AlumniBeat:What isyourcurrentroleatFocusPartnersLLPand what do youdo in this capacity?Whydid you chooseSingapore to anchoryourfirm?Howhasyourtime abroadaffectedyourperspectivesonbusiness?

Jean‐Philippe Odunlami: I set up FocusPartnersin2006inmysecondyearoftheHBSMBAprogram.Iwasnaturallydrawnto Asia because being from Europe, havingspent nearlyadecadein theU.S.,and with family roots in West Africa, IthoughtAsiawasreallythemissingpieceinmymentalworldmap. Singaporeseemedlikeagreatplatformbecause it is business‐friendly andconnected toallofAsia, notjustChinaorIndia. Business‐wise, my goal was tofigureouthow tousemyglobal background to fillbusinessgaps all over the world, starting with Asia. The bulk ofactivities at Focus Partners, is taking companies from low‐growthcountriesanddevelopingthemingrowingmarketsinAsia. I also spend some time advising the Singaporegovernment on policies and incentives to encourage morelocalcompaniestogrowandinternationalize. The important takeaway for me from the internationalexperienceis thatdifferent modelsworkin different places.Business and career opportunities don’t look the sameeverywhere. International business is a great way to learnnewthingsandadapttodifferentmindsets.AB:YouwereabletonotonlyattendSVMPbutalsoHBSforyour graduate studies. How different were the twoexperiences, ifatall?

JPO: I think most people who have been through bothprogramsagreethat SVMP isreallyawindowinto theMBAprogram.Yougetmanyofthesamebenefits:thenetworking, theprofessors, theclassroomdiscussions and thebranding.Ifyou’renotatoneofthetoptierundergraduateuniversities,SVMPshowsyouthatyoureallyhaveashotatattendingHBSat somepoint.Once Ihad the chance to experience SVMP,and see how supportive the system was, from staff toprofessors, I knew that getting an MBA there could be awonderfulexperience…andimportantly, possible.AB:What advicecanyou sharewithalumniwhowould liketofollowasimilarpathasyours?

First,Ithinkeach individual hastounderstand andchart hisor her ownpath, step‐by‐step. You have todeterminewhyyoudowhat youdo. Insteadofseeingthings likeSVMPortheMBAprogramasanendgoal, it isbetter toviewthemas

toolstoachieveyouroverallobjectives.Iknew Ienjoyed business, had a pretty good head forfinance, andan internationalbackground, sothekeywasto figureouthowtomakeallthepiecesfit together intoacoherent lifeplan. Once Ihada sketch of that plan, theMBAprogram was awaytogainthetoolsto refine itand implementit. However, if you don’t do that self‐analysis, even if you get into theprogram, you might getlost because there is tremendous pressure tofollow the herd. TheMBAprogram at HBS isaonce‐in‐a‐lifetime opportunity, so the keyis notto miss that bigpicture and not be sidetracked

onceyouactuallygetthere.Onewaytodothat istoensureyou are connecting with your roots, whether it’s youruniversity, yourhomeorevenyourpreviouscareer.NowthatyouhavebenefitedfromSVMP,HBS,andyearsofwork experience, what are some of the most importantthings youhavelearned about yourself, andwhat areyourdreamsforthefuture?

JPO:Themost important thingI’ve learned isthat it’soktochart your ownpath. And it’simportant to put thepriorityon doings things that are enjoyable, instead of beatingyourself intoaparticularmoldofsuccess.I thinkformanyofus, wetendtofollowthe“goalposts”,likeSVMP, Fortune500companies,MBAprograms,etc.Wewantto“checkthebox”.But it’s fine to move outside of that at some point. Butimportantly, if the MBA is not in the cards for you, it’sperfectlyfine.Ithinkthere’satremendousamountofenergyand creativitythat islost whenwefeel that wehave todowhatseemssuccessfultoothers.Intermsofdreamsfor thefuture, myaspirationsarefairlysimple.I’d liketocontinuedoingexactlywhat I’mdoingnow, andbecomeevenbetteratit.Atsomepoint,Iwant tobeina position where Ican also show others how to do it, andsharemypassionfor global business. Of course,Iwelcomefinancialsuccess, aslongasI canstillbeagoodpersonintheprocess.

SUMMER2010

AlumniBeat:What isyourcurrentroleat IBMandwhatdoyoudointhiscapacity? In my current role at IBM, I lead marketing and businessdevelopment for cloud computing. There is a lot of buzzaround cloud computing in the marketplace andwe knowthat itcansignificantlyreduce ITcostsandcomplexity. Partof themission of our group is to help deliver thatmessageand the capabilities therein through and with our robustportfolioofbusinesspartners.

AB:What do you rememberasthehighlightsofSVMP?DT: First, the opportunity tointeract with peers from somany different walks of life and therelationshipsthatwerefosteredduringthattime.Secondly, the unique access to suchrenowned faculty and thegenuineinterestshown on all occasions. This wasparticularly encouraging, especially giventheschedulethat most endured.“Time” isalwaysbeingpositionedassuchavaluableassetandtogiveitwillinglyspeaksvolumesofone’scharacter.AB: How have you applied the valuablelessons from your SVMP experience intoyourprofessionalandpersonallife?DT:SVMP reinforced two verysimpleyet important lessonsthat I continuetodrawupontoday. Theyaretodreambig, but execute bigger and workhard, but work smart. In myopinion, dreamingbigislessaboutthepotofgoldattheendof the rainbow and more about maximizing the uniqueexperiences along the way. Every big dream can besystemically broken down into small, incremental butimportant achievements that shape and mold you for thenext step. It’s probablyfair to say that everyone has beenencouraged to work hard and work smart but very fewpeople are able to put it to practice when it’s needed themost.AB:Whatadvicecanyousharewithalumniwhowouldliketofollowasimilarpathasyours?DT: From a professional standpoint, I would suggest tocontinuouslyunderstand notonlyone'sroleandhow it fits

into the larger scope of an organization, but how theorganization fits in the world economy. At my company, Ihavebeenabletowitnessandparticipateinperhapsoneofthe most phenomenal shifts in the industry, certainly theeconomyand itssubsequent impacton theworld. Stayingcurrent and understanding the major trends in business, even ifatahighlevel, canhelpyoumaintainyourcredibilityand ensure you are aligned with initiatives that make animpact. Overall Iwould sayto knowyour definition of success.

There are several books, politicalleaders and business giants whowilltrytodefinethisforyoubutitis critical to develop thisdefinition for yourself and worktoward it with unmatched

passion. The ability to impress others hasalways been an attractive lure. Master theability to constantly astonish yourself andotherswillnotice.AB: Now that you have benefited fromSVMP, graduate school and years of workexperience, what are some of the mostimportant things you have learned aboutyourself, andwhat areyourdreams forthefuture?DT: A lot of what I’ve shared is certainly areflectionofallthethingsthat I havelearned

butIwillexpandupontwoitemsinparticularastheyrelatedirectlytome. Oneis how Iallotmytime.I’velearnedthat it isveryimportanttomaketimeforthosethatyoucareaboutthemostand todo the thingsthat you carethemost about. As much as we try to quantify time andplacetangiblevalues toit, thetruevalueand impact in thelongrunisimmeasurable. I’ve also learned how important it is to listen andappreciatethatyoucanlearnsomethingfromeveryone.Myexperienceshave taught methat it is important to listen tounderstand, rather than listening to respond. Peopledon’trealize how often they can cheat themselves out ofextraordinary learning opportunities by failing to listen toandhumblyacknowledgeresourcesthatseeminsignificant.
