To every corner of the world: When I was working in Norway I flew frequently between Stavanger and Bergen, and occasionally to other destinations. Not great for the environment, but given the geography of the country it was often the only practical way to travel. For many Norwegians flying is just as routine as catching a bus or a train. On one flight I found myself sitting next to a young man who was wearing a Liverpool football shirt. Having been born in Liverpool myself I started a conversation. Very quickly the man was telling me how much he despised Everton. He had nothing but contempt for Arsenal and Chelsea. “But then there is Manchester United” he said. At this point he lowered his voice into a strange whisper and his eyes seemed to glaze over, rather like a veteran soldier lost in his memories of a distant battlefield. “Manchester United – that is the greatest hatred” he hissed. After a moment the Norwegian’s eyes returned to focus, and the conversation continued. He told me that, being from Liverpool, I would naturally hate Manchester, and indeed that I had a sort of tribal duty to do so. He seemed quite disconcerted when I said that I had nothing against Mancunians. Indeed he seemed shocked by the fact that one of my sisters-in-law came from Manchester. Soon after this the plane landed: mercifully it was a short flight. Afterwards I reflected on the absurdity of being lectured by a Norwegian on how I had a duty to hate people from another part of my home country. It reminds me of a story about an African head of state who was asked how his country managed to maintain good relations with both Israel and the Arab nations. With wisdom he replied that “we choose our friends. But we do not encourage our friends to choose our enemies for us.” There is no shortage of tension and violence in this world, with people at each others’ throats for any number of reasons. When you look at the state of the world it can be difficult to see any hope for a better future. Difficult even to know how to pray for the place, beyond asking God to have mercy. In Jerusalem during Holy Week, two thousand years ago, Jesus of Nazareth became the focal point of intense hostility. He took all the world’s hatred on himself, and it ended with him being led to the cross on Good Friday. He had lived the perfect human life, so the world decided to execute him. This Easter let us pray that mercy, grace, compassion and love will extend from the cross to every corner of the world. And also that hatred will be replaced by joy – the joy of Easter spreading outwards from the empty tomb. David Lewis

New Advertisement Pages This month sees the start of the new advertisement pages for April 2019 until March 2020. Do take a few minutes to look at them - maybe you can support a local business.

Monday, 15th April - will see a reflective service take place at St. Barbara’s Church, Ashton-under-Hill, commencing at 7.00 p.m.

During the service, words spoken by Jesus from the Cross will prompt the congregation’s prayers. The congregation will be invited to picture itself in a deserted Upper Room in Jerusalem where Jesus and his disciples had shared their last supper together. The time - the eve of the Sabbath…………… just before the Passover Festival.

Reflections will be offered by a number of characters who have been directly involved with the events of the days leading to the crucifixion.

Chapelries Annual Meeting At the Chapelries Annual Meeting, held in Teddington Village Hall on 7th March, we gave a big thank you to all those who have helped to run our two churches of St Margaret and St Nicholas during the last year. We would like you to know that your help is greatly appreciated whether you take or run the services, give to the churches, help with and deliver the magazines, arrange the flowers, do the cleaning, lock the churches, tidy the churchyards, or help on other occasions. Some of us older helpers are now no longer able to do as much as we have been – the spirit is willing but the flesh is decidedly weaker. So we are looking for more able volunteers to help with these regular church activities and also those occasional ones below. If you can help in any way then please do get in touch with either Kieran on 01242 620763 or Anne on 01242 620351.

The Annual Christian Aid Collection May 13th - 19th

Collectors are urgently required for the annual Christian Aid Collection in Teddington and Alstone. If you are able to help with this then please get in touch with either Kieran or Anne. Thank you.

These collections raise around £9m across the UK every year for this important charity. We urgently need new volunteers to collect envelopes during the week 13th-19th May. If you could help, even with just a dozen houses, that would be great.

Alstone Defibrillator: A big thank you from the Alstone Playing Field Association to all those who helped raise funds by supporting events or donating. A total sum of £3,174 has been raised. We are delighted to announce that plans are going ahead to acquire and install the defibrillator and work has started on the telephone kiosk. We will hold an opening ceremony on completion. The Alstone Playing Field Association plans to hold the occasional fund raising event in order to cover future maintenance costs and we very much hope you'll continue to support us. Please join us for the event below. Date for your Diary: Saturday June 15th: A Summer Fete and Sports Day to be held on Alstone Playing Field. Fun for all the family. News From Beckford

Summertime in Beckford Well, of course it’s really only just Spring but plans are already afoot for a Summer celebration in this year when there’s no Open Village to be held in Beckford. So this is an advance notice to say “Hold the date!” - the date in question being Saturday 20th July - when once again we shall be having a garden party in a beautiful village garden, to raise funds for the church of St John the Baptist. Full details will appear in next month’s magazine but essentially there will be music, wine (plus other drinks of course) and canapés, all to be enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere on a Summer evening, with friends from surrounding villages and visitors from farther afield. This will be the third such biennial event we’ve held and it’s proved a very popular formula.

So - please put the date in your diaries and read further information in the May magazine!

Beckford Annual Church Meeting We’re grateful to the very small number of villagers who showed interest in church activities by attending the Annual Meeting which was held in church on Thursday 7th March. Sadly, Roger Palmer has decided it’s time he stood down from the committee and his resignation was accepted with regret. Otherwise, the committee will continue as before. Happily Graham Galer, as Secretary, and Pam Grice, as Treasurer, were content to continue their valuable work and were re-elected with great relief! In the absence of any other applications, David Carvill was nominated as Churchwarden for another year and his name will go forward for possible election at the Vestry Meeting on 28th March. Beckford Services for April We shall of course be joining in the United Service at Alstone on 7th April so there will be no BCP HC service in Beckford that day. On the following Sunday - Palm Sunday, 14th April, at 6pm - Roger Palmer (appropriately!) will lead us in an Evening Praise Service, which will be followed by refreshments. During Holy Week, as part of the Group worship pattern, there will be a CW HC in Beckford Church on Maundy Thursday at 7pm and this will be led by David Lewis. In a break from recent tradition, our Easter Day CW HC service will be held at 9am and Leonard Burn will preside. Beckford Coffee Morning Our monthly Coffee Morning will be held as usual, from 10.30am to 12 noon in Beckford chancel, on Friday, 26th April. Do come along and join in this pleasantly relaxed, social event which brings together villagers from the area and often includes passing visitors. A minimum donation secures a coffee or tea (with free refills) and a choice of home-made cakes and the funds raised benefit the church or, very often, different charities.

BECKFORD W.I. - March Report Our President, Margaret Darby welcomed 25 members and 3 visitors to the Village Hall on Monday 11th March. Since the last meeting the craft project to make chemotherapy driver bags for the patients at Cheltenham General Hospital had got off to a good start and several bags had been made. Members are due to attend the Annual Council Meeting of the Gloucestershire Federation of WIs at Cheltenham Town Hall and the local Spring Group Meeting of Tewkesbury group of WIs takes place in April when there will be a talk given by Duncan Coombs. There is to be a quarterly competition with a goblet as a trophy in memory of Margaret Lodge who died recently. Preparations are well under way for the events celebrating the Centenary of GFWI this year. Members were asked to donate small items suitable for the children’s lucky dip at the Treasure Island stall at the Summer Village Fair and picnic at Cirencester on July 6th. Beckford WI were entering a team for the WI County Quiz. The first round is being held at Toddington. The First Aid Course is being well supported and 10 members had signed up to update their skills.

After the birthday posies were presented and the raffle was drawn our President introduced the speaker for the evening, who was Chris Evans of the Butterfly Garden based at Bamfurlong near Cheltenham. Chris explained that the piece of land that the Butterfly Garden was on had been bought by his grandfather after

WW2, who despite knowing virtually nothing about plants wanted to set up as a horticulturist producing bedding plants commercially. Chris saw the work being done there and decided that this was what he wanted to do. After his Grandad died, Chris took over the business and continues to grow a variety of plants. He had always been fascinated by seed growing and was especially interested in unusual varieties of tomatoes and potatoes. He was approached by a local school who asked if a small group of autistic children could come and see him at work. He agreed to this and showed them how to plants seeds. The next day he was asked if another larger group could come and take part in his Special Needs Project. Word spread rapidly and soon more and more schools were asking if their children could come along. Although at first he had tried insisting that he was running a business and could only manage to have children once a week he found that more land was needed to give them a place to grow their plants and more time was needed to fit them all in. Not only that, people started bring materials for recycling and for the young people to work with. The project just grew and grew and more and more people got involved. Not just school age children but people of all ages who couldn’t seem to fit into the usual courses at college because they needed more support than could be provided in conventional educational establishments. Drama, dance and music groups started up and soon changing rooms and bigger kitchen facilities were required. All these activities are completely free and are carried out by means of a great kindness of spirit so that no matter what the disability, everyone meets up and works together without prejudice. They are all people together. There is still a garden centre at the site but it is not a conventional one though all are welcome to visit. Margaret thanked Chris for his inspiring talk and assured him that we would take him up on his invitation. The next meeting is on Monday 8th April at 7.30pm when the speaker will be Alan Pillbeam who will give a talk entitled “Old Paths of Gloucestershire”. Visitors are most welcome. At the committee evening on February 25th we continued to discuss contributions from member organisations on 'how to make the hall better'. Many ideas have been put forward, and we need to consider how to manage these, and the urgent need for some refurbishment, in the context of the much more radical longer-term proposal from the Tennis Club for a new complex on the site. At this meeting we said farewell and thanks to Roger Palmer, who for 15 years has loyally served on the committee as the representative of Beckford Church, a founder member of BCVH Ltd. As thinking and preparation goes on for a degree of refurbishment at the hall, we badly need some help in project planning and making applications for grants. Due to lack of resources we have been unable to make an application in time for Wychavon's annual community grant scheme. If one or two people could join a sub-committee for this purpose it would make things go much more smoothly and take some of the burden from our directors and officers. If you would like to help, or can suggest someone else, please come forward, by contacting any of the committee members.

Beckford Village Hall Quiz March 1st was very well attended and everyone enjoyed a lasagne supper followed by an excellent quiz. The evening raised £470.83 for the Hall. This is now going to become an annual event together with the Barn Dance. The next Barn Dance and supper will be on 28th September. On 5th October there will be a South American evening with a talk by Nick Clarke and lots of South American food! - details to follow. There will be several other events in between, so look out for the posters. I am also hoping to run a fun Dog Show in May and if anyone would like to help please let me know.

Alstone and Teddington Foodbank Update Question: What do long life milk, sponge puddings (including uneaten Christmas puddings!), coffee, jam, washing-up liquid and small packets of washing powder, all have in common? Answer: They are all currently on THE top of the Tewkesbury Food Bank Most Wanted list. That said, other items are always wanted too!!! In this issue, we had thought that rather than give you an update ourselves, we’d ask one of the team at Tewkesbury Food Bank, Marion Badham, to do that. Marion kindly mailed us along the following lines:

‘I am pleased to be able to reply to your question of how much food Teddington and Alstone villagers have donated to the Tewkesbury Foodbank so far this year. The amount you have all donated so far is 164.36 kgs of food/goods! We are most grateful to you all for your generous support; it means so much to our clients who are in crisis. By helping them with food, etc. you are not just feeding them, but you are helping to prevent them going into debt, or even further debt. Again, very many thanks, Marion Badham, T.F.B.’

We did worry that the initial enthusiasm would dry up, but we are pleased to report that so far there are no signs of that! If you can, then please continue to drop off your generous donations at either of our churches and we will whisk them away to Tewkesbury once a week. If you are not able to get to one of our churches then please contact either of us and we will come to you! As you can see your donations do and are making a difference.

St Barbara’s Church Services for April and Easter

Sunday 14th April - Palm Sunday. Village worship at 10:30am We shall start the Easter journey with palms, a story and a donkey…… An informal service led by the Church team will be followed by refreshments. Monday 15th April - Holy Week Reflections on the Easter Story at 7:00pm A presentation of holy week through eye-witness accounts of the events. Drama, music and meditation. With many thanks to Graham Pharo who will lead the evening and who has offered the material for this service. This promises to be an interesting and thought-provoking start to our solemn worship in Holy Week, leading up to the joyous occasion of Easter Day.

Sunday 21st April - EASTER DAY Family Service and Holy Communion with Rev David Lewis at 10:30am Followed by the traditional Easter egg hunt in the churchyard and Hot Cross buns!

Everyone is welcome to join us at any of these services.

It seems a long time since Christmas, when St Barbara’s enjoyed a very busy season. We are now settling into the new pattern of services which came in from the start of 2019. We continue to have a Communion service with Rev. David Lewis on the fourth Sunday of the month, and a Church team led Village Worship on either the first or second Sunday. This will vary of course, especially with Easter – see above. These have been an opportunity to try out new ideas in an informal way. We are enjoying the challenge and hope you do too. We have also been sharing services with our fellow churches in the Beckford group which is a lovely way to meet our neighbours and support each other.

Open Gardens Sunday Service

The usual Open Gardens Sunday Service has been changed to 10:30am on 9th June and the bell ringers have kindly agreed to ring for us at this time. And Looking Further Ahead: An Open the Book service and a church summer picnic are on the horizon.

ASHTON UNDER HILL W.I. - March Report

On Tuesday 5th March Marjy Facer welcomed 32 people to our meeting, including two new members. The business part of the meeting reported that Henrietta Cooke’s photographic record of a ‘Year in the Life of a WI’ has been selected for entry into the national competition. We are very pleased as we had all admired the montage of photos, and felt there were some very special photos shown. There are two theatre visits coming up to the Everyman Theatre in March and April and a visit to Hanbury Hall is planned for May. The Craft group has taken on the project of knitting baby bonnets for the Premature Babycare Unit in East Surrey where Jane Wilson’s granddaughter is a midwife. Later in the meeting we were able to present Sophie with 76 tiny hand-knitted bonnets. Our next task is ‘Angel Pockets’ for mums of stillborn babies. Other business included Open Gardens: members were asked to note the dates of June 8th and 9th for baking cakes and help with serving teas. Resolutions: the result of Ashton’s voting had favoured the motion on Rural Buses, with equal votes for four of the others. Votes are aggregated nationwide so we must wait to know the result. Birthday posies: seven posies in all were handed out. We sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Jen Creese for her special number birthday! Rob Hemming, a local writer and quiz show enthusiast, then gave an amusing talk entitled ‘The Trouble with Trivia’. Rob had kindly stepped in at short notice to entertain us with tales on his adventures on the TV Quiz circuit. His competitive nature came to the fore at times although he claimed that the best way was to enjoy the experience and not think about the money prizes too hard. I don’t think he believed this himself! His interest in quizzing was first piqued by ‘Trivial Pursuit’ in the 80s and a turning point came

when his wife applied for a pilot TV show no one had heard of. This turned out to be the ‘Weakest Link’ with Anne Robinson. His wife came second so not to be outdone Rob entered the show and also came second, describing himself as the grumpy candidate whom everyone loved to hate. He managed to get himself selected for two pilot shows which were never made and then a big moment came when he appeared on ITVs ‘The Chase’ in 2011.

He was selected for ‘ Mastermind’ and appeared on that show, not once but three times. These were several years apart and on the last occasion he reached the semi-finals. Curiously three of the candidates had tied for 1st place and he just missed going into the final by one point on the tie-break question. Rob certainly seemed to possess the right type of personality for quiz shows, being able to handle the pressure of TV, an amazing ability to remember and recall facts, enjoying the adrenalin rush, and being naturally very competitive. It made for a very entertaining talk and there were lots of questions such as – are the shows fixed in some way? (NO), do you get friendly with the other competitors? (NO), have you won much in prize money? (NO), and can you answer questions on pop music? (NO) Our next meeting is on 2nd April when Ginny Davis will talk about “To the Fringe and Beyond”. ASHTON OPEN GARDENS - Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June The theme this year for the whole village is “The Lost Words”. We shall be delighted to play host to displays of writing, poems and drawings from both Ashton First School and Bredon Hill Academy which have been inspired by this beautiful illustrated book. Our team of flower arrangers is already planning some fabulous arrangements to complement the “Lost Words”. Intrigued? Come and see what it is all about. There will also be live organ music.

Appeal There will be a Village Produce stall this year to add to the already varied stalls at the village hall. Plants – do pot up or save any surplus garden plants for us to sell. Small or large! Jams and chutneys will also be on for sale, donations welcomed.

News from Overbury

Overbury News The end of February and start of March has indeed proved to be a period of meteorological contrast, swinging from balmy temperatures more indicative of summer, then returning to deep winter with frost, snow flurries and strong winds. How this would have interested Freddie Wood who sadly died on 10th February: his funeral took place on March 12th. See the next page for more thoughts on Freddie. Work continues on the vestry and installation of toilet facilities: all is proceeding smoothly so far! We are looking forward to Mothering Sunday on 31st March, preceded by the churchyard tidy-up on Saturday 30th March. We will also join in celebrating the marriage of April Wale and Matthew Hunter on April 6th. April’s mother grew up in Overbury, the daughter of Eddie and Mary Yapp, Eddie being one of the gamekeepers. Rev Rick Tett is leading the Lent Course on Friday afternoons at 3pm in Overbury: for venues please ring Faith Hallett on 01386 725206. The Course is based on the TV series “Broken” which is very thought- provoking and deals with many important social and moral issues. These sessions are definitely not confined to C of E churchgoers; everyone is welcome and we would love to hear your views.

Memories of Freddie Wood Family and friends of Freddie Wood of Overbury met at St Faith’s at 11am on Tuesday 12th March to join in a celebration of his life. In tribute to his many years of bell-ringing, the bells pealed before the service, and his warm and gentle personality was reflected in readings and hymns in a service led by Rev Jan Moore and Rev Margie Schutte. Freddie was born in Kemerton on the 27th March 1929. He moved to Overbury in 1967 with his mother and sister Elsie. In 1977 he married Anne Stockton and they moved to School Lane where they lived together for 41 years. In 1984 their daughter Joan was born. Freddie adored Anne and Joan, and was loved and respected by many. After a prolonged period of illness bravely borne he died shortly before his 90th birthday Freddie was always a man of the land and a very hard worker all his life, beginning as a youngster, digging potatoes after school in the war effort, feeding the pigs before school, and working in the market garden. His father was the manager of the fruit farm above Bells Castle, and on leaving school young Freddie worked here, starting at 6:30am. The fruit - apples, pears, plums and cherries - went by train to the Midlands markets so Freddie had to take the fruit to Bredon Station by horse and dray down the steep hill past Bells Castle - a hazardous trip. He also had the responsibility of collecting all the female fruit pickers in the trailer to take them to the farm. After the fruit farm closed, Freddie worked on the maintenance of Overbury Estate, mending fences and gates, digging drains (he had an amazing knowledge of the convoluted drainage system on the Hill), and planting hedges and trees which continue to demonstrate his knowledge and care all over the estate. He became Head Woodsman and carried out this work with his characteristic skill and attention to detail. Freddie also worked on the harvest when there were 6 combines and 9 trailers working to take the corn to the driers. He was also a superb dry stone wall repairer, and a master at identifying apples and pears. He was presented with a Long-Service Medal by Princess Alexandra in 1991 which gave him free entrance to the Malvern 3 Counties Show, a source of great delight. Freddie retired in 1994 giving him more opportunity to follow his interests. The natural world surrounding us all fascinated Freddie. He was intrigued by the weather and kept detailed daily meteorological records in Overbury for 60 years as a recognised member of the Meteorological Society. His popular and fascinating monthly reports in the Parish Magazine kept readers interested in seasonal changes; he described wild life and commented on astronomy. Freddie’s knowledge of all flora and fauna was considerable, often observing scarce and rare species. The mechanical world also interested him - propeller aeroplanes and engines in particular. His knowledge and interest in aircraft kept him aware of the latest developments, and he had a great ability to recognise aircraft flying over Bredon Hill. One of Freddie’s great loves was bell-ringing, and this is where he met his beloved wife Anne. He also rang hand bells, and many remembering him ringing with children in Overbury. Freddie was a gentle and humble man, and he will be missed by many, but we have been privileged to meet him and to share in his love and knowledge for the natural world.

Joan and I would like to thank the many people who helped to put together a lovely memorial service for Freddie - Jan and Margie who gave us a very special service, Anne who played the organ so very well, Andrew for his thoughtful eulogy, all the people who do the very important “little things” in church that nobody thinks about until they are not done, the bell ringers, the people who set up the village hall with the impressive display encapsulating Freddie’s earlier years at work, and the wonderful spread so very generously provided for the wake, as well as those who made the tea and coffee and did the washing up. Also to the many people who attended the service, and the kind friends who sent us cards, not all of whom live in Overbury. Joan and I thank you all, Anne Wood

TRUSTEE VACANCIES

In 2019 two of the longest serving Trustees are retiring from their posts administering Beckford Nature Reserve as their term of office comes to an end. In addition, the Treasurer is also stepping down having reached retirement age. Someone with the appropriate financial skills is needed to fill this post. The team of Trustees would therefore welcome applications from individuals who would like to take on the role of Trustee. If you enjoy the special place which is our nature reserve and feel you could help maintain the amenity for everyone who visits, then please consider becoming a Trustee. We meet six times year, once every two months and there is an AGM in addition. The conservation warden is planning to stay in post but not as a Trustee. We would encourage anyone who has IT skills, particularly with regard to social media, to join the Board. This would involve assisting with updating the website and helping to improve general communication about the management of the reserve.
