hat makes this even more intriguing is that the ZX345USLC-6, which is owned by Marlon Hall and Chris Veenstra of Metric Civil

Contractors, isn’t the only “first” in their fleet. The two owners also took delivery of the very first ZX245USLC-5 to land in North America a few years earlier.

The two “first” machines weren’t coincidental, but rather the deliberate effort of a self-described machine enthusiast.

“Owning construction equipment and purchasing the equipment is like being a kid in a candy store, only it’s really expensive candy,” Hall laughed. “When we saw the ZX345USLC-6 preview machine at CONEXPO last year we made a conscious decision that we were going to get one as soon as it was available. Knowing the model was coming, we were able to look at some of our jobs where the footprint of the ZX350 or ZX290 was too big and really plan ahead. When we heard it was available, I immediately called our dealer and ordered it on the spot.”

With persistence, impeccable timing and some quick work by their dealer, Richard Batten of Wajax Equipment helped make Hall and Veenstra’s dream a reality.

the leap and form Metric Civil Contractors in 2012.

The two connected with Wajax Equip-ment, who helped them lease their first Hitachi excavator, and the duo hasn’t looked back since. Metric now has a fleet of eight Hitachi excavators and 30 employees. Recently, the company was designated by the British Columbia Construction Safety Alliance as a Certif-icate of Recognition (COR™) company. The designation is a prestigious safety standard that took more than three years to achieve and has set them apart from others in the marketplace.

THE RIGHT EQUIPMENTHall’s passion for equipment goes beyond his thirst for being the first to receive new Hitachi models – walk onto one of his job sites and you can immediately tell the fleet is owned by someone who has had extensive operating experience. The machines are clean. Everything has its place. And beyond the sounds of buckets digging and trucks running, there is not a clang to be heard.

“I grew up in a logging family, so I was always around equipment,” Hall said. “Having been an operator for many years, I know what makes a good operator and how important it is to take care of the machines. It’s a top priority for us to keep the equipment in the best shape we can for our operators – our people are our biggest assets, so we want to keep them happy, comfortable, and up and running with nice equipment.”

Although Hall’s partner, Veenstra, doesn’t quite share Hall’s obsession with construction equipment, he recognizes the importance of choosing the right machine for the job.

“I’m passionate about what we do and how we do it, and having the right equipment for the right job definitely allows us to complete the projects we’re working on and that’s what I’m passion-ate about – doing good work,” he said.

FROM THE GROUND UPVeenstra and Hall were high school friends and had always talked about starting their own construction company. They took their own professional paths in the construction field – Veenstra as an engineer and project manager and Hall as a field superintendent – and eventually decided to make

“Getting COR certified was really important to us because of our people,” Hall said. “Our people are our biggest assets and they’ve got to go home safe. We want everyone to work safely and enjoy being at work.”

Hitachi has been part of Metric’s growth from the very beginning – and today all eight machines in their fleet are Hitachi excavators, ranging in size from a ZX50U-5 to the new ZX345USLC-6.

“Since I was an operator in the past, I spent a lot of time running all kinds of different equipment and Hitachi was always one piece of equipment that I enjoyed operating,” Hall said. “It’s great equipment. It doesn’t fail us.”

The new ZX345USLC-6 is no exception.

“When we saw the 345 at CONEXPO, we could definitely see the benefits of having a machine that size

with the reduced-tail-swing radius,” Veenstra said. “It’s

especially useful for road work or underground utility projects – the

counterweight is essentially gone but you still have the power and the reach to be able to perform work that other reduced-tail-swing machines aren’t able to do currently.”

For Hall, the full-size cab and the hydraulics of the ZX345USLC-6 were also big selling factors.

“You get a guy who is six feet or more, then you really need a big cab for them to be comfortable,” he said. “The new TRIAS II pump system also really makes a difference in operating and loading and maneuvering the machine.”

With Metric’s continued growth, Hall and Veenstra don’t anticipate it will be long before it will be time to add another Hitachi to their fleet. Whether it will be another “first” machine will remain to be seen.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Veenstra said with a smile.

Barrancas

EH5000

HitachiConstruction.com8 |

The Colombian town of Barrancas – tucked in a valley between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains and the Serraní a del Perijá – has found a unique way to showcase the community’s mining ties. City officials formed a partnership with the local coal mine of Cerrejón, CHM Mining and Hitachi to put an EH5000 mining truck on display.

The EH5000 now sits next to Agua Luna Park and is the largest mining truck on display in Colombia.

Barrancas Mayor Jorge Cerchiaro felt it was important to find an emblem of the community that tourists could enjoy and capture in photos. In addition, the exhibition also serves as a way to educate Colombians and tourists about mining and coal extraction.

“If we hadn’t joined together, we wouldn’t have been able to get to this point, which was very important, not only to provide the department of La Guajira and the municipality with information on what mining and coal extraction is all about, but also for the many people in Colombia to get to know about it through tourism,” said Margarita Morelos, CHM Mining human resources manager.

EH5000 making a big impact in Colombia

The Hitachi EH5000 weighs roughly 470,000 pounds and measures more

than 23 feet in height with a payload of 347 tons. Tourists can stop to take photos with the massive machine that is four times their height and has wheels that are double their height.

The display, which opened in April 2018, took more than two years to come

to fruition. Cerchiaro initiated the project when he asked partners to find a way to show the mining community to tourists. The Cerrejón mine generously donated the EH5000 that is now on display. It was the third truck to ever be used at the mine, and many of the community members who work at the mine have personal anecdotes about working with the machine.

Those stories are now connected with the many new memories created for the tourists seeing Colombia’s largest mining truck on display. ■

KEWEENAW COUNTY ROAD COMMISSION

A new ZX190W-6 has rolled onto the fleet of the Keweenaw County Road Commission (KCRC) in Mohawk, Mich.

KCRC built the county road system and most of the state highways throughout the county from the 1910s to the 1960s. It primarily provides winter and summer maintenance for the 481 lane miles of state and county roads.

The ZX190W-6 has tackled a variety of tasks since its delivery in spring 2018.

“The Hitachi 190 is our ‘go-to’ machine whether we’re ditching, replacing culverts, backfilling, undercutting and for any kind of digging,” said Chris Cronenworth, KCRC maintenance foreman. “We chose the wheeled excavator over a tracked machine because of its versatility and ease of transportation to and from jobs.”

New ZX190W-6 on a roll in Keweenaw County

FUN FACT:The average snowfall per year for Keweenaw County is 242 inches! The county’s record for annual snowfall is 390.4 inches in 1978-79 as shown on a life-size meter in Mohawk, Mich. The Keweenaw County Road Commission has plowed snow as early as October and as late as May. Not surprisingly, snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country skiing and downhill skiing are popular in the winter months.

David Kaura, KCRC operator for the ZX190W-6, said he enjoys running the machine.

“The controls are effortless, and the cab is nice,” Kaura said. “I like the temperature control and the heated seat.”

KCRC partnered with local Hitachi dealer McCoy Construction & Forestry to order the ZX190W-6.

“We worked closely with McCoy when it came to spec’ing the machine,” said Gregg Patrick, KCRC engineer/manager. “They listened to what we needed and made sure we got the best machine for our work.”

ringing down a 60-degree, 180-foot highwall is just part of the daily workload for a Hitachi EX2500-6 at Peabody, a thermal coal surface mine located 10 miles north of Gillette, Wyo.

“The Hitachi EX2500-6 excavator is used to bring down the highwall in the pit,” said Eric Martin, general manager of Rawhide Mine.

Operating 23 surface mines in the U.S. and Australia, Peabody is the leading global pure-play coal company and a member of the Fortune 500. The company serves power and steel customers in more than 25 countries on six continents. Rawhide Mine was acquired from Exxon Coal and Minerals Company in 1994.

The EX2500-6 is just one of several Hitachi mining excavators in the company’s fleet, which also includes shovels operating at its North Antelope Rochelle Mine (NARM), the largest coal mine in the world; and at its Caballo Mine.

Peabody’s Rawhide Mine, Caballo Mine and NARM are all located in the Powder River Basin (PRB), the largest producing coal region in Wyoming. These PRB operations have earned more than 25 honors for safety and environmental excellence since 2006. Among those honors, Rawhide Mine earned the Small Surface Operation Safety Award from the Wyoming Mining Association and the Wyoming State Inspector of Mines for the best safety performance in 2013.

“Safety is ingrained in our company culture as our leading core value,” Martin said. “Employees at Rawhide Mine are like family; we look out for each other.”

CYCLE OF SUSTAINABILITYMining isn’t the only activity taking place at Rawhide Mine. Peabody views land restoration as an essential part of the mining process and manages land reclamation with pride and a spirit of sustainability.

In 2017, the company restored 5,145 acres of coal-mined lands globally. These efforts are visually evident at Rawhide Mine with reclaimed land supporting abundant wildlife and vegetation.

“It’s important to be good stewards of the land,” Martin said. “We work simultaneously to reclaim coal-mined land as quickly as possible to continue a sustainable cycle.”

RELIABLE PERFORMANCE

The EX2500-6 is helping the operation mine two seams of coal at Rawhide Mine – the Smith seam and the Roland seam – which range up to 120 feet in thickness. An on-site processing plant crushes and sizes the coal, which is then loaded on rail cars for distribution. In 2017, the mine sold 10.3 million tons of coal and provided $160 million worth of direct and indirect economic benefits.

Peabody partnered with local Hitachi dealer Arnold Machinery to acquire the EX2500-6 for Rawhide Mine.

“We have a long partnership with Arnold Machinery,” Martin said.

Operators at the mine appreciate that the 2500 is smooth and the cab is quiet, which is important when working 12-hour shifts.

“ IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE GOOD STEWARDS OF THE LAND. WE WORK SIMULTANEOUSLY TO RECLAIM COAL-MINED LAND AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE TO CONTINUE A SUSTAINABLE CYCLE.”

IT’S SAFE TO SAY that Declan Kavanagh is a modern day “Renais-sance man” – he’s experienced in motorcycle engine repair, painting and ranching, among other things.

Kavanagh is also self-taught in large engine mechanical repair and gained experience in the mining in-dustry. He is currently putting these skills to good use as a field service technician at Arnold Machinery Company in Gillette, Wyo.

And most importantly, he recently became the first mining technician

in North America to achieve Hitachi’s Capstone

Certification, the company’s most prestigious and highest level of technician training.

However, this achievement is not overly surprising to those who know Kavanagh.

“Declan is an extremely smart, skilled and proactive technician,” said Tom Gorton, service manager at Arnold Machinery. “In addition to achieving the certification, Declan personally created an extensive machine service audit report that we now use throughout the dealership. He’s a huge asset to our team.”

Originally from Ireland, Kavanagh immigrated to the U.S. in 2000 and has worked as a technician at Arnold Machinery for four years.

“It’s humbling to earn this certification from a reputable company like Hitachi,” Kavanagh said. “It’s really important as a technician to know what you’re doing, especially when downtime can cost thousands of dollars.”

Capstone Certification is a culmina-tion of foundational classes along with hands-on training available for Hitachi’s full line of construction and mining equipment. A majority of the foundational classes are offered online with the final Capstone class being an instructor-led course. Managerial support is key to technician education.

“Allowing the necessary time to take the foundational classes enables future success for our technicians,” said Adam Coleman, branch man-ager at Arnold Machinery in Gillette, Wyo. “We know the certification is worth our investment as a major value-add for our customers.”

To honor Kavanagh and his achieve-ment, Hitachi Mining Division representatives Shawn Riley, manager of product training and

information; Craig Steinhauser, manager of customer support; and Andy Nicolas, territory customer support manager; as well as Arnold Machinery representatives Tom Gorton, service manager; and Terry Stewart, vice president of mining product support; presented Kavanagh with a framed certificate and custom Hitachi jacket at the Arnold Machinery dealership in Gillette, Wyo., on Aug. 27, 2018.

“We’re proud to recognize Declan as the first mining technician in North America to achieve this certification,” Riley said. “We appreciate Declan’s commitment to keeping Hitachi machines running at peak performance and hope more technicians will be inspired to look into the program as well.”

Gorton said Kavanagh has already inspired other technicians at Arnold Machinery.

“Now that Declan’s raised the bar, we have more than a dozen technicians working through the Capstone Certification program,” Gorton said. “We’re a ‘Silver Service’ dealer at Arnold Machinery, and that means we pride ourselves on taking care of the customer and putting them first. Having extremely qualified technicians is an important part of that.”

Along with inspiring other technicians, Kavanagh is also sharing his love of Hitachi – his son Malachy recently became the youngest member of Hitachi’s fan club The HERD.

“Hitachi makes powerful machines, and the operators love them. There is a lot of effort in designing the machines before Hitachi offers them to customers. And most of all, I like the orange color,” Kavanagh said, smiling. ■
