1)Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often
called as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is aprogressive neurodegenerative disease thataffects nerve cells in the brain and the spinalcord. It is a form of motor neuron disease.

2)The progressive degeneration of the motor
neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death.

Symptoms of ALS
• Initial stage symptoms of ALS often includeincreasing muscle weakness, especiallyinvolving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing.

• When muscles no longer receive the messages
from the motor neurons that they require tofunction, the muscles begin to become smaller.Limbs begin to look "thinner" as muscle tissue
atrophies.

•Although the cause of ALS is not completely
understood, the recent years have brought awealth of new scientific understanding regardingthe physiology of this disease.

Based on a research done at the Nutrition Unit ,ALS Center, Limoges,CHU it was concluded thatPhase Angle as a prognostic Factor for survivalin ALS.

1)PrognostiCheck® illustrates where thepatient is on the trajectory of the progression ofALS and shows the ‘Burden of the Illness’ the
patient is experiencing. For instance if thenormal Scoring value for the patient is 7 andtheir value is 5 the loss of 2 is the burden of
disease experienced by this patient.

2) Phase angle of an entity provides a reliableand objective index and is a survival
prognostic factor in several diseases.

3)Phase angle was measured on a sampleof 168 ALS patients and an analysis between
PA and factors like neurological, respiratoryand nutritional status are considered todetermine whether PA is an independent
prognostic factor for survival in ALS.

5) To access the prognostic role of phase anglein ALS patients, survival analysis based on
Kaplan-Meier method using log rank test andon univariate and multivariate COXProportional hazard model was used.

6) Baseline time was time from multidisciplinaryvisit(T1) to death or censoring time.
7)Studies have confirmed that Phase Angle (PA)was always significantly lower in ALS patients.

8) Phase Angle was lower in ALS malnourishedpatients than in non-malnourished patients.
9) Patients with PA < 2.5 degree had asignificantly poorer survival rate than patients
with PA >2.5.
