Inside this issue:
By the Grace and Glory of God, the Alumni Association of
Lincoln University is alive, the AALU is growing, the
AALU is well, and the AALU is STRONG! We are the old-
est association of alumni in existence at a Historically
Black College & University dating back to 1872! That
these are challenging and perilous times for HBCU are in
general and no less threatening for Lincoln University,
goes without saying here. Nonetheless, the leadership of
the AALU has taken on the task of engaging our diverse
and talent laden alumni base and is making positive
strides daily. Our faith has brought us here and we in this association are determined to
bring to bear the full force of our will, talent and determination to see that our alma ma-
ter survives and thrives for generations to come.
Our new administration took office in July and our initiatives and programs have taken
off at a frenetic and progressive pace with the support and efforts of many. We hit the
ground running with a 100 Day Program focusing on infrastructure, branding, organiza-
tional development and membership systems and we are well ahead of schedule. The
end of July found us on hand at the outstanding 2nd Annual Incoming Freshmen and
Parents Outing in suburban Maryland sponsored by the DC Metro and Baltimore Metro

Chapters. We immediately set about living up to campaign promises to update, reorganize and institute new systems to
better serve our members and grow the organization. A new logo, website and interim Executive Secretary herald a fresh
and invigorating outlook to the future that despite the doom and gloom musings of a few will propel our alumni and uni-
versity into a new period of achievement and renown.
Led by our Trustees and Council leaders in August, the AALU answered President Jennings plea for emergency dona-
tions to the university scholarship fund to make up for the change and shortfall in funding to Lincoln students as a result
of the changes by the U.S. Department of Education to the Parent Plus Loan program. We donated $10,000 to the univer-
sity from the funds generated by the past dues of AALU members. Four deserving students will now be enabled to con-
tinue their education at our alma mater. Trustees Sharman Lawrence-Wilson MHS ’98 and John Johnston ’89 as-
sisted Carol Black ‘67 Kenneth Poole ‘73, Darrell Braxton ’92 and yours truly to induct a new class of freshmen into
the Lincoln Family at the Freshmen Induction Ceremony.
Early September found much of our leadership at
Cheney University rooting for our beloved Lincoln
Lions football team in a triumph over our arch rivals.
The following weekend many in our leadership turned
out in support of the university at the Lions Awards
and our Council in the following days overwhelmingly
voted in favor of supporting the Lincoln University
Heritage Initiative’s (LUHI) mission to work towards
the preservation of Lincoln University’s historic build-
ings.
Now that the school year is back in session we’ve be-
gan programs to support students in career prepara-
tion and co-sponsored with the Office of Career Ser-
vices a recent trip to Pittsburgh where 6 of Lincoln’s
top students were interviewed for internships and
jobs by top recruiters at the University of Pittsburgh
Medical Center’s (UPMC) boardroom on the 58th floor
of the U.S. Steel building in downtown Pittsburgh.
We were informed that this exalted employer of over 60,000 had never hosted any university and rolled out the red car-
pet in that particular manner. Much gratitude and thanks go out to Career Services Director Ralph Simpson and his
visionary leader Dr. F. Carl Walton, Vice President of Student Affairs.
When we met with President Robert Jennings in late August, he offered to return our tradition of class reunions to
May during Graduation Week as long as the AALU on behalf of all alumni agreed to raise $1,000,000 for Lincoln. I be-
lieve we can reach that goal, and will put that matter in front of the AALU Council and our members at our meeting in
October during Homecoming. Dr. Jennings also offered to set aside the Historic Bond House for the AALU to use with the
stipulation that we muster the wherewithal to renovate that property and bring it up to code for usage and occupancy.
Vice President Kenneth Poole ‘73, Central Director and Chester County President Carol Black ‘67, Historian Jami
Craig ’77 and I met Office of Alumni Relations Director Rita Dibble and Vice-President of Institutional Advancement
Cheryl Thomas at the Bond House recently, early on a crisp Saturday morning for a walk-through. While the structure
has not been in use for some time, we found it to be in the kind of shape and condition that we might get it up to speed
for the use of the AALU and yet to be determined avails within the next year!

I have made it a priority to incorporate leadership development as a core value and practice in our association. Part and
parcel to a sound and thriving organization is to fill all positions as outlined in our governing documents with able bodied
and positive thinking alumni volunteers who are committed to our mission and love Dear Lincoln. In that regard I am
fully vested with the mindset that our strength and vitality lies in functioning local chapters where the alumni of Lincoln
University live and can carry out our mission through fellowship, recruitment of talented students and raising money
and encouraging alumni giving and support for our alma mater. I recently attended the Baltimore Metro Chapter meet-
ing and am humbled by the devotion and leadership there under Miriam Stokes ‘91, Dot Smallwood ‘78 and Trustee
John Johnston ’89 as they continue to grow a strong group while carrying on what will become a tradition as they will
produce the 2nd Annual Thurgood Marshall Scholarship & Awards Gala on November 2. VP Kenneth Poole ‘73, Interim
Executive Director Shelah Harper ‘76, Treasurer Darrell Braxton ’92 and I also attended the fiscal year’s first chap-
ter meeting of the Philadelphia chapter recently. Over 40 alumni were on hand there as Robin Torrence ‘89, Charlotte
Wroten ’84 and Trustee Vernon Davis ’86 ran a well-organized and spirited meeting. Of special note was the atten-
dance there of the newly installed and youngest ever Chair of Lincoln University’s Board of Trustees, Kimberly Lloyd
‘94. Chairwoman Lloyd was duly recognized and celebrated with a cake and delivered special remarks.
We now have chartered and recognized chapters in Atlanta, Greater Carolinas (Charlotte), North Carolina Triangle/
Triad, Richmond, Washington, D.C. Metropolitan, Baltimore Metropolitan, Ches-
ter County, PA, Philadelphia and Central New Jersey. Greater New York and
The Graduate School Chapter will be recognized and brought into the fold shortly.
Organizational plans and chapter development is currently taking place in Dela-
ware, Florida, Pittsburgh, Chicago and the Greater Mid-West. I will endeavor to
attend as many meetings as possible to support the efforts of our devoted and
hard -working volunteer alumni on a chapter and regional level. They are our
life’s blood and we aim to demonstrate that with our focus and attention. Our
alumni everywhere can now take heart with the fact that we care and are poised
to be in touch with them and service their needs and engagement as we have ap-
pointed four regional directors whose responsibility it is to contact and be in touch
with alumni throughout this great nation and ultimately the globe.
We have also reached out and engaged young alumni up to 15 years after gradua-
tion to develop special programs of outreach and interaction which we are positive will lead to having younger alumni to
join and be fully active members of this organization. They will keep us on point and balanced in terms of the trends as
well as to better connect with and be of service to our students and parents who often need direct access to the resources
that the alumni can willingly and responsibly bring to the table on their behalf. Christine Holt ’11 and Courtney
Tipper ‘11 are spearheading the Young Alumni effort for the AALU. A website was recently launched,
http://luyac.weebly.com/, and we are expecting great things from our young leaders. Please support them!
Homecoming and class reunions are coming shortly and we expect to have a large presence on campus. Our meeting will
take place on Saturday, October 26 at 8 am. The theme is; “Come Back to Lincoln, Come Back to the AALU!” All pre-
sent and past alumni leaders will be singled-out, asked to be in a processional and honored in a special Alumni Unifica-
tion Convocation in the Chapel. We will go over key initiatives and news at our meeting and we will also have the slate
of nominees for the Alumni Trustee position that will be up for election in May 2014. Please come dressed in dark busi-
ness or business casual attire for the meeting as we will take a historic picture at the Alumni Arch to include all mem-
bers of the association on hand. Finally, have you paid your national dues yet? Remember, the operations, solvency and
sheer vitality of the AALU is dependent upon your dues. If you have not done so, please take the time now and go to our
website, www.aalupa.org, and take advantage of the convenience we have extended to you and pay your national dues
now. Lifetime members pay $500, sustaining lifetime members $100 (5 successive payments) and general members pay
$35. I encourage all to contact me with any questions or suggestions as it relates to alumni and Lincoln University. No
issue is too big or too small. In the meantime thank you for your continuing support and I look forward to seeing or at
least speaking with you soon. - - Sincerely, Robert Ingram, ‘76, President
