HWS HOT TIP: Watercolor experts have a neat trick for avoiding paper buckling. They moisten the back of their paper and let it dry before putting water on the front to create a painting. This handy hint makes framing the work much easier when it’s ready.

HAVE YOU EVER TRIED POURING YOUR WATERCOLORS? This technique is so much fun, and master artist Jean Grastorf can show you her signature method on the dvd, “Pouring Transparent Watercolor with Jean Grastorf”, HWS dvd #131.

Jean uses watercolors without a brush, masking areas she wants to save as white or a light value and allowing the watery colors to mingle and create beautiful blends. Her pouring technique is great for loosening up and getting lively backgrounds in your own paintings.

To borrow this dvd contact Jane Houk at 262-4448 or email her at HYPERLINK "mailto:[email protected]" [email protected]. Instructions for borrowing can be found on the HWS website. Click on “Membership” then “Library” then “Video/DVD List” to see the entire library listing. Also, please remember that it is each member’s responsibility to note the deadline and return the dvds on time. Mahalo, and enjoy!

EVER WONDER WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE ON THE HWS BOARD OF DIRECTORS? We recently asked our Board members for their feedback, and here’s what some of them had to say.

“I’ve enjoyed the satisfaction of making a contribution, however small, to HWS. I’ve met and gotten to know many artists by being on the Board, learned how the organization operates, and accrued many tips on how to be a better artist.” —Jane Houk

“It has been a real pleasure joining the Board and getting to know so many others who share the love of watercolor. As I am relatively new to watercolor, I have really appreciated the encouragement of some Board members as I try new subjects and styles. What a wonderful mix of artists to get to know!—Jim Kennedy

“I was eager to get involved with the local watercolor society when I moved to Oahu 4 years ago. I ended up meeting some of the members of Hawai`i Watercolor Society, and the excitement was so infectious. I have served on the Board as the Workshop Chair and continue to find that the relationships with HWS members keeps me passionate about growing as an artist.”— Rebecca Snow Cleghorn

“As a member of HWS for several years, I was curious about how the organization functioned, so I answered the call for new Board members last year. I’ve found it a most enlightening experience and unexpectedly, I’ve found my passion for watercolor painting has grown significantly in a relatively short time. I am enjoying my work on the newsletter as well. HWS is a great crucible for watercolor artists who want to fire up their work.” —Linda Umstead

There are a number of opportunities coming up for those of you who would like to be inspired and contribute to HWS as a newmember of the Board. Find out more. EVOLUTION AND CHANGE to be voted in as President, leaving the position of Vice President open; Jane Houk, Librarian (thanks to new member Davilla Harding for stepping in to take her place). Jerry Mayfield, Treasurer, needs an assistant who will be able to take over in 2015.

What role can you take to keep HWS alive and growing? The Board meets from 4:30–6 pm the first Wednesday of every month. Please email [email protected] to let us know how you can participate.

Last year HWS held one of the most beautiful Open Exhibits ever at Linekona. This year’s entries are beginning to trickle in. You received the prospectus in last month’s newsletter. If you’ve misplaced yours, you can download another at: http://hawaiiwater-colorsociety.squarespace.com/juried-exhibit-information/Send your image files to: [email protected] and your paperwork to HWS c/o the ARTS at Marks Garage by August 12, 2013.

Bring a friend, neighbor, family member or student to an HWS event. Every year we lose a few members to natural attrition. Fortunately, malihinis are always coming to the islands. Someone you know, or are about to meet, might want to learn to paint. We welcome newcomers to the arts. They keep us young with their fresh ideas and perspectives. Invite new friends to join HWS today.

—Paint ON!

Most of us have lived through plenty of change in our lives. HWS is brimming with stories to be told both through words and images. One morning in June, several Board members took to the phones to get to know our members better. We called and asked who we are as an organization, what we like about HWS, and what we would like to see changed.

We learned that while most members paint some, many wished they painted more, and some have given it up. Most are pleased to read the newsletter online, understanding the cost savings it affords us. A few would like a ride to the holiday party (Dec 1) or the next free demo (1–3 pm Oct. 6 at the ARTS at Marks). Some volunteered to help with exhibit work — Mahalo nui loa!

HWS can help keep us young and vibrant. We need your help to do so.

Special thanks to Linda Umstead for volunteering to edit/create our newsletter each month! Linda first joined HWS in 2006 and joined the Board in 2012 as a Member-at-Large. This is the second newsletter she has produced, and as you can see, we are in for a pleasant read. Linda is also doing a wonderful job creating posters for HWS events.

Several Board members are retiring from active duty this year: Susan Phillips our Membership Chair; Rochelle Weidner is slated
