benefit, welfare of others
Social status, respect, power
Because it’s fun… ?
The importance of professional growth and developmentMy lessons learned, why I did what I am still doing…
34
▪ Be passionate
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. Confucius
▪ Be authentic
You can only go so far pretending to be someone you are not. Stay true to yourself and develop your own style
▪ Be flexible
Throughout my career, mobility has been an important factor:
• Consultant travelling to Almelo, Leuven, Milaan, Tel Aviv and Grand Rapids Michigan USA
• Vestas travelling to Hamburg, Vienna, Boekarest, Aruba, Curacao
• ABB Rotterdam, Phoenix USA, Florence, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Helsinki, Zurich
• Nordex Hamburg, Pamplona, Paris, Chicago
• Meyer Burger Thun CH, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur / Penang, South Korea
Conclusion
35
You could probably find as many dissertations on the subject of personal growth and professional development as there are people. But you need to figure out your own motivation why you want to grow and develop and what you want to achieve
My ‘career’ happened because I am not afraid of taking on new challenges as well as being flexible in terms of balancing private life and work life. Yet I did not actively pursue a career like a professional sportsman / -woman and make sacrifices upfront
Above all, I love what I am doing. Passion is the energy -source to make things happen and be able to endure the sometimes challenging situations
