Genre Overviewfrom my textual analysis’

This is a general overview I have gained of the conventions of Alternative Rock genre videos through my textual analysis’.

MISE EN SCENELOCATION

The locations in these videos are always an industrial or warehouse type area.

LIGHTING

The lighting is very low throughout the videos meaning that the performer is mostly hidden throughout.

MISE EN SCENECOLOUR

PERFORMER

The videos all seem to have a brown/yellow tint to them, giving them a dull and urban look.

The video is mainly performance shots meaning that the singer is the main focus of the video. They are all well known Alternative Rock artists.

MISE EN SCENECOSTUME

All the performers wear the same style of smart/casual clothing, however Biffy Clyro wears clothing which is more smart. They all wear jeans which means they are probably aiming for the same audience of eighteen-thirty year olds.

CAMERA WORKSHOTS

The extreme long shot of the band at the beginning and end are repeated in both KT Tunstall’s and The Arctic Monkey’s videos.

The front on close ups of the performer as they sing are repeated throughout the videos of KT Tunstall and Biffy Clyro, portraying them as the main performer despite both having a band,

The cuts to close ups of the band members and equipment are repeated continuously during instrumental parts of the song in KT Tunstall’s, The Arctic Monkey’s and Biffy Clyro’s video.
