About Alpaca Expeditions Alpaca Expeditions was started by Raul Ccolque Ccolque in 2012. He was born and raised in the Andean village Seqqueraccay where he was the middle child of 5, with 2 brothers and 2 sisters. His younger brother, Ronald, started working and helping manage Alpaca right from the beginning and the two of them have worked together to make Alpaca a family. Today, Alpaca is employing 20 full time Tour Guides, 16 Chefs and over 100 of the best porters in the Andes. Everyone on our team is provided with proper equipment including warm jackets and comfortable boots, proper salaries and insurance. Raul was a porter and a guide before he started Alpaca and made over 750 treks to Machu Picchu. While on the mountain he saw many companies teams wearing improper shoes or suffering from too much weight on their backs. He has been a champion of the porter and fights to get better treatment and facilities for them. Over the years, things have improved but we believe more can be done for these men who make these amazing adventures happen.

If you are interested in visiting some off the beaten path ruins like Vilcabamba or Choqueriaw, we can take you there as well. Even for those who enjoy hiking and not camping, we have an overnight trek visiting Huchuy Qosqo ruins or a full day of hiking the Inca Trail and then overnight in a hotel in Aguas Calientes. If you are up for the challenge, we have an amazing adventure waiting for you.

ALPACA EXPEDITIONS DAY TOURS

Our Day Tours are all done privately by an Alpaca Expeditions guide. Because of that, we are able to customize our tours to meet your needs. If you prefer shopping at the amazing Pisaq market for a little longer or you haven’t had enough Inca history and need more time spent in Ollantaytambo fortress, it’s not a problem. We can create a customized itinerary (including hotel bookings if you like – it’s up to you!). We are here to help no matter how big or small your needs are. And don’t forget, we can bring you to Machu Picchu by train as well. The ruins are amazing to visit no matter if its by foot or rail.

ALPACA EXPEDITIONS FOOD & EQUIPMENT

FOOD Our chefs are all trained and take cooking courses every February to fine tune their skills. We use fresh ingredients that are all local and we take all food restrictions very seriously.

EQUIPMENT All our tents are Eureka 4-man Timberline tents, shared by only 2 people. We bring private, eco-friendly portable toilet tents for the use of our trekkers. Every trekker receives a small pillow, foam mat, rain poncho and daypack cover. We rent out Black Diamond Trekking Poles and Thermarest 3 inch inflatable sleeping pads for those who are interested. We have the best equipment!

OUR COMMUNITY

Alpaca Expeditions is dedicated to making our own community healthier and stronger. In 2014 we started a social project by supporting the 204 children that live in the town of Wakatinku, at the base of the Sacred Valley’s largest peak, Ausangate (elev. 21,000 ft/6400 mtrs). Some of them come from as much as 2 hours away to attend school and we provided them with school supplies and some basic hygiene items such as soap and toothbrushes. We promised to come back and help them with a tree planting project. A year ago we helped the villagers plant seeds from the only surviving tree which is indigenous to this area, the Queuña tree (Polylepis, also known as the Andean Oak). Around Christmas time, we returned to help them plant these 3000 seedlings in the surrounding farmlands of the village and school. Forty-five villagers helped the Alpaca Expeditions team put them in the ground. Within 2-3 years, these trees will begin to contribute to this area with their natural benefits. Every February, when the Inca Trail is closed and the city is quiet, we spend time on the mountains helping to clean the trails we trek every day. We walked slowly and cleaned the trail to Huchuy Qosqo and we felt lucky to be chosen to help clean the Inca Trail by the National Park (SERNAP) in Peru. We will make sure the Inka Trail has never been cleaner. We take pride in our homeland and hope we can help the people and environment around us thrive!

All of the above treks spend the last night at a hotel in Aguas Calientes which is included and the last day is spent at Machu Picchu which they will bus up to with their guide.

Our alternative treks are done with different itineraries than any other company in Cusco, allowing a more “off the beaten path” experience for the trekker and away from any crowd. We have something for everyone: a visit to the amazing ruins of Choqueriaw, time spent with local villagers to learn about their way of life on the Lares trek, a close visit to the snow peaks of Salkantay, even just a day hike through the beautiful scenery of the Sacred Valley to Huchuy Qosqo.

4D/3N Choqueriaw Trek $615 $570

These treks are all camping and do not visit Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu is of course the main destination for many travelers, but some more experienced hikers are more interested in the beauty of the Andes and getting lost with no other travelers in sight. These treks are further from Cusco, and full of the rich colors the Andes have to offer.
