IntroductionMany people are now turning to alternative medicine or natural therapy in an attempt to heal their heartburn more naturally and holistically. Do not mistake them for ‘quack’ medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine has been around since 5000 years ago, and was used by the Chinese to heal the body as a whole, and not just tackling the surface symptoms. Many of the treatments are natural and uses herbs or massages, so they are safe and non-invasive.

The recent popularity in TCM causes many TCM clinics to bloom around the country, and there are certified courses or degrees accredited by Chinese universities and approved health boards, so you can assured that it is definitely safe if you follow the instructions of a certified TCM physician. However, these sessions may be costly and you may want to perform some meridian massages at home to relieve yourself of heartburn discomfort. This manual teaches you exactly how to do that.

Essential Oils

Aromatherapy involves the use or essential oils which are aromatic extracts obtained from herbs, flowers, plants, and woods for medicinal purposes.

For a long time, essential oils have been used to harmonize the body's systems and to motivate as well as fortify respective organs to make them function better. Also, essential oils aid the body in healing itself more successfully by tapping on the wonderful scents of nature to heal your body.

Having complex molecular structures, essential oils are natural and not harmful to use. They also have antiseptic effects. They can give significant positive effects on both the mind and body.

Essential oils are available in several formulations, and some of them are made specifically to treat and improve heartburn. They are easy to find and are usually available in health shops as well as online stores.

Carrier Oils

Do not be confused by carrier oils. First of all, they are definitely not essential oils, but it is a base oil that derives its source from the nuts, seeds, or kernels of a plant. Different carrier oils have their own therapeutic properties, from overcoming anxiety to easing depression.

Take note that although carrier oils are natural, they still have a limited shelf life, so be alert and look out for oils that have turned rancid. To spot this, ensure that the oils are not dark and does not have a bitter or strong aroma.

To achieve the perfect blend of essential oil in carrier oil, drop a few drops of essential oils in your choice of carrier oil. Remember to never use the essential oil when it is concentrated.

Peppermint

Most of us eat peppermint sweets to get a fresh breath but never really thought of it for aromatherapy purposes. Peppermint is soothing for your digestive tissues, and you can dilute a few drops of peppermint essential oil into a carrier oil and rub in on your abdomen.

Chamomile

Chamomile has been used to alleviate heartburn and indigestion. You can drop a few drops of chamomile on a warm steaming towel and place it on your abdomen to ease indigestion. Another great benefit of chamomile is the ability to promote calmness and reduce stress. If you find German chamomile oil too expensive, you can replace it with chamomile tea.

Anise

Star anise has similar properties as ginger. Before applying star anise, perform an allergy patch test to check if your skin is allergic to star anise.

Others

Orange oil,, Litsea cubeba and marjoram oil are some essential oils that can be utilized in treating heartburn. By massaging the above essential oils in your abdomen two times a day, you will feel positive changes on your heartburn condition.

Other Uses of Essential Oil

Bath

Add some drops of essential oil to lukewarm water that will be used for bathing. Soak for ten minutes.

Inhalation

Combine a few drops of essential oil to hot water in a bowl and inhale the vapors. Another way to prevent the full blast of the hot vapor is to place a clean towel over the bowl. Gently lift the towel to allow controlled amount of vapor to escape. Start by inhaling slowly.

Massage

Administer several drops of essential oil with carrier oil like almond, apricot kernel, evening primrose, olive, peanut, pecan, sesame or walnut. Then, massage your temple, feet and also joints.

For your carrier oil, never use mineral oil. Do not massage essential oil directly onto your skin as it is very concentrated, Always dilute a few drops of essential oil in a carrier oil.

Vaporization

Combine a few drops of essential oil formula to a little container with water.

Recipes

Here’s a simple recipe to alleviate your heartburn. For pregnant mothers, you can check with your physicians to take the tea version as the essential oil may be too strong.

Using a combination of peppermint, ginger, grapefruit, anise and chamomile essential oil, place them in a aromatherapy diffuser.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient practice that is used for medical purposes. Its goal is to regulate pain and fight different illness symptoms by way of inserting needles through specific areas in the skin which are known as energy junctions.

This practice focuses on the perception of an energy force inside the body. This force interconnects different bodily functions and a lot of energy points that are present all over the body.

Meridians

Another name for meridians is acupressure vessels. Imagine a train network of a particular country. There will be many different networks, denoted by different names and colors, running through the country. At some junctions there need to be an interchange stop where there are stopovers for people to cross over to the other side of the country. If there is a breakdown in one of the stations, the entire transport system will crumble.

This is similar to the meridian channels in our body. Each of the meridian channel is linked to a specific organ. And tagged on each meridian channel are specific acupressure points.

With this, the ill organ is able to defend itself more efficiently against the disorder. This will also help the organ to be in harmony with itself and function optimally.

Meridian Massage for Heartburn

When someone is sick, the flow of energy is interrupted in the organ or organs around the specific median. Acupuncture will help move the energy to the area where the energy is poor.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

A certified acupuncturist may run different tests in the tongue, eyes, mouth, and pulse in order to get an initial idea about the flow of your energy and state of health. These are not done via acupuncture but by the four diagnostic methods used in Traditional Chinese Medicine -

observing your energy level, tongue coating, your various organs (nose, eyes, ears and tongue) and your state of health; hearing the tone and energy level of your voice and looking out for bad breathasking in detail about your symptoms and health conditions; taking your pulse. Different types of pulse, like slippery, strong, gentle and smooth, all reveal different situations about your health condition.

After the initial diagnosis the physician will then make notes and explain the presence of yang or yin deficiency in the body.

Observing the Tongue

By observing the tongue, we can detect whether there is any imbalances in the body. You can look into the mirror and observe the color and tongue coating. Tongue coating refers to the layer of deposits on your tongue. The table below gives a general diagnosis based on the observations made when looking at the tongue.

Color of Tongue

Tongue Coating Diagnosis

Pinkish and moist

Very thin and white color coating Healthy

Dark, bright red

Without coating, or with little coating or a bright coat

Deficient heat, Prolonged illness of deficiency in yin and excess in ‘fire’ Dark, bright

redWith coating - thick yellow coat or

swollen budsExcess heat, and excess ‘yang fire’ in

the organs

Reddish Purple

Light purple, bluish or greenish purple - Cold and Blood stagnation, weak ‘yang’ energyReddish

Purple Reddish/ Dark reddish purple - heat and blood stagnation, excess ‘heat’ in the body

General thick , white or furry coating

On the surface, the exterior of the body has caught a cold, but before it enters the body it is already an external pathogenic heat. It also indicates damp-coldness in the body. A thick coating may mean loss of appetite and retention of food in the body, leading to indigestion.

After these tests, a series of treatments will be given, and they are targeted to improve your condition and symptoms.

But some of us are apprehensive of the acupuncture needles and may not have the time, or even access to certified acupuncturists? How can you achieve similar results on your own?

Meridian Massage

Meridian Massage is evolved from acupuncture, which is a simple massage that you can perform yourself at the comfort of your own home. You can even do this when you are resting or watching your favorite TV program. Also know as Shiatsu in Japan, Meridian Massage is commonly practiced by the Chinese in Taiwan, Singapore and China, and also by the Japanese.

12 Standard Meridians

There are 20 different meridian channels and more than 600 acupuncture points that are connected to the meridians. You have to familiarize yourself with the meridians, especially the shorthand, in order to locate the points accurately.

Yang Meridians of the Arm Large Intestine (LI)Small Intestine (SI)Triple (San Jiao) Warmer (TW, TB, SJ)

TCM believes that when there is internal disharmony in the spleen and intestine, heartburn and discomfort in the tummy will occur.

Bloatedness and Stress-Induced Reflux

If you find that you have eaten food that is difficult to digest, overeat, and encounter gastric pain the following day. you should massage this acupressure point known as the Nei Guan Xue, Inner Pass, or PC 6. This acupuncture point also help to move qi stagnation, and is to relieve motion sickness and chest tightness.

Place your index finger and middle finger side by side in a parallel position and place it just below the wrist cease (below the palm) of the other hand. The middle point along the circumference is PC 6. This acupressure point is especially useful if you feel excess air in your stomach, or if the acid reflux and stomach pain is due to stress.

While pressing on this acupressure point, exhale slowly and you will feel better. Do this for 6 minutes and PC 6 can be found on both the left and right hands.

Indigestion, Bloating and Gastric Pain

This acupressure point, also called Zhong Wan (CV 12), is good if you experience indigestion, gastric pain, fatigue, metallic or acidic taste in your mouth, or insomnia.

Do not massage this acupressure point if you are pregnant. Do not exert too much strength as it will hurt the organs underneath the acupressure point.

Lying in a flat position, locate this acupressure 4 inches directly above your belly button. It is at your upper abdomen, on the anterior middle. Alternatively, locate the lowest rib and trace it all the way to the top. CV 12 is at the middle between the belly button and that point.

Massage this point using your finger or thumb for 6minutes. Alternatively, you can use your palm and massage for 5 to 10 minutes in a circular motion.

Massage to Drain Your Lymph

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Also known as the Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), this massage is also part of a lymphedema treatment to relieve tightness or simply to de-stress. How does MLD work? One of the many functions of the lymph system is to expel waste and toxins and drain fluid. With acid reflux that happens as a consequence of Candida overgrowth, toxins are deposited. This blocks the flow of lymph.

During the process of massage, the light pressure exerted stimulate the lymph vessels that are located just below the skin. The masseur should not exert a lot of strength as it will harm the vessels. This technique helps to congested fluid to move along and circulate back into the body. With the help of this massage, the lymph will be given the chance to flow freely and blockages will be removed. This will give way to beneficial effects that can help counter bacterial and yeast harmony in your body.

Pick a qualified masseur or masseuse who has experience in performing a lymph massage. Ask for a massage that is

especially for GERD, Candida, and problems in digestion.

Preparing for the Massage

Before going for the massage, do not apply any moisturizer, skin lotions or lubricants as friction is

essential to stimulate the lymph flow. You should also refrain from wearing tight clothes. During the massage, it is common for the therapist to

ask you to undress till waist and you may be handed a robe or a sheet to cover your bod. If you are uncomfortable, do not hesitate to tell your therapist.

In the massage room, the lights are dimmed to create a relaxing environment. Some even add candles to cultivate a feel-good mood. If you are allergic to the aroma oils from the candles or is uncomfortable with such an arrangement, communicate this to your therapist beforehand.

During the massage, relax and breathe deeply. If you have some areas of fibrosis that is blocking the lymph from flowing, the therapist may exert more strength to break up the blockage at the start. Just remember to listen out for instructions on abdominal breathing, and relax!

Areas to Massage

The therapist will concentrate on massaging the area where the lymph nodes are most concentrated - the neck, axilla (under the armpits) and the groin area. The therapist will start with moving fluids towards the nodes using slow strokes and then continue with the hands going further from these nodes, but this time round, he or she will direct the fluids back to these nodes.

After the Massage

After all the blockages are cleared, some of the stagnant lymph fluid will be ‘cleansed’ by the kidney,so you may feel an urge to pee after the massage. On some occasions you may also experience aching. If it doesn’t pass, do consult your therapist.

Massaging Your Bones and Joints

Look for a registered chiropractor or osteopath who is well-known. Then, have a bone and joint massage and use the following: cocoa butter, castor oil, olive oil, and peanut oil.

This kind of massage can stimulate the organs and glands that are responsible for fungal conditions that worsen heartburn. Perform an allergy patch test beforehand to ensure that you are not allergic to the ingredients used.

Massage on Digestive System

A slow digestive system can cause a variety of illnesses. Two of which are acid reflux as well as Candida overgrowth.

With the use of digestive massage where ayurvedic oils and lotions are used, the digestive system is stimulated and effective peristaltic movement (involuntary muscle movements that is required in moving food through the digestive tract) is promoted.

Opt for a practitioner who is qualified and trained well. You masseur or masseuse will concentrate on your nose, chin, neck, shoulders, waist, wrists, and ankles in order to promote better bowel movements.
