The Regions of France
Alsace
Alsace is in
eastern France and
borders with
Germany.
Departments
Bas-Rhin constitutes
the northern half of
the Alsacian region.
The department is
bordered by
Germany to the
north and to the
east. The Haut-Rhin
department covers
the southern half of
the Alsace region It
is bounded by the
department of Bas-
Rhin to the north,
the Rhine River to
the east, Switzerland
to the south, the
region of Franche-
Comté to the
southwest .
Regional Capital
Strasbourg- Strasbourg is the capital of Alsace. Strasbourg means town of roads. Strasbourg is in Bas Rhin. The charming city has a very traditional half-timber architecture, cuisine and wines, the wooden structure in the buildings make the city very attractive.
Geography
Alsace is 275 miles away from Paris. Alsace is in the heart of Europe. And borders with Switzerland and Germany. Alsace is 190 km long from North to South. Has fresh ponds and lakes. The most famous is lac blanc has an altitude of 1,055 meters. There are 13 ski resorts. Snow in some areas of Alsace like
CastleHaut-
Koenigsbourg is a
castle in Alsace.
This castle is
located at
Orschwiller ,
Alsace. A coalition
of cities of cities
attacked and
burned the castle
in 1462.
Beautiful Village
This is one of the
most beautiful
villages in Alsace.
It is in the region
of Haut-Rhin and
is the village
called Hunawihr.
It is beautiful
with its sights of
the flower garden
and beautiful
church and
cemetery.
FoodMunster cheese
is a soft paste
cheese with a
washed rind. It
was first made
by the monks of
the monastery.
It is produced in
a traditional
way, with
special
standards since
1969.
FlagThis is the flag
of Alsace.
These arms are
based on the
Alsatian arms.
The white arms
are
representing
lower Alsace
and the gold
crowns
represent
upper Alsace.
The arms have
been designed
and used by
the regional
council since
the 1990’s.
FestivalsThe high point of the
Alsatian festive year is
December, which begins
with the feast of Saint
Nicolas with its songs,
legends and
gingerbread.
Christmastime gradually
approaches and the
streets are lit up with
Christmas lights, the
Christmas markets are
set up in the squares
and the delicious
fragrance of cinnamon
and biscuits can be
enjoyed in Alsace's
streets and homes.
Monuments
The
Kappellturm
Belfry- Being
59, 60 meters
high this
watch tower
stands behind
the city hall. It
was destroyed
in 1873. The
belfry served
for the city as
a watchtower.
CostumesThe region is
famous for Alsatian
Headdress but it
was abandoned in
1945. Today, this
can only be admired
during certain
cultural and tourist
events.
Consequently,
Protestant women
in the North would
wear the colors of
their choosing,
where as Catholics
from Kochersberg
(to the north-west of
Strasbourg) wore
only ruby red.
