Advanced Lights Out ManagerThe Sun Fire V250 server is shipp ed w ith Sun Advan ced Lights Out Man ager(ALOM) software installed. By default, console output is directed to SER MGT. Onstartup , ALOM boot information is displayed an d th e user is automa tically logged inas user admin.

ALOM enables you to monitor and control your server over either a serialconnection (using the SERIAL MGT port), or Ethernet connection (using th e N ETMGT port). For information on configuring an Ethernet connection, refer to the

ALOM Online Help wh ich is contained on the Sun Fire V250 S erver Documentation CD.

Note The ALOM serial por t, labeled SERIAL MGT, is for server m anagem ent on ly.If you need a general p urp ose serial port, use the serial port labeled 10101.

ALOM can be configured to send email notification of hard ware failures and otherevents related to th e server or to ALOM. For m ore details, refer to the ALOM Online

    Help.

The ALOM circuitry u ses standby p ower from th e server. This means that:

s ALOM is active as soon as the server is connected to a pow er source, and u ntilpower is removed by unplugging the power cable(s).

s ALOM firmw are and software continue to be effective when th e server operatingsystem goes offline.

See TABLE 1-2 for a list of the comp onents m onitored by ALOM and the informationit provides for each.

    Serial Ports

The server has two serial ports, which are labeled SERIAL MGT and 10101.

s SERIAL MGT port uses an RJ-45 connector. Use this port only for serverman agementit sup ports on ly ASCII connections to an external console.

s 10101 uses a DB-9 connector. Use this port for general purpose serial data transfer.

Default serial connection settings are show n in TABLE 2-3.

If you connect to the SERIAL MGT port with a DB-9 or DB-25 connector, instead ofan RJ-45 connector, the ad apter y ou u se will need to p erform th e crossovers given inTABLE 2-4 or TABLE 2-5.

Recomm end ed Op erating Environment

Your en vironmen tal control system mu st provide intake air for the server thatcomplies with the limits specified in Environm ental Requirements on page 16.

To avoid overheating, do not direct warmed air towards the servers intake panels.

Note When you receive your system , leave it in its shipping crate in theenvironmen t in wh ich you will install it for 24 hou rs. This is to prevent th ermalshock and condensation.

The server has been tested to the environm ental operating limits shown in TABLE 2-7in order to m eet its functional requirements. However, operating compu terequipment in extremes of temperature or humidity increases the failure rate of

hard ware comp onents. To minimize the chance of comp onent failure, use the serverwithin the optimal temperature and hum idity ranges w hich are ou tlined below.

    Optimal Am bient Temp erature

An ambient temperature range of 70F to 73F (21C to 23C) is optimal for systemreliability. At 71F (22C), safe relative humidity levels are easily maintained, and abuffer exists in the event of an en vironmen tal supp ort system failure.

Optimal Am bient Relative Humid ity

An am bient relative hu midity level in the ra nge of 45% to 50% is the most suitablefor data processing operations, to:

s Prevent corrosions Provide an op erating time buffer in the even t of environmental control system

failures Help a void failures caused by the intermittent interference from static discharges

that occur wh en relative humid ity is too low.

Note When relative humidity is below 35%, electrostatic discharge (ESD) is easilygenerated and less easily dissipated. This effect becomes critical when levels d ropbelow 30%.
