The Walk to Defeat ALS™ is heading for another record-breaking year, and

we need your help to finish out strong. This year, we need the involvement of

everyone in the ALS community to meet our $1 million goal.

During the last several months, we’ve been working hard to make sure the

2010 Walks are the best yet. In November and December, we held special com-

munity breakfasts where dozens of corporate leaders made the decision to be

involved in the spring Walks. Recently, family team walkers and captains also

joined at Walk kick-off parties around the state where they learned the best

tips and tricks to becoming a top fundraising team.

You can register today at www.WalktoDefeatALS.org. It’s fast and easier

than ever before. Even if you can’t be present on the day of the Walk, you

can still form a team and raise money for the fight against ALS as a “virtual

walker.” Everyone who registers receives an online fundraising page that can

be customized with personal information. You can then ask your family and

friends to donate to your team online!

The most successful walkers use this online participant center to update

their personal page with stories and photos. We’ve also found that some of

the best fundraisers send emails asking friends and family to make a dona-

tion and join their team. In fact, walkers who send emails through the online

participant center raise 10 times more, on average, than walkers who don’t

send emails! Don’t forget, we can help you with all of these steps, and if

you’re confused or just too busy, we’ll even complete them for you! Just give

us a call. 888-257-1717

VIRTUAL WALK ANYTIME, ANYWHERE

We work hard to make sure every dollar you do-

nate has maximum impact on the fight against ALS.

From patient programs to global cutting-edge re-

search, your fundraising efforts for The Walk to

Defeat ALS™ will never go to waste. We pride

ourselves in functioning with a high standard of

efficiency. According to Charity Navigator, Amer-

ica’s Premier Charity Evaluator, the most efficient

charities spend less than 10% of their budget on

fundraising, less than 15% on administration, and

at least 75% of their budget on the services they

exist to provide.

Your donations help to empower more than 600

ALS patients living in the sunshine state to live full-

er lives. Through care, advocacy, research, edu-

cation, and support, you are helping us to make a

difference for people living with ALS. We provide

critical assistance for patients and their families at

every stage of the disease through patient care

management, assistive technology, medical equip-

ment loan programs, respite care, support groups,

and multidisciplinary ALS clinics. Every year, The

ALS Association also invests millions of dollars

in research conducted by the best and brightest

scientists in the world. Because of the support

of foundations, corporate partners, and individu-

als just like you, we can continue to give help and

hope to those facing a devastating disease.

Duval Dealers Provide Hope

After being touched by ALS, the Duval Dealers

of Jacksonville have decided to do their part in the

fight against ALS with a donation that could poten-

tially total up to $50,000.

Scott-McRae Group, the Duval Dealers’ parent

company, has experienced the devastation caused

by ALS first-hand after their well-known president

and CEO, Henry (Tip) Graham, Jr., was diag-

nosed with the illness in 2007. Ever since, they

have channeled their long history of community

support to the fight against ALS.

From now until the end of February 2010, the

Duval Dealers will donate $25 for every car sold at

one of their four Jacksonville locations. The money,

which is expected to total nearly $50,000, will ben-

efit the Duval Dealers ALS Fund for North Florida.

The ALS Association Florida Chapter will use the

funds to help support North Florida families facing

a devastating diagnosis of ALS. In 2008, Scott-

McRae Group also donated a large office space to

The ALS Association Florida Chapter and allowed

us to open and operate our first-ever office in the

Jacksonville area.

We thank Scott-McRae group for their long-

time commitment to the community and to the fight

against ALS. Show them your appreciation too!

Shop Duval Dealers of Jacksonville soon, and you

can make a purchase which will ultimately provide

hope to hundreds suffering with ALS.

While previous studies have indicated a “probable” connection

between smoking and ALS, a new study claims that smoking may

now be considered an “established” risk factor for ALS.

The findings come from Baystate Medical Center neurologist

Dr. Carmel Armon who came to this conclusion using evidence-

based methods to perform a rigorous analysis of studies examining

the link between smoking and developing ALS. His findings were

announced in the Nov. 17, 2009 issue of Neurology®, the medical

journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Prior to this report, no external factors have been implicated with

this level of confidence as contributing to the occurrence of spo-

radic ALS.

“Application of evidence-based methods separates better-designed

studies from studies with limitations that may not be relied on. The bet-

ter-designed studies show consistently that smoking increases the

risk of developing ALS, with some findings suggesting that smoking

may be implicated directly in causing the disease,” said Dr. Armon,

a professor of neurology at Tufts University School of Medicine and

chief of neurology at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He is

also a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.

According to Dr. Armon, identifying smoking as an established

risk factor for ALS has three implications.

“First and foremost the findings provide a link between the envi-

ronment and the occurrence of ALS, where none had been previ-

ously identified with this level of certainty,” said Dr. Armon.

“Additional implications are that since smoking has no redeeming

features, avoidance of smoking may reduce the occurrence of ALS

in the future, and since some of the mechanisms by which smoking

causes other diseases in humans are understood fairly well, recog-

nizing its role in the occurrence of ALS may help pinpoint the bio-

logical processes that initiate the disease,” added the researcher.

The neurologist noted that focusing on processes at initiation of

sporadic ALS, and close to it, may provide new avenues to treat-

ment to stop its progression.

“This has been realized in some animal models of familial ALS,

but not in humans. The hope that these concepts may apply to

sporadic disease and change its outlook in the future is supported

by establishing the association of smoking with ALS occurrence,”

concluded Dr. Armon.

“… focusing on processes at

initiation of sporadic ALS,

and close to it, may provide

new avenues to treatment to stop its

progression”

Shelly decided to spearhead The ALS Associa-

tion Florida Chapter’s first-ever bike ride to defeat

Lou Gehrig’s Disease after ALS devastated her

family with her mother’s diagnosis. In an effort to

give meaning to her mother’s difficult journey, this

event was created.

On November 7, after months of preparation and

promoting, hundreds gathered at Walsingham Park

in Pinellas County to ride their bikes at the brand

new event. Hoping to make a difference for all ALS

patients suffering like Shelly’s mom, cycling enthu-

siasts joined forces, raised funds, and rode one of

three routes (5-Mile, 25-Mile, or 100 K). Support-

ers traveled from all over Florida, and even as far as

Pennsylvania, to take part in the action. Corporate

partners, families and friends of ALS patients, and

even firefighters formed teams to help us meet our

goal.

Shelly’s mom, Rosalind Jeffrey, arrived at Tour de

Vie bringing hope and courage to the celebration.

With speech severely impacted by ALS, Roz greet-

ed the riders from her manual wheelchair. Later

that evening, Roz celebrated her 66th birthday hav-

ing already received her most cherished gift – an

event that honored her journey with ALS and the

battles of hundreds of others facing the disease.

TOUR DE VIE 2009 | A CYCLING SUCCESS

It took planning, creativity, and passion to pull it off. Tour de Vie 2009

wowed more than 200 riders and raised over $53,000 thanks to the hard

work of a determined volunteer committee, with their fearless leader

Shelly Reale at the helm.

After an inspiring morning, we tallied up the funds

raised and celebrated success. The money raised

through Tour de Vie will support continuing patient

programs and research to find a cure. Thanks to all

of you who rode, volunteered, planned, sponsored

and donated, we have taken another big step in the

fight against ALS and given patients like Roz a rea-

son to hope that one day we can end the suffering

caused by ALS.

Since Tour de Vie 2009 turned out to be such

a huge success, we’re ready to do it again! You

can help this ride grow and become an enormous

event that makes an impact for people living with

ALS. We want your ideas and enthusiasm on our

planning committee for next year. To learn more
