Lakers beat Heat, take3-1 lead in NBA Finals

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — LeBron James woke up from his gameday nap Tuesday and decided it was time to send his Los Angeles Lakers teammates a mes-sage.

He grabbed his phone and told the Lakers they were facing a must-win game.

“I felt that vibe. I felt that pressure,” James said. “I felt like, for me personally, this was one of the biggest games of my career.”

Message delivered.James and the Lakers

are back in control of these NBA Finals, one win away from the fran-chise’s 17th champion-

ship. James finished with 28 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, Antho-ny Davis’ 3-pointer with 39.5 seconds left finally settled matters and the Lakers beat the Miami Heat 102-96 in Game 4.

The Lakers lead 3-1 and can win the title when the series resumes Friday.

“Big-time play. Big-time moment,” James said of Davis’ 3-pointer. “Not only for A.D., but for our ballclub and for our fran-chise.”

Davis finished with 22 points, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 15 and Danny Green added 10 for the Lakers, who didn’t trail at any point in the final 20-plus minutes.

The Lakers are now 56-0 this season when lead-ing going into the fourth quarter.

Jimmy Butler scored 22 points for Miami, which got 21 from Tyler Herro, 17 from Duncan Robin-son and 15 from Bam Adebayo — who returned after missing two games with a neck injury.

“I just loved seeing our guys compete. I love how they respond in between those four lines,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “This was a throwback game and there were some moments of truth there at the end, and probably the bottom line is they won those moments of truth.”

He’s right. Whenever Miami had something going, the Lakers snuffed it out.

James’ 3-pointer with 8:18 left in the third put the Lakers up 55-54 and set the tone for the way the rest of the night was going to go; L.A. leading, Miami chasing.

“Like I always say, they’re a really, really, really good team and we’ve got to play damn near perfect to beat them,” Butler said. “We didn’t do that tonight. … We’ll watch this, learn from it, but we can’t lose another one.”

The Lakers were up by

seven with 2:27 left in the third after a 3-pointer by Davis; Miami scored the next six to get within one. Herro made a 3 early in the fourth to get Miami within one again; the Heat promptly fouled Markieff Morris on a 3-point try, and he made all three shots.

Three rookies thrown into fire of MLB playoffsBy Noah TristerAP Baseball Writer

It’s normal for a base-ball player to dream of making his big league debut or pitching in the postseason.

Doing both at the same time? That’s a lot to digest — but Ryan Weathers handled it OK.

“We felt confident we were going to use him tonight, and how he per-formed was everything we could have asked

for,” San Diego manager Jayce Tingler said. “He was confident, he was throwing strikes, he was pounding the zone, he was using all his pitches. It was very impressive.”

Weathers pitched for the first time in a major league game Tuesday night when he appeared in relief for the Padres in Game 1 of their NL Divi-sion Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He became the fifth player in the modern era to make

his big league debut in a postseason game — and three of those newcom-ers did it this year. Min-nesota outfielder Alex Kirilloff and Tampa Bay left-hander Shane McCla-nahan were the others.

Maybe nothing should seem surprising in this unusual season, but con-sidering the lack of minor league games in 2020, it’s pretty remarkable that teams feel comfortable inserting players into the postseason with no recent

game experience.“Those guys have been

competing, they’ve been practicing, they’ve been working out. Ultimately we made our decision,” Tingler said before Tues-day’s game. “I think guys improved throughout the year over at the alterna-tive sites, just as they would if they were in Double-A or Triple-A and continued to log innings, log at-bats.”

It’s not unheard of for a player to shine in the

postseason with almost no major league experi-ence. During their 2002 championship run, the Anaheim Angels leaned heavily on reliever Fran-cisco Rodriguez, a rookie who had pitched just 5 2/3 innings in that regu-lar season. The lack of familiarity for hitters may have worked in his favor, in addition to his obvious talent.

Weathers had even less experience. The 20-year-old left-hander hadn’t

pitched above Class A when he was summoned from the bullpen in the third inning Tuesday to face Corey Seager. Weath-ers ended up pitching 1 1/3 hitless innings, although he did issue a couple of walks.

The Padres lost 5-1, but it was scoreless when Weathers came in — a reasonably high-pressure situation, compared to other players who made their debuts in the post-season.
